TAC terminates Richmond sponsorship
Media release - 1 April 2005
The Transport Accident Commission has today terminated its major sponsorship of the Richmond Football Club, effective immediately.
TAC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Stephen Grant, said the TAC was left with no alternative but to end its 16 year relationship with Richmond, following the drink-driving and speeding incident involving Tigers player, Jay Schulz.
“I wish to stress that the TAC has not taken this decision to terminate the sponsorship lightly,” Mr Grant said.
“After 16 years as a major sponsor of Richmond, the decision we have taken was an extremely difficult one. But it was also a decision which, given the events of the last 36 hours, we had no alternative but to make.
“The last time a Richmond footballer was detected drink driving in late 2001, the TAC made it abundantly clear to the Club that it had received its first and final warning.
“We told the Richmond Football Club, and stated publicly, that the TAC would instantly terminate its sponsorship of the Club, should a repeat drink driving offence occur.
“We owe it to our staff, our road safety partners and to every Victorian who has been injured or lost a loved one to road trauma to honour that pledge.”
Mr Grant said the TAC bore no ill-will towards Jay Schulz or the Richmond Football Club, but had acted decisively to emphasise the importance of the ‘Drink, Drive. Bloody Idiot’ message.
“By all accounts Jay Schulz is a fine young man with a very promising football career ahead of him,” Mr Grant said.
“And we know that he recently injured his ankle in the Wizard Cup game against Collingwood.
“But he is also a young man who yesterday morning made a terrible mistake – a mistake which all too often leads to consequences far more devastating than a broken ankle.
“By getting behind the wheel after drinking – and then speeding some 40 kilometres an hour over the limit – Jay not only put his own life at risk, but also those of other road users.”
“In many ways, Jay was lucky the police intercepted him. Had they not done so the consequences could have so easily been far, far worse.”
Mr Grant said more than 100 lives had already been lost Victorian roads this year.
“Eight people died over the Easter holiday break alone,” he said.
“When lives are lost and broken, it is the TAC that picks up the pieces. And that is why we take these matters so seriously. That is why we have taken the decision we have.”

We were warned and told, we agreed and we got what we deserved

Jay's contract should also be terminated! :banghead

Yes we did get what we deserved. That former sponsor is now history. Wonder what we'll agree to next time, public execution of any player caught with a Nokia?
-
Dont know what to say. I just wonder how this will affect our books this year.......
Walloped in Rd 1....
Lost $750,000 mid-week.......
What a start to the season. Anyone care to hit the panic button after the Hawks beat us this Sunday?
-
So what happens with the Sponsorship on the back of the jumpers now. Do we have to get some volunteers to sew over the top of the “Drink Drive” ?
Or maybe each player could get a black pen and colour in the white bits?
Or, just to make a statement (nothing to do with the fact we can't afford new jumpers), cut the words out and leave a dirty great hole where our sponsor used to be.

Official RFC response to TAC sponsorship decision
2:19:42 PM Fri 1 April, 2005
The Richmond Football Club has today been informed by the Transport Accident Commission that it has immediately terminated its sponsorship agreement with the Club as a consequence of yesterday’s incident.
“We are extremely disappointed to receive this advice given our 16-year relationship with the Transport Accident Commission that has helped change community behavior with respect to road safety and drink-driving,” said Richmond’s president Clinton Casey.
“As we have already made very clear, we in no way condone yesterday’s incident, but it must be remembered that the Richmond Football Club has also undertaken a considerable amount of positive work in the community as ambassadors for the TAC. Over the period, we have spoken to tens of thousands of people on issues of road safety and drink-driving through education, training programs, country, hospital and school visits.
“The Club has enjoyed a rewarding relationship with the Transport Accident Commission and we thank them for their support.”
Pursuant to the terms of the agreement, the Club is not permitted to comment further on the termination of the sponsorship agreement with the Transport Accident Commission, however, the figures quoted in today’s media are extremely excessive.
The Board and Management of the Richmond Football Club will now work tirelessly in seeking out and securing a new major partner, to minimise the financial impact of the Transport Accident Commission’s decision. Discussions have already commenced with interested parties and the Club is confident it will be able to find appropriate sponsorship funding.
Sponsorships of AFL clubs are constantly evolving and this change now creates a significant opportunity for a potential new partner to join forces with the Richmond Football Club

