Title: Why do you barrack for Richmond?
Post by: one-eyed on November 14, 2013, 12:45:00 PM
On the RFC website, the Club is asking why do you barrack for Richmond?

Why Tigerland feels like home to you? What makes it special? What are you memories of the Club growing up? Did you, or someone from your family, watch a game at the iconic Punt Road Oval?

Why do I barrack for Richmond
Pretty simple for me - I was brainwashed before I could barley walk by my older brother who in turn was brainwashed by the local kids from the area during one of our many eras of dominance.

Why Tigerland feels like home to me
Tigers means family to me. I go to the games with my son, brother, brother-in-law and friends every week. Before he became too sick to attendance, my old man used to come too. I plan on bringing all my kids along in the future as they get older and build up a tradition that will help keep us close throughout every stage of their lives.

What make it feel so special?
The atmosphere, the roller coaster of emotions and the sense of tribe. I love feeling part of something bigger than myself and feeling like together we are unstoppable.

What are your memories of the Club growing up?
One of my first memories is when we played in the 1982 GF and Carltons banner tore. I remember thinking that it was an omen and that we would win the game  ::). I also remember playing kick to kick with tigers gear on with the next door neighbor when I was around 5, pretending to be KB and Roach.

Did you, or someone from your family, watch a game at the iconic Punt Road Oval?
No but I am very much looking forward to seeing our reserves team do it for the first time in 2014 - can you imagine the crowd!!!

When I was a young child I had a blood test and the doctors were astounded that instead of being red my blood was yellow and black! ;D
I had no choice after that!

I didn't watch Richmond AFL but did watch a couple of VFL games during the Coburg alignment days, when Coburg played there wearing RFC jumpers  ;D

But both Ma & Pa Powell both watched games at Punt Road Oval back in the good old days

Pa Powell was a Collingwood supporter, his best mate barracked for Richmond. So when the teams played each other they went to the games. Although at the time Ma Powell didn't follow any particular team she'd go to the footy every week with my Dad to watch Collingwood, so when they played Richmond she went to the RFC games too.

I asked her once about games at PRO and she said she remembered standing in outer in the rain in mud up to her ankles  ;D

Followed the Tigers from the Age of three (1969) as My uncle who did screen prints of Weg T-Shirts had a Tigers one which had a little imperfection and he couldn't sell it so he gave it to me. Wore it to death and I still have the T-shirt to this day. This also coincided with our glorious run of premierships.  Kevin Sheedy was also a big influence on me being a Tiger supporter as he lived around the corner from us and he used to stop at our place for a swim after his Jog around Caulfield Park. He also did coaching clinics at our school.

In those days there was no stranger danger so from the age of 7 I followed the tigers on my own or with a friend to every ground that I could get to via public transport except Vic Park as Mum knew how Feral Pies supporters would get and wouldn't let me go. Apart from the G, Lake Oval, Junction Oval, Windy Hill, Moorabbin & Arden st I went to the most.

Living Smack bang in the middle of our recruiting zone helped a bit.
Pie nights, footy clinics all attended by tiger players.
Winning flags through that era helped.

Oh and like chuck, claw is irresistible.

It was a curse/blessing bestowed upon me by my father.........I have since passed it on to my son.  i try to pass it on to my mates, their kids, my nieces and nephews.  I was stoked when I got my best mate to switch to us from the Bummers about 5 years ago. I go to games with my dad, my bro, my son and my best mate.......I fell like I'm 10 feet tall game day.

Dad played for North Melbourne back in the late 40s and early 50s so I started life as a North supporter.

Football for me was standing on the terraces at Arden street in the mud amongst the fights and the crowds. Men peeing into beer cans so they didn't lose their spot.

My job (at the age of nine and younger) was to get Dad home in one piece, back in the 60's he drank too much.

Winter 1965 (hence the name) a mate invited me to the MCG to see a game. I sat in the dry (in the old southern stand) and could actually see the football.

I converted and it was 6 months before Dad spoke to me.

