Any idea which RFC listed players will be playing?
-
I'm assuming we'll know on Wednesday or Thursday.
Wonder if Conca will play.
-
Conca might play a half or three quarters to sweep away the cobwebs for Round 1.

he needs to. Will be lacking touch.
-
VFL teams are announced Thursday night.
-
Anyone know whether VFL games are put on I View afterwards?
Conca has to play if he is to play AFL round 1. I wonder if they would also be tempted to play Lids for another run before the Blues?
-
Selected Coburg side for Saturday:
B: Batchelor McGuane Arnot
HB: Webberley Derickx Dea
C: Connors Thomas Helbig
HF: White Griffiths Wheeler
F: Graham Elton Clifton
R: Browne Contin Carnell
I/C: Murphy, McErlain, N. Maric, Rayson, Wright, Turner, O'Hanlon, Tanner, Jordan

Jake Batchelor misses out. That is unbelievable!!!

Jake Batchelor misses out. That is unbelievable!!!
Might be given another run prior to the Blues game otherwise maybe Morris and Ellis may be selected. :shh
I see Conca's name is not listed for Coburg. Would have thought he needed the run for Coburg more than Batch does prior to next weeks game against the filth. :-\
-
Jake Batchelor misses out. That is unbelievable!!!
most likely, but not definitely. he may play just part of the game.
if he does miss he must be wishing he got rubbed out for the knob cup games too
-
BF had the wrong bench. I've edited the above Coburg seniors side.
Here's the Coburg development (ressies) team:
B: Grgic Darrou Wright
HB: O'Hanlon Fahey Brandt
C: Turner Rayson Saville
HF: Murphy Sortino McErlain
F: Verrier Jordan Cartelli
R: Hore Masters Venditti
Int: Groves, Zajac, Uysal, Younan, Cole, Grosso, Iudica, Egger, Bamblett

x 2 :gobdrop
Will be interesting to see if he plays the entire game
-
I'm under the impression we took a guilty plea to have Conca available for selection in round 1. Maybe Batch's average Nob Cup form has made room for Conca? I don't imagine he would of been sitting around with his finger up his bum.
-
Not isolating anyone in particular but I think even many Tiger fans underrate Conca. Certain starter against the Blues IMO.
-
personally i have big wraps on the kid, but the question is, has he earned a spot rnd 1?

Play McGuane in the 3rds and give Wright a crack at FB.

Have to say it is great to see Gibson Turner named
Most likely to play in the "Development" game (what a joke that is "development" it is the VFL reserves but I digrese ::)) but great to see him out on the ground. Has had a very interupted pre-season with a groin injury
-

Yes. I thought he was excellent in the opening game/s.
is half a game of good footy for the whole pre season earning a game?
In terms of what the have done ( as opposed to potential) Batchelor is on par with conca career wise, yet it seems that Batchelor may miss out due to an average preseason, yet conca may play with no real pre season.
considering we are supposedly switching from getting games into kids to earning a spot, Im not too sure conca has earnt his spot.
In saying that I dont think conca will disgrace himself, but batch would be entitled to feel a bit aggrieved

ken oath. Morris hasn't done anything apart from his game on the weekend.

He was putrid against Fremantle. Very similar to Tim Flemming but Flemming was a better kick

My Prediction ;D one of the biggest mistakes since Kent Kingsley :santa

RFC can afford take his development slowly. I'm just hoping that he has gotten over the groin injury. Twelve months at coburg wont hurt him.

I agree with all eyes will be on him, but Im on the Griffiths bandwagon. Think this kid will be one of the keys to our team going foward. It will be interesting to watch his progress either way.

Good to see Matt Dea named as well.
Nearly a Dead heat between him and Griffiths as biggest mistake as Matt Dea cant play
-
Why is Griff a mistake, J? Shoulders no good? would have thought if he could stay injury free that he'd be handy. can kick the idiot about 65 metres
-
now, i can perhaps understand that something may have happened that caused a deep set hatred against dan conners, but you were long gone when he Dea was drafted :huh
Is he just an avenue for your hatred of RFC for giving you the ahhs ?
-

Shoulders and injury prone.
Need players on the park.
Some players can take a bit of "crash and bang" ala Brad Miller, If Griffiths played the same role up forward they would have to collect the pieces
-
Would definitely prefer Batch to Morris.
Why play Morris in round 1? Let him get his game together and rack up a few possies in the VFL. The only thing he has proven thus far is that he is hard and has poo skills.

