Old Tigers, new stripes

ELEVATED Richmond rookies Ricky Petterd and Orren Stephenson could make their club debuts as early as next Thursday night, Tigers skipper Trent Cotchin believes.
The two mature-aged recruits were promoted under the nominated rookie rule on Tuesday, making them eligible for senior selection.
Cotchin says the former Melbourne forward-turned-defender and the ex-Geelong ruckman are in line for a call up to face Carlton in their season opener on March 28.
"They've both played some really good footy over the pre-season and they've trained really well and almost haven't missed a beat, so I'm sure that will come into its own next week when the side is put out," Cotchin told AFL.com.au on Tuesday.
"Big O has been fantastic; he's going to be there as a support for big Ivan Maric, and Ricky has come into the side and played a defensive role for us.
"I think it's a fresh start for him and he's pretty excited about it, and hopefully both get an opportunity pretty early on in the season."
The nominated rookie rule sees clubs with fewer than 40 primary-listed players able to elevate a rookie before Tuesday's 2pm deadline.
The Tigers only have 38 on their list, meaning they had the option of promoting two players.
Former Essendon midfielder Sam Lonergan was believed to be in the frame but missed out in favour of the reborn half back and the big man.
Petterd, 24, first impressed as a defender in an intra-club match at Punt Road in February, before going on to play four games in the NAB Cup series.
The ex-Demon played 54 games for Melbourne between 2007 and 2012.
Stephenson, 30, played eight games for Geelong last season in his first year on an AFL list.
He made three appearances for the Tigers during the pre-season, as well as playing in the clash with the Indigenous All Stars in Alice Springs last month.

Not necessarily. The promotions had to be done before the start of the season. Just because O was promoted, doesn't mean he'll be playing straight away.

Great reward for wonderful preseason form from both players. Really reinforces Hardwicks mantra that every player must earn their place in the team this year given the competition for spots.
Petterd could be a real steel for us and another punch in the guts for the hapless Dees. Why they didn't try him in the backline is incredible short sighted but perhaps he just never performed. Hopefully he remains a consistent performer for us.
The Big O is insurance and will I doubt will play unless Maric needs a rest throughout the year. I think the elevation is as much a message to the rest of the team as it is for team depth. Longegan probably was pencilled in early to claim the second place on the list but given both players form over the off season you can't preach one message only to live another. Longegan will be elevate if he earns in at Coburg and if a midfielder goes down (or fails to get up).
I'm happy with all of our mature age recruits to date....except A. Edwards who in my eyes has shown nothing to date.

I like this post because it is thoughtful, not abusive and links to the best interest of the club.
Could swear some posters here are thinking of joining an alternate ticket with Brucie Monteeth

Big O was a logical choice as support for Ivan, and Petterd was no surprise given his form over summer. Very good choices!

This time last year we promoted both Brad Miller and Addam Maric. Within six months they were both gonski.

Let's hope this time around we have better luck with Petterd and the Big O and they can translate good/promising preseason form into the real stuff :pray.

Petterd is only 24and if he wants to can cement a regular place in the 22 and be a long term fix.
Stephenson adds insurance until McBean or anyone else for that matter can adequately and successfully be a second foil in the ruck.
No brainers really.
These boys could be here for a lot longer than last years promoted rookies. :thumbsup
As others have mentioned Aaron Edwards thus far has shown diddly squat. :help

Puts a lot of pressure on Griffiths to be the #2 forward

im starting to think Lonergan didnt get promoted because maybe Axle is coming good and might not be as far away as 1st thought. lets hope. :pray

Axel told me he will be ready for rounds 2-3. Does that help?

I would think Lonergan didn't get promoted because he had played only 3 qtrs of footy in the per-season where the other 2 had played plenty

Agree. Lonergan has played very little football thus far this pre-season. Pettard meanwhile has played pretty much every game off half-back. Lonergan will get his chance when some poor soul gets a long term injury. Orren had to be promoted - ahead of Pettard if we only had one rookie elevation - as an injury for only a couple of weeks to Maric could have cooked our season

Axel is always 4 weeks away.
I'd have to say Petterd looks alright so far but lets not get too carried away. He has hit a few targets and done all the right things and good on him, but there is still a question mark over Petterd under pressure which worries me, and let's not forget how easy it was to run the ball out of the Demons forward line which he was part of. Hopefully he fixes that and to keep his cool under severe pressure. Then I'll be convinced.
