Gary March says Richmond primed for giant step
Jon Ralph
From: Herald Sun
March 28, 2012
RICHMOND president Gary March says there are no more excuses for the Tigers - starting with their Round 1 blockbuster against arch rival Carlton.
March said he had total confidence in the plans of re-signed coach Damien Hardwick and would not shy away from setting finals as an expectation after a 10-year absence from September action for the club.
After two years under Hardwick, the Tigers had enough star power and depth to topple top-eight sides, including the Blues.
"We have gone from being not sure we could compete to being pretty sure we can," he said.
"Does that mean we are going to win (against Carlton)? We would hope so. We would be bitterly disappointed if we didn't put up a good showing, but also for the rest of the season. We expect to be ultra-competitive this year.
"If you go through it on a statistical basis on the number of games played, we are coming into that window that says we should be able to compete with the top-eight sides consistently.
"Nothing is guaranteed but if we have a fair run with injuries we believe our list is good enough to be ... playing regular finals footy over the next three years."
March, in his seventh year as president, said Hardwick had laid a platform over the pre-season for sustained performances this season.
"We go into this first week probably in the best shape we have ever been. Our fans should go Thursday expecting us to put on a bold show and we will be disappointed if we don't win," he said.
"I think there is a feeling within the group that they need to step up. At the end of the day you can't say we are too young any more.
"We will be one of the youngest lists still but it's not an excuse because in games played, they are starting to catch up."
March's bullish attitude stems from Richmond's encouraging pre-season, lack of injuries and two seasons of force-feeding games into high draft picks.
The Tigers believe they could break their membership record of 47,000 by tomorrow.

Who left the stove on

I don't disagree but he's an idiot for saying it now the day before the game. Locked and loaded still gives me a shudder.
Why not wait until Friday morning?

Spot on, if we lose the media will have a field day . . . only 1 way to stop that from happening . . . pound the scum into the ground! :gotigers

All top teams have to live with expectation. I think I read where Judd (could be wrong) said that he welcomed expectation because the only teams without expectation and media speculation are the bottom teams. If we want to succeed then our club has to get used to being expected to perform. :thumbsup

I would not have been impressed, but Gale is too intelligent to be quoted saying things like this the day before Round 1 ;)

Talk is cheap when it isn't backed up. The Club should know by now to just shut up leading into round 1. In fact shut up until we are good enough to beat a top side and then we can talk about us wanting and promising to be this and that. It just backfires back on the Club otherwise.

Yep the train that arrived 20 minutes late. :help
Made Metro Trains look good.
March should not talk full stop. I think B Gale needs to do the talking and March should just shut up.

I was at a pre-macth function last night and Benny Gale said exactly the same things as March because that's where the club sees itself as being right now. So it's OK for Benny to sell the Club's Mantra but not March even though are singing from the same hymm book?
I ask the same question - if this HUN article was with Gale and not March would people be as annoyed/critical?
-
I'll say this William, Gale has savvy in that his answers leave less or no room for follow up questions that will present an opportunity to show what foot in mouth disease is.
In answer to your specific question Gale spoke internally about our vision and prospects whereas March went public 2 days from the game with the same comments.
Nothing wrong with that because as a club if we want the blockbusters and the Friday night slot we need to handle the pressure and the scrutiny that comes with it but until we do we need to have one person mosr probably Benny to convey the selected version of what goes out publically and the others at the club can toe that line.
March needs to just not reveal too much.
After all we fail to make finals this year and Gale's (Clubs) vision of 3-0-75 is mothballs.
Despite everything I believe Gale I believe is the best off field appointment this club has seen since Neville Crowe and I feel that when March speaks he puts extra pressure on the club due to him not having the smarts to nip things in the bud straight away and providing too much ammo for those outside the club to shoot us down.
Even if we won the flag I can see March on the MCG five minutes after the siren saying we can three or four peet to blokes in the media. :help
-
bottom line is that whatever March said, and it was only ONE comment, had no bearing what so ever on the result last night.
-
Of course not AL but he does not sound as professional as what Benny does and words coming from Benny's mouth hold more creedence than March's IMHO.
-
March has no creditability in the public arena, and thus should be kept away from it. Gale has credibility and should be the voice of the club.

When was the last time we heard from Carltons President?
That's because he is an ex player and puts team before ego.
