Cairns' heat set to prepare elite sports sides
Sportingpulse - AFL Cairns
10th October 2012
Tapping into the heat and humidity of the Far North could be the key to sports tourism, with AFL club Richmond visiting Cairns next month for preseason training.
Director of Quest Queensland Elite Sports Training David Arnfield, who launched the business in Cairns earlier this year with his partner Fiona John, said this region is an idyllic location for elite sports training to help teams like the Tigers.
"We have the infrastructure, airport, accommodation, and the conditions - it's warm, which is what a lot of these elite sporting teams want in terms of training," he said.
"We are confident that Richmond will open the gate to similar opportunities with other clubs and put Cairns on the map as a serious contender when choosing a training base or preseason camp."
A delegation of 75 players, coaches and corporate partners will arrive in Cairns on November 26 and stay for a week, also visiting Cape Tribulation, and promising an injection of $120,000 into the Far Northern economy. AFL Cairns president Gary Young said he hoped the appeal of heat training would appeal to international sports people. "We can provide heat training in spades and it's seen as more beneficial than traditional altitude training," he said. "I would like Manchester United and the Yankees to come to Cairns and see it as the world's best training ground."

1week, big deal waste of money, go the FTF!!

How about they win in Cairns next season and never play a home game there again. :thumbsup
-
Meh, usual yearly junket for the club and a few rich members.
Neither here nor there about this.
At least it will be cheaper than the Arizona/Athletes Performance trip last year.
-
Strange choice given our recent experience.
-
does this mean that a follow up trip to Arizona is now off the agenda?
-
Isn't it wet season up there then. If so, won't get much training done!
-
They allready follow the suns, the only thing we will get is tropical ulcers
-
Seeing the 2 Qld states carve it up this season i am all for the training there , massive advantage .... Not !!
Might throw in the long term effects of high altitude training as well , all utter frogpoo to me .Team bonding is the core reason surely it lets the new recruits merge with the group and forms new friends and bonds thus changing the dynamics and culture of the playing group for the better or worse ...
Have to say haven't been involved with a football club for 15 years now so i dont pretend to know , only presume.

Healthy Tigers head to the tropics for annual pre-season camp in Cairns
Sam Edmund
From: Herald Sun
November 26, 2012
RICHMOND flies out today for its pre-season camp in significantly better shape than this time last year.
Coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers were far healthier than a year ago, when several off-season surgeries delayed several players' summer programs.
Richmond will set up camp in Cairns this afternoon, having only recent hamstring victim Dylan Grimes and Nathan Foley (achilles) on rehabilitation programs.
"We're a lot better than this time last year, which is really important," Hardwick said.
"We certainly had a number of operations we brought forward towards the end of last season and a lot of those guys are up and going now.
"We're pleased with where we're at thus far."
Grimes, who this year flew to Germany for treatment on his troublesome left hamstring, strained the muscle again at training on Friday.
But Foley will travel with the squad after making good progress on the club's AlterG anti-gravity treadmill.
"Nathan can feel that he's progressing a little bit quicker than where he was, because he can gradually increase his bodyweight, even at a walking pace on the AlterG," elite performance manager Peter Burge said this month.
Hardwick said the 10-day trip - the first duty for new captain Trent Cotchin - would be a blend of team bonding and intense training.
"It will be a little bit of both, but there'll be a lot of hard work up there," he said.
"Obviously the heat and humidity will be something that will certainly test the guys physically and mentally. We're looking forward to seeing how they react.
"Then there'll be a bit of fun at the end with regards to some adventure racing and that sort of thing, so it will be an exciting camp."

Richmond’s players departed this morning for a nine-day training camp in Cairns.
The camp, which was made possible by the support of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, will be a mix of football training and team bonding exercises.
It will also be the first opportunity for the Club’s newest draftees to join in with the main group, just four days after they were selected at the National Draft.
....
The Roar Vision cameras will follow the players’ progress on the camp, with regular updates available at richmondfc.com.au.

Thinking abnout it the Club could make an easy $100-$200K for the FTF off this jaunt up to cairns
Instead of trying to sell $200 raffle tickets which a lot of stuff can't afford why wouldn't they offer 10-20k raffle tickets at $10 each with first prize being the nine day trip to Cairns with the team?

