Tigers can't afford to let Jack Riewoldt leave

THERE comes a time when a football club needs to pay way overs to keep a player.
For Richmond, that time is right now in its dealings with full-forward Jack Riewoldt.
The two-time Coleman medallist does not want to leave the Tigers, but the fact is he is yet to re-commit after months of negotiations.
And the Fremantle approach is significant, at least $200,000 a season more than what Richmond has tabled.
Just as there comes a time for a club to pay overs to keep a player, there also comes a time for another club to offer way overs to attract that same player.
The Dockers went extremely hard at Travis Cloke last year. Equally as hard and unsuccessfully at Harry Taylor this year.
They know they are thereabouts under Ross Lyon's control, but, clearly, they have determined that a premiership could come far easier with a marquee forward on their list than it may without one.
What if the Dockers have actually upped their offer, from $850,000 a year to say, $950,000 a year since Taylor officially said no? Or more? That would make things very interesting, in light of Richmond's offer of about $600,000 a season.
Luke McPharlin, Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands may have just one season remaining in their grand careers. They would be firmly behind their club's pursuit of Riewoldt.
What price a flag for that trio? Surely they would even consider altering their current deals if it meant squeezing Riewoldt in.
And what price a flag for Lyon? He is the best coach in the competition. But he hasn't won a premiership.
He's not one to look back in life, but he knows he baulked, at the very last minute, at recruiting Ben Cousins at the end of 2008. Some St Kilda people still believe to this day that had Cousins been part of the Saints' line-up in 2009, the Grand Final would not have been lost to Geelong.
Lyon will not die wondering on this.
Tigers' footy operations boss Dan Richardson boasts nous as sound as anyone in football. With his background as a high-end player manager, he knows the AFL market.
It would go totally against his beliefs to offer Riewoldt more than his club could afford, but he would be well aware he now has to do just that.
The risk, of course, with such an approach is potentially losing another player, and with Dustin Martin and Reece Conca also requiring fresh Richmond deals, things will be extremely tight.
But Martin, as brilliant as he is, and Conca, as promising as he is, are not worth as much to Richmond's future as Riewoldt.
By way of comparison with Riewoldt, they are replaceable. Riewoldt is not.
Any temptation - even if it is as low as a 10 per cent chance - that Riewoldt or his management may be peeking sideways at the Dockers' offer, must be removed by Richmond.

Would we want to see Jack go - no. Could we survive without him - yes. He would be hard to replace just like Richo was but hopefully we are more about a system or structure of roles now than an individual. Good players will improve the structure but their absence will not cripple it. As long as we have forwards who keep the opposition accountable we can generate a winning score through multiple options.
Jack is a creative talent and I would love him to stay but if he is foolish and selfish enough to leave for the promise of extra money alone, then he will be missed but he can be replaced. We can't pay overs any longer particularly in this market.

Why is it a poor example bents...
Carlton kicked more goals in 2011 than it did in 2009 when Fev won the Coleman.

The club is on the rise. Players can see that. With the expanded competition it will make it harder to get into finals. Believe players want success and if we can offer them that I am hopeful they will stay together as a unit.

I agree with the vermin. I have a special love for Dusty but he is easier to replace than Jack. KPPs with proven goal kicking ability are hard to find.

I liken Jacks importance to Richmond as a double edged necessity for both club and player.
Talented, smart, creative and important to the team.
Petulant, arrogant and can go missing when he sulks.
Team is better off with him in it but can live without him
Will never be as big a player for another club as he has become at Richmond.
Richmond is lucky to have him but he is equally lucky to have Richmond.
When you look at the wash up - is a Tiger through and through.
In fact, when you think about - he is to Richmond what the Coach is to OER ;D

With our dream team midfield we could bring richo out of retirement and he d be o the end of 60+. Sign dusty first is my advice...dont be alarmed though jack is a heart and soul type player, the silly idiot needs to realise the kinda money the lkes of Jon brown and Travis cloke passed up on their way to premiership glory, oh and dont forget his cousin knocking back millions to join GC. Dont be a greedy little idiot jack :shh

Barrett thinks we cant afford to loose him, I think we can. Sure we would need to replace him but there are options within the Club, via trade and comming up in draft that may even be better. Overrated for me and I will be rather taken back if we over pay for him.

I actually think Dustin Martin would be harder to replace than Jack Riewoldt. He could've very easily kicked 4.1 against Freo. With Cotchin and Deledio getting more attention, we need Martin to keep the midfield going. Considering the inside 50 deliveries have been average at best this year, they would be a lot worse without Martin and then Riewoldt would be having a bigger sook
