Cotchin can do it: Houli

IT'S NOT official, but everyone assumes Trent Cotchin is destined to be Richmond's next captain, among them teammate Bachar Houli.
At 22 years old, having played 86 games, many believe Cotchin has been destined for the club's captaincy since he arrived at Punt Road.
He will fill the shoes of Chris Newman - and his approach is expected to be different.
"Trent and Chris Newman are two different leaders," Houli said upon his return for pre-season training.
"Chris is a verbal leader ... but you know on the other hand Trent isn't as vocal but through his actions he's very encouraging and he leads by example.
"Trent isn't the captain yet, but hopefully he gets to captain because I think he's the best for it at this stage."
However Houli insists Cotchin still has learning to do.
"You know he can obviously step up and also develop his skills as well, because we've all got deficiencies," Houli said.
"For him his talent isn't a problem, it's probably more so just speaking up and being a verbal leader on field so I'm really looking forward to seeing him step up and grow as a person."
But Cotchin's likely elevation won't come at the expense of others, as the Tigers' entire leadership strategy evolves.
"You can't rely on five or six leaders. I guess what the coaches are trying to drive forward is a whole group leadership," Houli said.
"I've already seen it in my first session where our coaches are getting our first and second year players to present something."

WTF would Houli know? Wouldn't know which way Mecca was if his beard was on fire
-
On the contrary, I won't be at all surprised to see Bachar elevated to the leadership group this year.

that would make us a laughing stock. Newy is out, get rid of Jackson and add Maric and Foley. Can't have a massive squib in the leadership group. Especially one that had a fairly poor year
-
Massive squib?
-
Yes sir. At least Posty went back with the flight a few times a game

So a bigger squib than Jordy?

Newy may no longer be captain but doesn't mean he wont remain in the leadership group

I saw Houli go a few times this year. Certainly improved in this area particularly over the back half of the year.

Name a captain that steps down and stays in the LG. Let new guy take over and do it his way. LGs are a wank anyway. Bring back the captain, vice-captin and the deputy vice-captain ;D

Jordy put his head over it a few times. Both he & Bachar are very good blokes

Yeah his finish to the season was a lot better than the way he started it. Just need him (and a number of others) to perform consistently next season if we are to play finals.

Imagine he chokes as captain LOL
First year captain blues?

specially when a member of this so called leadership group thinks playing your role is leadership ::)

Which one is that? One of the red sacks surely? Both of them shouldn't be in it. One because he isn't a leader and the other because he can't play and it's embarrassing that he is in our leadership group ;D
-
the red sack that can play.
The one that cant play would probably be smarter than that.

Ivan and Morro should be in the leadership group. Morro's attack on the footy is 'leading by example' at its finest.

:thumbsup

Morro won't go in but I agree. Smart thing to do is put Foley back in, IMO. Good player and was vice captain.

Yep. Would have no problem with Axel back in there. I guess it really wont make a lot of difference either way. The leadership group system is a bit of a wank, as you say. Morro will set the standard for commitment whether he's in the leadership group or not.

Cotchin as captain but with 9 on his back. Captain blood came to me in my dream and said he doesn't want 17 being used on this captain.
