New format unveiled for national under-18 titles
Callum Twomey

March 17, 2014
The 2014 championships will see the four division one teams – both Victorian sides, South Australia and Western Australia – feature in a six-round home-and-away fixture.
It is a switch from the structure of previous seasons, which has been a five-round series with cross-division games.
The new program will give players more opportunities to impress, with the Victorian sides kicking off proceedings at Visy Park on May 18.
The format will also allow more players to represent their state, with AFL rules forcing division one teams to play a minimum of 32 players from their squads with a minimum of two games each.
Although the division two sides will play fewer games than recent seasons and won't play against the division one teams, their fixture is balanced against the fact they will play more TAC Cup games this year.

Vic Country 2.0 5.2 8.4 14.5 (89)
Vic Metro 3.4 5.5 9.5 11.8 (74)
GOALS
Vic Country: McCartin 3, Goddard 2, Lamb 2, Drummond 2, Webb, Parish, Lonie, Butler, Dunkley
Vic Metro: Sheridan-Ferrie 4, Wright 2, Langdon, Ahern, Ellis, Moore, Pittonet
BEST
Vic Country: Drummond, Marchbank, Marshall, Skinner, Tucker, Lonie
Vic Metro: Brayshaw, McLaren, De Goey, Castagna, Duggan, Pittonet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TALL pair Patrick McCartin and Hugh Goddard combined for five goals to lead Vic Country to a 15-point win over Vic Metro to open the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
In the first game of the national carnival, Vic Country overcame a slow start to win 14.5 (89) to 11.8 (74) at Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham.
McCartin kicked the first goal of the game after a strong mark on the lead and finished with three majors, while Goddard kicked two and competed well throughout the contest.
The duo is among a handful of exciting key position prospects who are considered first-round draft prospects.
Angus Brayshaw was Metro's best player and underlined his standing as one of the best midfielders in the pool with 32 disposals and four clearances, while Rory Sheridan-Ferrie kicked four goals.
Darcy Tucker and Darcy Parish, too young for this year's draft, were two of Vic Country's best players in the win, gathering 21 disposals and 19 disposals respectively.
Caleb Marchbank impressed with 20 disposals, while Jordan Cunico showed some dash with 18 touches through the midfield and wings for Country, who did not win a division one game in 2013.
Lukas Webb used the ball well, 19-year-old Nathan Drummond gave some run and kicked two goals and, although Tom Lamb was quiet early, he kicked two important final-quarter goals to help his side over the line.
Although Vic Metro's tall forwards were considered a threat, Country's defenders restricted them to little influence.
Collingwood father-son prospect Darcy Moore had just six disposals and possible No.1 pick Peter Wright kicked two goals, but also spent some time in the ruck.
Sean McLaren battled hard in his duel with Goddard, while Jayden Laverde took the game on from half-back and was one of Metro's best players with 22 disposals, six marks and five rebound-50s.
Matt Goodyear (24 disposals) and Kyle Langford (21), two players on the radar of AFL clubs, also made solid contributions through the midfield.
Highly rated Metro forward Christian Petracca was rested for the clash.
Division one of the national carnival continues next weekend, when Western Australia travels to AAMI Stadium to take on South Australia.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIKELY top-five 2015 draft choice Ryan Burton has starred with five goals in South Australia's 31-point win over Western Australia at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Croweaters kicked off their Under-18 title defence in style, establishing their dominance from the outset and then holding on to run out 14.8 (92) to 8.13 (61) winners in round one of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
South Australia's slick ball movement and aggressive running were critical elements in the victory, as a number of the state's prospects shone.
None more so than Burton, a bottom-aged AFL Academy prospect, who took 10 marks as a lead up forward to further enhance his reputation as one of next year's outstanding draft prospects.
Standing at 191cm, Burton's straight-kicking from all angles was a highlight for the Croweaters, while Jake Johansen established his side's midfield dominance with 30 well-earned disposals.
West Australian Clem Smith did his best to keep his side within reach, displaying pace and a strong attack on the ball in his 23 touches.
Smith is regarded as one of Western Australia's key draft choices this season.
He received able support from Swan Districts WAFL on-ball prospect Connor Blakely, who helped himself to 26 disposals, nine clearances and seven inside 50s.
Blakely has averaged 18 disposals in seven senior games at WAFL level this season and he carried that form into Saturday's game.
South Australian Sam Durdin, who at 197cm, is also considered a likely top-five draft selection this year was prominent in the ruck.