Richmond Tigers feeling the heat
Murray Wenzel
The Cairns Post
Tuesday, November 27, 2012
EXACTLY what the Richmond Tigers are put through in the next 10 days is a mystery to them, they just know it is going to be hot.
Forty-five players and about 30 staff arrived in Cairns yesterday ahead of a pre-season camp that will feature an Amazing Race-style journey from Gordonvale to the Daintree.
It is the first time they have chosen the Far North for this purpose, having played and lost two AFL premiership games against Gold Coast Suns in the past two seasons.
Tigers midfielder Daniel Jackson said the trip would give them a welcome change of scenery from Melbourne and a chance for the new recruits to familiarise themselves with the club.
"It's exciting; just a change of atmosphere is always a good thing. I'm not sure I won't be looking forward to the heat so much in a few days' time when we're sweating it out," he said. "We have four guys just drafted that haven't really met anyone so this trip will be invaluable for them."
The players train in a special heat chamber at their Punt Rd headquarters, but Jackson said they were still nervous about facing Mother Nature in steamy Cairns.
"There's trepidation about how we'll cope with the heat up here, but we know it's going to be gruelling and hard work so the results will be positive," he said. Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said it was a no-brainer to tap into the heat and humidity on offer in Cairns.
"The heat component of the training is something we're looking hard into," he said.
"The club will invest heavily in that and you can't get much hotter in Australia than Cairns, I must say. If you want to experience it in this country, you have to do it here."
The team trained at Cazalys yesterday and will do so again today and on Thursday , before their mystery trip takes them from south of Cairns deep into the Daintree.
While the Tigers think they are on a good thing, Leppitsch stopped short of saying other clubs would be copying their strategy.
"Everyone has their philosophies, but people tend to copy the best teams, so once we climb the ladder again I'm sure people will analyse our methods," he said.
Their loss to the Suns last season, that came in the form of a goal after the siren to rugby league convert Karmichael Hunt, hurt their charge towards the top eight and the Tigers eventually finished in 12th spot.
A repeat of that would not sit well with the club, who have their sights set on a return to September football for the first time since 2001.
Jackson said that involved notching a win in Cairns after two failed attempts.
"It's no longer about developing. The boys are a bit older, wiser, skilful, fitter; we're ready to attack next season with everything we've got," he said.
"Certainly we've struggled to deal with the conditions and this trip will really help."

Tigers hope to feel the burn
By Sam Davis
abc.net.au
27 November, 2012
Hot pre-season sessions burning under the Cairns sun will give the Richmond Tigers a better fitness base for next year says midfielder Nathan Foley.
The Tigers touched down in far north Queensland and enjoyed a light session on Monday, before enduring some gruelling running drills in a two hour workout at Cazaly's Stadium on Tuesday morning.
Still recovering from a partial rupture of his achilles tendon that left him sidelined for the second half of last year, Mr Foley says the squad also has a chance to get to know each other off the field.
"It's a good opportunity to have some team bonding and that sort of stuff," he says. "We had a few meetings last night ... and I'm looking forward to seeing what unfolds in the week ahead."
"Obviously we're looking to try and build a greater fitness base through training in the heat and that's been the major focus."
Cairns has been less than hospitable to the Tigers the last two seasons with the club losing winnable games against the Gold Coast Suns at Cazaly's Stadium in 2011 and 2012.
Under their current agreement with the AFL, the Tigers will play the Suns in Cairns for the last time next year.
Despite their poor record, Mr Foley says he hopes to leave Cairns on a winning note in 2013.
"At the end of the day it probably hasn't been a happy hunting ground for us up here," he says.
"The Gold Coast have stolen eight points off us in the two games. We just hope to make amends next year."
As part of the trip the club is welcoming recent draft picks Nick Vlastuin, Kamdyn McIntosh, Liam McBean and Matthew McDonough who were selected last Thursday on the Gold Coast.
Mr Foley says the quartet show promise and are being eased into training.
"It's certainly a good way to come into the club," he says. "They'll spend ten days with the whole group and by the end of the camp they'll know everyone pretty well."
"They're excited, naturally a little bit nervous and as a group we'll welcome them as well as we possibly can and try to make them feel comfortable."

