I sometimes wish i never became a supporter. I have no family history of Richmond supporters, i didn't play for a club that wore Tiger jumpers. I just loved Michael Roach!
So how did you become a Tiger supporter? Did you inherit it? Did you play a club who wore black and yellow? Are you EMO and like the idea of putting yourself through this type of torment? Were you lucky enough to be influenced by our era of success in the late 60's/ early 70s?

My father barracked for them because he followed Chewton in the Castlemaine District League and they were the Tigers. He passed it onto his 2 sons and 1 of his daughters. I have passed it onto every one of my 5 children and can count 3 definites and 2 sometimes (Lions and Bombers are the opposition) out of my 8 grandchildren - the other 3 are too young to know/judge yet but the 2 year old can sing the song!

Dad is a Tiger so I became one.

Gee Smokey, good stuff. You could nearly achieve our members target through your lineage alone!
Sadly, my young bloke barracks for the Saints and he is a 7 y.o. I said to him," Why don't you barrack for the Tigers anymore?" And he said, "Because they never win." :'(

Did you tell your boy that St Kilda have won 1 premiership in over 100 years?

I don't have contact with him anymore, he is homeless. ;D

:lol

My uncle and cousin barracked for Richmond.
They brainwashed me plus I liked Tigers as a kid.

We beat them this year.. That should have been enough for him to switch back?
-
Had a Richmond Junior Squadron membership and a Richmond beanie on my head prior to leaving the hospital days after birth.
Born in 79, was a 1yo last time we won it.
Not much joy since

I have tried everything to no avail. A run of Tiger victories will help though.

Dad is a mad Tiger. We moved to Brisbane when I was young and we watched the Bears at Cararra. Dad doesn't believe in forcing teams onto children so mum and dad used to deck me out in Bears gear since it was the home side. For some reason I picked up on the Swans instead when I was young (I think because when I looked up old photos of Capper he was in red and white), but as I grew up I slowly just grew into the Tiges so I could enjoy the football with dad. I often look back and wonder how less stressful footy would have been if I just stuck with Sydney :banghead
-
Good Topic. Was born in a year we won a premiership. No one in my family supports them. I also liked Tigers as a kid
-
Decided on them back in 1972
My Dad was a Pies fan but he never made us follow the Pies. He just said we could follow whichever team we wanted but once we made the choice we had to stick with that team no matter what.
I don't remember being told (I was 5 at the time) that but Ma Powell always said that's what we were told and what my Dad wanted. My Dad passed away when I was 7 so we never got to go to the footy together
1972 I decided best looking jumper in the GF would be my team.
Been the Tigers ever since.
That's one of my regrets not being able to go to the footy with my Dad, Tigers -v- Pies at the MCG
-
Was 1973, needed a footy jumper for east burwood footy clinic, school uniform was getting embarrasing, id only ever heard of RFC or North Melbourne..with older brother and neighbours Richmond, the choice was overwhelming. Boy im lucky i chose wisely, must have been divine intervention :shh
-
Born and bred in Richmond....I had no choice in the matter..thank Geez for that

Looks like father/ son rule is winning!

Sorry to hear that, WP. Most people would take that for granted.Had a Richmond Junior Squadron membership and a Richmond beanie on my head prior to leaving the hospital days after birth.

I was born in 73, can't remeber that years flag. Nor the following. Not old enough to appreciate 1980.1972 I decided best looking jumper in the GF would be my team.
Been the Tigers ever since.
1972 still hurts me and i wasn't alive to see it.

Whole family are Hawks supportors when it was time to choose i asked who was on top of the ladder to which a irritated and low mumbled "Richomnd " came out of my fathers mouth... Best choice i ever made
-
I grew up in the recruiting zone, all our junior footy clinics and pie nights had tiger players attending which made the choice easy.
3 flags in my first few years on the planet was necessary icing to the cake along with great colours, logo and theme song.
-
Dad barracked for Richmond
Went to my first game at the age of 6 in 1966
Seen 5 flags
Can remember Paddy Guinane.John Northey stuff Dimattina Graeme Burgin.Roger Dean etc etc
Was in the rooms after the Windy Hill brawl the day Whale Roberts got hit
-
jack....Roger Dean was my first hero..That adulation didnt last long though because along came my all time magnificent seven....KB,Bourke,barrot,clay,hart,sheedy,and oddly enough Michael green(in my opinion a truly great ruckman)
-
Michael Green legend player, legend bloke :thumbsup
-
Was in the rooms after the Windy Hill brawl the day Whale Roberts got hit
Was there that day also Jack, standing with my old man in the crowd on the wing near the players race as it all unfolded. Still remember it crystal clear - Essendon crowd going ape and me (as a naive teenager) having the smug arrogance of being invincible and having absolute righteousness on my side. So much has changed since then! :whistle
-
Born in 1974 an RFC Premiership Year. There's reason 1. Didn't know it then but has a nice ring to it nowadays. :thumbsup
1979 can vaguely remember Roach in the number 8 tearing St Kilda a new one at Waverley on Seven's Big League. Roach wore number 8 and I'm born on the 8th. Hooked for life. :thumbsup

