Tigers try to find room for top draft pick Nick Vlastuin

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says top draft pick Nick Vlastuin is AFL match ready, but he's no certainty to debut against St Kilda on Friday night.
Hardwick said Vlastuin’s omission from their Round 1 side was because of the Tigers new-found depth.

"The coach is very excited about his prospects as well (as the fans),'' Hardwick said.

"It's a tough one. Funnily enough, he's probably the most ready Round 1 draft pick we've had, but because of the depth of our side, the talent that's available at the moment, he's just missed out.

"He'll force his way in, I've got no doubt. He was very good at the weekend again. Whether he makes his debut this week, three weeks’ time, he's going to play at some stage.''

Hardwick said he would have to make some "tough calls'' at match committee.

"No doubt you like to reward winning form,'' Hardwick said of team selection.

"In saying that we've got players like (Dylan) Grimes that are available to play, Ricky Petterd will put up his hand, Chris Knights, Nick Vlastuin, some quality players as well.

"We've got some options.

"It's very important (depth), if you don't play well, you go out.

"Whether we make changes this week or not we'll certainly make a few tough calls in match committee this afternoon.

"It's probably something that we haven't had for a period of time. It's certainly good when you go to our Coburg side and you watch them play and you certainly see a lot of players that are capable of playing AFL football.

"We've got ourselves in a good situation.''

Hardwick said he had addressed the last quarter of Richmond's five-point Round 1 win against Carlton, when the Tigers almost let a 36-point three-quarter time lead slip.

"We've just got to make sure we don't take that form into quarter one on Friday night,'' he said

Had a chuckle when I read these

Hardwick said he would have to make some "tough calls'' at match committee.

I read this to mean; no changes this week folks  ;D

Not sure we do to be honest, some poor pre-season form was rewarded and some good pre-season form wasn't rewarded in round 1

So is that a typo? Should it say "No doubt we don't like to reward winning form"  ;D

When does this apply exactly? Confirmation please

I wouldn't read much into pre-season form WP. We don't know what the players were instructed to do. Little research is done going into NAB cup games and it's more to do with preparing your own team for round 1. Cotchin was pretty average in the pre-season. Could have been told to try and cope with a hard tag without support. Maybe we should have dropped him for Arnot against Carlton. Others could have been told to just run out games and best try not to get injured on the way. No surprise the B-team played their guts out against Essendon because they're trying to pinch a spot.

Was the last Coburg game a preseason game or the first VFL round of the season? The form of some of the AFL listed players playing for Coburg was exceptional so I just wonder. Only players who struggled a little on Thursday night were Ellis, Nahas and perhaps Griff. There were a few more who played below the heights of 2012 (Maric, Cotch, Grigg etc) but they still played very good games.

I can't see any players getting dropped though I would personally like to see Nahas given a rest for Vlaustin.

Coburg's game last weekend (Sat) was a VFL practice game Stripes

Coburg play their round 1 game this week, Sunday -v- Sandrigham at Coburg

Wouldn't be surprised if Nahas was out for Vlastuin. Being a sub 2 weeks running wouldn't do his match fitness any good   ;)

Think Nahas may stay this week as he was good last year against the Saints and if does doubt they would start him as a sub again