Dad turned out to be a great bloke once he gave the booze up but the die had been set and I have been a Tigers supporter since.

 :cheers

Whilst mine didn't land in the Richmond mid 1960's they landed in Prahran and that was Tough Tiger Territory for kids growing up in the late 70's early 80's.

I was also born in 1974 a Premiership Year and loved watching Michael Roach as a kid and ran around with the number 8 on my back back in those days.

We are looking at gathering these stories to turn into a bit of a narrative, could be a web article/video/commercial who knows but the more stories the better.

I guess my story is similar to most - my family comes from the Ovens and Murray...
Maurie Hunter was a cousin - so after he came to Richmond everyone that was born into the family had three things in common:
1. Baptised a Catholic
2. Vote Labour and
3. Barrack for Richmond...
Of course you can always change your religious or political affiliations but if you don't follow the Tigers (all you have left is the orphans picnic)...

Wonder how many of us here fit into those categories. I know I come from a family full of them.
Also its "Labor". nails down a blackboard for me, that one.

x 2.

Except I passed it to my wife, 4 sons and 1 daughter, and have managed to score 3 out of 5 grandkids (the other 2 occasionally do depending which way the wind is blowing) with the other 3.5 still too young to know yet.  A work in progress.....   ;D

Born and bred in Burnley.  Went to Burnley primary school (hasn't existed for 35 years or more). Dad had his business in Swan street. Grew up with Royce Hart's number on my back. They were the most feared side in the competition back then. Ahh the memories!!!!

Same

Whole family are Tigers and I was always called Tiger as a kid (No Fluffy then). Dad still calls me it now.

Had a hand knitted Richmond jumper which they couldnt get off me. Remeber having the poster in my bedroom window (facing to street) of the year we won all three grades. Im not sure of the year now.

Remeber Standing on stacks of "Large Cans" at the G in the standing room only section (ponsford end)

Zoned to Richmond (Oakleigh) and played for the Tigers little league.

Remember steeling a Richmond Council "No Parking" sign in the back streets of Richmond on the way home after either the 73 or 74 grand final (again I cant remember which year exactly).  It was proudly displayed on the bar at home for many years.
So many good memories as a Kid of being a Tiger. Bought my family up the same way, unfortunaly they have never known the success we had back in the 60's and 70's. Its time that is rectified.

I'm pretty sure it was '73 Fluffy, and our unofficial 4ths - Essex Heights U17's - won so we went with a slogan of "4 more in '74" the next year.  Years might have muddied the memory waters but that's what I think it was.

Fozza Hill for me, was 1974 , sick and tired of wearing my school uniform to east burwood footy clinic I wanted a footy jumper for my b day. Only two clubs came to mind RFC and NMFc . With the whole street RFC fans, Y&B kingswood next door and my older bro a tigers fan, the choice was overwhelming  :clapping

Im thinking it was either 67 or  69 as we had moved in 73. Was funny as I used to hate Essex Heights as we used to have to play them. Back in those days I think they used to poach players from other clubs even at that level.

I barrack for Richmond because I was allowed to chose which team I followed.

As I mentioned earlier my Dad barracked for Collingwood but he never forced us to follow them.

Although I don't remember it because I was too young (my Dad passed away when I was 7) Ma Powell told me that my Dad had told us when we were little that we could follow any team we liked but once we decided on a team we had to stick with them, forever, through the good times and the bad.

So that's what I did. In 1972, I decided that my team would be the one with the best jumper in the GF. Choices were Richmond or Carlton, easy choice.

It was the Tigers for me and has been ever since.

I got given my first Richmond jumper in 1973

So I thank my Collingwood supporting Dad, for my love of the Richmond Football Club. I only have one regret and that is I Just wish we had of been able to go to a game together

My old man was also a very liberal free thinking individual, I could barrack for the tigers or be drowned in a bucket of water like some sort of malformed wrongun in medieval village like Frankston.  Luckily, I thought the Tiges were double plus good and made the correct choice.
