Mmm, don't think I would be taking our guns there, unreal isn't it, as much as people say the NAB cup is not important a loss could actually have serious consequences for loosing teams that have to play on second rate ovals. If this oval is second rate.
-
I have no idea on the quality though I would speculate its no MCG
I think the Injectors will do what they can to win given they need to make up for letting down the people of wangaratta last year.
-
It doesn't look that bad, but thats judging from the picture. I suspect they've all played on much worse grounds many times. O'Hanlons home ground was "unplayable on" as practically the whole centre square used to be mud, but since we were going through drought it was seriously as hard as concrete.

Um, not so sure that is the ground. There are two grounds in Wang, one beside the other. That looks like WJ Findlay Oval, the showgrounds is Norm Minns Oval, which is in a lot better nick.

Absolutely correct.
The oval shown is the Wangaratta Rovers ground.
The Wangaratta Magpies ground is the Norm Minns oval and is below (ie across the road) the oval shown on the google pic.
You can just see the oval's blue boundary fence at the bottom left corner.
The access road is shown at the bottom.
On the map you will go under the rail line at c314, turn right at the roundabout as shown and will be facing the oval when you turn to the left onto the Yarrawonga road.
You need to immediately turn right onto the road between the two ovals.
Car access to the Norm Minns oval is usually via a gate about centre bottom of the picture.

Our win/loss record has nothing to do with where we play for weeks 2 and 3 of the NAB Cup. This was all put in places months ago.

All of our NAB Cup games are televised.

I can assure everyone that the ground is perfect for AFL football. The picture posted by OE is the oval next door. Norm Minns Oval has had plenty spent on it over the last few years to not only get these games but to also be the headquarters for the Murray Bushies. I was there for the Essendone no show last year and St Kilda played an intra club game on it despite it having inches of rain on it in the previous 24 hours.
-
im surprised that these country teams can field a team by the end of the season. the attrition rate dues to injury from playing on these second rate ovals must be huge ::)

You're right GR12. Sorry the site I looked up wrongly had the Findlay Oval as the one. I've fixed my first post.
This is a pic of the Showgrounds (Norm Minns) Oval. Definitely in better condition than the one next door.

i can also assure you that WJ Findlay Oval is a great surface also, both for footy and cricket. Not sure what the go is with the patchy grass but it still looks better than the Gabba did a season or two ago. WJ Findlay is the ground where Barry Hall's former team (Wang Rovers) plays. I watched the Fev versus Baz game there last year and it was perfect.

Love the Bitumen road around the ground. Boys on the bench will have to watch out when warming up. Hope the club has someone to yell "Car!" like we did when I was a kid playing kick to kick on the road.

I have umpired on both grounds and they are great surfaces, but the Wang Magpies facilities are a bit better.
-
These pictures of both grounds are at least 3 years old so both grounds would have changed a fair bit in that time id say. Probably alot better now than the story these pictures tell.
-
Essendon are taking virtually a full strength squad up to Wangaratta. Only Zaharakis and Melksham won't play.