Did I miss something back in 82 - Did we pee off some tribal elder on our end of season footy trip or something. When is this poo going to end. :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Well it didn't take the TAC long to forget us.
Just checked out the TAC web-site and under sponsorship section - we've been removed, deleted etc
Good to see someone has a sense of occasion or humour ;D ;D :rollin :rollin ;D ;D

Jay's contract should also be terminated! :banghead
no it shouldnt, he made a mistake and should be punished but he is a tiger brother and blood ith thicker than water or money!
the tac should be ashamed!!!!
they have had so much publicity about their message! they should show supprt bec 4 16 years the tigers have been brilliant in their end of th esponsorship bargain.
the tac were just looking 4 an excuse! screw them and lets hope liquorland, kim beam, c.u.b, vb, tooheys , bundy rum etc become a major sponsor 4 the next 20 years!

Your certainly fired up over this X ;) ;D
IMO they have nothing to be ashamed about - they are trying to sell a message to people. They paid a lot of $$$ for the Tigers to sell that message. The Club (and that means every employee of it) cannot preach road safety and how dangerous it is to get behind the wheel when you are over the limit and then have one it's employees go out do the complete opposite.
Now that's hyprocritical.
As for them looking for an excuse - I don't think so - quite the opposite ;)

What does the Club mean by "the figures quoted in today’s media are extremely excessive"? If we weren't getting at least $500K from a major sponsor then something was wrong in the first place. As we budgeted for around a $100K profit this year we're now at least $400K in red because a twit didn't call a cab :banghead :help.
I have no idea how we'll go with finding a new sponsor(s) given they won't have exclusive rights on the jumper with Motorola already on the front. Anyone got Romanov's number in Chelsea, London! :help

i am fired up wp, because sponsorship is all about exposure, the tiges have done more than enough selling th emessage, just because a handfull of players over 16 years stuff up its no excuse to walk away!
so what the tac are selling now is, if u know someone who has a drinking and driving problem, dont help them, dont educate them dont councell them, just walk away from them! the tac can go fornicate themselves and eddie mciluvbuckley.
poo , they owe the tigers for much more than what they gave!

Haha, as a Spurs fan I reject any thought of getting Red Rom aboard to help out. Besides, with a salary cap in place he won't be able to buy the title here like he can in the EPL.

Will do lol.
What's the exchange rate - $1 = 40p...hmmm that would about 300,000 pounds we would need. Loose change compared to the dough in the EPL.

From this morning's Age:
In a bid to cover the lost sponsorship, Richmond officials yesterday met with representatives of mobile phone company Motorola to get them to increase their financial support to the Tigers.
Richmond will have meetings with up to six more companies over the next few days.

Wonder who the six companies are? Motorola is one obviously.