He should never have been drafted
-
Well lets see how they perform before we sack them before their fist game, I still think, well would like to think, that Griff will make it and Gus will make it, Jury is out on the rest though.
Would also like to see McGuane make it too, needs to re invente himself, perhaps in a different role.
Lets wait....

Yep, try something with him at least...

If Griffiths can get over the shoulder problems he could be something very decent. Having said that the times he has played he hasnt had much of the ball.

Hey monk u said the same about jack riewoldt two years ago. Said he was crap and a joke of an overrated player
-
Oh dear
-
When will people realise that it takes big men several years in the system to reach their potential :banghead And I might add that it is a wise coaching move to play Ben at both ends of the ground in his development years.
-
Just on Batchelor. A bloke at work plays for Sandringham and said they've got 27 Saints named this weekend (which he's a bit dirty on since he got the 2011 most consistent reserves player at the Zebras and was promised some firsts game time) and some are still playing next week. I made a point that we're playing Thursday and they're playing Sunday, but he reckons it still happens if a player is borderline and the club just want to get a little bit more run in their legs.
I'm still not hopeful, but thought I'd chuck that in.

Heaps of mistakes early. Missing targets and overpossessing by hand.
Griffiths in defence drops a mark and then is caught for a throw. From the free the Blues get the first goal.

Turner should have looked for gus leading to the square
We look poor in defence and that chain handball that failed resulting in a goal now
-
Sloppy play in defence (McGuane's handball ::) ) trying to clear the ball from defence twice results in a turnover and mark to the Blues inside forward 50 for a goal.
Dumb play again. Blues down to 16 men after a collision and they still get a easy goal.

That McLean is a heap of poot
We've got a few of our own playing for Coburg. Pathetic quarter of footy.
Potter in the huddle saying there's not enough spread out of defence and no structure. Dominating possession and stats but turning it over too easily. Too many handball options stuffed up. Transition poor. 5 marks in our forward 50 so that's working.

They just interviewed the Blues player who was 'shirt-fronted' causing "dizziness". He virtually came straight back on? Cmon Griff, fight through it!
-
Terrible standard. Is the wind flukey???
Most of the mistakes have been by hand so we can't blame the breeze. Short little one foot handballs that do nothing :scream.
Really hard to find good players. Browne has been okay. Gus is now fourth in line of our ruckmen.
Turner - needs to attack the footy even if it means you get crunched. He's let it bounce and waited for it a few times.
More of the same from McGuane (not our worst), Webberley, White. Hard to see them being on our list in 12 months time.
Wright needs to gain a yard but seems to have good marking hands.
Arnot working hard but not getting a lot of clean possession to be really effective.
The others have been quiet. Batch needs to do more if he wants to get back into the seniors.

Good work by browne in the contest. Webbs along the wing gives to White back to Webbs who runs inside 50 and finds Turner in the pocket. Goes across the face for no score.

Gibson Turner has shown more in the past 60 minutes than Matt Dea has shown in the past year .Gibson can play
Yep he can play. Got the feeling in the first quarter he was just having a look around, got into the game more and showed some very good glimpses. The only thing he did today that disappointed me was towards the end of the first quarter but otherwise I was pleased with what he showed us today. He needs to be developed properly and we will have a good player.