Match preview: Essendon v Richmond
By Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
February 26, 2013
WHERE AND WHEN
Norm Minns Oval, Wangaratta, Saturday, March 2, 5.10pm
MISSING
Essendon: David Zaharakis (quad), Jake Melksham (hand) and Jason Winderlich (groin) seem to be the three main Bombers set to miss the clash.
Richmond: Nathan Foley (Achilles) will miss but the Tigers could welcome Jake King back after five off-season surgeries. Troy Chaplin, Sam Lonergan and Dylan Grimes are all a chance to face the Bombers but could be held to play against Hawthorn in the third week of the NAB Cup.
LAST WEEK
Essendon: After two weeks of intense media scrutiny, the Bombers opened the NAB Cup with a win against the Western Bulldogs before a tight loss to Collingwood. However, there were plenty of signs the team would be better in 2013 that in 2012. Tom Bellchambers looked good in the ruck, Brendon Goddard made an immediate impact at his new club, and Dustin Fletcher was as resolute as ever in defence.
Richmond: The Tigers kick-started their 2013 campaign with a 15-point win over Melbourne but then, in similar fashion to several games last year, lost a tight contest against North Melbourne by four points. Nevertheless, Richmond showed it has the firepower to match it with any side in the competition this season, and the forward partnership of Jack Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery will be crucial to that.
WHAT THEY SAY
Essendon: "I am really looking forward to getting into the midfield this week and having a good run around. After missing last week against Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs it has made pre-season just a little bit longer for me, so I can’t wait to get out there. That match fitness is really important for us especially in terms of learning and playing to our game plan." - Essendon midfielder Ben Howlett
Richmond: "The team went really well, and we're looking to build from that and bring some good form into the season, and get some wins on the board. We didn't have our full 100 per cent team out there [on Friday night], but the way we went about it was good. Now we're looking to build on that." - Richmond midfielder Reece Conca
WE SAY
Essendon:
Given Essendon's home and away season starts a week earlier than most clubs (against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on March 22), the club will be keen to get its most competitive outfit together as quickly as possible. With a few important players returning for this clash, including Jobe Watson, Howlett and possible debutant Joe Daniher, the Bombers should field a strong line-up.
Richmond:
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admitted it would have been nice to beat the Kangaroos last week, but the Tigers will be better for the run and will have a more experience team against the Bombers. The Tigers' tenacity and ball movement is exciting and we'll get another glimpse into how the club's band of mature recruits will slot into the best 22.

No Chaplin ?
-
Changes from last week:
Out: Lids, Cotch, Knights, Maric, Conca, Morris, Derickx, Elton, Darrou
In: King, Stephenson
-
No Chaplin ?
Looks like he'll play against Hawthorn now.
-
Good to see King in
-
Hoping Arnot gets a full four quarters. Was a shame he got injured last year. Will be good to see how far he has come. If he's got the skill it will be great to have another hard head in the team every week.

That's if Essendon shows up. Wang is a long way away for them .
-
Disappointed that Cotch, Lids and Ivan are not playing. I finally have a Tigers game in my area and three guns are rested. I hope the club is not taking the bush for granted there are plenty of exisiting and potential members up here. Or maybe it is the second rate country grounds :)
-
We're following the same NAB Cup preparation as last year. In round 2 last year, we sent a B-side over to play Freo which was competitive for 3.5 qtrs before being run over.
If Essendon don't beat us by 6 goals plus on Saturday then it'll be a poor reflection on them as they will be at full strength. We'll need our second string mids to stand up and for the Big O and TV to match Ryder, Hille and Bellchambers for us to beat them.

I hope bombres guns suffer immense anal pain from their festivities the night before :shh

Did Elton play last week, sheesh he was quiet :lol
-
results are of no concern in the NAB Cup,, take note AFL bosses... AND commentators, was so funny last week when David King says during the last qtr that it was time for the Tigers leadership to stand up and not lose the game, before the camera pans to the interchange and Lids and Cotch have their boots off and having a laugh. Martin is sitting and Newman walks past as well.
-
Interesting that Knights isn't playing.
When will Grimes return?
Glad they are resting Cotchin, Deledio, Maric.
Derrickx should be playing.
Reiwoldt, Vickery and A Edwards playing is interesting too. Maybe trying to "solve" the forward efficiency problem. Would rest Reiwoldt.
My NAB Cup Round 2 v Essendon
Dea, Rance, Vlastuin
Batchelor, Astbury, Ellis
Verrier, Grigg, Newman
King, Griffiths, O'Hanlon
A.Edwards, Vickery, S.Edwards
Stephenson, Arnot, Jackson

McGuane - FF.
McDonough - FP.
Petterd - HF, HB.
White - Midfield-Tagging.
Nahas - FP.
Tuck - HF, Midfield.
Leave Out:
Riewoldt, Martin, Houli

Yeah but the media loves James and Essendon bar Patrick and Caro.
Even if we won by 100 points the consensus would be Essendon were trialling and Richmond were wasteful beyond any logic.

