Title: Damning statistics
Post by: tony_montana on April 12, 2012, 08:51:31 PM
Just heard Pickers on fox league teams-

Richmond is last in the league in clearances, contested ball, 3rd last in tackles and last in something else

Yuck

Can someone bring up these stats? Hard to believe when it took Giants 3 quarters to even get a goal on the weekend.

Dermies hair part on this show looks like a bum.

I wonder how many other middle road clubs would have similar stats though after facing only top 4 teams to begin their year?

LOL I know turn it up, we played two stuffing games and both were pretty tough games.  Not crying into my beer yet.  If we get flogged by Melbourne, then I will cut up nasty.

True only 2 games, but all I'll say is this,

Talent has nothing to do with tackling and winning the hardball

I take your point but talent has plenty to do with winning the Hardball. Reckon Judd is the player he is just because he has a huge ticker?

Judd does a lot more than just win the hardball....

ticker and the mindset plays a massive role in separating the elite from the good. You reckon selwood has more talent than Lids? Swan?    No way, but their ticker and mindset carry them to greater heights.

One name Jude Bolton, you reckon he would have played close to 300 games without his desire? He wouldn't have made it to 100 without it. Plodder, but is massive at the contest.

IMO There is no excuse for an up and coming hungry side to be last in those stats, shows me they listened to too much fluff about their preseason form

Mate, you were the one making the sweeping statements, not me.
You said 'talent has nothing to do' with winning the hardball,' which is irrefutably wrong. I agree that courage and determination are important but talent also plays a massive role. Guns like Judd and Selwood are not just tough.

after 2 rounds stats dont tell a real lot, particularly those stats coming against more mature bodied and experienced midfield.

they'd be even worse without big ivans input.

speaking of which, i saw somewhere we were ranked 2nd (in a good way) for hit outs to advantage against, but again 2 rounds doesnt give a great insight.

Do you mean 17th in hitouts to advantage against? 2nd would not be good

This is getting ridiculous, talk about defending the undefendable - Ok replace nothing to do with it, with little to do with it.  ffs...

Lids, Martin, cotchin foley vs any other quartet in the league, are we the least talented midfield in the league?  ::) stuff me, there is no excuse for us being last in these kpi's

True, but if you were a coach you'd be wanting to nip this in the bud pretty quick before it became a trend

:lol. Easy there fella. in no way was i 'defending' our midfield performance. Your twisting my words a little there.  i was just pointing out that quality mids like the ones you mentioned have more than just dogged determination. I agree with the main thrust of your argument. Our mids need to lift. But we've been up against two of the best engine rooms in the comp. Lets see how we go this weekend.

probably more damning than overall numbers is the large differential in contested possessions and clearances between us and the opposition in our first 2 games.

In dimmas first year we matched most sides in these 2 stats, even when getting beaten easily. where we got smashed was in the uncontested disposals.

last year we greatly improved our uncontested but dropped right off in contested, and it seems that trend  is continuing
