Some images of the Richmond area around 1885:

The Richmond railway line has been photographed from a northern direction; the railway gates (at Punt Rd) are closed, and a horse and carriage are waiting behind them beside the signal box. The signal box was opened in 1882.
The Richmond Football Ground is in the background behind the signal box.

The photograph shows Swan St and the Swan St shops from a western angle, closed railway gates with horses and carriages on either side, a signal box, and railway lines running to the east and south. According to the information accompanying the image: 'About 1884. The Swan St. railway crossing. J. Sanderson's building is still standing. The line on the right went to the Cremorne Gardens. It is now the Sandringham line. The old post office stands next to Sanderson's building, on the site occupied by the signal box. In the 1850's, before the railway line was completed, there was a temporary station known as Punt Rd. station, on the Melbourne side of Hoddle St. The new Richmond station was known for a while as Punt Rd. station even after the site was moved.'

In 1885 the railway bridge now over Swan St was built ...

'Here is the first cable tram to run in Melbourne; it is about to leave Richmond Town Hall for the city, on 11 November 1885.