Derrickx should be playing.
For Gimps22. Should never play for this club again at any level.
-
I think they are trying to get the structures right and allow the three forwards time to get used to each other. A Edwards in particular will need to find his niche. It always allow the midfielders another opportunity to start to get used to the forward leading patterns and where to deliver to each. I hope we start to use Vickery and Edwards more this season rather than send it straight to Jack and his multitude of defenders.

Article from the border mail today....
http://www.bordermail.com.au/story/1336449/richmond-has-no-excuses/?cs=10
Richmond has ‘no excuses’ March 1, 2013, 11 p.m.
RICHMOND midfielder Daniel Jackson says the Tigers have run out of excuses.
He admitted it was time they met expectation, starting tonight with a strong showing in the sold-out NAB Cup blockbuster against Essendon at Norm Minns Oval.
The Tigers arrived in the North East late yesterday and were swamped by fans after a light training run.
And Jackson, who is about to enter his 10th season in the AFL, said the club was embracing, not hiding, from the high hopes being placed on the group from those supporters.
Richmond last played finals in 2001.
“We really don’t have any more excuses,” Jackson said.
“Our group’s not as young as it was and we’ve got a lot more experience.
“We played some good footy last year but had little lapses in games that ended up being really close and didn’t fall our way.
“We expect to win those games this year and, if we do that, who knows what we can do?”
Jackson said the Tigers had shown they could match it with the AFL’s elite and were expecting to do the same this season.
“The group’s been training really well and we’re really excited about having a good year,” he said.
“We showed last year we can beat some of the best sides and we’re expecting to do the same this year.
“We’ve known since ‘Dimma’ (coach Damian Hardwick) walked in the door that it was going to be a long journey but we’ve really started to take steps along that now.”
He said the club shared the optimism of its long-starved supporter base.
“Richmond supporters are very faithful and have been through some tough times,” Jackson said.
“They’ve waited a long time and are expecting a lot but so are we.”
Meanwhile, the Players’ Association delegate again defended the integrity of the sport in the wake of the drugs saga.
“We just do what we do,” Jackson said.
“We’re always going to train hard and play hard.
“The whole AFL playing group know there’s a lot of integrity in the game.
“Blokes don’t go out there to cheat on performance.
“They go out there to do the hard work.
“That’s how we go about it, that’s the attitude, that’s culture of the AFL and it’s something we’re really proud of.
“I think we’ll find going forward that’s exactly what’s proven.”
Jackson said he was impressed by the facilities at Norm Minns Oval and was thrilled to get out of Melbourne.

Life membership for Whacko Jacko this year. Done well to achieve that given his limited ability and I'm not sure he would have been able to at most other clubs.

Seriously, the luckiest bloke to ever pull on the Tiger Jumper....bar McGoof. Still, he loves the Club and is an exemplary representative off-field and a good bloke to boot.

You'd expect a solid performance from "Lockup" in the VFL, its his niche.

I thought they said it was a light breeze. Enough to cool off the players, but not enough to influence the flight of the ball.

Defensive structures holding up well. Need to make them pay on the scoreboard though!
-
Credit to the Big O, he's looked ok.
-
It looked like Essendon had a patch in the middle of the qtr where they had our defence under seige but we stood up. The rest of the quarter was controlled by us. Last 4 shots were for 3 points and 1 OOTF. We've still got to learn to make the most of our scoring chances.
Big O has 7 possies :o
Tigga (5 in50s), Dusty and Houli with 6 disposals.

-
We were in control and on top in the first 15 mins of that second quarter but couldn't put it on the scoreboard kicking 2.5 :banghead. The Bombers got one against the run of play and then put their best 4 (Ryder, Watson, Stanton and Goddard) into the centre against our experimenting "F-team" and went bang-bang-bang.
Our field kicking has improved significantly over recent years but our goalkicking or should that be point-kicking is getting beyond a joke now even if it is just a preseason game. You work so hard to dominate general play but then continually keep the opposition in the game by wasting opportunities. As they say back (goal)kicking is bad footy.

