'A good kick in the backside': Hardwick

NO DOUBT, the Tiger army will be in a filthy mood for the rest of the weekend after their team jumped to an early five-goal lead over Carlton at the MCG on Saturday afternoon before losing by 10 points.

To say Richmond supporters hate Carlton might be understating things a touch.

But football clubs have to take away such emotion if they are to function at their best, so the mood within the inner sanctum on Saturday evening was more of annoyance.

"You never like to lose. It was a good kick in the backside," said coach Damien Hardwick of the loss which for all practical purposes, ends the club's bid for a top-four berth.

"The second quarter was where it was won and lost," he said. "They hit us incredibly hard after that quarter-time break. They obviously got a fair rocket and they came out and played some hard footy. Credit where it is due. They were better than us during that part of the game."

The Tigers slammed on eight goals to three in the first term. It was great footy to watch, but unsustainable. Goals were being kicked from everywhere and virtually every inside-50 entry impacted the scoreboard.

What interested Hardwick was how his team responded to the inevitable Carlton comeback. The Blues kicked six goals to two in the second term to trail by five points at half-time. They hit the lead for good early in the last quarter and stayed in front from there.

"I thought we were a little bit clumsy. We overused the ball at times and we thought we would be a little bit better than we produced," he said.

He pointed out errors from Reece Conca and Jack Riewoldt where they centred the ball in the wrong part of the ground that led to turnovers that would lead to Carlton goals that sparked its revival.

"Whether our guys were so far in front they could take some liberties, well, that's not what good sides do," he said. "We'll look and learn and we have to get better in some areas. There's no doubt about that."

Hardwick reported afterwards that skipper Trent Cotchin just had a bad day after being held to eight possessions by Ed Curnow and he held few concerns over a knock to the knee that hobbled Cotchin. Forward Ricky Petterd strained a hamstring and the severity of that will become clear early next week.

Small forward Matt White missed with soreness, a call that was made 90 minutes before the bounce and was more precautionary than anything.

It is the second straight week where the Tigers held a handy lead only for their opponents to get back in the game. They arrested the slide just in time against the Brisbane Lions last week, but could not hold the Blues at bay this time around.

Hardwick said he didn't see the concentration lapses as a particular area for concern and gave the praise to Carlton, whose numbers he said, belied its ninth place on the ladder.

"Proud man," he said of Blues coach Mick Malthouse, "and a proud club. They're better than the media gives them credit for."

Which again sums up the difference between the Richmond the club, and Richmond the supporter base. At the Cricketers, the Corner, the London Tavern and the other famous drinking institutions around Tigertown, there would never be such praise lavished on anything or anyone to do with the old, dark, navy Blues.

He forgot to mention:

I'd like to apologize to all the Richmond faithful and their families for ruining what has been a great season thus far. We've achieved so much this year together and a win today would've been our thankyou to you all for your generosity, patience, loyalty and for being the best supporter base in the country.

Today would've been the icing on the cake and we would of loved it if we had ended the finals chances of those cheating pricks. But we stuffed it up and we've left a sour taste in the mouths of all of you and for this reason we are truly sorry and we vow NEVER to lose to that cheating scum team EVER again!

Sincerely,

Damien Hardwick

P. S. we also hope we have the chance to play them 1st week in the finals so we can repay the debt we owe to you all and prove to everyone that we love nothing more than to smash those cheating scum right out of the finals. If this eventuates we vow to leave nothing to chance and promise to annihilate them.
So let it be written, so let it be done!

I'm with you Mr. Tigra. It just infuriates me so much that we continue to allow ourselves to be owned by this cheating, tanking, filthy vomit trickle of a club. We owe them for so many years of pain it's just not funny, and after 1/4 time yesterday, when we were in a perfect position to start repaying that debt in kind, instead we turn up our toes again, like we almost did in round 1. I long for the day when we give this cheating scum the belting they deserve.

We are going to get a North Melbourne type of reputation of " stopping" during games.

Why doesn't Vickery jump to mark the football? Stretch the hands out and jump.

It was so where was the spin.

The fact is we can beat Hawthorn easily but no matter where we are and what we do Carlton Nought and Geelong have our measure.

You should be thanking him. Given you something to whine about.

If we weren't making finals this year the sky would have fallen the four horseman of the apocalypse would be blowing their trumpets and the total rebuild will need to begin the minute the siren sounds on our round 23 game v Essendrugs.

I would think Cotch and Martin having 20 odd possies between them,Ellis 6 after quarter time, Foley having more clangers than the next 3 Tiggers yesterday combined and hitting the post  3 times in the last quarter doesn't help but hey Dimma may have had a bad day in the box too but he is the only bloke to coach us to finals in 12 years and currently statistically it is easier to coach a team to an AFL flag than it is to coach RFC to the finals since our last finals app in 2001.

Malakies boys.

We lost intensity in the Brisbane game as well. We need to bring the same intensity week in week out and within games. Sydney is the bench mark. Need to replicate that attitude.

Sydney lost intensity too last week against the Pies in the last 3 quarters too.
You'll find that whilst winning form is great form for a team that is entrenched in the 8 at this stage of the year a loss is not the end of the world.

It hurts because its Carlscum. If we can distinguish that fact from the other then one can move on and look forward to the remainder of the season.

My issues isnt that we need a total rebuild.

Its that we are playing list blockers cause we are off the understanding we are a grand final chance  :huh

if one was to make a list of the promising footballers currently at the club and the amount of games they have played this year itd be interesting reading

You reckon we ain't going to upgrade Bents.
I reckon these list cloggers will either be delisted or traded out and more promising drafts, trades and free agency acquisitions brought in. :thumbsup

It's called List Management Tucker, we've been doing it since Hartley arrived and its a WIP.
Would've thought fans would clearly see the progression since 2009 while acknowledging we still have some work to do

Thanks y&aI know but I know the dislike Bents has for McGuane. He means well and yep I would love McBean in the side at Luke's expense whilst it may happen this week it ain't long term yet same with Elton. Anyway we are a WIP and I still think 2015 is our year to challenge for premiership honors given I reckon we still need two more drafts to fill the holes we currently have in our list to fill and show these list cloggers the door.

No reason why we can build on this year next year and get to Prelim by finishing to 4. :thumbsup
