Title: Ballantyne elbowing Newy
Post by: one-eyed on June 09, 2012, 11:08:20 PM
Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne is likely to attract scrutiny from the AFL match review panel for a clash that left Richmond captain Chris Newman on his knees gasping for breath early in the second quarter.

"I just copped an elbow in the midriff. I was a little bit winded. I think the ball was high and there was a contested situation. I'm not really sure how it happened," Newman said.

Showed the footage on 7 earlier. The dog needs to be fixed up bigtime. Will get off the though, no way near as harsh as king using a reflex tripping action ::)

Has priors I think he has a case to answer. Footage on Newy crouching on the ground like he was going to throw up suggests that the elbow was more forceful than just a fend off or by play.

Was behind play also. MRP will have a look at that and Newy's condition after it amy see that rodent go for a longer holiday after his teams bye.

Darcy? Also mentioned that Newman is a tough guy who doesn't go down for free's so for him to go down in pain would mean there was alot of force

Like I said in another thread....
The thing that upset me the most today was the fact that not one player went over to the little poo and smashed him in the face Scarlett style for giving a cheap one to our captain.
Bloody disgrace that there wasn't anybody in our team to let that pipsqueek know that was unacceptable  :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead

I'm not sure that would achieve anything other than a 4-6 week suspension? :huh
Now if he is there to be split down the middle in a contest for the ball and you can split him in half without getting 4 weeks then  :thumbsup

I did notice rance and Morris have a go at him later in the game but it wouldve been so much better if a few of the blokes let him know then & there... "DONT MESS WITH OUR CAPTAIN!!!"

i'm sure old frankie costa instilled some old school retribution into some of those cats players.
Even Mooney on SEN was peeed off and wanted someone to teach that prick a lesson.

It was very disappointing in light of how much Newman is loved by the boys that noone took it on himself to let that prick know he's not getting away with that rubbish.

I too wanted someone to knock the snot out of him.  Where's Jake when you need him?

Really gets under my skin when Jake King gets pilloried by the umpires and MRP for nothing anywhere near as dirty or antagonistic as that little weazel, and yet even after being publicly 'outed' as a serial offending pest he still gets more protection than little Gazza.  Something's not right with that whole scene.

Nathan Brown on the Sunday Footy Show just said that at Lids' engagement party last night Newy had an ice pack on his chest. If there is a medical report then Ballantyne is screwed since the MRP have been all over them this year.

Everyone whinges about the umps when their teams lose. I hate complaining to anyone because it just makes me/us sound like sore losers. But it's true, we get absolutely crucified every week. I remember sitting at Etitard last week and getting messages from my one-eyed Colonwood brother, "bloody hell, what do you blokes have to do for a free kick?"

Newman comments bad for Ballantyne's hopes of avoiding ban
Steve Butler
The West Australian

Fremantle antagonist Hayden Ballantyne is again facing suspension after damning evidence from Chris Newman over an incident during the 12-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday.

Ballantyne buried his right elbow into Newman's stomach at the back of a marking duel in the second quarter, leaving the Tigers skipper on his haunches. He said he felt ill after the blow.

"I just copped an elbow in the midriff," Newman said.

"It felt like I wanted to vomit, but it just wouldn't come up … I was a little bit winded. I'm not really sure how it happened, but it didn't feel great."

His statement could lead the AFL match review panel to judge the blow as medium impact. With a reckless assessment of the contact, Ballantyne could face a one-match ban, or could miss two games if it is deemed intentional.

The action was similar to the one which led to Ballantyne being suspended for two matches after hitting Geelong's Paul Chapman with an elbow in round one.

Hayden Ballantyne, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence against Chris Newman, Richmond, during the second quarter of the Round 11 match between Fremantle and Richmond, played at the MCG on Saturday June 9, 2012.

In summary, due to his poor record, his sanction must remain as a one-match penalty, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Richmond Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

He has an existing bad record of four matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 40 per cent to 175 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He also has 2.50 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 177.50 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 133.13 points and a one-match sanction.

This wasn't nudging someone away just before the ball dropped. It was a fully fledged 180 degree elbow swing to the guts when the ball was still 15 odd metres away. It was the filthiest bit of play that I have seen for quite some time.

There are only 1 of 2 things to do when your captain gets felled like that on the field. You are either on your way to kicking or assisting a goal, or you are making your captain's attacker pay a heavy price for what he did.

There was a square up later, he was put on his arse and was looking up like he was being set upon, weak prick.  But it was so much later that it looked disconnected from the event.  I don't think the other players realised what he did til later because he is a cunning little sh it

I agree with it being dirty, it is country football 2nds dirty.

Elbowing/hitting someone when they're not expecting it, when they are focused on the ball, is what an overweight 40yo who is too slow and no good anymore does to the talented kid in the opposition side.

Low impact? Che!  :huh. I hate to see what the little weasel needed to do for it to be even classed as medium impact. Newy was hunched over on the ground for a few minutes afterwards and according to Browny Newy had ice on his midrift later that night. Ballatyne only got a week because of his bad record. He would've got off scott free with just a reprimand otherwise. Seriously what a joke. You bump someone off the ball with a tucked in shoulder and you get 3 weeks (Conca) yet a swinging elbow is just a reprimand unless you already have a bad record  ::).