Top Vic Metro draft prospect runs amok in huge win over WA
Travis King

May 31, 2014 7:26 PM
Western Australia 2.4 2.9 2.9 2.11 (23)
Victoria Metro 4.4 6.10 10.16 15.20 (110)
GOALS
Western Australia: Pickett, Cripps
Victorian Metro: Langdon 2, Ahern 2, Petracca 2, Payne 2, Cavka, Ellis, Wilkinson, Brayshaw, Maynard, McKenzie, Wright
BEST
Western Australia: Waterman, Frampton, Hardisty, Giblett, Walsh, Hancock
Victoria: Cavka, Ahern, Ellis, Tester, Langford, Langdon, Petracca
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HIGHLY-RATED draft prospect Christian Petracca starred as Victoria Metro pounded Western Australia by 87 points in round two of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division one competition on Saturday.
Metro rebounded from its loss to Victoria Country with a dominant 15.20 (110) to 2.11 (23) triumph at Medibank Stadium in Perth.
A host of top Metro prospects played influential roles in the big win, while potential father/son selection Alec Waterman racked up 35 touches for WA.
But the son of West Coast dual-premiership player Chris had little help.
Metro ran amok and led at every change, with Eastern Ranges' Petracca collecting 27 disposals and booting 2.1 in his first game of the championships.
The powerful and tough 186cm midfielder/forward has been touted as a first-round prospect at this year's NAB AFL Draft.
Calder's Damien Cavka boosted his draft prospects with a best-on-ground performance for Metro.
The 184cm Cannon gathered 22 touches, kicked a goal and laid seven tackles and is sure to have recruiters talking.
His TAC Cup teammate Paul Ahern also ran rampant through the midfield with 23 touches – including 12 contested – and two majors.
Ahern's pace and ball-use lit up Medibank Stadium and helped set up the massive win.
Western Jets left-footer Corey Ellis (21 disposals, 6 inside 50s), Calder's Touk Miller (22 disposals, eight tackles) and Tom Wilkinson (30 disposals, six clearances) also impressed.
Top midfield prospect Angus Brayshaw improved after a quiet first half to finish with 15 disposals.
Two 190cm backmen – Sandringham's Edward Vickers-Willis and Northern Knights' Kyle Langford - were brick walls in defence for Metro.
For WA, Waterman never stopped fighting against the Metro tide.
The left-footer has been compared to Eagle Matt Priddis and was clearly his team's best player with 35 touches – with a huge 17 contested – and 10 clearances.
Claremont's Jared Hardisty (26 disposals) and captain Brad Walsh (24 disposals) also tried hard for WA through midfield.
Clem Smith put together back-to-back games of more than 20 touches.
Billy Frampton, a 199cm potential draftee from South Fremantle, was one of WA's better players, along with East Perth's Clayton Giblett and Peel's Ben Hancock.
Exciting South Fremantle youngster Jarrod Pickett and East Fremantle's Jack Cripps were the Sandgropers' only goalkickers.
The NAB AFL Under-18 Championships continue on Sunday when the two unbeaten teams South Australia and Victoria Country face-off at AAMI Stadium.

SA wins at a Stretch over Vic Country
Ben Collins
afl.com.au
June 1, 2014 4:58 PM
South Australia 1.4 4.7 6.15 9.21 (75)
Victoria Country 5.2 6.4 6.4 8.5 (53)
GOALS
South Australia: Francis 2, Johansen, Hamilton, Gore, Gregson, Burton, Press, Durdin
Victorian Country: Lamb, Dunkley, Lonie, Webb, Butler, Schache, Goddard, Skinner
BEST
South Australia: Ramsey, Johansen, Stretch, Hamilton, Spurling, Wigg, Hayes
Victoria Country: Evans, Mathieson, Miles, Tucker, Parish, Butler
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE SON of a gun has proved influential in undefeated South Australia's 22-point win over Victoria Country at AAMI Stadium in round two of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division one competition on Sunday.
Glenelg's Billy Stretch, the son of former Melbourne and Fitzroy wingman Steven Stretch, gathered an equal-team high 24 disposals and delivered at 75 per cent efficiency, to pilot the Croweaters to an impressive come-from-behind victory.
Stretch started at half-back before moving to a wing and improved as the game wore on with his composure and neat ball use.
In cold, slippery conditions, SA faced a 22-point deficit at quarter-time but thereafter outscored Vic Country 8.17 to just 3.3. They kept the visitors to just 1.2 in the middle two quarters.
SA skipper Jake Johansen, all 171cm and 63kg of him, again set a strong example for his teammates with 24 touches (including a game-high 19 kicks), seven clearances, six tackles and a goal.
Seventeen-year-old West Adelaide utility Aaron Francis overcame a slow start to have a significant impact on proceedings. After being well beaten by highly rated forward Tom Lamb in the first half, Francis responded well to a half-time spray and a shift to attack, finishing with two goals and two contested marks.
Fellow forwards Ryan Burton and Jackson Press spoiled their good work with wasteful tallies of 1.4 and 1.3 respectively.
SA's 197cm ruckman Sam Durdin continued to show promising signs in his comeback from thumb surgery, regaining some touch and kicking a goal.
Vic Country fielded eight 17-year-olds, including inside midfielder Rhys Mathieson – the second-youngest player afield – who amassed a game-high 32 possessions (13 contested) and eight clearances.
Strong-bodied midfielder Billy Evans had 28 touches, including game-high tallies of contested possessions (16) and clearances (11).
Possible top-10 draft pick Lamb showed glimpses of his potential as a tall forward/midfielder with 20 possessions (10 contested) and 1.1.
He was also reported for striking in the third term.
Tall defender Caleb Marchbank also did his draft chances no harm with a sound performance.
The visitors sorely missed two key players – key forward and potential top-five draft pick Patrick McCartin was sidelined with a minor quad injury sustained in a school match, and tough 19-year-old midfielder Nathan Drummond has a hamstring problem.