AFL's two sets of rules
By Caroline Wilson
The Age
May 3, 2006
CHAD Morrison's decision to hop aboard his Vespa after a few too many 11 nights ago has demonstrated yet again one of football's truisms. That is, that there is one rule for Collingwood and another for the rank and file of the AFL.
This is not a criticism of the Magpies. Most independent observers would say that Collingwood has done business pretty well over the past seven years.
However, you cannot blame other clubs for wondering how it is that the biggest club continues to get all the breaks. Imagine how Richmond is feeling at present. The Transport Accident Commission has indicated it will defer any decision on Morrison's transgression until its next board meeting in about a fortnight.
Until then the Magpies have been given cause to show how they can keep their $1.2 million three-year community-based deal alive. Not the Tigers. When Jay Schulz drank and drove the major sponsorship was terminated virtually overnight.
The TAC might argue that Richmond violated its contract a number of times over 16 years, pointing not only to Royce Vardy but also Dale Weightman, Aaron Fiora and Justin Charles to name three. But the fact remains that this is the Magpies' second recorded mistake under its (albeit revised) contract and Richmond has every right to feel aggrieved.
Richmond must be asking itself for the millionth time where it went wrong. Back in 1965 it took the forward-thinking step of moving its home games to the MCG. Still it has no adequate stadium agreement from the MCG.
Through its own bad management under Clinton Casey it threw away a season-opening deal with the Magpies and entered the 2006 season $2.6 million behind Collingwood before the ball was even bounced. The Magpies also had the foresight and the crowd guarantees to underpin the AFL-MCC truce with the guarantee of 18 games a season at the 'G.
Because every Victorian club wants to play Collingwood twice the Magpies travel interstate less than everyone else as well.
Because Collingwood savagely protects its reputation and its brand it will rightly not give much ground on its jumper. The AFL has abandoned pushing the Magpies on this one. Their once proud rival Carlton will abandon the navy blue for white to appease the competition and its ridiculous claim that jumpers must be changed because they clash.
Port Adelaide feels so aggrieved by the manner in which its traditional jumper has been treated it has boycotted the heritage round's different guernsey.
And some older Victorian track and field heads still believe that Olympic Park will be maintained for athletes when Melbourne's newest sporting venue is built on the site of Collingwood's training ground. They are dreaming. It sits next door to the Lexus Centre.
The Magpies have punished Morrison by fining him $20,000 in contravention of the revised AFL code of conduct. Today AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou is scheduled to meet Brendon Gale of the AFL Players' Association, Morrison and his manager Ron Joseph and Collingwood boss Greg Swann.
Gale is angry that his union's code of conduct has been so blatantly ignored by a club but has not yet received the backing of the AFL. Demetriou told The Age he needed to investigate the hefty fine, believing it might have been justified in Morrison's contract. Not so. Morrison has a standard playing contract and wants the issue to go away.
Demetriou must decide whether to back the players' association or Collingwood. If he refuses to take on Collingwood, the code of conduct could be dumped.
However the commission decides how to divide up its broadcast rights spoils, "equalisation" will still be the word. But Collingwood, perhaps deservedly so, is more equal than others.

Thanks for the history lesson Caro but you conveniently forgot to mention that the TAC dumping us ended up being a bonus for the Club. Around a $250k windfall thanks to AFG coming aboard :thumbsup. The TAC and their double standards, can shove it >:(.
You also forgot ::) to say Caro that we made less money gate sharing with the Pies than not doing it. We were so desperate for cash when the proverbial hit the fan in 2004, we dumped the gate-sharing arrangement.
As for being $2.6 million behind. Yep because as Steven Wright put it our stadia deals are woeful. The MCC takes us for granted. All the new tenants were able to play the MCC and the Dome off each other to get the best deal.
Noticed also Caro put names to all our transgressions albeit ancient history but didn't name Cloke speeding at 144kph. I thought this article was about Collingwood ::).
Just another opportunity to stick the boot into Richmond even though this issue has nothing to do with us :sleep.
Port Adelaide feels so aggrieved by the manner in which its traditional jumper has been treated it has boycotted the heritage round's different guernsey.
Yep I know through my Dad they are totally peeed off with the AFL. As far as Port are concerned, Demetriou is Eddie's puppet. Good on them for telling the AFL to go shove it. They should be allowed to wear their prison bar guernsey. If Eddie and Collingwood don't like it then stiff!
-
port adelaide should do 1 of 2 things
a/ wear their prison bar jumper without permission and pay the fine
b/ just wear their normal strip, as they dont have any other traditional strip other than the prison bars
btw, caro is right is some aspects, butthis was an opportunity to go down and hard on the pies , really give to them, even looks like she is a lil scared
btw, did justin charles get done for drink driving??? i was never aware of this or just forgot. i thought he just took steroids, nothing to do with the tac

The Cats' financial arrangements with the TAC will continue, despite Ottens' charge.
"This is not a formal sponsorship arrangement and our association with the Geelong Football Club is simply advertising at Skilled Stadium and a networking package," TAC spokeswoman De-Arnee Schmidt said. "We will continue those arrangements with the club and they aren't in jeopardy."