We visibly settled the game down about 7mins left. Essendon had massive momentum and we just started playing keepers off and lateral play. Until the game settled down and we kicked two. Haven't seen us do that before, maybe a Choco trick?

I am very pleased with this win. To have so many of our top players out and still get the win is outstanding. 4. we had to kick out with the sun in our eyes within 6 seconds
:lol :lol :lol
:lol
According to BigFoolery, "you could tell we didn't want to play the NAB cup GF by the way we jogged to contests."
-
I am very pleased with this win. To have so many of our top players out and still get the win is outstanding. I dont know what percentage chance I gave the bummers of winning a flag in the next 10 years but it should have been O. They are no chance. They are a rabble. I'm going to look forward to reading some bomberblitz tonight. Its gonna be hilarious in there.

They are in denial. They are a rabble. Some of their players look half the size they were last year lol. Big Fitness campaign supposed at Windy Hill this year lol.
"1. It was preseason.
2. It was 30 degrees

5. Foreign ground. Upsets always happen. "

At home BBQing with wife and daughter in law (both bomber supporters).
Who did we have missing, so I can tell them how bad the loss was.
:lol
-
One reason we won, fitter, much fitter!
-
At least we get that media crap about us not winning the close ones off our back.
And start to shift all sorts of heat to the pin cushions. :gotigers
Smoke, our mate Petts.......promote!
Based on his late goal or his game in general WAT? I could only listen to a crap call so I wasn't able to get a 'real' idea of how he went.
He went well mate, most of the game, will be elevated!
Cheers mate, good news. Depth = finals!
-

Could it be a result of the collective 'withdrawal' they have experienced lately....... ;)

:lol
For starters, our best 3:
Maric
Cotchin
Deledio
then you can ring off a bunch of starters/likely starters
Morris
Conca
Chaplin
Grimes
Foley
Knights
A. Edwards (?? maybe for arguments sake)
Half a game:
S. Edwards
Martin
Newman
King
Ellis
probably missed someone lol

Yep, could be a real key, nailed it down back, had a crack in the centre, then got that goal, could become another Tuck type utility, signs are good!

:lol
For the full game - no Cotch, Lids, Maric, Chaplin, Grimes, Foley and Conca.
First half - no Ellis, King.
Second half - no Newy, Martin.
Jack was well held too so we won without needing him to kick a few.
Add to that we had 30 scoring shots to their 20.

Sometimes you disappoint me greatly. First why did you marry an Essendon supporter, second your son should have been ordered by you to marry a Richmond girl or convert the infidel. What happens when your son has kids? Who are they gonna barrack for. Its a disgrace. You should be incharge of your family. Its about time you took substantive action to correct these mistakes ;D

Gets better Dwaino:
"Im sorry...but most of you; are insane.
We played awful, awful football and still managed to lose in the last 90 seconds.
If things had gone a fraction different we would be sitting undefeated...we should of beaten collingwood and should have won today.
The intensity was never there today...Richond came out far more agressive, we were literally going through the motions. This wont happen come round 1."
:lol :lol :lol Roll on the gobsmacking moment when they realise they are truly crap!

the fruitcakes telling everyone else in their that they are insane. Ive just read the last 6 pages in their. Its gonna be a great laugh. Need to crack a cold beer or two and enjoy whats going on in their.

There is another around that post somewhere about how crap their midfield coaches must be and how impressive our set ups are :rollin
But on a more serious note, the fact our B team could beat a full strength side is that we finally have a little bit of depth, and the coaching in that we don't have to rely on the talent alone of our top end.
-
^^ we weren't on drugs ^^
-
Just got back from the game, sorry Nollsy, couldnt hang around any longer.
My thoughts:
Ground in superb nick
It was like a Tigers home game, heaps of support up here for the RFC
Big O is clearly ahead of Vicks and Derrickx in the ruck stakes. I thought Big O was great at getting centre clearances but was not so great at around the ground stoppages
Dusty was great
Rance was BOG
To win without three of our best centre square players is full of merit
Essendon are in deep poo
Wang maggies ground can't cater for anymore than 11, 000 crowd, thats why Lavington will always hold the O & M granny.

