THE AFL has pulled the plug on Carlton superstar Chris Judd's controversial third-party deal with Visy.
In a shock crackdown, the Blues have been told the $250,000-a-year deal can no longer be paid outside the salary cap.
Judd is not alone, with other contentious third-party deals with big names across the league facing unprecedented heat.
From next season, Judd's pay from the Visy ambassadorial role must be included under Total Player Payments or the capped marketing component for Additional Services Agreements.
It was thought Judd's Visy deal was safe outside the cap until at least the end of next year, when his original six-year contract runs out.
But it was reviewed by the league, who informed Carlton and Judd on October 22 that the party was over.
AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson last night confirmed to the Herald Sun that Judd's deal with Visy could no longer be excluded from the salary cap.
"It is not appropriate to release my specific reasons for exercising my discretion in this case to refuse approval for the arrangements to be excluded from Carlton's salary cap," Anderson said.
"My decision is related to a tightening of the rules."

The manager of Carlton captain Chris Judd will fight the AFL's decision not to approve a new third party arrangement between the Brownlow medallist and club sponsor Visy.

Few years too late.
Should never have been allowed by the AFL in the first place. AFL playing catch up on both this and tanking after years denying a problem existed with either case ::).

CARLTON'S fresh bid to have Chris Judd's third-party deal with Visy returned to outside of the AFL salary cap has failed.
A meeting between AFL deputy chief executive Gil McLachlan, league executive Andrew Dillon, Blues chief executive Greg Swann and Judd's manager Paul Connors took place this week.
The Blues and Judd's management were seeking a compromise, but it is understood the AFL was not prepared to overturn its decision to exclude all of Judd's Visy payments - understood to be $200,000 per season - from the club's salary cap.

This. Have been told by a reliable source within the blues that this is in fact the real reason. Mercenary.