Impressive youngsters (in descending order): Elton, Arnott/Turner, Wright.....and.... Webberley BOG.
BTW the orange peanuts crucified us!!!!
-
Wright, Arnot, O'Hanlon have shown "promising" signs
Batchelor, White, Dea, Graham, Browne, McGuane i worry ...
Webberly gets a lot of it though isn't damaging ...
Elton hasn't had opportunities ...
Turner nothing special really ...
Derrickx can play
Griffiths went off with a sore head ...
Nick Maric is Addam Maric's younger brother ... similar size and smart with the football ...
Wright needs so much work its not funny - to be honest I cant see him making it atm unless he improves his speed and by a lot.
Arnot is just a hard nut and you cant knock that
O'Hanlon did well in his first game for Coburg and has the potential to go on.
Elton was very good and showed excellent signs IMHO
Turner missed some tackles but has tricks - he knows how to play. We just need to develop him correctly.
Thats my take on todays game for our rookie type players.

from those that watched, is that a fair assessment?
Yes. There was a disappointing play towards the end of the first quarter where he should have tackled and didnt and I will say within seconds he made a terrific second effort and made a strong tackle. He is just a kid in the big smoke so he will learn. He was much better as the game went on and even made some tackles, showed some tricks. Overall I think he was good today. Lots of potential in Gibson and seems to want to do the right thing in a game. One play across half forward later in the game where he kicked around the corner and landed the ball on the chest of one of our players was just outstanding.

Hope Griffiths is ok cause a knee to the back of the head is serious & should be monitored very close for months.
My mate copped a huge hit like that & has never fully recovered from the hit 15 years on, it still effects him.

Wright's biggest problem is his fitness. Is drastically less fit than most. Will improve dramatically if he keeps his cardio workload up.
-
Really like the look of Arnot, thought he was fantastic. His effort to gain first possession is first rate, and he is quite good at finding a link up guy. Lacks that burst of speed to get him clear of contests, but his toughness around the contest quells that to a certain extent. Like his tackling ability as well. Thought he wasn't to far behind Brock McLean as the best inside mid for the game, and it was his first game. Really looking forward to the development of this kid.
In regards to Todd Elton, I would really want to see what he is like on the lead. Great contested mark, and great below his knees. Reminds me of a quicker Vickery. Interesting to see his development as well. Dont think he will play this season unless our forward or back stocks take a significant hit, but everything his done screams at me that there is every chance he can make his way into the best 22 in 18 months.
Griffiths. Attacked the footy for a backman before getting KOd. Dont think hes a backman however. For what its worth, Ive been hit there AND expected it. It knocks you around something savage. Dont think its weak at all, especially in this day and age where concussion is such a huge thing. No problems with what happened coming off and ensuring health (it IS the doctors call anyway). And those who call them weak are either remarkably old school, or down right unrealistic.
Wright. Did some good things, did some poor things. Very good below his knees, and has fairly clean hands. Big booming kick and took some strong marks. Gave to much space for his opponent on more than one occassion, but thought he was better than average. Especially considering its his first game as an 18 year old who was picked extremely late in the draft.
OHanlon. Popped up and did some nice things. Good kick too. The game probably didnt suit him being so scrappy. A really hard game to tell anything from.
Turner. Shows footy nauce. Not as quick as I was expecting, but chased hard and did some nice things. Gets generally into a good position and uses it well. A while off, but on that performance, not lost in the woods.
Derickx. Would have loved to see him in the ruck and moving around the ground more. Showed promising signs. Not a lead up forward, but again, some nice things. Dont know the ruck thoughts in regards to a depth chart but I wouldnt be surprised if it went:
Maric
Vickery
Dericks
Graham
Browne
Elton
Everyone else didnt really show all that much different to what I expect. Helbig and Batch turned it over in situations they usually dont. Not worried about either of those two though, thought Batch was extremely accountable and added some quality when he got it for the most part. Wouldnt worry me either if they both played in the guts and got more closer with those positions and then step back into the AFL.

only watched a fraction of it but boy, turner looked to have a trick or two, if he's made of the right stuff , indeed he has the talent to play senior footy, time will tell :shh
-
On Turner, the blokes on the radio gave him some wraps, but mentioned that at times his attack on the ball left a bit to be desired.
from those that watched, is that a fair assessment?
There were a number of times especially in the first half Turner would sit back and wait for the ball to bounce rather than attacking it hard, being first to the footy and absorbing the contact. Being his first game I'll give him some slack in case it was nerves and him not being use to playing against bigger bodies. I also noticed in the first half Blue opponents were easily getting around him but by the last quarter Turner seemed to adjust and watch the opponent's hips more to at least pressure some of the defenders into going sideways. He's a rookie for a reason so he obviously has plenty of things to work on if he is to make it. I guess the one positive is he knew how to get to where the footy was and you noticed him enough out there to warrant another game in the Coburg seniors.
-

I didnt hear batchelors name mentioned much, ( but then again the bozos doing the call often just said tigers rather than call names :wallywink)
anyone notice how much game time he got?
i heard him called in the last, so i'm assuming that he didnt play well early, then get rested for thursday.