They put on a good comedy skit together out on the wing culminating with Jacko kicking it out on the full

Beating a virtually full strength Essendon with 8 of our best 24 nt there and 4 playing just one half is great.
Bombers are not much chop. Free agency is about finding what you need snd filling that not finding a superstar for the sake of it.
Goddard will lay a role and that's it. Anyway enough of the Bummers.
Rance for me was BOG.
Loved Edwards game and his tackling.
Vlaustin will be a gun.
McGuane pleasantly surprised me and.
We may have found a depth ruckman while McBean develops. Big O was great against Ryder, Halia and Bellhalia.
Tuck was solid.
Petterd may have found a role but if he goes for that on the young Bomber kid in the first this game has deteriorated into a joke.
Depth is finally there and add the influence of Chocco on top and we may have something real worthwhile that will be sustainable.
Second and third tier were great.
I watched the last quarter in full and the number of errors Jako made were enough to ensure with this depth that surely the coaches know he is not a top 24 player at the club but just an average ressies player at best. Too many past him now, no excuse to play him.
My concerns are in our appearances so far we have kick 19.36 which will be okay t get us over the line against minnows like Melbourne and Essendon ;D,
but the better sides will punish us.
Need to get that killer instinct and nail those 25-50 metre goals consistently. Arnot missed some sitters in the last. Vickery should have kicked two also. Would have made the result more clear cut and not given the opposition or anyone in the media an opportunity to give the Bombers an excuse on why they lost or a sideswipe on us.
All in all a good day and things are building nicely for us with legitimate claims for sustained on field success.
On a side dish would love to see Jimmy Hird and co fall on their sword and him being the first coach to bite the dust this year. For poor on field performance. :bee
Just in Essendon's new membership campaign " Our skata stinks too". :yep
-
rance was not bog... he nearly shanked every lick.. missed targets took wrong options and cost us many goals. rance was hopeless . a few good marks does not mean jack poo petterd was great as was, tuck.but rance mguane Jackson white and nahas were crap
-

McGaune= more effective than Jack
Jacko= thought we were stuffed when when Dusty was subbed but held his own
Rance= what does he have to do to keep people pleased? Was easily our best defender and the defence held us up all night. If rances disposal was crap it was because he got sold ' referred pressure' handballs often.
Nahas= good first quarter, not sighted for two but had an impact in the last.
Agree though, Petterd was good as was Tuck. If Dusty was not subbed he would have been BOG.

Can't remember which Essenbum forum it was, but someone commented "typical Martin trying to shove a pill down someone's throat." All I wanted to do was register and reply "typical Essendon pretending they didn't know what was going on."

this degree of unprofessionalism is consistently comical

They have the 3rd up but not the 4th. Same with the Melb/North thing to they have the first "3 quarters" but not the 4th

They're still trying to find an excuse. :lol
Hirdy stated MORE than thrice in the lead up that we WOULDN"T make the NAB GF, even though Commentators & such said many times a win COULD see us make it. & I think even before the tri game he said we wouldn't or didn't want to. Read between the lines folks.
To ensure we didn't, he, as the Masters (sheeds) apprentice knows how to engineer a loss. How? Train the players into the ground leading up to the game - take 'em up 3 days early, away from all routine - play them out of possie, put players who are underdone in for their first full run and experiment all manner of stuff. Where do you think Dean Bailey learnt how to do it?
So I think we might be seeing it as a positive that with all that going on we still were in front against both the woods & tiges with less than 5 to go & had to really try to lose. If you watch the last five of the C wood game with this in mind you can see it.
-

yes they should be proud they nearly beat the tigers B team lol

Hird now saying they were "experimenting" in the last few minutes of the game
LMAO what a clown
-
Experimenting with what? He makes it sound like the game was even and they chucked it. If we didn't kick so woefully we would have blown them out of the water.
dw guys, juz expermenting not being abl 2 brake a reservs teams press and we wuz missing all our frinj playurz.
