AFL Tigers coach backs Riewoldt to lift

Richmond AFL coach Damien Hardwick is concerned about the defensive aspects of Jack Riewoldt's game but has full confidence the 2010 Coleman Medallist will regain top form.
Riewoldt has booted 78 and 62 goals in the past two seasons but his first four games this year have yielded only six majors.
Hardwick pointed out on Thursday that no player had scored more than 13 goals this season, which indicated key forwards weren't dominating games as they once did.
But he added Richmond's three key forwards - Riewoldt, Ty Vickery and Brad Miller - were not playing to their potential.
"Our guys will come through it," Hardwick said.
"Our scoring capacity is there. We've just got to get our key forwards more into the game.
"They've got to work harder. We've got to deliver the ball a little bit better also."
Riewoldt was held to one goal against defending premiers Geelong last week and the 23-year-old could do more off the ball, his coach says.
"His defensive area of his game is the area that we're probably a little bit concerned about," Hardwick said.
"The goals will come.
"He has just got to get his kicking boots on. I think he kicked ... two out on the full.
"But if he keeps working on the defensive aspects and the intensity of his work-rate, that's where he'll get the results on his scoreboard.
"He can play better. There's no doubt about that.
"He has just got to get the little things right and the big things will come which is the scoreboard.
"It's pretty hard to dull Jack's confidence on the field. He's fine," Hardwick added.
"He knows his form will turn around."
The Tigers have a 1-3 record this season, enduring a tough first five rounds including matches against grand finalists Collingwood and Geelong and premiership contenders Carlton and West Coast, plus a win over Melbourne.
Richmond host the Eagles on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.
"I woke up screaming throughout the night, for the first three nights," Hardwick said of his reaction to seeing the draw for the 2012 season.
"We've improved as a side.
"We've just got to make sure we try to get over the top of one of these sides and hopefully this is the week versus West Coast."

Is a short term fix, we need the spread of goal kickers . . . agree though I would go back to it :rollin

Doesnt have to be short term, why cant we just clear the ball out of the centre more often and kick more goals.
If we reallyu mean buisness Jack and Vickes should be kicking 6-8 between em a game. Maric , nahas and king should all be kicking no less than a goal a game.
Lids, martin, Cotch, Conca etc should all be kicking goals especially Martin as he gets rested there. poo Martin could kick it from the centre square hows that for a clearance.

Well when we had that set up Martin and Cotchin were kicking 3-5 goals a week and so was Nahas for that matter, as was King etc.... there was a spread of gaol kickers. Go back to that set up, now add Grigg and Dededio kicking goals and the spread gets better..

major issue is the moment is that we can never isolate any of our forwards, thus you have opposition peeling off and being the third man up while Vickery is standing 5 metres away with his hands on his hips.

Jack hasnt been at his best, but i dont think he's been as bad as some on here are suggesting. Im backing him to return to form shortly. I'm a bit more worried about Ty.

OUT-of-form Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt may be trying too hard, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said.
Riewoldt, 23, the 2010 Coleman Medal winner, has kicked only six goals this season and averages 13 possessions and 3.5 marks a game.
Hardwick conceded the forward's defensive work had to improve, but said he was confident the goals would flow eventually.
"He can play better, there's no doubt about that," the coach said.
"He's just got to get the little things right and the big things will come, which is the scoreboard.
"He's just got to relax. Sometimes you can try too hard, you can try and force things when they're not there. He'll become better as the season progresses.
"I think he's averaged about four shots a game. I think he kicked 1.1 on the weekend and two out on the full.
"The previous week he kicked 1.3 and two out on the full again. We've just got to get his kicking boots on."
Another Tiger forward, Tyrone Vickery, also has been under fire, but Hardwick was reluctant to go with a smaller attack at Etihad Stadium on Sunday against a West Coast side full of talls.
The Eagles match is the last of the Tigers' horror opening stretch.
Hardwick joked he "woke up screaming the first three nights" after learning Richmond would play four of the top five teams of 2011 in the first five rounds this season.
"The first five rounds of the season are probably the most uneven I've seen with regards to sides playing certain sides a number of times," Hardwick said.
"The ladder will begin to steady itself out over the next four-five rounds."
He said Richmond had moved on "very quickly" from last weekend's Trent Cotchin "bear-hugging" saga.
Hardwick said after the loss to Geelong he would speak to the AFL umpires department because Cotchin had been "bear-hugged to death" by opponents.
But it was revealed no such contact was made.
"I said my piece after the game," Hardwick said.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick is hoping his side's competitive form is rewarded in the form of a win over ladder leaders West Coast on Sunday.
The Tigers were far from outclassed in losses to Carlton, Collingwood and Geelong so far this season.
And despite their tough draw, Hardwick feels Richmond have already demonstrated their marked progress in 2012.
'There is no doubt we've improved,' he said.
'We certainly had chances in that last quarter (against Geelong on Sunday), but that's the reality of the game, you make mistakes and learn ... we've just got to make sure we eradicate them and get better again.'
The draw for the fixture did no favours to Richmond, who were pitted against four of last year's top five in the opening rounds.
But rather than bemoan their bad luck, Hardwick claimed it was an opportunity to measure his young side's development.
'It's always a good way to start your program in a way,' he said.
'We were hoping we'd pinch a few games early, we've fallen short in a number of areas but we've been really happy with our form but overall.
'We're playing a better style of footy than last year, we've just got to make sure we get over the top of one of these sides.'
'The first five rounds of the fixture is probably as uneven as I've ever seen it, with really good sides playing other sides in one block, but I think the ladder will begin to steady itself out over the next four or five rounds and we'll see more where teams are really placed.'
The next test will be at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with pacesetters West Coast proving they have taken further strides in the early stages of this season.
'There is no more formidable opposition at the moment to trial ourselves against than West Coast this weekend, they're undefeated, they play an outstanding brand of football and one we'll look to challenge ourselves against.'
Hardwick said he had not modified the Tigers' training program in response to claims the Eagles' midfield were lowering their bodies and ducking to milk frees for in-the-back and head-high contact.
'Not so much this week, overall I think we were one of the sides that had the most frees against last year so it was certainly an area of focus for us across the pre-season to refine our technique and I think our technique overall this year has been good,' he said.
'The one thing the umpires did well yesterday (Anzac day clash) was there was a number of instances where players were leading with their heads that the umpires didn't pay (the free).'
Hardwick also dismissed the notion the Eagles would be any easier to play in Melbourne than on their home ground at Patersons Stadium.
'I don't know about easier, but the dimensions of the ground (Patersons) are actually more favourable in some way, it's an easier ground over there to defend somewhat because it's skinnier and longer,' he said.
'But overall they are such a formidable outfit, the quality of their midfield, their talls, they've got four quality key forwards, their defence led by Darren Glass is a formidable outfit, so I don't think it will make too much of a difference.'
Hardwick backed key forwards Tyrone Vickery and Jack Riewoldt in particular to return to form in the coming rounds after managing just nine goals between them so far.
The coach said their lack of goals was indicative of a general problem which key forwards across the competition were facing.
'They're (Riewoldt and Vickery) not playing to their potential at the moment, but the funny thing about the key forwards in general, I think the leading goal kicker is on 13 goals this year which is just over three goals a game, so overall the keys haven't been kicking big bags of goals,' he said.
'(West Coast's Josh) Kennedy kicked a bag of seven but is on 11 for the season.
'It certainly helps if they are (playing well) but I think overall our scoring capacity is there, they've got a work a little bit harder, but also we have to deliver the ball a little bit better.'