I'm not sure what Batch's T.O.G. was al but I didn't notice him for a period during the middle of the match. When I did notice Batch, he seemed to be playing deeper in defence aligned to one of the Blues forwards. He didn't get as much of it as usual from what I saw but apart from one mistake he was probably one of the cleanest disposers of the ball for Coburg today in poor standard (skill-wise) game.
-
yeah, it was that middle period that i didnt hear him called.
I couldnt imagine someone being rested through the middle of the game and coming back in the latter stages if the plan was to play him thursday, so i reckon we can safely discount that.
-
Went to the game and was over the moon with Eltons performance. This kid has sticky fingers and has courage to boot.To me this kid will play seniors sooner rather than later.
Of the others wright has a good size ,but does appear to lack fitness, and a degree of footy smarts.Hopefully good coaching will help.
As for Dea really liked his game ,provided good run from the back, and you can really tell that he has got some serious muscle definition now.white and webbs were busy ,however disposal let them down at times.Arnott looks the goods and has a killer tackle but just seems to lack maybe half a yard in pace.
Also really like big brownes game seemed to get better as the game went on,and by the end took some telling marks.
One aspect of the game that seems to be out of control is the number of rotations that take place...Just hate when i see players motioning to the bench that they need a rest..When i was playing you used to run the opposite way when you saw a runner heading your way..Who the hell wants to come off?

I reckon you've both covered it off well.
I thought he showed that has alot of natural talent and ability but it's going to take sometime to pick up the tempo of games. But considering he hasn't really palyed at all during the pre-season I reckon there were soem really positive signs
Just on Piva Wright - he like a lot of kids seems to suffer from I call "react-itis" that is they are very very reactive in situations. Stands back and spectates and those few seconds can be the difference between getting to and making a contest or being half a metre off your opponent who as a result ends up with a really easy/soft possession.
Jayden Post is good example of this and after 3 years he finally seems to be showing signs for getting over it
On Batchelor, I thought he let himself badly with his disposal and decision making at times. I thought he was alot better when he was sent down back.
Arnot needs to keep his agression focused onthe contest and ball, stupid brain fades resulting in 50 metre penalties isn't the way to use your aggression. Also thought his disposal by hand in particluar was average
Thought the disposal by both foot & hand by a lot of the RFC players was very poor indeed. You can generate as much run and carry through the lines as you want but it is pointless when you kick the ball directly to the opposition when under no pressure and gift a tunr over. McGuane, Dea, Batchelor, Arnot were ate varying stages the main offenders
TBBH didn't think any of the RFC guys played strongly enough to warrant promotion to the AFL
-

I agree. Most players did some good, some bad or just were not in the game for 4 quarters. I wasnt really happy becasue I thought we had team depth but it really didnt look that way. Its game 1 so I will give it time.

Agree with WP on RFC players nmot earning any spot
Also... Not running to the defence of Mcguane, but after watching todays game, so often was he dealt with the hot potato when he didn't want/need it and resulted in a turn over.
As much as I like Gus... He was poo and below the knees?? Might as well play tunnel ball.
Dissapointed with batch and whitey and mcguane should enjoy long stints at the burgers...
-
McGuane has not improved since 2009.
Others have developed and gone ahead of him.
He might not want the hot potato but at times he hangs on to it far too long and gets into trouble also.

