CODE-hopper Karmichael Hunt has produced his finest AFL moment, goaling after the siren to hand Gold Coast a stunning upset win over Richmond in Cairns.
In a see-sawing contest, the Suns led by 36 points in the first half, but fell as far as 18 points down in the final term, before booting three goals in time-on to snatch a 13.12 (90) to 13.10 (88) win in front of 10,961 fans at steamy Cazaly's Stadium.
Remarkably, it was their first victory in almost exactly a year, having downed Richmond at the same venue last season, with the Tigers' decision to play home games in Cairns turning into a disaster.
The Suns had looked gone, before a long bomb goal from Josh Caddy then a brilliant effort on the run from Jarrod Harbrow put them within four points just shy of fulltime.
They surged forward from the next centre bounce, where Brandon Matera hit Hunt 25m out with a beautiful pass, the ex-rugby league star showing great composure to slot the match-deciding shot.
Captain Gary Ablett (33 disposals) starred for the winners, well supported by Harley Bennell, while Matera (two goals) and Harbrow were both key players.
Jack Riewoldt kicked five goals for the Tigers and Robin Nahas four, while Trent Cotchin (38 disposals) and Brett Deledio (36) put in lion-hearted efforts.
The loss took Richmond to a 7-8 record and could be a crucial dent in their finals hopes.
There were danger signs for Richmond even before the game started.
In-form ruckman Ivan Maric and key defender Ben Griffiths were both late withdrawals, adding to a long list of missing first-choice players.
Ablett and Bennell racked up touches in the first half, while Campbell Brown kicked one goal and set up others to Bennell and David Swallow in the first term to set up a two-goal quarter-time lead.
Things turned really dire for Richmond when defender Alex Rance had to be helped from the field with a leg injury in the second quarter and his opponent, Suns debutant Josh Hall, kicked two quick goals to help extend the lead to 36 points.
Rance returned and the Tigers kicked two late first-half goals, before coming out a renewed side in the third term, to kick the first five goals of the quarter, including three to Nahas, to surge in front.
They looked home after kicking three of the first four goals of the last term, before the Suns' spirited late revival.

FOUR POINTS
with Gilbert Gardiner
Herald-Sun
1. DUSTIN Martin had seen enough of Richmond's slow start against the Gold Coast, legging it to the airport before quarter-time on Saturday. Martin, who is serving a club-imposed two-match ban for missing a training session, travelled with the team to Cairns to host a footy clinic and attend a pre-match function.
2. GOLD Coast's effectiveness from stoppages was key to the Suns securing their first win of the season, according to exclusive Champion Data stats on Live HQ. The Suns booted 5.5 from stoppages compared to the Tigers' 2.2.
3. JULY 16, 201,1 was the last time Gold Coast registered an AFL victory. 364 days later, at the same venue, against the same opposition, the Suns repeated the dose with a come-from-behind two-point win over Richmond at Cazaly's Stadium.
4.GROWING up, Karmichael Hunt would have dreamt of scoring the match-winning try in an Origin decider for Queensland, never an AFL match. But yesterday, Hunt did the unthinkable.
The NRL convert marked with only three seconds remaining on the clock. He went back and slotted the match-winning goal from 30m.

Five talking points: Richmond v Gold Coast
By Jason Phelan

1. Hunt seals it after the siren
Karmichael Hunt hadn't had a huge impact on the game in Cairns, but he made his presence felt in the frantic final stages at Cazaly's Stadium. With just seconds remaining Hunt got on the end of a Brandon Matera's quick kick inside 50 and held the mark as the final siren sounded with his team four points down. He kicked truly and was swamped by his jubilant teammates as they celebrated their first win of the season.
2. Déjà vu
There were some eerie similarities between last year's Richmond-Gold Coast game and Saturday's clash between the two sides at Cazaly's Stadium. The Tigers went to Cairns last year looking to launch a late run to September, but suffered an upset loss that dashed their finals hopes. Richmond has more wins on the board this time around, but still suffered the same result. Will it dash the Tigers' finals hopes now as it did then?
3. Jumpin' Josh Hall
Josh Hall, a former elite high jumper, looked lively up forward for the Suns in his AFL debut. With a personal best high jump of 2.26m, Hall is a chance to take mark of the year at some stage of his career, but he impressed with his strength overhead and at the ball. He kicked two goals in the first half and added a bit of spark in attack before being subbed out at half-time.
4. Cotchin and Deledio do their bit
Trent Cotchin and Brett Deledio can certainly hold their heads high despite the shock result. The midfield pair had 74 possessions between them as they tried to drag their team over the line. The duo was good early when most of their teammates seemed to be going through the motions and they very nearly proved the difference between the two sides.
5. Not this time
Gold Coast has held a lead at half-time five times this season and been run down on all five occasions. The Suns led against Fremantle, North Melbourne, GWS, Geelong and the Bulldogs, but were mowed down in the second half by all of them. That scenario looked on the cards again as they surrendered their lead midway through the third term, but Guy McKenna's men dug deep and finally bucked the trend.
