Hopefully the team doesnt write the Giants off as easily as you blokes.

They'll be competitive and far more comfortable playing there than we will be, and will want to roll out a good effort for their ACT supporters.

Has a Cairns debacle written all over it if we're not careful.

Should be the perfect hit out.

Full hitout against the Cats this weekend before a second string side play a meaningless game against a second string team in GWS. Totally irrelevant whether we win or lose.
After this Sat, jobs done as far as praccy matches are concerned

Hopefully not another GC scenario.

Their juniors are more talented than ours, knowing Sheedy he will play his best side and highly likely we will play our kids.

So what?

If I had to choose, I'd take a game defeat at the cattery over a loss to the GWS

DO what we did versus Freo. Play some seniors in the first half to freshen them up and sub them off in the second. Our ability should be enough to get us over the line.

Last thing we would want is any silly injuries on the eve of the season to important players.

Deledio should get a quarter or a half if fit same applies to Cotch Martin Axel Jack Vickery Maric Rance. Whether first or second its up to the coaches. I'd say second when the pace and intensity of the first has subsided to ensure no silly injuries or annoying knocks.

Self preservation is the key. Use GWS as a sparring partner for our Round 1 match.

Surely Lids will need at least a half if you want him to play round 1. He will be a long way off match fit.

Looks like we're are playing a full strength line up  :clapping

Lids will be there  :clapping

And seems we get some decent coin if we win  ;D

From Greg Denham - The Australian:

"The Tigers will wind up their NAB Cup campaign against Greater Western Sydney in Canberra on Saturday when they plan to field a near full-strength line-up, which will include Deledio for the first time during the series. The only certain exclusion is suspended half-back Reece Conca, who is eligible to start the premiership season.

Dual best-and-fairest winner Deledio has been sidelined since damaging his hamstring last month.

Richmond, which has beaten Hawthorn and the Cats in its four NAB Cup matches, appears certain to earn prizemoney by finishing inside the top-eight of the pre-season competition."

A big test for the boys.

If we are any good we should bury GWS and win by 100+ points.

I'm tempted to drive up for the weekend.

tough to win big at Manuka, never seen anyone lose by ten goals let alone 100 points

a 7-8 goal win is a good win on that ground at AFL level

Giants also play and train at Manuka often, they'll be comfortable and up for it

but i agree with your sentiments '65  :gotigers

I understand the Money side of it but is it smart to play full strength side ? For me the risk of injury is too great and the focus should be full strength come R1 against Carlton.

I have to trust the brains trust as they know how much work each player needs. I wont be impressed if a couple of keys go down.

Agree 100 percent. Ward, Coniglio and Palmer are playing very good footy at the moment. Devon Smith picked up over 100 DT points in one game. Tomlinson, Tyson and Hoskin-Elliot are picking up the pace of senior footy and as Gerks said, they'll be out to impress the ACT club members.
If we go and experiment with a young side we can afford to be beaten but do we really want to be GWS's second scalp in as many weeks?

NAB 3 and NAB 4 are major hit outs for us and I believe they should be that way If we get injuries then that's just tough luck. No one ever did anything walking around in fear all of their lives. Secretly I think we can beat Carlton and Collingwood in the first 5 weeks but keep it to yourself. ;)

Agree with both of you, fir off I wanted all our stars rested through fear of injury, except Deledio who needs the run.

But now I agree with Smokey, think we need to get the full squad together for the final hit out.

As long as we get through unscathed injury and report wise (touchwood) then that's the main thing. It'll also be a good test mentally as far as attitude and professionalism and whether a year on it the boys have learnt their lesson from last year. It was this type of game first up against a newbie team where we are expected to win and win well that we dropped last year (Gold Coast loss).

The only risk (barring injury) I see in playing GWS this week (especially if we win easily) is complacency going into round 1 on the back of two big wins. Hopefully Dimma and the boys continually remind themselves that Carlton has owned us since the Centenary game in 2008 and until we beat them then any talk of a Richmond resurgence is  just that - talk.

I've been thinking about this aspect myself and now believe there is something we can take out of this game. We need to learn to win, and win well, in the games we are expected to.

