St Kilda cap squeeze could force out a star
Michael Warner
From: Herald Sun
May 09, 2012
A LOOMING salary cap crisis is forcing St Kilda to choose between its stable of stars and the club's next generation.
Brendon Goddard, Lenny Hayes, Stephen Milne and Leigh Montagna head a long list of well-paid players coming out of contract.
Even an increase in the salary cap of nearly $600,000 next year will not be enough to solve the dilemma of the Saints, who are believed to have 15 players coming out of contract.
Looking after established stars would come at the expense of emerging talents such as Ben McEvoy, Jack Steven, Rhys Stanley, Arryn Siposs and Jamie Cripps.
The bid to balance the books has been complicated by unusual clauses in the expiring contracts of veterans Jason Gram and Justin Koschitzke, guaranteeing them another year if their bodies stay healthy this season.
Gram earns about $400,000 a season and Koschitzke more than $500,000.
A temptation for coach Scott Watters could be to trade a star such as Goddard or Montagna to bank top draft picks for the future.

Geez, Kossi is on 500k+? Craig Cameron is handling their contracts too?
-
Milne and Hayes are in their thirties although Hayes clearly has the best attitude of the both of them.
BJ Goddard could complement another side very nicely indeed. Hasn't looked happy this season and from where I sit he looks to be playing angry atm for the wrong reasons. Usually looks cool but not so this year. :shh
If Kosi is on 500K then they are more fornicated than what we have been known to be in the past.
:lol :rollin :lol

Leigh Montagna
this bloke
Edit: Given the investigation is still open we can't refer to anything about it even subtly or in jest.

Can I say he's a ladies man?

Contract silence is deafening

"Forget Collingwood," one leading player manager said last week. "The story you should be writing is St Kilda."
The Saints have serious list management issues, with a host of top line Saints out of contract. When various football types get together (we are in the middle of the NAB AFL U18 championships) the issue of how the Saints will keep their list together is a frequent topic of conversation.
Brendon Goddard and Leigh Montagna head the list of uncontracted Saints, while fellow veterans Lenny Hayes, Justin Koschitzke, Jason Gram, James Gwilt, Stephen Milne, Sam Gilbert and Raph Clarke are also yet to put pen to paper.
The list of unsigned Saints also includes Rhys Stanley, Arryn Siposs and Jarryn Geary.
The problem for the Saints is, they are sailing close to the wind with their salary cap. It is the reason Zac Dawson walked to Fremantle at the end of last season and why Luke Ball went to Collingwood at the end of 2009.
Those outside the club hold little hope that the Saints can re-sign all their big names at the end of this season unless some of those earning considerably big money are prepared to take some sort of financial haircut.
"They'll have to let someone go," said another player manager who asked not to be named. "I can't see how they keep them all, unless they pay some of them significantly less than they are getting at the moment or for far less than they could command in an open market."

Arryn Siposs would be handy. :thumbsup
Couldn't happen to a more sad and sorry footy club.
That article answers why they have saluted the judge only once in 116 seasons and why they are the worst performed footy club in AFL history with 26 wooden spoons.

Goddard

Agree Goddard - but if we could snipe Dempster that would be good as well
-
Still reckon Goddard would fit the bill if we go cold on cloke
-
Goddard is good mates with JR
JR said Goddard is staying at the Saints and could be their next skipper
More likely Mitsubishi Montagna

I had a little argument with a Saints supporter who was trying to say that it was the AFL's fault for his clubs predicament. I was called a "^$%$ head" when I suggested it was a problem of the Saints own causing and they had a history of making poor decisions - as bad as if not worse than Richmond. He did not like it when I started listing their poor decisions over the years:
- Losing Luke Ball to the Pies
- Tim Watson coaching
- Malcolm Blight coaching
- Grant Thomas and Rod Butters situation
- Sacking Stan Alves
- Darryl Cox
- St Kilda school girl photos
- Milne & Montagna rape incident
- Andrew Lovett rape
- Losing Ross Lyon
As bad as think the RFC has been since 1982, spare a thought for the stupidity that has inflicted the Saints
-
- Milne hesitating instead of attacking the ball in the forward pocket.
-
- Molly Meldrum
- Purple Wiggle

Michael Klim
Rod Butters
Grant Thomas
