Preview: Power v Tigers
By Harry Thring
afl.com.au
Tuesday, May 7, 2013
SUMMARY
Richmond has dropped three in a row and a fourth to the Power will raise serious questions about their ability to pose a serious threat to the top eight. Port lost its first game of the year last weekend to North Melbourne, although another stuff was almost enough to steal a win in Hobart. Slow starts are hurting the Power this year – they've lost four of their six opening terms. The Tigers haven't lost an opening quarter yet, so unless the home side comes out punching, another strong second half might be needed to seal victory.
WHERE AND WHEN:
AAMI Stadium, Saturday May 11, 1.15pm
LAST FIVE TIMES
R23, 2012, Richmond 16.10 (106) drew Port Adelaide 16.10 (106) at the MCG
R6, 2012, Richmond 13.13 (91) d Port Adelaide 8.6 (54) at AAMI Stadium
R10, 2011, Port Adelaide 13.11 (89) d Richmond 10.14 (74) at TIO Stadium
R22, 2010, Port Adelaide 18.14 (122) d Richmond 16.16 (112) at Etihad Stadium
R10, 2010, Richmond 10.17 (77) d Port Adelaide 3.12 (30) at AAMI Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. AAMI Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for the Tigers of late; they've won the last two there against the Power and three of the last four.
2. Centre clearances shapes as a telling statistic on Saturday. Richmond ranks second in the competition, while the Power have struggled all season and are ranked 12th.
3. The Tigers' tackling remains a huge issue – they're ranked last for tackles laid this season. Port Adelaide have been more impressive, ranking sixth.
4. Port Adelaide’s defence has been impressive in 2013, conceding the second fewest points in the competition. The Tigers have let through more and are ranked 10th.
5. Damien Hardwick’s first win as Richmond coach was in round 10, 2010 and was against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.
6. Port Adelaide and Richmond met twice in 2012 – the Tigers won by 37-points in round six at AAMI Stadium before their round 23 clash at the MCG ended in a thrilling draw.

FINAL INTERCHANGES
Richmond: Dustin Martin, Jake Batchelor, Nick Vlastuin
Substitute: Nathan Foley
I would've thought with Cotch out we would have Axel in front the start and then sub him out if he starts to run out of legs due to lack of AFL match fitness.
-
just got here
havent seen coach
he might be under the chicken salt sign
crowd not looking great hopefully stays that way
-
Lloyd already bagging us and the game hasn't even started yet. Yep we have down the past 3 weeks in all those KPIs because that's what happens when you lose games Lloydy :wallywink.

I heard he's been working the frog cake stand. If you can't find him just look for the guy carrying 2 pie floaters after the game.
-
Orren to do most the rucking and Maric to play mostly forward?
-
Jacko ::)