MELBOURNE father-son prospect Billy Stretch was among a host of Croweaters who boosted their chances at November's NAB AFL Draft in South Australia's come-from-behind win over Western Australia.
The son of former Demon (164 games) and Fitzroy (25 games) player, Steven Stretch, starred on a wing and had good support from SA captain Jake Johansen and likely top-five draft pick Sam Durdin.
WA's most influential player was Jarrod Pickett, who kicked three goals in round three of the NAB AFL under-18s Championships at Medibank Stadium.
Western Australia came into the match rank underdogs after an abysmal effort in an 87-point loss to Vic Metro last round.
But the home side led for most of the match before being overrun by five points, with SA keeping its perfect record intact.
Johansen led all comers with 32 disposals, seven clearances, 10 inside 50s and two goals, continuing his strong form at the championships.
Durdin, who at 197cm is one of this draft's elite talls, shone with 17 touches and 11 hit-outs.
Stretch gathered 19 touches – eight contested – and pumped the ball inside 50m five times.
Jackson Press booted 3.2 for the visitors from 14 disposals.
Pickett booted three late goals for WA to keep the Sandgropers in the hunt and had 21 disposals – 10 contested – with seven inside 50s.
Rated as one of WA's best draft hopes, Pickett received good support from Tyler Keitel, who also kicked three majors from 13 touches and was a strong marking target.
Defender Dylan Winton collected the most disposals for WA with 22, while Clayton Giblett was named the home side's best after 13 touches and four marks.
Potential West Coast father-son draftee Alec Waterman was held relatively quiet with 16 disposals.
Western Australia remains winless after three matches.
The championships continue when Vic Country faces Vic Metro at Simonds Stadium at 11am on Sunday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AT THE halfway point of the division one NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, a few things have become clear.
The top end of the draft is still difficult to rank, there is plenty of depth after that, and clubs will head to November's draft knowing they can find players. And, from a team perspective, Vic Country is much improved.
After failing to win a division one game last year, Country has already notched two in the opening three rounds of this national carnival.
Both have been against rivals Vic Metro, the latest coming on Sunday with a 44-point drubbing at Simonds Stadium, 12.9 (81) to 4.13 (37).
The new home and away format of this year's championships will see most players sit out at least one game, and that was the case for several highly-rated prospects for both sides this weekend.
Angus Brayshaw, Peter Wright and Corey Ellis were among those for Metro, while Country was without Patrick McCartin (quad) and Tom Lamb (groin) as they overcame small niggles.
It meant there were opportunities for others to step up and for the winners there were plenty who did, starting in the midfield.
Joe Maishman, the cousin of Western Bulldogs' midfielder Mitch Wallis, led the way. With 29 disposals, six marks and seven inside-50 entries, Maishman tucked the ball under his arm and ran with it on the wing.
Nick Dixon also gathered 29 disposals and was strong at the clearances, while Sydney Swans' father-son prospect Josh Dunkley continued his consistent championships despite not being eligible for the draft until 2015.
When a virus hit defender Jacob Weitering early in the game and plans to use Daniel Capiron as a forward went belly-up, Capiron responded and gathered 25 disposals and eight marks in an important role.
"We'd set him all weekend to go forward and literally at the last minute had to go back," said Country coach Mark Ellis. "He played his best game."
Zaine Cordy, who can join the Western Bulldogs as a father-son prospect as the son of 124-gamer Brian, organised that defensive group and played well on Darcy Moore, Dear and whichever tall Metro forward was there to stop.
Aaron Wilson kicked four goals for Country and the tenacious Daniel Butler booted two, while 174cm Jack Lonie collected 25 disposals, took eight marks and kicked two goals in an exciting and energetic showing.
"If [Lonie] keeps up the performances that he's had and the effort that he's brought to the table, he can't be discounted," Ellis said.
"We've got a few more players who we'll bring in next week and we're mindful of rotating the boys through and giving them an opportunity because today showed if you get that, who knows what you can do?"
Caleb Marchbank worked hard at the ball in attack, while Dan Howe, who was overlooked at last year's NAB AFL Draft, showed his versatility across half-back with 23 disposals.
Metro, held goalless in the second half, was led by its captain for the day, Christian Petracca.
Following his excellent 27-disposal effort last week against Western Australia, Petracca started in the centre square and was busy in the midfield with 31 possessions, seven marks and four clearances.
Powerful and strong, he makes an impact when around the ball and continues to firm as one of the better players in this year's draft pool.
Ed Vickers-Willis had 25 disposals, while Jayden Laverde, a nice-moving half-back who knows where and when to run, had 23 touches and nine marks.
Jordan De Goey showed some class in the second half and the physical Brayden Maynard worked hard. Another father-son prospect, Dear, kicked a goal and showed some impressive signs in the tall forward's first game of the championships.
Dear, son of Hawthorn Norm Smith medallist Paul, suffered a bad head clash in the TAC Cup the week before the carnival which delayed his Metro debut.

