The AFL and Australia Post have joined forces to connect individuals and communities through their love of football.
The Australia Post Community Inclusion Partnership with the AFL will involve AFL community camps with teams visiting local schools and communities in each state and the first ever schools letter writing program with a special focus on football.
AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou said the AFL was proud to partner with Australia Post.
“The partnership will encourage AFL fans to support inclusion in their community through fun and educational activities,” said Mr Demetriou.
Australia Post Managing Director and CEO Ahmed Fahour said Australia Post was excited to be working with the AFL to bring young Australians together, irrespective of backgrounds and beliefs.
“We are a part of every community in Australia and are uniquely placed to work with the AFL in this way. We want to create united and inclusive communities across the country, where individuals and groups can thrive,” said Mr Fahour.
“Team sports, like Australian Football, have the great ability to bring people together and our partnership will show young Australians what great things can be achieved when we all work as one team.”
The Australia Post Community Inclusion Program comprises three main initiatives:
Australia Post AFL Community Camps

Pretty sure this bloke was CEO of the NAB when NAB first signed on as an AFL sponsor

IIRC we last visited Mildura and played a preseason game up there back in 2006? as a charity event in memory of those four teenagers who were all killed in that well-publicized at the time shocking car crash (in Red Cliffs from memory?).
The Mildura area was part of our old country zone so there's plenty of Tiger connections and following up that way. Knighter of course came from Merbein.
It's around about a 7 hour drive from Melbourne to Mildura one way :P. Hopefully someone here, a local radio station or RFCO can provide us with updates if we play a preseason game up there again.

They wont play a game.
Essendon is coming to our club and it is all clinics, school visits and training.

Yeah but as part of training you can a have drills that are based on match conditions, a "scratch match" sort of thing
Actually just thinking about it considering the camps on during the week they have their "bye" in Rd 1 of the NAB cup, then perhaps they will play an intra-club scratch match
-
On the plus side at least we're not heading to or Skidney or downtown Ultimo to get shot at. :thumbsup

Yep the old clayton's scratch match so you get around the AFL's rules. it might be a 3/4 match or a match with 10 min quarters or one where there's no scoreboard.

Gotta love those photos. The kids don't care what the older grouches like us think of the individual players, or whether they're new or a rookie. They're all Tigers to them and happy as Larry to get a Tiger signature ;D

Tigerland: Sea of yellow and black sweeps across Sunraysia
By Gabrielle McLeod and Mitch Rodd
Sunraysia Daily
21 Feb, 2012
A SEA of yellow and black swept across Sunraysia yesterday as the Tigers came to Mildura.
Although they had a slight delay to original plans the Richmond Football Club did not disappoint AFL fans in Mildura.
The boys from Tigerland visited local schools and hospitals yesterday for their first day of their AFL community camp.
Number eight for the Tigers, Jack Riewoldt spoke to students at Mildura Specialist School yesterday with vice captain, Trent Cotchin as they answered some of the hardest hitting questions that have been put to them.
“How long do you think I’ve been playing football for,” an excited football fan asked.
The Tigers stars answered question after question before moving on to visit patients and staff at the Mildura private and base hospitals.
Jack said it was great to be in the heartland of the Richmond Tigers.
“Being the old zone for us there is a lot of great players who have come from here,” he said.
“I haven’t been here before but obviously Matty Dea is from here as well as Dale Weightman who was a great player for us.

Club impressed: Mildura turns out
By Mitch Rodd
Sunraysia Daily
22 Feb, 2012
AS Mildura winds down from being Tigerland for the past two days, Richmond’s players and coaches have praised the city and the turnout.
With Sunraysia being part of the Tigers’ old recruiting zone, the AFL side jumped at the chance to return for their Australia Post AFL Community Camp this year.
Club coach Damien Hardwick said the city had a history of producing quality AFL/VFL players.
“It’s been a good crop of grass for us around here with Dale Weightman, Mark Lee, and Matthew Knights among others coming from Mildura,” he said during a civic welcome in the Langtree Mall yesterday afternoon.
“We like to give back us much as we can, and we’re still having fun as well.
“I’ve been out (to Mildura) a couple of times, not so much in an official capacity, it’s still hot,” he laughed.
Captain Chris Newman also said many great players had come out of Mildura, especially Richmond players.

Fans in awe of training run
By Mitch Rodd and Toby Prime
Sunraysia Daily
22 Feb, 2012
LOCAL footy fans could hardly believe their eyes as they watched an AFL club training session on one of their ovals.
Richmond ran a full-blown training session on the surface of Sarah Oval, home of the South Mildura Bulldogs.
A crowd of about 200 people, including an eager bunch of primary school students stood glued to the boundary line as the Tigers hit the training track.
The Tigers started with light running, followed by kicking drills, getting their skills on target.
That was followed by drills of dummy leads, oriented with decision making.
As part of their recovery from injury, midfielders Trent Cotchin and Nathan Foley did reflex drills off to the side of the group, as the main session’s intensity increased with full ground drills and circle work.

The local Mildura paper today praised Richmond for how the community camp went. Well done RFC :clapping.
More teams to visit
By Mitch Rodd
Sunraysia Daily
23 Feb, 2012
TREVOR Ryan believes this week’s Richmond visit could be the beginning of more time spent in the region by AFL clubs.
The Sunraysia football development officer declared the Tigers’ AFL Community Camp a success, and said it could become the catalyst for more AFL visits.
“Other clubs may look at the success we had here and perhaps try and tap into the area as far as fan-bases go,” he said.
“I’ll put some feedback reports into the VCFL and Richmond back into the AFL, then it is just a waiting game until next year.”
Aside from the team’s plane being delayed on Monday morning, Ryan said the whole event ran smoothly.
“The plane being delayed on Monday morning was the only real hiccup, it all ran pretty smoothly after that,” he said.
“It did limit the time spent at the schools, but the clinic started on time and the talent squads enjoyed their time with the coaching staff.
“The function Monday night was tremendously popular, around 350 people went.
“I just enjoyed relaxing on the Tuesday morning and watching the training session.