Heat is on in Cairns
richmondfc.com.au
Wed 28 Nov, 2012
Richmond’s players will sweat through a third-consecutive day of intense training in Cairns today.
For the opening days of the pre-season camp, the Tigers have mixed football training with strength and conditioning, in hot conditions in North Queensland.
On Tuesday, the players got through almost two hours of training on Cazaly’s Stadium, before a weights session at the Sportsworld Fitness Centre.
The Roar is Back in 2013. Become a member today.
It was a similar format for the first day of the trip, on Monday.
Richmond’s newest draftees have participated in most of the training so far, while some of last year’s fresh faces, Brandon Ellis and Matt Arnot, have impressed in running drills.

Heat specialist joins Tiger camp
By Jaimee Damon
afl.com.au
Wed 28 Nov, 2012
Richmond has been joined on its pre-season camp in Cairns by Chris Minson, who is the Professor of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon in America.
Professor Minson, a specialist in heat training for athletes, has been hired by the Club as a consultant on the trip, while the players train in Cairns’ hot, humid weather.
He addressed the players on the first night of the camp, explaining the performance benefits of heat training and the type of results that training in such conditions can achieve.
“A number of games they’ll be playing will be in the heat, and there are clear benefits of heat acclimation on performance in the heat. And so, since they’re going to be playing in those kind of conditions, getting some training in those conditions is ideal for them,” Professor Minson told ‘Roar Vision’.
“Absolutely, it will help them in the season. I know a lot of the season is in winter, where it’s cooler, but there will be the early part of the season, end of the season there’ll be hot games, and if you develop heat acclimation, you can maintain it throughout the season by doing some very specific training.
“And, our research has shown some real benefits from heat acclimation even in cooler weather performance . . . that’s one of the unique aspects we’re trying to bring to the camp.”
Professor Minson is convinced heat acclimation far better suits Richmond’s needs, rather than the high-altitude training, which has become part of the training regime at several league clubs in recent years.
“The use of high-altitude is really popular right now . . . but the results are very mixed,” he said.
“Some people respond to it very well and some people do not.
“Because you guys don’t ever play in high altitude, the focus here is more on heat.
“If they were going to high altitude, you’d want to have a component of that. But, in consultation with the team, the heat acclimation seems to be a more profound and longer-lasting benefit.”
Professor Minson has quickly become an Australian Football convert, after looking at some videos of AFL matches.
“It’s fantastic. It’s a very fast-moving game. American games are very stop-start, and then you watch a bunch of commercials. This is just much more exciting ,” he said. "But I’m also very impressed with the players and the fitness level they’re able to obtain.
“Richmond is doing everything right from what I can tell. “From the coaches, the fitness group, the players, it’s just a one-unit team, working really, really well together.
“It’s extremely impressive to see.”

I never really understood the level of fitness required for elite athletes - most people think they know it's hard. But until you actually experience it - you can really never know.
We just had the former Fitness coach of the Australian Womens Ski team doing core & agility fitness training at our cricket club. He gave a range of repetitions of each of the exercises so that we could each try to attain our own level. Then he advised us what was expected from the elite athlete. Some of our lads are very fit - but they melted! I told him to get stuffed (jokingly) when he said that a 44 yo should be able to do 2-4 reps min. When he advised what his girls were able to do - we all said that's crap! Then he proved it as he was able to complete all the exercises himself - and he was on 40 years old!
So anything that improves our boys even 1 or 2 % deserves investigating!
By the way - its been 4 weeks into our training regime and the results in terms of games won and the overall fitness has been positive

Ch 7 news said Chris Minson, who is the Professor of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon in America, was teaching the boys how to hold their breath longer under water. Sandy Roberts wondered how it was going to improve our football.
From that I assume Sandy has never known anyone with asthma? Taking a breath and holding it improves lung capacity (just for anyone wondering).
Yep. KiwiTiger on BF who was up in Cairns with the team summed up why all this stuff will come in handy ...
"His [Mark Visser] training regime was incredible including all the underwater breath holding stuff and lowering his heart rate and clear thinking in high adrenalin situations. Now, if you think about, when might the lowering of heart rate and clear thinking be relevant to us particularly in 2012?"