I thought last year that the game against port up here was a real test, mentally, and we failed miserablly. It also started the mid season rot.

This weekend should give some inkling as to how far we improved in this area.

Gerks, as I have been sifting for DT Gems, I've been looking at GWS quite closely and I noticed that they've had a lot of lineup changes in each of their NAB games. So you would expect them to field a close to full strength in preparation for round 1. Sheeds would love a win over his old club too. IMO I think we need to go with a full strength lineup for this clash.

Preview: Giants v Tigers
By James Dampney
Wed 14 Mar, 2012

WHERE AND WHEN: Manuka Oval, Canberra, Saturday, 17 March, 12.30pm AEDT
LAST TIME: First meeting
TV & RADIO: www.afl.com.au/broadcast guide/tabid/9451/default.aspx

THE FOUR POINTS

Greater Western Sydney

1. Can the Giants take another step forward after upsetting Gold Coast last week for their first NAB Cup win? Not too many tipped GWS to beat the Suns and that seemed to include the Giants, who clearly still hadn't learned their new club song after the 13-point triumph. That result has to give them confidence as they take on the Tigers for the first time.

2. How many places are left in Kevin Sheedy's team for the round one clash with the Sydney Swans on March 24? AFL-experienced guns such as Callan Ward, Chad Cornes and Phil Davis are certainties to face the Swans, while the likes of Jeremy Cameron, Steve Clifton, Toby Greene and Anthony Miles have had good pre-seasons. But there is sure to be the odd spot still to be determined and a good showing against Richmond will help.

Richmond

3. While the Giants will be boosted by an upset win over Gold Coast, a 59-point thumping of the Cats in Geelong would have given Richmond an enormous injection of confidence. Can they show some consistency leading into the season and swat aside GWS in Canberra, or will some frailties again rear their heads?

4. Can Ivan Maric continue his strong pre-season and build on his growing cult status? While his impressive mullet has been drawing attention, it is the new recruit's stoppage work that will most be winning over the Richmond coaching staff. Facing Jonathan Giles in the ruck, and possibly Israel Folau, Maric's development should continue full steam ahead of round one.

many predators will catch but not kill a young prey animal, then use it to teach their young to kill.

this should be equivalent for our tiger cubs.

That is how we have been treated in the last 5 years, Now the tables have turned Mr Powers?
I pray we are not prey this year

Has RFCO organised the link for todays game?

It doesn't look like there will be any audio or video streem coming our way.
The best that is available is the live updates and chat from the Richmond website.
Here's the link.

1st quarter summary...we've dominated the game but been wasteful, all missed to the same side as well. Didn't feel like a breeze was out there but maybe there is...

Deledio hasnt missed a beat, looks in prime condition. Miller and Riewoldt are lively up forward and GWS luckily for us have been a bit wasteful going forward

Nah theres not a massive breeze ...not sure what's going on but theyre all missing to the same side

Brad Miller is a forward who needs to kick goals! he is horrible and during the season he will miss crucial goals that will cost us ... Hardwick saying he is our "marquee forward" tells me we are going backwards.

Miller simply can not kick and if he could we would be a better team. personally Miller is holding up that position for Griffiths, Astbury, Elton ... don't care if two of them are being developed as key backs, that's crap! they are forwards! throw them in the deep end and give them a go!

You are kidding yourself if you think we are a finals team if Brad Miller is in the team having four shots at goal for 1.3! Good forwards kick 3.1 or 4.0!

Don't care if it's pre-season, this is a sign of things to come!

We need Vickery to kick a bag and Miller a bag! Need out B/C grade players playing good football!

From RFCO:

A little bit sloppy in the centre square, we could have broken out a few more times but just missed a handball here and there or been caught

Browney, Arnot, King and Batch currently warming up on the ground

Lids best on ground for us. He just glides out there, especially against the opposition today. Good speed to out on the wing, he looks in top nick

Miller/Riewoldt have been the targets up forward. Vickery not used yet.

Dusty has been a little quiet, hes got himself out of packs like usual but theyre tagging him and playing very close attention.

