Here's the article on the RFC website about Newy stepping down as captain ...

“It’s probably something I’ve been thinking about for a little while.  I think it’s just the right time,” Newman said.

“I’ve had the privilege of being captain for four years, and I think whoever takes over this role can lead the boys into the success that I think is coming.

“I still pinch myself a bit.  To captain an AFL side, let alone the Richmond Football Club, is mind-blowing when I think of it.

“I don’t think I’d step away from the role if I didn’t think there would be players who could lead the way.  Whoever that player is, I’ve got the utmost confidence that they’ll do an even better job than I did.”

Give it to chimp. Chimp is a spiritual leader. Classy courageous and a champion. He can carry this side on his broad shoulders and get blokes to do things they don't want to do.

Let Lids be a vice captain. Has a professionalism you can't fault but Cotch needs to be the skipper. The aura this kid exudes speaks volumes. :thumbsup

Title: Cotchin no given for captaincy: Newman (afl)

Cotchin no given for captaincy: Newman
By Nick Bowen
Sun 02 Sep, 2012

OUTGOING Richmond captain Chris Newman says the popular perception vice-captain Trent Cotchin will be his successor is far from a fait accompli.

Newman told his teammates before Sunday's draw against Port Adelaide that the game would be his last as Richmond skipper.

Mindful that at 30 he was getting towards the latter stages of his career, Newman said his decision to step down was largely influenced by the fact that anyone in the Tigers' leadership group (Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Daniel Jackson and Jack Riewoldt) was capable of replacing him.

And despite Cotchin's outstanding 2012 season - when he has emerged as one of the competition's best midfielders, averaging 27.5 possessions - and obvious leadership qualities, Newman suggested the 22-year-old faced stiff opposition to take over as Richmond skipper in 2013.

"Anyone of the boys in our leadership group could step into my shoes and lead the club forward," Newman said in Richmond's post-match press conference.

"'Cotchy' is certainly one of those; he leads naturally no doubt.

"Brett Deledio is another one who'd be keen to take that position too.

"But I think any of those boys could quite easily fill my shoes but not only do that but do a better job than I did."

Tigers, Port all tied up

Sitting alongside Newman, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick also suggested the race to replace Newman would not be a one-horse affair.

"We'll go through a process like we did last year. Obviously our group play by a set of standards and values and we'll just work our way through who the best candidate is ... I'm not too sure when," Hardwick said.

Hardwick paid tribute to the leadership Newman had given Richmond since taking over from Kane Johnson at the end of 2008.

"There are certain blokes at footy clubs that are very, very special and Chris is one of those guys," Hardwick said.

"I've got no doubt he has been the single driver in what has transformed this club from where we've come from three years ago to where we are now at.

"We've still got a long way to go. We understand that. But he's a guy that's certainly dragged us forward ... [when] we weren't quite sure where we were going to be at.

"He'll be remembered for a long time for what he's done for this football club."

Has done a good job as Captain through some of the toughest times a captain would need to go through.

Stepping down now also adds points to him as he could have just as well held onto it longer, but he did what was right for the club. Good work Newy  :cheers :gotigers

I was hoping Newman would stay in the role for one more year to give Cotch time to completely focus on his game rather than gets swamped by all the leadership/peripheral obligations. Cotch's game may dip next year, assuming he gets the gig, as he gets used to balancing his football with leading such a huge club as Richmond.

If you could organise that Lids had it for a couple of years first before passing it over that would ideal but that won't happen. Lids is too young and proud for something like that to happen.

Cotch is something Chris wasn't - a born leader. That is not to say that Chris didn't warm to the role. Cotch will go down as an all-time great.

Made a decision that was selfless and had the best interests of the club at heart. Good on him. Deserves very high credit for his actions. I really hope next year he really has a very fantastic year. He gave his best as a captain in very dark times for the club

Dropped enough at he after match to suggest Cotch has it, I mean seriously you couldn't give it to someone then just take it away unless they are total poo! Has it ever happened?
