Title: South Melbourne FC 2012 VPL Thread
Post by: 10 FLAGS on March 25, 2012, 09:53:51 PM
In Round 1 today - South Smashed Moreland Zebras 4-0 infront of about 3000 people at the cheap as chips almost rent free Lakeside Stadium (well at least its cheap as chips for South). Anyway it was a half decent display from South today, but the Zebras were poor indeed. If we had played properly we would have scored 10 goals. Looking forward to an excellent season from Australia's most successful soccer club in Australian history and of course FIFA recognised Oceania Team of the Century.

The South Will Rise Again   :thumbsup

You know Dooks back in the past there was one or two seasons where the NSL was called the A League and I think indeed we did win a championship during those 2 years. Indeed we have 4 Australian Championships, 1 Oceania Club Championship, 2 Australia Cups about 8 Victorian Titles and about a million other trophies. Just ask FIFA they recognise us as Australia's greatest club! ;D

Are Moreland Zebras the remnants of the old Brunswick Juventus in the NSL?

I think so they were wearing the traditional black and white stripes. Poor old Brunswick Juventus have had numerous name changes, I think last time they were Whittlesea now its Moreland. Anyway at least they are still going around.

Well done to South.
Should have a great season I hope they do.

As for A League NSL etc, you cannot ignore the NSL Dooks if players who played in the NSL are still running around in the A League and they count their first team appearances in NSL and A League.

So in reference to your question how many A Leagues have South won, more pertinently would anyone devalue the old English Division 1 when it was the top tier of football and are those championships won worthless or is it because in 1992 the English FA revamped the structure of English Football and inaugurated the Premier League and it is only after this inauguration that English Football should only be remembered.

South Melbourne are Australia's most successful football club.
It matters not on the running of the NSL or the A League now for that matter what is more applicable is that the NSL, championships appearances goals etc has counted and will always as a statistical status be counted as a senior football competition in Australia regardless of whether it is defunct now or not.

If Gold Coast never play again after tonight do we not count the appearances or the goals for those players or furthermore anything that any player contributed to the North Queensland Fury.

For many Football in Australia started in 2005/06 with the beginning of the A League and soccer was only a term left to describe the competition when it ran under the moniker of the NSL prior to that.

Moreland Zebras I believe is an amalgamation of Whittlesea Zebras, Bulleen and Essendon Triestina who now play out of a boutique soccer complex in Coburg hence the name Moreland Zebras.

South continued its flying start to the season with a resounding 3-1 victory against Okli in R2. The chokes did well in the first half but South dominated the chokes throughout the 2nd half and belted the imposters. As usual it was Okli big on words and very low on silverware. Anyway South is 2 from 2 and thats the way it should be!  ;D

Another disgraceful performance from South last night. Coach under real pressure IMHO and some of the recruiting that took place looks to be average. A new goalkeeper is a must IMHO.

Well Melbourne Victory has just given their Goal Keeper the stuff (Covic (sp?)) is he an option?

Covic is good enough to continue in the A-League

South defeated Hume last night 1-0. Terrible performance from South IMHO. Not playing well at all and lucky to get the 3 points. Tsolakis needs to improve this team or he'll be in trouble down the track, South playing lazy football at the moment and lucky to be picking up points.

just refer to them as Hellas ..thats what we all know them as..A club with a tradition of over 60 years should be known by the name its always been known as,irrespective if that name is taboo these days

Guthrie is like Cudicini when he was behind Cech at Chelsea. There's just nothing he can do to get in the side.

South lost to the Knights tonight. I reckon that Tsolakis will be sacked this week if the speculation and rumours are correct.

Another draw, better performance but no win. We conceded a goal towards the end, its not going well this season after a good start.