Not sure about this eea. Graham was very solid. Gave us first use most of the time, worked hard to get back and take marks. 15 touches, shitloads of hitouts and good second efforts. I thought he was okay bending down and picking the footy up to give the quick hands. He was in the best players as well so I reckon people getting stuck into (not having a crack at you man) is just getting ridiculous. Browne was solid as well. They're going to be very handy for Coburg this year. Maybe they're just good VFL players.
Both played an Ivan Maric style game. ;D

yep. had Gus open at one stage all by himself but chose to just hold onto it until the pressure came and by then Graham had a man on him. other than a few bad decisions McGuane was great yesterday. If he plays against Carlton I will poo myself but credit where it's due..he was fantastic down back

There was a reason he played at Coburg yesterday, not with round 1 in mind.
Lets see how Post goes on the big stage after a solid and promising pre season and take it from there. :thumbsup

Ben Darrou was sensational in the 3rds
The rockin' Moroccan
Very keen to see this bloke come on
Big, strong, running defender with good foot skills
To me our best rookie prospect, was disappointed not to see him in NAB
Is he coming back from injury?

Sensational marking, 1 ripper in 1st qtr, excellent disposal, good positioning , great spoiling & killing a contest, only coburg ressies but was def a class above & look forward to seeing him play in seniors next week

He's as unfit as Wright, and seems to give up more easily than Wright, from what I saw at training. Maybe this is why Dimma is rewarding Wright with a NAB Cup berth, as well as Coburg seniors vs Darrou in the reserves.
I didn't see Darrou in the bests in the game reports? What gives?
-
I thought Browne played okay. Graham was average. Dropped too many marks. Elton showed something as did Turner. It was bad luck about Griffiths. Wright was okay. Webberley was okay but not sensational. Same can be said for White. White needs to win more of the contested stuff. McGuane makes too many mistakes. He is a real liability with his ball use. Derrickx was good.

Once a week, usually on the Friday before the game

thanks billy.
Not exactly conductive to bringing out the best in our players in these games, particularly the early ones.
Raises the old bugbear of fielding our own team again.

Match Report: Tigers kick off season on a high
By Heather Mellican
Coburg website
March 25, 2012
The Coburg Tigers kicked off the 2012 VFL season with a 13-point win in a grudge match against cross town rivals, Northern Blues today.
The Tigers were able to produce good pressure, particularly in the second half, with Jeromey Webberley, Pat Contin, Luke McGuane, Ben Clifton and Willie Wheeler finishing the game with big numbers. Rhett Jordon also showed determination across the forward line, picking up two goals.
Both teams started off sloppy, producing multiple turnovers and careless mistakes. Despite good control by Coburg’s centre forward line, they were unable to convert their skill into points on the scoreboard.
The first goal of the match didn’t come until the five-minute mark by the Northern Blues, and things began to look grim for Coburg when Ben Griffiths went down on the ground with a concussion early in the first quarter and didn’t return for the rest of the game.
The Tigers finally found aggression with three quick goals, before the Blues began to make space and convert quick play into goals to create a five-point lead at quarter time.
Coburg coach, Adam Potter enforced the importance of composure and smart play at quarter time, telling his Tigers to slow down and not rush their decisions.
The Tigers had a disappointing start to the second quarter and the frustration began to rattle captain, Nick Carnell, who began to fire up his team.
The Tigers then began to find their rhythm with good defensive pressure from Christian McErlain and two goals from big men, Andrew Browne and Tom Derickx.
A quick centre clearance from aggressive Richmond recruit, Matthew Arnot, who ended the match with seven tackles, turned into a great goal on the run by Jordan, giving the Tigers their first lead of the match.
The Tigers began to take control, with young gun, Wheeler placing four tackles in the quarter, Webberley running all over the ground to pick up 19 disposals and McGuane showing significant improvement as they went into the second half with a one point lead.
Both teams started off slow in the second half until the Blues took back the lead with a goal by Adam Marcon at the seven minute mark.
However, strong defensive pressure by Nick Maric, winning a four on one contest, and a quick goal by aggressive captain, Carnell who produced great pressure the entire game, got fans and the team energised.
The excitement lead to another three goals with a long kick from Gibson Turner turning into a goal for Richmond quick, Matthew White, as well as two long goals from Coburg young favourites, Contin and Wheeler, giving the Tigers a solid 21 point lead going into the final term.
Potts re-enforced the need for pressure and execution of their game plan and urged players to lift at the start of the quarter in his three quarter time address.
Despite an early goal by Jordon, accompanied by another big celebration and roar from the crowd, two goals and fast plays by Northern Blues kept Coburg on their toes, with Potter looking nervous in the coaches box.
Two big misses from set shots by the Blues drove the tigers, with vice captain, Clifton going in hard, and Todd Elton showing off his good hands, picking up three marks in the last quarter.
The game sealer came with a delivery from Jordon to Derickx in the goal square, taking Coburg to a 19 point lead, however Potter still looked nervous in the box with his hands on his head when the Blues came back with a quick goal.
When the siren sounded Potter banged on the coaches box window in celebration before running down to congratulate his team on a solid performance with smiles all round as the Coburg theme song boomed at Mantello Holden Oval.
The Tigers went without a win until Round 9 last season and are already looking forward to a better season with greater consistency, pressure and composure in their play and are hoping for the same result when they take on Casey Scorpions at home next Saturday.

