I don't get it, is it meant to be a prediction for 2014 or is it a best players over the past 5 years??

Sandilands, N. Riewoldt, Swan, Pavlich, Hodge...  :huh surprised he didn't squeeze Judd in there.

Motlop is out half the year isn't he??

Not saying these players are crap, but Cotchin will be twice as good as seagull Swan, and Sidebottom ahead of Martin ...

In fairness to the geezer, it's not based on the last 4 years. It's based on what the geezer thinks he saw in 2013. And he must have been really impressed with Sandilands last year...
Title: Re: Mike Sheahan's Top 50
Post by: one-eyed on March 05, 2014, 03:03:12 PM
In the past, Sheahan has said the preseason one is based on who he thinks will come to the fore during the upcoming season. So it's usually a mixture of the usual names he adores who he believes will remain at the top of their game and younger names he's predicting/guessing will step up another level again after good years last year. Mike also often likes to reflect his team predictions as well with the number of reps per club. Obviously he's back on the North and Essendon bandwagon again  :sleep.

Here's the reps per club in his list btw:

Haw  6
Syd  5
Coll   5
Freo  5
Geel  5
Ess   4
NM    3
Bris   2
Carl   2
Port  2
Adel  2
Rich  2
WB   2
WCE 2
GC    1
GWS 1
St K  1
Melb  0

Lids has consistently performed at a high level and averaged mid-20 disposals for the past 6 years but doesn't get a gig yet Ziebell reaches just 21 disposals for the first time in his career (hardly elite stats for a mid) and in a non-finalist side and Mike puts him in  :huh.

Cotch chosen as the 9th best player in the AFL by his peers  :clapping.

9. Trent Cotchin

Richmond
Midfielder
Official AFL Player Rating: 33
Debut: 2008
Games: 110

One of the game’s leading midfielders, Cotchin was below his best for parts of 2013, but built form leading into September and was outstanding in the club’s first final since 2001, finishing with 26 possessions and two goals. He missed just one game (knee injury) and led the club in kicks (365), disposals (571), clearances (118) and contested possessions (259).

Strengths
Is a contested-ball specialist, evades tacklers, balanced, clever and consistent.

Weaknesses
Not as efficient with the ball as he could be.

What the players said
"To be able to go down forward and be dangerous down there too is what sets him apart." - Travis Boak

"He's a player that young footballers should aspire to be like because he's so good on both sides of his body, he's very balanced, very clean and can also go forward and kick goals." - Lenny Hayes

For me the best KPP is Harry Taylor. I watch a few GFC games because the gf and her family go for the cats and they never poo themselves when the ball ends up in the back half when Harry is there. I can't say the same when the ball enters our D50. There's something about Taylor's composure and pretty decent kicking I wish we had in Chaplin and/or Rance. That being said post sorting out the stalker issues last year he has been very servicable to the club.

agree lamington, Taylor, McPharlin I rate as the best KPD's in the game. Thompson and Henderson are quality too. I rate Mackenzie from wce as an up and comer too. Rance is very good but not better than those guys imo

Rance isn't even the best defender at Richmond.

Cotch chosen as the 9th best player in the AFL by his peers  :clapping.

9. Trent Cotchin

It would appear a great deal of the media underrate Cotch. Not the guys he plays against though.

Pretty spot on I reckon Tony.
Taylor and Henderson r good but Taylor gets goals kicked on him coz he's so attacking and Henderson doesn't know whether he's Arthur or Martha coz of the way Carlton use him. McPharlin is really solid but my picks would be Scott Thompson and Josh Gibson. They defend brilliantly and attack well when they can.
Rance is getting up there with those blokes. Needs another solid year.