50-13
-
Quarter time
Richmond 8.2-50
Port Adel. 2.1-13
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Newman, King, Nahas, Vlastuin, Tuck
-
Best so far:
Big O, Edwards, Jack, Ellis and Kingy
-
Dont want to sound a pessimist but we must follow that quarter with the same again in the second. Have seen so many of these leads simply whittled back to even at half time after players get lazy.
-
Big O dominating in the ruck.
Titch and Lids are on fire.
Jack with 3 already.
Plenty of boos for Chappy means he's got a fair bit of footy.
Hard to find any poor Tigers.
Agree Lozza. Now the test is to not sit back and go to sleep as we have done in the past. No doubt Port will get a rev up from Hinkley so we need to keep up the intensity and defensive pressure and aim to stretch the lead further. Go for the kill!
-
That 4 goal burst in that quarter was all from Edwards clearance work in the center. Fantastic period of play!!
-
Good start. :thumbsup
Big tick 1st quarter.
Well done Lids, Edwards and Tuck. :clapping
-
Free to Tuck midfield. Over to Dusty across to Rance. To Newy hands to Morris 60m and he hits up Kingy 45m out. Misses.
Rich 51
Port 13
-
C'mon Tiges. Don't start doing stupid things.
-
Hold firm, they've got the momentum
-
Jacko can you actually ever kick to our advantage ::).
Lucky Port are missing.
Rich 51
Port 16
-
Martin free kick, 30m out tight angle.... miss
-
Tucky through the guts and goes towards Dusty. He was outnumbers but he gets a free 35m out. Misses.
Rich 52
Port 16
-
Inside 50s: 2 - 6.
We need to lift and nullify their run and regain the momentum.
-
Newy gets the ball and centres it to Jack. His 4th :gotigers
Needed that one.
Rich 58
Port 16
-
Umpires get their 3rd, Vlastuin tripped, no free, Power take it forward for a goal
-
Nahas' centering kick in our forward line goes Port's way and they run it up the other end for goal :scream
58 - 23
-
Reiwoldt is clearly tackled round ankles.... Morris 2 mins later in a reverse headlock on the boundary lol wtf...
-
throwing the ball out one handed, ...wtf is going on
-
Port get their 1st without umpire help
-
Geez this ticks you off. We're almost 5 goals up and we've allowed Port to get on top in general play in this 2nd quarter.
Another goal to Port :banghead
58 - 29
-
Dusty to McGuane HF. 55m out. Point.
Rich 59
Port 29
-
Turnover. Knights goal :gotigers
Rich 65
Port 29
Knights looks to have buckled at the knee as he slipped to kick it :(
-
Knights kicks a goal and is on the deck grabbing his knee...looks bad...
-
Knights gets a goal, but looks like he dislocated a knee cap as he slips when he kicks :(
-
Knights gets a goal, but looks like he dislocated a knee cap as he slips when he kicks :(
A dislocated knee cap isn't good but it would be better than a ACL. 3aw are saying it looks like a ACL though.
-
just hope that is all it is, his knee looked ugly in the replay, hope there is no ligament issues... he looked like he caught his foot on the turf ....
-
Foley subbed on. On ya Axel.
Another Port turnover. Dusty goal :gotigers
Rich 71
Port 29
-
Geez Lukey. We should have had a goal there :scream.
-
Half-time
Richmond 8.2 11.5-71
Port Adel. 2.1 4.5-29
Goals: Riewoldt 4, Newman, Knights, Nahas, Vlastuin, King, Tuck, Martin
-
So far enjoying the games of Stephenson, Ellis (going in hard a few times), Vlastuin and Edwards (so quick and flukey on the inside).
Geez Lukey. We should have had a goal there :scream.
Newman would have been better off aiming for the goal square to bounce it through of McGuane to tap it through without having to pick it up. It's tough to hit a bloke running away.
-
Who's nervous ?
-
Now lets see if they can bring this poo home hard this time, we need percentage, bit of morale and to learn how to run games out.
-
Now lets see if they can bring this poo home hard this time, we need percentage, bit of morale and to learn how to run games out.
Metamucil endorsement if I ever saw one.
-
Got out of that quarter in front on the scoreboard at least. More thanks to Port turnovers than us being on top in general play. We won't/don't get away with quarters like that against the top sides.
Titch, Newy, Dusty and Rance (done a job on Sarge and now Stewart) in our bests. Jack has made the most of his chances and is shutting up his critics.
-
good pressure forces turnovers, they been good today. We still not top four but we are definitely a bit better than middle of the road.
-
great to see Foley has not changed... first kick straight to port
has no composure and crap skills.. always rushed ... good players always have time
-
Newmo's intercept mark was awesome, think it was the one that led to the Knights goal or one of the chain.
Foley hasn't played much footy user, he has to blow out some cobwebs, cut the man some slack he is good player, when he is in form he is top 22 everytime.
-
who is that little dark skinned forward they got, he is terrific, great mark and makes me nervous when the ball is anywhere near him, he is slick ...
-
We haven't kicked the first goal of a 3rd qtr all year. Where's the rev up and killer instinct Tigers?
71 - 35
-
Be proactive Tigers not reactive :banghead.
50m to Port and goal.
71 - 41
-
here come the umpies...
nah that was fair enough on replay
-
The umps have been shocking but you can't blame them for this. Either it's lack of fitness or we're mentally soft. Only we can be over 5 goals up and look shakey. There's no run that we saw earlier in the game. Surprise surprise we are static and it's a turnover.
71 - 42
-
We have the wobbles, too defensive, will lose with this mindset.
-
LIIIIIIFT TIGERS!!!!
-
YEEEEES!!!!
-
This static stop start crap :scream. No support run from behind and handball receives.
Lids finally puts the foot down and goes long but it's knocked out of Jack's hands. Ball-up 40m out.
Finally we bust through and Kingy goals :gotigers
Rich 77
Port 42
Needed that.
-
Great smother Morris. Lids 4 bounces to 55 and hits up Nahas 40m out.
Thank gawd Lids is playing today.
Nahas misses.
Rich 78
Port 43
-
Ellis intercepts and Lids marks 40m out over to Grigg 20m and he goals :gotigers
Rich 84
Port 43
-
Great play, Ellis to Lids, he kicks to Grigg, makes the umpire work from 15 out but it's a GOAL!!!
-
tucky maybe elbow or shoulder...hopefully a stinger
-
Ellis standing up this qtr across HB.
Tucky dislocated shoulder and up the race :(
-
Bloody fumbling and turnovers Tiges :scream.
Thankfully they are missing.
-
Bah grigg should of popped that to kingy....
-
ahh well he slotted it ill pay that
-
Port turnover. Grigg from 40m and goals :gotigers
Rich 90
Port 45
-
Our defensive pressure and Port's poor skills are keeping the lead out to 7 goals.
-
That's why we got rid of you Sarge.
-
Jacksons chase down there was enough to cruel the kick and save our bacon lol
-
Top mark McGuane aaand.... goal
-
That's why we got rid of you Sarge.
BS he is a great kicked missed one so what
and once again rance being owned
stuff rance
-
Floss to FF and McGuane floats in from the side to mark 15m out. Goal :gotigers
Rich 96
Port 46
-
Lukey floats across the front of the pack, great mark and goal.
-
Jacksons chase down there was enough to cruel the kick and save our bacon lol
Credit where it's due that was a great chase by Jacko. Jacko's work off the ball is fine. It's when he has it that he stuffs up.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 8.2 11.5 15.6-96
Port Adel. 2.1 4.5 6.10-46
Goals: Riewoldt 4, King 2, Grigg 2, Newman, Nahas, Vlastuin, McGuane, Tuck, Knights, Martin
-
Going well.....dreadful to see Knight go down and Tuck.
-
Lids and Ellis great that quarter. Floss pretty good too.
Knights' goal killed the momentum Port had and we got back on top in general play in the last 10 mins of that quarter.
50 pts up. Let's finally see some killer instinct Tiges - break their spirit and finish the game strong making this a percentage booster.
-
Hope our two injuries are ok. Totally stoked with Vlastuin the bloke is a goddam gem
-
Port goal.
96 - 53
C'mon Tiges. Don't go freaking asleep.
-
Gotta keep your feet Morris. Good tackle by Chappy.
-
Only need 1-2 goals to seal this. I don't care how much we win by. Walking wounded and put this idiot club back in their box.
-
:banghead.
96 - 59
-
what the actual stuff....
-
Foley dislocated finger.
Another goal to Port.
96 - 65
-
same poo we always do all that open space...
-
Getting a bit sick of these commentators barracking for Port the entire game.
Had to double check I didn't press red.
-
Where have our mids gone? No run, too few at each contest
-
Port have had the better of general play for longer since 1/4 time. It goes you the shizens.
Jacko to 70m and Newy marks. Goal :gotigers
Rich 102
Port 65
Phew!
-
Hooray 102. First to 100 more often than not wins.
-
Nahas into the midfield. Tuck on holding his hand to hold in his shoudler and goes to the goalsquare. We are obviously now struggling with the rotations.
-
Free to Edwards in the centre. To Floss who goes long and Jack too good marks. 30m out. Goalllllllllllllllllllll :gotigers
Rich 108
Port 65
-
LOL West-OFF today.
108 - 66
14 mins Q4
-
LOL Monfires :lol
-
Lids 31 possies
Dusty 30 possies
:clapping
Great stuff Newy :clapping. Been brilliant today.
-

