UP to 120 Australian Football League (AFL) players will jet into town on February 5 as part of the AFL Indigenous All-Stars Camp.

The entire Richmond playing squad will be in town on February 6 to join around 80 of the AFL's best Indigenous talent.

AFLNT regional manager Andy Hood said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

``To have all these players here in town is just great for football,'' Hood said.

``It's not going to get any bigger than this.''

Two-time Sydney Swans premiership star Adam Goodes will captain the All-Stars side, which will play the Tigers at Traeger Park on February 8.

Players from both sides will go on a number of community visits in the days before the match.

``There will be a huge super-clinic at Traeger on the Wednesday afternoon so kids and fans will get the opportunity to meet the stars,'' Hood said.

``Anyone who loves footy will understand just how big this is.''

Traeger Park was confirmed the venue for the 2013 biennial event after the 2011 match was cancelled due to Cyclone Yasi.

Richmond to face Indigenous All-Stars in exhibition match in Alice Springs

    Al Paton
    Herald Sun
    December 15, 2012

THE AFL will use the Indigenous All-Stars' clash against Richmond to help clubs improve their understanding of issues facing Aboriginal players.

The Tigers will face the All-Stars in Alice Springs in February.

The match will be followed by the AFLPA Indigenous Player Camp, which brings together all indigenous players on AFL lists.

“In addition to the All-Stars program, we are again inviting key staff from AFL clubs to attend to further develop their capacity and cultural understanding of Indigenous people,” AFL national community engagement manager Jason Mifsud said.

Mifsud has come under fire for his lack of engagement with Indigenous players at junior levels who are may be struggling with the professionalism required to make it in the AFL.

It is the second time the Tigers have scheduled a match against the Indigenous All-Stars and they will be hoping to actually take the field this time.

The two sides were scheduled to play in February this year but the match was moved from Darwin to Alice Springs to dodge tropical storms then abandoned because of severe weather in the red centre.

Next year's match will be played on February 8 at Traeger Park, Alice Springs.

“We are proud to be involved in the Indigenous All-Stars match. It’s important that we celebrate the outstanding contribution the Indigenous community has made to our game and the All-Stars game is a great way to do that," Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said.

The Tigers were already planning to fly to Alice Springs for their community camp.

Stars Jack Riewoldt and Brett Deledio had a distraction from usual tough pre-season training today when they joined players from Big Bash League sides Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes for a hit in the MCG nets.

The Indigenous All-Stars have not played since 2009, when they defeated Adelaide by 54 points.

Indigenous All Stars to play Tigers in Red Centre
ABC Updated December 14, 2012, 3:55 pm

The AFL has confirmed an Indigenous All Stars team will play Richmond at Alice Springs next year.

The match will be staged at Traeger Park in February.

Former Sydney Swans star Michael O'Loughlin will coach the All Stars and will be assisted by Roger Hayden, Troy Cook and Andrew McLeod.

The match will be part of a biennial event and 67 Indigenous AFL players will take part.

AFL Central Australia chief Andy Hood says a football clinic being hosted during the game week will be a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for the region's footballers.

Mr Hood says the game and players camp will provide a boost for football in Central Australia.

"We have actually got about 120 AFL players in Alice Springs from Tuesday right through to Saturday," he said.

"Both the All Stars and the Richmond Tigers have got their community camps in Alice Springs and there's a big super-clinic on the Wednesday.

"I don't think there will be an opportunity like this again.

"To have both these teams for a super clinic on Traeger Park is just amazing."

Tickets for the match are on sale.

Ditto

Amazing how Rendell lost his job over comments that actually appear to have been refelected in Club's drafting this year with the AFL now wanting to have a collective pow-pow about it  :banghead :banghead

Then you throw in the fact that Steven Trigg gets a slap on the wrist by the AFL and no punishment from his board for his rorting of the salary cap and you just can't help but do this  ::) along with this  :banghead :banghead

Of course I have, silly comment.  As Al said, Mifsud's role in the Rendall saga wasn't a stuff up, it was a testament to his character and I don't particularly like that character.  And if it was a stuff up then he should have had sufficient strength of character to apologise to Rendell, not hang him out to dry to protect his own arse.  Grubby.

Personally, unless you have a source to back up any of what has been posted - none of this is anything other than speculation Smokes.
How do you know whether he apologised or not?
He certainly isn't beholden to the public to apologise - just Rendell.

Making a mistake doesn't necessarily constitute a "testimony to ones character" it might be a cock up.
Either way, he's learnt his lesson because we haven't heard boo from him since.

