A 12-year-old boy was grabbed around the neck and verbally abused by a foul-mouthed football fan as the boy celebrated his team hitting the lead at the MCG on the weekend.
Police confirmed this morning that they are investigating the incident, which happened during Saturday night's clash between Richmond and Carlton.
The sad thing about it is he said, 'Look, I don't think I want to go and watch another match', and all that he wanted to do was watch his favourite player.
Dina Stephens said her son Marcus jumped up in excitement when the Tigers hit the lead in the final quarter but was quickly grabbed around the neck by a Carlton supporter, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, who pushed him back into his seat.
The man had grabbed Marcus with two hands and unleashed a foul-mouthed rant, one of several during the night, Ms Stephens said.
"I was absolutely disgusted that he laid his hands on a boy, you know, on a child. That's just unacceptable," Ms Stephens told radio station 3AW. "You just don't go to the footy and do that to anyone, let alone a child."
She said her son attended the match with his 11-year-old friend and his friend's mother, but Marcus did not raise the alarm during the match because he was terrified.
"He just sat there after it happened and basically didn't move," Ms Stephens said.
"He came home and was very upset when he told me. The sad thing about it is he said, 'Look, I don't think I want to go and watch another match', and all that he wanted to do was watch his favourite player, which is Ivan Maric for Richmond, and now that's spoiled."
She said the boys were sitting in the members' section but had moved back about eight rows during the rain and it was unclear whether they were still sitting in the members' section when the attack occurred.
Ms Stephens reported the incident to police.
A police spokeswoman confirmed officers were investigating an incident between two football fans, including a pre-teen boy, at the MCG on Saturday night. She said no one was injured.
Melbourne Cricket Club spokesman Shane Brown said the club only became aware of the incident this morning.
“It is very disappointing to hear that a young boy should have such an experience while at the MCG. We will be in touch with the boy’s family today to obtain further information,’’ he said.
“Our understanding is that a complaint was made to Victoria Police on Sunday. As there was no report or complaint made to our security team or event staff on Saturday night, we were unable to take any action at the time.
‘‘Patrons are able to send a text message to our control room from their seats, which enables us to respond promptly to potential incidents and, ideally, prevent a situation from escalating.”

I don't want to go and watch another either!

What occurred wasnt a funny event, the Carlton supporter is nothing but an absolute BASTARD and I hope the cops catch the MANGY FUCKWITT and charge him with assaulting a young Kid. Wouldnt accept anything better from a club full of BASTARDS.
-
I agree Flags. Society oftens bemoans the fact that kids these days would rather commit a crime or play a video game than do other pro-social activities and yet they are subjected to that! :banghead
-
Didn't one of them punch a woman round 1? And people call Richmond supporters feral...
-
l find this all a bit hard to beleive, many supporters around would have seen this and stepped in or called security.
Does the mother not watch her kids.
-
Typical of carlton filth, why doesnt it suprise me ....gee he knows how to pick his battles, throttling the nearest 12yo....should face a life ban :shh

Hardwick's son?
No but I'm pretty sure when asked why they choked in the last Qtr, our leadership turned to that 12 year old boy and said "he started it!"

Bit hard to do anything when the moron's already grab the kid TM. Don't think a kid jumping up to celebrate a goal deserves to grab by some brain dead scumbag
BTW the lad went to the game with is mate and his mates mother
Also, speaking for personal experience from earlier in the year when I had a cup of beer thrown on me reality of the times is people simply don't get involved these days.
-
Good on the Club organising big Ivan to meet the kid to give him a signed jumper by the look of it and encourage him to keep going to games :clapping.
It was shown on Ch 10 news tonight and according to RFC twitter it will also be shown on Ch 7 and 9 newses.
-
Seriously would happily take the kid to game on one of my extra m'ships
Reserve seats amongst the Tiger faithful
Going by the news last night he lives near me ;D
-
Good on ya Big Ivan.
Also noticed on the TV in the last qtr after a ball went out of bounds, some Carlton flog had a dig at a Richmond woman sitting in front of him. Expect nothing less from filth.
This incident with the kid, Carlton supporters should have stepped in. Bit of an ask for RFC supporters to try an calm an opposition supporter down. Anyone with their head screwed on would have toold their fellow supporter to pull his head in. I'd be worried that if I was there getting involved I'd get that into it I'd throw the bastard off the top tier.
-
RFC twitter said ch 7, ch 7 however played 10 secs from what I saw ::)
Lucky i tuned into ch 10, showed the whole thing ;D
Good on the club too :thumbsup

Sorry - Tiger supporters are not feral - just a little emotionally charged at times.
Also any supporter should have "handled" the situation not just Carlton supporters - it was wrong and therefore if you can do something about it ......you do it!
What if it was your own kid - you would want someone to do something!
-

Absolutely agree but as I said these people just don't seem to do anything anymore, just don't want to get involved
Is it right? Nope but it seems the way of the world alot of the time these days

I saw this too, dirty scumbag filth . . . the woman was 2 seats in front and he was getting aggressive to the point if she bit back he probably would have hit her. Shouldn't have to put up with that crap at a game of footy.

Spirit of the Tiger helps young fan ease memories of MCG ordeal

A CLASH with a threatening bloke at the MCG shook 12-year-old Marcus Stephens' love of the game. But kicking the footy yesterday with imposing Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric helped bring it back again.
Marcus, a Tigers fan, said he had been grabbed by the throat and sworn at by an adult Carlton supporter for celebrating a goal at the MCG on Saturday night. Marcus' mother Dina said her son and his friends were thrilled Richmond gave them the opportunity to spend time with Maric.
Ms Stephens said the mulleted Maric was Marcus' favourite player because he met him and shook his hand at a family day earlier this year.
''It was a good day, he was pretty excited and happy that he got to spend time with Ivan,'' she said. ''I'm pretty sure he'll go to the footy again, he keeps saying he'll give it one more go.''
Ms Stephens said she was not sure what Maric had said to encourage Marcus to go to the football again, after he had feared returning because of his ordeal. ''I'm not sure what Ivan said, but Marcus has been talking about it all day,'' she said.
Ms Stephens and Marcus gave formal statements to police about the incident yesterday.
A Melbourne Cricket Club spokesman would not comment on whether the Carlton fan had been identified, but said any information had been passed on to police.

A life ban and a roundhouse kick to the head.
Those Carlscum filth are by far the worst supporters I've ever encountered in 35 years of attending footy matches. Can't even exchange friendly lighthearted banter with these morons.
I "wish" I saw that scumbag Saturday night......

Probably ended up knocking the poo out of the Carlton bloke. Typical tanker supporter >:(