-
McGuane loose man in defence now.
Port fans now leaving the ground (http://barefootpreachr.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/bye-bye-male-smiley-smiley-emoticon-000291-large.gif)
-
total arse...
-
Lucky leg break to them.
108 - 72
23 mins Q4
-
Why the stuff are we peeing around with it :banghead
-
Cornes fumbles in the midfield. Dusty to Nahas who gets it Kingy on 50m. Goalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll :gotigers
Rich 114
Port 72
-
Why the stuff are we peeing around with it :banghead
3 injuries so we can't rotate as much off the bench. Need to conserve energy by playing tempo footy.
-
they are playing a good brand of footy I have to say, they move the ball fast when they get it and bring it into their 50 fast, they also win a lot of clearances, if they had a better list they would be pretty lethal the way they play.
-
GO TIGES!
-
SIREN!!!!!
We won 114-73! :gotigers
-
Final Score
Richmond 8.2 11.5 15.6 18.6-114
Port Adel. 2.1 4.5 6.10 10.13-73
Goals: Riewoldt 5, King 3, Grigg 2, Newman 2, Nahas, Vlastuin, Tuck, Martin, Knights, McGuane
-
Gutsy win in the end. No Cotch or Grimes amongst others and then losing Tucky and Knights during the game yet we still won by 7 goals. We needed contributions from our lesser likes and our youngsters and they stood up. That allowed our A-graders Lids, Dusty and Jack to out class Port.
-
terrific win with contributors all over the ground. Flosstoon is fantastic young footballer. Win against Melbourne next week and then it all comes down to our players for the rest of season. At 5-3 it would be very hard to miss the eight IMHO.
-
Really good game from Ellis. Had a massive dip and really starting to hit the footy hard.