The way the media handled the story was the real testimony to character - 1st they lynch Rendell and them they turn on Midsud!
Cretins.
And to think people fall for any of it!

a week after rendall had stood down/been sacked misfud did an interview for the mangarook footy show. early on he said he felt uncomfortable in the meeting ( with rendell) and that he always stood against racial stereotyping.

yet how did he handle it at the time. did he discuss it with rendell, someone he regarded as a friend up that point?
no said nothing to his face but ran off to the media behind his back. He even even said in this interview that he was unsure whether rendell was still a friend of his.

so a week later, after carefull consideration he still had not changed his tune, so why would we think anything changed since then.

even if he has, In such a high profile public shipstorm, if you came to the conclusion you were wrong, then any admission/ apology should also be public, after all he took the original private conversation public.

grubby turd.

A bad week ...try a bad month. Original private conversation with Rendall happened in Jan and he went to public about said private conversation more than a month later in newspaper interview no less, that was when the AFL found out about it. If Mifsud was so offended by what was said why didn't he do something straight away?

Matt Rendell was judged & executed by being booted out of his job because he voiced an opinion/concern to a friend - one bad day. Mifsud's punishment was being protected for his stupidity and questionable ethics by the AFL and Andy D (he made an error of judgement said Andy D)

Let's not forget he (Mifsus) had another "bad week" with that the fiasco at Melb and the "alledged" way indigenous players were being treated differently

Sorry but I agree with al

All of these links are a sample of what Google threw up so even though I don't have my own source and even though I have a very very healthy distrust of the media, there is too much of a common thread throughout this whole issue/period for a fair whack of it not to be accurate.

Mifsud was the one who made it public initially (then repeated this method of 'judgment call' on an unrelated matter a few weeks later), not Rendell, so if he felt an apology was necessary then he had no alternative but to apologise publicly - anything less is grubby.  I'm sure you wouldn't be happy with being publicly 'outed' about something you said in a private meeting, or that was inaccurate or misinterpreted but only being apologised to in private after publicly losing your job and your credibility in the industry that employs you.

IF he made a mistake...then making the mistake was not the testimony to Mifsud's character - his inability to publicly address the public mistake he made was.

Learned his lesson or crapped himself because his well paid job is suddenly on the line and has crawled back under the rock he appeared from?  I don't know the guy but I recognise the signs and the signs say to me "grubby".

But I do agree with you about the media and their role.  FWIW, I reckon they got a sniff, saw a weak member of the herd (Mifsud) and went for the kill.  He was just a weak grub who fed them.

i get the impression you have some connection to misfud Y&B.

I don't and in fact felt the same way as yourselves at the time - upon reflection what disturbed me about the whole story was he fact he has basically been clean of trouble pre and post "Rendell-gate" has largely been a positive in his role so I kinda got the feeling he got lynched in the media a little and then just stuffed up on Marngrook in that interview.
I truly believe he has probably apologised in private to Rendell but was told by his employer to get a low profile until the dust settled which is why it wasn't public.
So the words "silly", "ill advised" and perhaps "naive" spring to mind but I reckon grubby is unfair.
The AFL employs him and that wage pays his family bills - he's just done what he has Ben told., Rendell gets "sacked" by Adelaide and then surprise surprise Rendell gets another job a few months later.
If anything is grubby it is the AFL leadership of the whole saga.
They complicated the issue and it snowballed unnecessarily.

From the Age 20th March 2012

"Rendell said he had made the comment when Mifsud made an unannounced visit to Adelaide in January."

Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/sorry-rendell-im-not-racist-20120319-1vg7l.html#ixzz2IIveKpL1

Rendell was sacked in March not January.

Quote

You cannot pin the Melbourne fiasco on Mifsud, he reporting what a player told him

As for the Melb situation, a similar scenario, he was told something in confidence by a player and then went and spoke to someone else about it.

From MMM Footy:

"An AFL official has been forced to apologise and given a warning by the league after he told columnist Grant Thomas scurrilous information about Melbourne coach Mark Neeld that ended up in an online blog.

Mifsud came clean at an AFL media conference on Tuesday afternoon, where he revealed he told Thomas Neeld treated his indigenous players differently to their non-indigenous teammates.

The Community Engagement officer issued an unreserved apology to Neeld, who refuted the claims made in Thomas' blog on Fox Footy's On The Couch on Monday night."

Full Article: http://www.triplem.com.au/brisbane/sport/afl/news/jason-mifsud-apologises-to-mark-neeld/

Mifsud also had to apologies to Aaron Davey after mediation

"AFL official Jason Mifsud and Melbourne player Aaron Davey have met to discuss the events that led to columnist Grant Thomas publishing false information about the Demons and their coach Mark Neeld in a blog, with Mifsud saying he will continue his role with the league.

