Umm, here goes;(Robbo questioned Newy, Gerard questioned Bob)

Asked about the game on Saturday and whether it was one those games where you feel you have arrived as a club. Newy said it was Nab cup where they had a few out but they took plenty out of it and you can only beat what they put on the park.

Robbo asked about his captaincy and the events soon after such as floggings, Cuz's arrival at the club and Wallace sacking. Newy replied it was difficult and he had doubts about his ability to captain but feels he has improved each year. Robbo basically told Newy he is keeping the chair warm for Cotch! :sleep

Questioned about Dimma and whether he should be signed now or later and would you suggest signing him again if asked by the president for his opinion. Newy said he does't care when he gets re-signed but he certain he is the right man for the job and the players feel the same.Newy says he has no doubt the club will make the right decision and has no doubt the club is heading in the right direction.

Asked about the indigenous centre and Troy Taylor and Relton 'Robinson' leaving. Did you feel you did enough? Newy stated he did ask himself if he did enough and would again no matter who left the club.
I think that is all of it, Bob Murphy believes that Cotch, Martin and the likes would be talking among themselves about where they could take the club!

I actually thought Newman was quite telling when asked about the succession.

He stressed that Cotchin is just a kid and isn't wearing the 17 yet and said he wants to hang onto it as long as he can.

I was quite surprised at how forceful he was (in his low key kind of way) but he left me no doubt he wants to be Captain at least 2 or 3 more years.

Was thinking the same thing. Yes, it was quite understated, but he still managed to mention twice that Cotch is young and still has a way to go.

Yep, Chimp is still young and a better player and leader than Newman  :gotigers

Long live Chimp. Give this beast the captaincy next year.

Thanks GR12 and TBR for the Newy summary  :cheers.

I don't blame Newy for wanting to hold onto the captaincy. He's done all the hard yards after spending a decade at Tigerland in a bottom side never playing finals (he was in his first year in 2001 so he didn't play in September) and now it looks like he's going to see some reward in the next couple years as captain before he retires.

I kind of understand the angst of wanting to hang onto number 17 too..
Newie is comfortably in the 22 atm but there's some pressure coming through particularly in the HB position.
It's good news for the Tigers but maybe not such great news for Chris in a year or so.

Yep while Newy maintains the form of the past couple of years and the side continues to improve and mature under his leadership then there's no rush to change the captaincy. The test for Newy as you refer to Magic is he turns 30 this year so you would reckon just due to age and the body slowing down post-30 y.o. he'll hand over the reigns to Cotch in a year or two at the most. Hopefully Newy gets to lead the Tiges back to finals before that happens as he deserves that reward.