That's the most important part. The second tiers set the bar. If the top shelf take a leaf we'll move to the next level.
-
YEah Ellis was awesome today, what I liked was he went in hard, took some contested grabs and was a lot cleaner, something clicked for him today. The other bloke who stood up was Newman, he was rock steady today, came out of nowhere to save our bacon quite a few times and turned the flow around.
-
just got here

I heard he's been working the frog cake stand. If you can't find him just look for the guy carrying 2 pie floaters after the game.
His idiot is a frog cake
-
tl;dr thread but Ellis fumbled some easy ball because he saw a few blokes' pupils
has no probs going in for the ground ball or back with the flight, craps himself in pack situos
Def not an inside mid
Also reminds me of magilla gorilla, I do like him, no neck mofo
-
Didn't find the Port Adelaide biased commentary to my taste ::)...When is it our turn ?
-
Great to see us hard at the footy today!
:thumbsup - YES

Ellis's second half was much better than his first half. In the first half he coughed up possession and fumbled. He is a good mark and can lay a good tackle but he needs to work on getting clean possession without fumbling. Deledio and Martin were outstanding. On this form Martin will win the best and fairest. His ball use was outstanding. King was really good. Happy with Stephenson's and Jack's performances. Newman deserves special credit. Played his best game for ages. Was very good.
-
Batch looked ordinary yesterday, slow too.
-
Batch looked ordinary yesterday, slow too.
Ordinary but not bad IMO. Hasn't seemed to improve since his first year, potentially gone backwards actually
-
gunna give em some credit. didnt think we would win this game but they found a way. a win is a win.
still theres a lot of improvement needed and i reckon we need to keep on bringing kids in for games as much as possible.
-
Batch played a very good game IMO. His direct opponent only had 4 touches for the game.
-
I guess what we look for from Batch is some drive out of the backline, considering hes a pretty good kick, and we don't get a lot of that from him,but maybe that role is primarily given to bacha, pettard, newman, and ellis
-
Ellis fumbles it too much for my liking, it seems every time he has it in his hands he drops it
-
Mrakov ellis does fumble I agree, but so does titch I reckon yet he has been quite effective this year
-

Imagine them without the fumbling! Brownlow medalists!

fair suck of the sauce bottle mrakov ,wouldnt go as far as brownlow medalists..how about all Australian ? will that do?

once I worked out how to get the lid off I may have had 1 or 2
no doubt the permaban is on its way
-
when it comes to fumbles ellis and edwards hands are vice like compared to batchelor.
for me grimes is very much an automatic in for batchelor. gives us a genuine tall running option who is v/good in the air.
for me in time the back 6 should include morris, dea who from all reports is stiff as, to not be getting a game. plus mcintosh another tall quick skillful running defender who can and does play accountable footy.
all areas of the ground is a work in progress and we do need to keep on improving each area to become a force.

Tuck and Deledio in the mid and allowed to attack the ball. Richmond wins. Deledio brought Martin into the game as well. Skilled players feeding each other. Vickery out and our forward line converts and we are able to close down and pressure the opposition more. Big O providing first use of the ball in the middle. There is a game plan even if it was forced on Hardwick by injury.
Ellis kept fumbling and turning it over. He doesn't have the tank for AFL. Only really outdone by Edwards but Edwards demonstrated a sublime ability to read the play and his aggression was extraordinary. How many in the back free kicks. Nahas is so slow. Not up to it. Batchelor looked very ordinary. Big difference between his best and his worst and more often we get his worst. Jackson still turnover king.
Will struggle now without Tuck. Would have won the last two games with him in the side and Deledio being used effectively. But then, without the injuries, Port would have beat us. Should be happy with the win.

Or maybe because Deledio wasn't getting tagged only going head to head. And am I the only one who thought our forward line suffered without Vickery? How many key forwards kicked goals? Just one, Jack

I thought he did but read the stats. And now that I've gone back to double check they changed them! ;D
