Richmond is holding a special opening training session on Australia Day Eve in Pakenham, at Toomuc Recreation Reserve.

On Friday, January 25, the entire squad, including Richmond stars Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Brett Deledio, Ivan Maric and local player Chris Newman, will travel to Pakenham for the training session.

A range of activities, including a kids’ clinic, will also take place, as part of the Tigers’ visit.

Richmond is aware of its large fan and member base in the Cardinia region, and the training session is a way for the Club to say ‘thank you’ for the local support.

“The players are looking forward to meeting some of the Club’s members and supporters in Pakenham and the wider Cardinia area,” said Richmond’s CEO Brendon Gale.

“The Club understands how exciting it is for more regional communities to have an AFL club in town, so we’re very happy to be able to able to make this visit possible.”

The kids’ football clinic will commence at 2.30pm, and the players will arrive at 4pm to begin their training session. Food supplied by local sporting clubs will also be available to purchase on the day.

There will be opportunities for fans to have photos and autographs with players after the training session has concluded.

Toomuc Recreation Reserve is located on the Princes Highway in Pakenham,

No guarantees but I'm hoping to get to this. By Jan you need a footy fix :yep. Pakenham isn't close but it's a lot easier to get to than Craigieburn with a direct freeway to there.

I went today and I'll write-up a training report later on and post some pics.

The Pakenham ground is pretty good size for a suburban ground and in good nick. You could also buy food and drink there so the local club did a rip roaring trade. The ground is easy to get to as well with the turn off off the Princess Fwy at Cardinia Road and there's plenty of parking. The only similarities with Craigieburn is it was windy as hell outside the ground and it actually got fairly cold towards the end.

Crowd wise I would reckon there were a couple of thousand. With the kids clinic beforehand there were a stack of youngsters most with Richmond jumpers on. The '9' on the back was the clear favourite. The players went around the ground after training to sign autographs so no one missed out. The membership tent looked busy (I picked up my cap) and I saw about 5 people sign up so hopefully the tally gets another boost.

All in all a successful day for the Club even if the training was fairly standard stuff.

What's going on to the right of the picture?!   :o

Practicing a common NRL play - "The Hopoate".  Untried so far in the AFL as sceptics fail to see the possibilities but the new ground-breaking mentality at Richmond knows no bounds and the introduction of this radical play is being trialled and tested during pre-season and the NAB Cup.

As Bengal said it was windy. Most of the shots I saw missed were from distance too (+40m). I'll say more when I get a chance to do a more detailed write-up. Jack did give Whitey a clearly audible spray "what a dumb kick" in mid-flight that went to the forward pocket but that was meant to be a pass not a kick for goal.
