Title: Hodge & Pavlich to select rep. teams to play week before round one (Age)
Post by: one-eyed on October 30, 2013, 02:14:56 AM
Matthew Pavlich would select one team under one AFL proposal, with premiership captain Luke Hodge the other ...

The representative game, a one-year trial put together largely to appease major sponsor NAB and broadcasters Channel Seven and Fox Footy, would be scheduled at Etihad Stadium on either Friday, March 7 or Saturday, March 8.

The clubs were told that the AFL could penalise any selected players who withdrew from the game by standing them down from their respective club's round-one fixture.

It is understood no more than four players would be selected from any one team, with those teams playing in the first week of the split first-round fixture, potentially represented by a maximum of three players and the travelling Dockers a maximum of two.

Clubs will also play pre-season practice games over that weekend, reducing any imbalance concerning match preparation on representative footballers. Should Hodge and Pavlich not captain the sides, two other high-profile captains would be chosen and the selection process televised.

Premiership coach Alastair Clarkson and Fremantle's Ross Lyon are not expected to coach the trial showcase game, which has been supported by Hodge, Gary Ablett and Scott Pendlebury.

How long do the players have to train with the rep side? Who needs round 1 preparation? :clapping

Load of crap.

I hope people don't turn up to the game and they kill it off once and for all.

I like the bit where they get suspended a game for refusing.

Why are those two selecting a rep side? Are they playing in it? Pavlich is passed that level now. Not even close to being the best key forward in the game.

Looks like this thing won't even see the light of day for the same reason State of Origin died off.

A PUSH to play a pre-season All-Star representative game that was backed by the AFL Players Association and considered by the AFL looks set to fail with AFL deputy CEO Gillon McLachlan saying the idea has not gained industry support.

The players had expressed a desire to play representative football and the AFL considered including an All-Star game in the revamped pre-season format, but many clubs had vehemently opposed the idea.

On Thursday McLachlan admitted such a game was unlikely in 2014.

If you are going to have representative footy then do it properly. The AFL love having a bye every second week now so surely something can be worked out in future. After 7-10 round a proper selection panel should pick two rep sides. Not Hodge and Pavlich who shouldn't be near a gig in this type of thing anymore. Only form in that current season should matter. So no characters like Hodge fluking it into the squad when they've been injured and out of form

Good idea Coach  :clapping

Supposedly it is the players that want representative footy. If they are serious about then they should be prepared to forgoe a BYE to play

Fans should pick the sides

I don't care about who Gerard Healy and Luke Darcy think are elite, although Brad Hill & Zac Clarke will feel ripped off