My parents & myself came to Australia in 1968 and we lived in Richmond first. Dad said we should follow the Tigers as we lived there.
First game was in 1973 or 1974 when my neighbor (a Carlton supporter) to me to the MCG to see Richmond v Carlton. I saw Francis Bourke shake hands with Brent Crosswell and thought gee he's a nice bloke - because I then remember Crosswell kept trying to hit anyone who went near him. Tigers won by 56 points and Bourke shook hands with Crosswell at the end of the game as well.
I always thought that Bourke was a good role model - tough, fair yet a true sportsman.
-
What is this, a retirement home? :outtahere
-
by the way I will not allow freedom of choice in my family home with regards to footy teams - it's Richmond or get out
-
Big Pappi up in here
-
When I was six I decided I was going to be a Hawthorn supporter and told my "footy ignorant" mother to buy me the yellow and brown jumper.Mum obviously thought black was close enough to brown....the rest is history
Thanks Mum.

So you're really a Whorethorn supporter :D

As a little tacker I thought Wayne Campbell looked like the green power ranger. Dad had no chance with the pies

Dad is a Tiger supporter and I just followed.
I do remember changing teams every now and then for about a day or so as a kid, but I always got drawn back to the Tigers.
I'm currently brainwashing my two little tackers, hopefully they'll see some success.

Arrived form OS in 1985, Was wooed by many clubs supporters, was just about to sign up with the Pies, then Hawthorn, then saw RFC beat Hawthorn at Princes Park of all places. The wife went for Hawthorn and lucky me went for the Tiges.
For some time I thought our theme song was "Whisky Can and Tin" instead of "Risking head and shin", maybe that was what did it!!.

Nealy exactly me Jack excpet I wasnt in the rooms that day. All the rest is exact.
I also was Born in Richmond, lived in a Richmond recruiting zone (oakleigh), had a hand knitted Richond jumper before I was 1 and Played for the Tigers little league. Basically there was no hope for me. I also passed the curse to my two girls and my wife (She was a Balmian Tiger girl so it wasnt hard). Was there in 1969 and remember swipping a "Council of Richmond no parking sign" after the 1973 flag (or 74 not sure).

I do recall he did, that may also have been the day they made a special tie featuring Roachy??
-
It is a fathers god given right to inflict this curse on his children. I was anointed in 1968 and I passed it on to my son in 1991 and he too one day will pass it onto his son.

Post of the year
-
30 or so years ago a family member got a job with the Club (Under 19s). So as a kid I spent every second winter weekend at Punt Rd where we still played home games at that level. Occasionally the U19s were the curtainraiser to the seniors at the 'G so we were allowed in the rooms of the seniors. As a kid you thought it was Christmas. I still don't understand why Doug Searl who coached the U19s to (two) premierships, like Pagan did at North in the 80s, never got a senior gig at Richmond.
-
My old man's uncle was a player for Ruthless Richmond. There was never a thought to follow anyone else. It's in the blood! Pity no one in the family since has shown any ability! Saw my first game live in '66 and saw five premierships by my 23rd birthday. Still waiting for number six.

It was 1974 and I was a Collingwood supporter (oh the shame) but wasn't really too happy about being one as my neighbour who was the biggest sook (and dribbled a lot) was one too. I sat next to this girl in Grade 3 and all year she went on and on about Richmond so I ended up saying that if they won the Grand Final I would change to Richmond. I kept my word. My children have been told they will be disinherited if they change. My great grandfather actually played for Melbourne and played in the first Victorian interstate team.
-
do some around he deserve to be tiger supporters. :gobdrop

I jumped on the bandwagon after the Hawthorn win this year.
Haven't looked back since.

My mother showed me a picture of the mascots and I chose one. The next day she presented me with the jumper and I cried because she bought the wrong one :'(.....You see, I had actually chosen the Hawks and she thought I pointed out the Tigers :o. It worked for me when I was young but all-in-all I lost out big time. :facepalm