Jack leaping at everything but missed a few shots, very un-Jack like

We're playing seriously, its a little slippery under foot foot but GWS looked a lot more in control in that 2nd term

Title: Re: Richmond v GWS in Canberra Game day thread

Browny is out there, Brandon Ellis is now sub, Batchelor also on

So that means....I.Maric is subbed off and someone else...will find out

Lids has had 7 Cp's out of 18, 5 inside 50's and 2.1 . Also has 9 handball receives so working hard to get it

We start the 2nd half with a midfield of Browne (Maric subbed off), Foley, Dusty and Cotch. Lids and Grigg on the wings

Morris poor kick at CHF. Rebound ended up with Giles at 55 and Batch pushes him in the bakc to give away 50m and a goal to GWS. Very ordinary Tiges.

safe to assume deledio is playing a midfield role rather than half back?

Good to see him winning plenty of the ball and most importantly kicking goals. We'll need to see more of it in the season proper.

tigers dominated that qtr Defence is outstanding much better with batch coming on

RFCO:
Id say the forward line intensity is probably down compared to last week, but theyre still looking for the body

4,222 are here at Manuka Oval today btw

Foley has centre clearances, Deledio has a game high 13 contested posessions

Not sloppy that quarter, we were a lot sharper

Only issue with Morris is the kicking, does everything else well. Will throw himself at the ball, has great pace, and can chase down anyone

tiga said it's nothing but a training run now

In the bounce, GWS run away with it, Grimes gets lost under the ball and Posty clears, Newy steps around one, to Morris, he goes back to Newy bursting out, to Browny, Houli running past, great link play today, to Tucky, goes deep to Dusty, cant mark, Vickery roves, hands to Nahas and does another smart dinky little kick to Riewoldt on the lead. He was 40 right and had every chance to go for goal. Riewoldt on the boundary, runs inside, snaps the goal....theres his 5th  :gotigers

Ellis, off to Grigg, snaps around the corner and Nahas takes the mark 40 out, he plays on and Vickery takes a mark on the goal line boundary, quickly goes in board to Riewoldt...man runs over the mark, 50 to Jack, goal from the goal line....AND HE KICKS IT TO THE SCISSOR LIFT! IT GUYS MARK IT! Well done Marty

Ordinary 2nd qtr and poor kicking for goal in the first 2.5 qtrs stopped it being a 100+ win. That 2nd qtr fade out is something for Dimma to remind the boys about to prevent any compacency.

Excluding the 2nd qtr - in the other 3 qtrs we had 12, 12 and 10 shots respective scoring shots and all up we had 150 more disposals and the inside 50 count was 73 - 35. Still a smashing in anyone's language.

Just back from the game and basically its mission accomplished. Many rotations with all the midfielders having a good run. Lids is pure silk, a class above the rest today, like a Ferrari in 2nd gear, looks the goods and should be ripe come the Carlscum game. One player who also impressed me today was Grigg. A few good clearances and appears to have an extra yard of pace this year. If he can further contribute to a midfield already boasting Dusty, Cotch and Foley then it has to be a positive sign, BTW Foley appears to also be returning to his form of some years ago, very clean with the ball.

All in all we couldnt have prepared too much better, its now just a case of whether the boys can take the confidence they have gained into the cauldron of the MCG and 80,000+ onlookers. The skill level has noticeably lifted since last season but whether cracks appear under the pressure for premiership points is what will determine our season.

The other thing to note is we used 23 players to GWS's 25. So the Giants using two extra players on the bench made no difference.

Yes they are. You can have possession (win the ball) but not dispose of the ball. I think that's how it works.

Drove down to Manuka from the Harbour City today.  Good win by the team, they did what they had to do.  It was good to see Tiger players being strong enough to push their opponents off the ball.  Saw some really good work around the stoppages from the mids. I still don't think that Dusty runs hard enough the other way when the opposition gets a break going.

They went back to the ruck-wrestling rules today and I thought that hurt Mega-Maric's performance.  He seemed to like the three metre separation rule more.

Morris hurt his ankle and it affected his running stride late in the game.  The Mailman looked like he had a bad case of cramp in the final few minutes, but he played a lot of gametime.  Rance got pretty badly winded, but it didn't seem any worse than that.