And another thing, the commentators were terrible. Hyphen was as per usual, great to hear but the other two taking pot shots at Piva Wright, Mclean's pace, and anyone above 200cms was so irritating.
The younger weasel commentator also had a go at Arnot and suggested he work less on his biceps and more on his kicking. Would pay good money to watch him say it to his face.
:thumbsup

I laughed at a lot of what they said but it was pretty poor, especially from the young bloke. I don't see him out there having a kick

Yeah that commentary was funny, it was " perhaps he shouldve spent less timm working on his biceps this summer and more on his kicking"

Development coach Greg Mellor on how the RFC players went for Coburg last Saturday ...
Jeromey Webberley
A very pleasing performance across four quarters resulted in 28 disposals, most of which were effective. His clearance work was quite strong and his voice and leadership continue to be important for the young players in the team.
Luke McGuane
Produced a strong display in the key defensive post. It was a return to the sort of form Luke and the coaching staff had been working towards. The 10 marks he took were a testament to his ability to ready the play and get in position quickly to impact on the contest.
Matt White
Provided good run from contests. Had a big last quarter, gathering nine possessions, just when we needed someone to stand up. Also was defensively sound, with five tackles. Continues to show excellent leadership to the younger players.
Matt Arnot
Had an excellent first quarter, but did not have the same offensive influence for the remainder of the game. His defensive efforts, however, remained intense, and he finished with a game-high seven tackles.
Brett O’Hanlon
Made good position to receive the ball from teammates, was effective with his disposal, and some of his tackling was first rate. An area for him to improve on is making sure he impacts each and every contest when the ball is in his area, both offensively and defensively.
Gibson Turner
Did some impressive things in his first game at senior VFL level. He just needs to back himself in and use his speed to advantage to really hurt the opposition. His chasing and defensive pressure were quite good.
Piva Wright
Took some good defensive marks and used his strength in contested areas when under pressure. He generally made good decisions with the ball and will be better for the experience.
Todd Elton
Another young player, who will benefit from the experience. Presented well up forward and took some impressive marks, particularly later in the game.
Jake Batchelor
Found enough of the footy early and made some really good decisions with his inside-50 kicks. Defensively, he had several effective spoils and was able to impact the contest with some good tackling efforts.
Andrew Browne
Worked his way into the game well and took some strong contested marks. As we get more game time into him he will continue to have more impact on the contest.
Ben Griffiths
Was injured early in the first quarter and took no further part in the game.
Brad Helbig
His attack on the contest was a real feature of his game. He won some very good contested footy, and also provided the team with run out of the back half. Produced some quality defensive efforts to beat his man.
Angus Graham
Worked hard right throughout the match and consistently gave the team first use at the stoppages. Missed opportunities to take some important marks, but he also took a few very good grabs marks late in the game.
Matt Dea
Was very good defensively and won some important contests. Offensively, he improved his output from the previous week, which is an area he needs to keep working on. Applied several strong tackles, which set a great standard for the side.
Tom Derrickx
A positive step forward. He impacted several contests, kicked two goals, and had a real presence out on the ground. Three tackles in the team’s forward-50 area underlined his good work ethic. Needs to make the most of his opportunities and finish off his work.
