Mark Williams has a ‘fire in his belly' to take on the coaching job at Melbourne
Andrew Capel
From: The Adelaide Advertiser
June 20, 2013
MARK Williams wants the Melbourne job and would be an even better coach with the Demons than he was at Port Adelaide.
That's the opinion of the man who knows him best, his younger brother and triple Port Magpies premiership coach Stephen Williams.
Stephen spent last weekend with Mark in Melbourne and said "the fire in his belly" to coach again is as strong as ever.
"His appetite for everything football is still huge and there's no doubt he wants to be a senior coach again," said Stephen.
"He'd be an ideal fit at Melbourne because it's gone down the untried youth path and failed now it needs an experienced coach with a strong track record.
"Mark has that, he's great at working with young players and I'm convinced he'd do an excellent job at Melbourne if he was given the chance."
Stephen said Mark has "unfinished business" after his 12-year stint at the Power, which included the club's only premiership in 2004, ended "before he wanted it to" midway through 2010.
He said Mark was refreshed after nearly three years out of the head coaching box and would be a better coach than he was at Port after being as assistant coach at GWS in 2011 and 2012 and now Richmond, where he has helped spark the career of exciting young midfielder Dustin Martin.
"He's certainly recharged and would love a crack at getting Melbourne back on track," said Stephen.
"He has a proven track record of developing young players, which the Demons have a lot of, and in my opinion he is better than a lot of current AFL coaches.
"I see and listen to a lot of coaches now and I don't think they've got anything on Mark.
"He's certainly very innovative and he knows how to produce and get the best out of his players."
Williams is the bookies' early favourite for the Melbourne job, which was vacated on Monday when Mark Neeld was sacked.
Former Crows coach Neil Craig has been installed as caretaker coach for the rest of the season and has indicated he is interested on winning the job on a full-time basis.
Stephen said Mark was enjoying his time as development coach at Richmond, which smashed Adelaide on Saturday to move into the top eight.
But he said he felt underused at Tigerland.
"He's enjoying it there but he's certainly up for a lot more than that," Stephen said.
Stephen admitted the pressure took its toll on Mark at the end of his Port reign, where he led the club to the finals in seven his 12 years in charge, including three minor premierships, two grand finals and one flag.
But he said he is ready to be a senior coach again.
"There is a lot of pressure on the head coach of an AFL club but Mark has recharged his batteries and is ready to go again," Stephen said.
"I'm sure he would love to get another senior coaching job and get the chance to show everyone what he could do.
"He's got a terrific record and I'm sure he could help turn Melbourne around if he was given the opportunity."

Matty Knights could pip Chocco, Eade and co. for the Melbourne gig ...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew Knights has refused to rule out making a return to senior coaching at AFL level.
He joins a handful of names being touted as possible replacements for sacked Melbourne coach Mark Neeld, but Knights is keeping his cards close to his chest.

Cotchin backs Williams to coach Demons
By AAP .
23 June 2013 08:04PM EST
RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin has backed Mark Williams as Melbourne's next full-time senior AFL coach, saying he would work well with their young players.
Tigers assistant coach Williams and Collingwood coaching director Rodney Eade are among the frontrunners to take over at the Demons next season, with the club also keen to change Paul Roos' mind.
Roos has said he is not interested in a return to coaching, but the Demons have contacted the Sydney premiership coach.
Since the Demons sacked Mark Neeld last Monday and Neil Craig took over as caretaker coach, Williams has kept his own counsel.
Williams joined Richmond this season as an assistant.
"You only have to look at his energy and vibrancy on the bench - he's always involved," Cotchin told Channel Seven's Game Day.
"He almost has a form of ADD (attention deficit disorder), the way he deals with a lot of our players."
Williams coached Port Adelaide to their only premiership in 2004 and also the 2007 grand final.
His 12 years in charge at the Power ended badly in 2010, when Matthew Primus replaced him during the season.
Williams worked with Kevin Sheedy at Greater Western Sydney before joining the Tigers.
"He's so good with the young players, which is probably suited to a Melbourne," Cotchin said.
"From all reports, he was fantastic with the young guys at GWS as well.
"He's a really good person and he gets the best out of them.
"He drives you up the wall at times, but he would absolutely get the best out of a young group."
Craig said after Saturday's loss to St Kilda that he remained unsure about whether he wanted to apply for the Demons job beyond this season.

THERE has been an unexplained betting plunge on Paul Roos to take the vacant Melbourne coaching position.
The Sydney Swans premiership mentor was backed in from $7 on Friday to as short as $1.80 on Monday morning.

Richmond will allow assistant Mark Williams to be interviewed for the Melbourne coaching job
Jon Ralph
From: Herald Sun
July 17, 2013 10:00PM
RICHMOND will give its blessing for Mark Williams to be interviewed by Melbourne's coaching sub-committee despite strict new AFL Coaches Association rules.
The Demons have formed a five-man committee and alerted the management of Richmond's Mark Williams and Collingwood's Rodney Eade of their preliminary interest.
Melbourne has taken on face value Paul Roos' statement he will not coach this year, but now face restrictions brought about by the new AFLCA memorandum of understanding.
Collingwood has made it clear it will not allow even the smallest distraction to its premiership tilt after losing Mark Neeld in the finals in 2011.
The new rules when ratified by the AFL will mean appointments made during finals must be delayed until that coach has exited the finals race.
It will also see clubs seeking to interview assistant coaches contact that person's current club as a courtesy, with some potential restrictions on when assistants can be interviewed.
But while the Pies are playing hardball, Richmond will allow Williams to be interviewed during the home-and-away season.
It would be shattered to lose him given his input this year, but will consent to him being interviewed in the home-and-away season as long as it is not a distraction.
Eade has made it clear that while he still has the fire in the belly to become a senior coach, he will not let anything distract from Collingwood's finals campaign.
His manager Phil Mullen said yesterday he had been contacted by Jackson but not asked about an interview time for Eade.
"I don't know what the (AFLPA) procedure is. I know it's changed recently. He just said we are making contact with you and up the track we will make further contact with you. That's the only conversation we have had, and it was a little while ago now. His priority right now is his role at Collingwood, and it will remain that way.
"He is happy in the role there, and all of his energies are going into that. I think Melbourne has to make a decision as to whether they have interest. I don't have an indication right now that they are going to do that or not.''

I wouldn't worry too much about Chocco going to Melbourne I fear more that if Golden Kouratha and Bomber lose their jobs at Peptide City then Chocco who has been an assistant there at the past might be a perfect fit to coach there. :shh

Melbourne's CEO Peter Jackson last night on Fox Footy said he's spoken to Chocco and Rodney Eade.