Thomas wrote that Neeld had one on ones with his white players but spoke to Aboriginal players in a group, comments the new coach was upset by and had his club complain to the AFL about.

He also phoned Thomas directly and had the comments retracted.

Mifsud, who was issued a warning by the AFL for leaking the wrong information which he apparently believed came from a conversation he had with Davey, has said sorry to the Demons' star.
"

As I said it's his ethics I have a problem with. If what was said in January 2012 was so offensive why did it take unitl March for it to come to light when he gave an interview with the Age? Why didn't he march straight into headquarters and do something? Better yet why didn't he say something to Rendell when it was first said  :-\

Regarding the Melb thing what the hell was he doing talking to Grant thomas about it?

Stupidity, poor mistake, naive, call it what you like but he had got off very lightly. It was unprofessional and as I said shows questionable ethics at best.

And to think now the AFL wants to have a pow-pow with the clubs run by Mifsud on the very issue that Rendell raised in the original conversation because there was a low number of indigenouse players drafted this year just beggars belief

If anything is grubby it is the AFL leadership of the whole saga.
They complicated the issue and it snowballed unnecessarily.

On this point we agree, the AFL showed no leadership that's the problem

after the rendell fiasco, no one will will want to talk about the real reasons as why young indigenous people are not being drafted, let alone to Misfud.

The real losers in this will be the exact people Misfud is paid to help, and as I've said before, the game will be poorer for it.

The attacks on the AFL executive on this site are an absolute disgrace, cowardly and gutless. Demetriou is the best CEO this code has ever had. You should all be acknowledging the greatness of the Greek Cypriot. If it wasnt for him this code would be rooted IMHO.

No thanks, he can rack off to Greece and bail them out :D

RFCO was asked again today on twitter and he's still awaiting to find out.

I hope it's on NITV as then it'll be on free-to-air TV. They've been showing the NSW indigenous rugby league tournament over summer so they do show indigenous related sport.

We'll probably find out whether the game will be shown on Fox Footy by Saturday.

Richmond training times in Alice Springs:

Wednesday 6th, from 6.30 to 7.30 pm
Thursday 7th, from  6.00 to 6.45 pm

Especially if it remains 30+ degrees in the Alice. Based on last Friday's training I don't think Jack, Lids, Jacko or Conca will be playing. I wouldn't risk Cotch or Maric either. Newy as our oldest I can't see playing. Obviously Foley, Grimes, Kingy and Chaplin will be unavailable. Lonergan didn't train on Friday either.

My guess:

Perhaps we'll be using the game as a proper practice match hit-up. Hard to do that if you're needing to watch your tackles because a teammate is playing for the other side. I'm guessing also that as Richmond pays Titch's salary the Club would be the one liable to pay for any treatment if an injury were to occur (touchwood everyone gets through the match unscathed). He's a Tiger so if we are involved in a game he plays for us.

Disappointing for our sponsors as well.

Agree!!! Surely Fox Footy would televise the match???
You would think so but nope. Melbourne vs Port Adelaide from round 17 last year is more important  :huh  :P.

My guess:
B:    Morris       Rance       Astbury
HB:   Houli       Griffiths       Dea
C:     Grigg       Martin      Batchelor
HF: Petterd      A.Edwards  S.Edwards
F:   Nahas        Vickery      Elton
R:  Stephenson   Tuck      Ellis
Int (from): Derickx, Vlastuin, McGuane, White, O'Hanlon, Helbig, Verrier, Darrou, Williams, McIntosh, McBean, McDonough

No room for Arnott MT?

Would think he will play
Oops forgot to answer your question WP. I'm not 100% sure Arnot is in full training yet based on the Pakenham training session. So that's why I left him out of my team guestimate. He may be training fully now so yes I would include him if he's 100% right.

ps. I hope I don't mozz him but keep an eye on McDonough in the preseason games (in a forward pocket).

Tiger fans will get their first look at forwards Chris Knights (Adelaide), Aaron Edwards (North Melbourne) and rookie-listed ruckman Orren Stephenson (Geelong) in the Alice Springs clash.

Vlastuin, 18, made an immediate impact at Punt Rd with the competitive beast poised for an early-season debut, most likely on a half-back flank.

Defender Steve Morris recently praised Morris's attitude and said Tiger fans would quickly fall in love with the Brad Sewell type.

Draftees Matthew McDonough, Kamdyn McIntosh and Cadeyn Williams have also been picked.

