Conca barring injury will tear the competition apart

This.

Key position players like Riewoldt and Rance are essential. The importance of a genuine ruck like Maric has been proved over the last two years. And our three game-winning mids in Cotch, Lids and Martin finish off the top six.

To be honest I like Conca but I certainly don't see him becoming our best player, or even getting into the best five, in the coming season. Same will Ellis and Vlastuin. Might end up being A graders if we're lucky, or at least very solid B+ players, but I haven't seen anything to suggest they'll be taking home Jack any time soon IMO. They're young and have shown talent but not consistency. When they're 23+ y/o maybe...

Stiff to miss out: Morris. Seriously the guy did a blanket-job on opposition small forwards all year and was probably only beaten once or twice. Unsung hero for me.

The bottom six players in the selected team will be the most important.

As always its not your best six that determine how far you go but your worst six.  Teams with "good" worst six players tend to make the top 4.

hmm not bad judge.
for me
deledio - best player we have with ball in hand. finding it sometimes is an issue.
cotchin - inside and out hes great but hgis foot skills are ordinary at times. if he wishes to become truly elite he has to get better and he must find that hurt factor when kicking especially at goal.
martin -  a work in progress. ive constanly stated for the last two yrs. like ziebel as his motor improves the more dominant he will become.motor aside he has some areas he needs to work on.
rance - geez do i go there or not.  yes i disagree about him being a genuine kpd. here id place chaplain who also has issues.
riewoldt =  the petulant one. is lazy needs a much bigger motor and he needs to learn to run run run all day. i will be the first to say it but sizwe wise for me hes borderline kpf. and im talking size not height.
what we really need is someone stepping up in at least two areas and forcing these blokes out.
they are a good top 6 and you know what most weeks they have carried the team but as a top 6  is the all round quality really there.anyway me im looking for about a top 10 12 vlastuin ellis i wont say conca because i diont think he will ever be elite or close to it maybe lennon then we may become a power. so far off it atm.

For me it's as follows-

Cotch- our only genuine mid- no one even close to being ready to play his roll.
Jack- our only decent KPF- with not much coming through to take his position
Morris- our only decent small lock down defender
Rance- our best all round tall defender- has got some good help now but I still think he is the fabric of it all down back.
Martin- our only X factor player that could win games off his own boot
Maric- if he can recapture 2012 form, will be a major factor

The way I rated them is to say 'who would be the hardest to replace if they went down with an injury'

How is deledio more replaceable than morris

I accept without Morris we struggle.

Yet players of deledio ilk don't grow on trees. Nor is there a abundance of them on our list.

I'd feel more comfortable with a dea or helbig type replacing Morris than I would the best midfielder outside the best 22, taking deledio spot.

Top 6 Players

Cotchin - best inside player
Lids - best outside player
Jack - most mercurial player
Martin - best switch player
Hampson - will be best tap ruckman and mark around ground
Chaplin - back line general and best reader of the ball

Most irreplaceable

Morris - no other player can shut down a small forward anywhere near as well (remember how small forwards used to carve us up before he was in the team?!)
Vickery - best structural player in the team
Maric - around the ground bullocking ruckwork
King - best defensive forward we have
Ellis - outside runner and finisher
Houli - sets up more forward links plays that any other player.

Lids gets shut down easily. Simple fact.
I'd bet my life on Morris on Grand Final day doing his job, could you say the same about Lids?
Lids is a jet when he gets things on his terms but if you plonk someone on him, and it doesn't have to be Ryan Crowely, he turns to water.
That's how he is more replaceable than Morris.

Deledio got the ball 550 times last season. I would bet most of these occasions he disposed of the ball in a clean and efficient manner. If he was not beaten by taggers on occasion he would be the Total Disposals Leader for the AFL, or at least top five. Personally I would feel more comfortable for a Dea to replace Morris than whoever is next cab of the rank to replace Deledio.

Yet - is Morris 'job' more important than Lids 'job'? I doubt it.

There are times when Morris has been beaten. Heck, Ablett has 'lost' to Daneil Jackson once and no player is really above been beaten by a tagger on occasion.

I respectfully Disagree. I feel Lids still has the potential to improve as a footballer, especially as his team mates grow in ability.

Most irreplaceable

Vickery - best structural player in the team

Irreplaceable coz he's good for our structure ?

" Hey I never touched the ball in my entire career but luckily I was irrepleacable due to our structure so I managed to play 374 games "

TBH I'd have considered trading Lids as part of a deal for pick 1.

Great ball user but at his age the fact that he hasn't learned to shake a tag really bothers me. Tough guy but will never have the strength in the hips that could make him an insider so essentially we have a ball user (not exactly a ball winner) who gets well and truly shut out.

World wouldn't end without him. I'm a massive fan and all but as a midfielder he's more replaceable IMO than say a true KPF like Boyd is touted to be.