I was sitting just behind the interchange gate. When our players rotated off the ground, they looked completely spent.  They did a lot of two-way running.  But, after a two or three minute rest, they were looking fine again.  They say that the test of fitness is the speed of recovery.  Our players look pretty fit.

Matt Hornsby was calling the rotations all day and even sending the runner out to drag players who went over time.  As bench coach, Brendon Lade didn't seem to have a lot to do, except encourage the guys prior to their return to the field.

Truly though, we didn't have a lot to beat, I wouldn't get carried away with this one.

Just got back from the game. Not sure about the early reports of it being slippery, the ground was is top shape. Both teams came out at a million miles an hour so the intensity was quite high in the first qtr which brought about the skill errors. We immediately looked the stronger team. Took a while before GWS got the ball past half way.

Lids was on fire. Morris does need to improve on his disposal skills but he was everywhere and competed really well. Houli Rance and Grimes worked together brilliantly.
Cotch and foley were great all day. We had problems scoring to the southern end for some reason. The wind was a little flukeu but not enought to cause the innacuracy.
Browne was better than Maric today but Brown was rucking for a while against Folau who is not a ruckman IMO.

2nd qtr was crap. lots of turnovers from both sides a few ridiculous 50m free kicks given to GWS resuting in easy goals for them.

Batch came on and immediately had an impact. He added much more drive out of the backline.
Dusty was strong and had some ripper don't argues.

Talk throughout the entire game was very good. most impressed with our in close linking. very sharp.

On the negative side, a couple of times we decided to do a switch of play out of the backline and there was nobody to deliver to on the wing.

Best word to describe GWS's game is plucky. Tried hard all day but turned the ball over to easily and too often. Basic skill errors were killing them.

Last qtr Jack was having fun by trying to aim his shots at goal at the RFC scissor lift. had a direct hit with his last shot at goal and everyone cheered.
I think I got some video of it.

Happy to take questions if anyone has any

First of all thanks for the tweets tiga. Great stuff that complemented (who was on or off/ reports on injuries/ best players) with RFCO's live chat :thumbsup.

You mentioned plenty of turnovers in the 2nd qtr. Where about on the ground were we turning it over and what was the main reason why we were stuffing up - GWS lifting their workrate and/or us trying new sets up and players in different positions and/or did it seem were we just plain complacent and switched off mentally after a dominant first quarter?

Where abouts did Newy play today? Last week I think he played back in his old role with Morris out.

ps. As you drove back towards (western) Sydney did you have your Tiger scarf sticking out of the car window?  ;D

No probs MT. Went a bit tweet crazy there and missed a bit of play whilst battling the friggin auto correct!  :banghead Believe it or not most of our turnovers in the 2nd qtr were in the forward 50 and most of GWS were in their defensive 50 and flanks so all were in the same area. It was a little bit comical at times adding our missed shots on goal to the mix We were over using the footy sometimes trying to be unselfish, sometimes trying to be too cute.  GWS was getting a lot of numbers around the ball and congesting things a bit and making ugly footy but we opened the game up in the second half. the game was played on our terms for the entire day.

Newy played two roles, his traditional one and then he played a bit of a roving commission into the middle and on the wing. He essentially fillled in where needed and directed traffic. Showed real courage backing into the pack, copped a hard knock and forced a turnover which eventually resulted in a goal.

It was too warm for a scarf lol but I had the club song blaring on the car stereo with the windows open lol

Lids was excellent today and despite the (deserved) hype around cotch and Martin is still our best player. Putting him up on the wing and through the middle will allow him to show it.  Foley also very good and Newman controlled the back line, so it was the old hands in charge today. But Grigg and Nahas were also very good. A Maric will also be a good pickup so he and Nahas would be ahead of pushup at this stage I would think. Morris also adds some run and creativity to our back half and Batch also continued to show good signs.

First quarter was played almost entirely in our half and should have been 9.3 instead of 3.9 in what were pretty good conditions - ground was a bit soft in places and it was warm but no real breeze to talk of. JR missed 4 very kick able set shots in the first half before booting 6 straight in the second. Was an 8 goal game if he'd brought his kicking boots from the start.