Knights, 26, crossed to the Tigers as a free agent, while Edwards was acquired in the trade period.

Star midfielder Trent Cotchin will make his debut as captain against the Lance Franklin-led All-Stars.

The match will be played at Traegar Park at 8.30pm AEDT and will be aired on television network NTIV."

Tigers clawing back Edwards

    Caroline Wilson
    The Age
    February 6, 2013

RICHMOND'S Shane Edwards has been embroiled in a tug-of-war between the Tigers and the indigenous All-Stars team in the lead-up to Friday's exhibition game in Alice Springs.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick and the All-Stars' Michael O'Loughlin both want Edwards, and the indigenous team's management had hoped to persuade the 24-year-old to play with the All-Stars in the days leading up to the game.

However Hardwick had made it clear he wanted Edwards in the Tigers' team given the club is treating the game as a crucial platform in its 2013 season preparation.

With captain Lance Franklin the latest and largest in a list of withdrawals from the All-Stars, O'Loughlin had made his wishes known even before the loss of his indigenous skipper.

''We want him in the side,'' O'Loughlin said of Edwards. ''Obviously we'd love him to play with us and I can understand it's a bit awkward for him because we are playing against Richmond, which is his side, but in the end it's up to him. I'm planning on talking to him again later.''

The All-Stars game has traditionally been fraught with political issues. Last year the match was cancelled after dangerous weather in Alice Springs led to the AFL stopping the Tigers from flying out of Melbourne. But even before the cancellation O'Loughlin and Adam Goodes had been unhappy with the Tigers for leaving out a number of big names from the squad.

Goodes, Cyril Rioli and Shaun Burgoyne had already withdrawn from the 2013 team before the loss of Franklin, whose selection and captaincy had been the subject of some strong behind-the-scenes lobbying and something of a coup for the AFL and the concept of the All-Stars.

Edwards, who told Fairfax Media last year he strongly identified with his indigenous heritage despite not being named as indigenous in AFL records in his early years, was to spend the week in the All-Stars' training camp.

In the past indigenous footballers representing the opposition have been known to push to play for the All-Stars although Essendon's indigenous players played for the Bombers in their last All-Stars clash.

While Edwards might have been torn, he assured the Tigers he would play for Richmond on Friday. ''We sent in our squads to the AFL last week and he was on our list,'' said Richmond's football boss Craig Cameron. ''He told Damien he wanted to play for Richmond. He's a Richmond player.''

This is exactly the reason why the State of Origin concept folded - club pressure on the star players to not risk injury. With the sudden 'injury-concerns' to all the Hawks top lined Indigenous players (Franklin, Rioli & Burgoune) plus Goodes with more to follow, how can this game gain credibility to the football public.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy they can not play because it gives our team a more even contest on the night. If all the best Indigenous star did play and play at their best, I don't believe there would be many teams that could realistically challenge them.

During these preseason trial games, everyone always holds their collective breath in case of injury. It will be the same on Friday night for me.

Tigers value All Stars game
By richmondfc.com.au
Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Experienced Richmond midfielder Daniel Jackson believes Friday night’s clash with the Indigenous All Stars in Alice Springs will provide the Tigers with important preparation in the lead-up to the 2013 premiership season.

“We know they are going to be a very dynamic and skilful and energetic side, so we’ll have to counter that,” Jackson said.

“But it will be more like putting in all the things we’ve been practising over summer and seeing how they go, and building on that throughout the NAB Cup series, so we’re ready to go come season 2013.

What difference is an injury in a pre season game to a  season proper game? after all an injury is an injury.

Unless you believe you can front up to round 1 without any match practice, you shouldn't worry yourself over it. It's basically a practice match and the preparation for the season is as much a part of football as the season itself.

Nothing wrong with spreading our brand nationally and increasing our membership right across Australia. The NAB Cup is just over two weeks away so not long to wait until we see some footy live. We'll mostly see close to our full list play over the two mini NAB Cup matches anyway rather than this allstars game where many of our best players are missing.

I agree with Ramps, the club should be training at Punt Rd to allow supporters like Ramps to bag the club and not attend training but complain we are not doing enough to create a national presence.

I'll be interviewing Brisbane Lions 3 time premiership player and Indigenous All-Stars coaching staff member Chris Johnson on the Sports Talk radio show on 90.7 SYN FM at around 9:10 this morning. Tune in! We'll be talking about all sorts of sports from 9-10. You can text in as well, if you want to contribute to the discussion.

finally some sense at Punt Road now if we can just get another 6 or 7 of our top players to pull out just before the bounce it would have been a successful journey.