Sunshine Coast surfer Mark Visser's underwater training attracts attention of world military
by: Peter Hall
From: The Courier-Mail
November 27, 2012
ELITE fighting forces are turning to a Queensland surfer for an edge in life-and-death battles.
Extreme athlete Mark Visser, a cult hero for his big-wave riding, is the star of an adventure series called 9 Lives, due for release next year.
Challenges filmed for 10 adrenalin-charged documentaries included conquering 12m Hawaiian waves at night and jumping from aircraft into locations in the middle of the ocean that attract the largest swells on the planet.
To prepare for catastrophic wipeouts, Visser and his team pioneered new underwater training techniques that "allow people to stay alive in situations previously considered impossible to survive".
The Sunshine Coast 29-year-old said training exercises in the US led to interest from military organisations around the world.
He said he couldn't reveal where the soldiers were from, but three countries were involved.
"The exact nature of what we are teaching cannot be disclosed, but the greatest benefit is the ability to stay mentally calm under extreme physical pressure," he said.
"They need to be tough enough to survive a situation most people would panic and die in. We have training techniques that allow you to override your rational mind and achieve amazing things."
As part of his quest, Visser travelled to the Bahamas to train with world number one freediver William Trubridge, the first person to break the 100m barrier unassisted.
Visser, who can now hold his breath for more than six minutes, said his team had customised some of the new skills for "heavy ocean scenarios".
Before submerging, he does not take a breath and after expelling all the air in his lungs can sink to the bottom of a pool and wait for a minute and 30 seconds before swimming the length of a 50m pool underwater.
"The science of what we are doing is learning to move the body and use less oxygen. It's also about understanding what your body is capable of and dealing with barriers," Visser said.
"It's not dangerous if you are doing the right work with the right guidance."
Richmond AFL players also will benefit from Visser's training insights during their camp at Cairns tomorrow.
A club spokeswoman said Visser would help players boost lung capacity as well as work on mental toughness.

Richmond’s players have embarked on an “Amazing Race” style competition, as part of the next phase of the 2012 pre-season camp.
The group has been divided into teams, and will travel to different destinations in North Queensland, but they have received very little detail about what is ahead of them.
It’ll be up to them to work together to decipher the clues, before making their way to each checkpoint.

Jeep Australia's Partners Team Up to Toughen Up
theautochannel.com
Nov 30, 2012:
The Fiat Chrysler Group has announced that two of their premier ambassador groups have joined forces in a bid to improve their physical and mental stamina.
Mark Visser, Jeep Grand Cherokee driver, big wave surfer and elite athlete adventurer, has flown to Cairns in far north Queensland to run training sessions with leading AFL football club, the mighty Richmond Tigers. The aim is to make the Tigers even tougher as part of their pre-season training.
Visser is an international expert on underwater fitness training – a handy skill considering his day job is surfing 40 foot monster waves – and shares his techniques with elite athletic groups to help them reach the pinnacle of mental and physical fitness. Although the Richmond Tigers are, according to one commentator, “as fit as Mallee bulls,” the team is very excited about honing their toughness in preparation for the 2013 season.
The training sessions involved teaching the Tigers breath-holding techniques that allow people to stay alive in situations previously considered impossible to survive, and which enable them to stay calm under extreme physical pressure.
Sam Tabart, director of marketing at the Fiat Chrysler Group, commented on the commonalities between the two Jeep ambassador groups.
“Mark and the Tigers have been an integral and rewarding part of our brand platform and it’s great to see two of our longest standing partners join forces.
“Both groups share the Jeep philosophies of passion and strength and epitomize the Jeep mantra of “Don’t Hold Back,” Tabart said.
Mark Visser will feature in the latest Jeep Wrangler television commercial, scheduled to air in January 2013.

From the AFL website:
The Tigers spent nine days in far North Queensland, doing team-bonding exercises that included an 'Amazing Race' style competition.
Houli said the camp was tough but gave the Tigers a solid mix of team bonding and hard training.
"The conditions were quite warm and the humidity was very challenging but it was a great balance of the physical aspects and the mental," he said.
"The first four days we trained extremely hard in those conditions through skills and weights and the next four days were the 'Amazing Race' part.
"I was part of the winning team, which was good, and in terms of the physical bit, I was up there. But with all the trivia questions, I was no good.
"It was good to have a balance and it just shows you that team work is very important."