Second quarter after shooting out of the blocks with a couple of goals GWS then got ontop in the ruck and started winning a few centre breaks. We also weren't giving them any respect which didn't help and tried to get a bit ahead of ourselves. Game became quite scrappy at times in that quarter.

Second half we again took over and the young giants seemed to be fading towards the end.  GWS have some prodigious talent and can move the ball very quickly at times, but anything less than a 10 goal win would have been considered a loss with the team we had in. But 40 shots at goal is a good day out in any game and really we should have been up around the 25 goal mark with the shots we had. Miller missed a few as usual but JR, Lids and Vickery all somewhat uncharacteristically missed some sodas in the first Q.

Only real downsides today were i thought our ruck combo of Maric/Browne had their colors lowered to the lessexperienced GWS combo of Giles/Folau and Rance, while his ground play was good still needs to work on his ariel play. GWS didn't have a big forward line and while Rance, Post and Grimes we're OK, it's obvious why they are trying to turn big Griff into a defender. Still missing a good really big bloke up back, particularly for when we come up against the teams with tall forward lines.

Forgot to mention, from a footy purist point of view the battle between Martin and ward was probably the highlight of the day. And needless to say with those two it literally was a battle.

I'll take a punt on answering the questions about Posty and Morris.

Depending on his fitness, Conca gets a game ahead of Morris.  Our best small backs are Houli, Newy and Batch after yesterdays showing  Lids played wing, going forward.  Conca gets the other wing, IMHO, but it was a constant rotation. Jacko and Titch also spent some time on the wings, although Titch played mostly high-half forward.

Posty was OK. He ran hard, spoiled well and for the most part, got in the right place at the right time. In the second quarter and early in the third, when our mids went to sleep a bit, the ball came in too fast for him to do much about it.  Our best tall backs are Rance, Posty and Grimes, based on yesterday's performance.  The three of them are too small for the monster forwards, so we either need Griff to come through in the mid-term, or we need our mids to shut down the delivery to the bigger forwards.

Despite what Anderson said here ....

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson confirmed yesterday the rule change also applies for the eight practice games in the final weekend of the pre-season series, and the NAB Cup final.

"NAB Cup suspensions can be served in the NAB Cup, including the final round which determines placings and prizemoney," Anderson told The Australian.

The AFL pays prizemoney down to eighth. The winner of the NAB Cup final receives $198,000, while the runner-up collects $132,000. Third- and fourth-placed clubs receive $88,000, with fifth to eighth collecting $44,000.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/tiger-becomes-first-to-benefit-from-new-suspension-law/story-e6frg7mf-1226275200518

According to RFCO, the AFL won't include this last round of NAB Cup games in the final NAB Cup ladder.

"Ladder finished after Round 3 of NAB, because in theory the loser of the Grand Final last night could have ended up 3rd, 4th or lower."

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23598249&postcount=26

So the RFC will end up with $44k in prizemoney for finishing 7th rather than $88k (4th place)

Agree with muscles re postie. He we serviceable without being brilliant and was caught for pace at times.

I'll go with the Deputy Chief, but we had been told otherwise a few weeks ago.

I'm a little concerned about Big Maric. Why was he beaten on Saturday? Was he jumped over? Was his intensity off?

Stripes, He looked a little flat right off the bat. But Credit to Giles, he had a very good day in the ruck and up forward for GWS. If you are after a cheap ruck option for DT, get on him.
So I won't crucify big Ivan on one game.

The other thing that changed relating to Mega Maric was the ruck rule at stoppages.  They reverted to the ruck wrestle rule, as distinct from the 3 metre separation rule for the other NAB cup games.  I thought that MM was disadvantaged a little by the return of the wrestling.  The 3 metre rule allowed him to bash-crash into the contest, whereas the wrestle rule needs a different method of contesting.

Deledio got a mention in Robbo's tackle.

Quote
5. Brett Deledio

Thirty-three touches, four goals, running brilliantly in the midfield. That makes Richmond's on-ball group super talented: Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Foley plus Grigg, Tuck and Jackson.

I was at the game on Saturday and Grigg surprised me, looks much sharper with skills and quicker to boot, might go under the radar this year, believe he is especially primed for a big one against his old mates come round 1.
