Title: Who are our 'Game-makers'?
Post by: one-eyed on January 02, 2012, 04:40:35 PM
The AFL site lists Dusty as a "game-maker"...

Dustin Martin - round 5: Richmond 17.10 (112) d. North Melbourne (103) at Etihad Stadium
From the moment Martin the man-child was selected by Richmond at No. 3 in the 2009 NAB AFL National Draft, the question wasn't if he would become an elite midfielder, it was when. The answer came in round five, when he announced himself as a genuine gamebreaker in the Tigers' thrilling win against North Melbourne. Martin, still 19, collected 33 touches - the vast majority contested - took eight marks and booted four goals against the Roos in just his 26th game. He lifted Richmond off the canvas after the Kangaroos jumped out of the blocks, and helped seal the win with two goals in the final term. Fellow midfield dynamo and Tiger teammate Trent Cotchin didn't hold back when rating Martin's performance:  "[It was] probably one of the best midfield games I've ever seen."

Who along with Martin do you think are our 'game-makers' or match-winners at Tigerland?

Shane Edwards Richmond  v Collingwood Round 4 2011.

After the umpires pantsed us raped us and then left us to die with a staggering 11 frees to 2 in the first quarter of which at least 6 of those frees contributed to Collingwoods 8.6.54 and a 40 point lead at quarter time, Richmond continued to fight gamely to be 50 points down at half time after a Travis Cloke fluke with 7 seconds to go in the second.
What transpired in the third was both breathtaking surprising joyous and heartwarming.
Richmond played a brand of attacking footy down the corridor with Lids Cotch and Martin the architects and for the first time in a long time Collingwood looked rattled. For us long suffering RFC fans it was window into the future and a belief that with consistency time and maturity this side would be putting smiles on RFC fans faces regardless of how the maggots interpret the game.
The only normality we knew from this game was the 6 clangers that Shane came u with the out of bounds on the full running into the goal, the run with three bounces and 30 metre grubber kick to Harry O, the kicks straight to the opposition and the handball to the bloke in the RFC jumper who was already hot from his Skunk opponent.
We were never going to win as we all knew in our heart of hearts the Pies were going to steady in the fourth after the margin was reduced to 26 at three quarter time but for 30 minutes we were on top of the world barring the break in the link of the chain I mentioned previously and back to the reality that despite the wonder ability exhuberance and talent of our best players unless these so called C graders don't step up to B and A Graders in terms of there impact and skill they will be game makers for all the wrong reasons and why we will wallow in the bottom half of the table until they do or we get rid of them.
Happy new year all and See you at the G in 2012. :thumbsup

Martin is already a gamebreaker and will be one of the biggest in the AFL alongside buddy.

Jack, Cotch and Lids to a lesser degree, we dont lack in that department, just need duds like the above to step up and do a job

agreed TM, we need 6 or so players to be belting the door down to be game breakers...Edwards, Houli, New chums in Batch et al...need to be looking to improve their footy...that will enhance our nucleus of talent and we will go places

Good post. Apart from the obvious like Deledio.. Houli, Edwards, Nahas, Conca, Batchelor even Grimes & Rance are all players who run to support and break the lines.
We're building a nice core of this type of footballer who's been sadly missing from former Richmond sides of the past.

Things are definitely on the mend for us because In the past I could only name one or two genuine game makers. Now we have quite a few and its building nicely.
Aside from Marto we have JR8, Cotch, Lids, Batch, Vickers, Houli and Kingy for his sheer inspiration. Griff and Ellis could also be added to this list very soon.  :thumbsup

Saw the great Dustin today and he is looking in superb shape, by far the best I've ever seen him in.

Has shaved his head, too.

I'd rank Martin & Riewoldt ahead of Cotchin as "game makers" perhaps breakers is a better term.

In any event none of our players are able to influence games in this fashion on any sort of regular basis. These days it is more a team influence that can effect results.

Thinking back to the 60s, our only consistent game maker has been Royce Hart. Wherein he individually influenced the game results on a regular basis.

1. Cotchin
2. Jack
3. Martin
4. Deledio
5. King (When he plays well, we win)

But you dont win games with these guys playing out of therir skin.  You win when your last 6 play solid football and all players are doing their bit