AS AFL clubs wonder whether Peter Wright is a ruckman or forward, the likely early draft pick showed he can be both in Vic Metro's 14-point win over South Australia on Saturday.
In his best game so far of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, the 203cm highly-rated prospect kicked three goals from 16 disposals, pulled in 10 marks and had 29-hit-outs in Metro's 13.8 (86) to 10.12 (72) win at AAMI Stadium.
Wright is among a handful of players vying to be the No.1 pick in this year's NAB AFL Draft, in one of the most open top-ends in recent years.
Although he held a significant height advantage over South Australia's 197cm ruckman Sam Durdin, Wright was able to impact the play around the ground and was dangerous when the ball was sent his way in the forward line.
At his feet was Ed Langdon, the younger brother of first-year Collingwood defender Tom, who kicked four goals in what was South Australia's first defeat of the carnival.
The 182cm Metro small forward finished with 13 disposals and roved packs, converted long shots and created other chances for his side in a busy display.
Others were just as important for Metro. Angus Brayshaw, back from being rested last game, had 25 disposals (11 contested, five clearances) to reaffirm his position as one of the top midfielders in the draft.
Christian Petracca was perhaps more effective, using his power and speed to push through the wings and send the ball long.
Following his 27 and 31-possession games over the past two weeks, Petracca collected 26 (including seven clearances and six inside 50s) against South Australia, proving he can influence games up the ground as much as close to goal.
Jordan De Goey also continued his attacking form. De Goey, who some clubs view as a top-15 pick, played mainly across half-back and helped set up the play.
The Oakleigh Charger is no-fuss: he cleans up in defence, gets through traffic and disposes of the ball with little trouble.
Metro set up an advantage in the first term and looked likely to run away with the game before South Australia was sparked by small forward Josh Hone.
Active and showing the ability to finish, Hone finished with three goals from 13 disposals.
Long-kicking left-footer Harrison Wigg was among South Australia's best, gathering 23 disposals.
Wigg is a compact and tidy player with a damaging kick, most evident in his set-shot goal from outside 50 in the second term.
Alex Neal-Bullen had 19 disposals (13 contested) through the midfield, and despite South Australia's surge in the final term, Metro held on for the impressive interstate win.

Quick, smart, skilled: Lonie stars for Vic Country

Western Australia: Blakely, Hardisty, Winton, Watson, Dent, Smith
Vic Country: Lonie, Dixon, Parish, Tucker, White, Nelson, Cunico
-------------------------------------------------------------------
JACK Lonie might be small but he is also a lot of other things.
Quick, smart, skillful and with a goal sense matched by few others in this draft, the Vic Country forward starred in his side's 62-point thrashing of Western Australia on Sunday.
The 174cm prospect kicked four goals from 24 disposals in his side's 14.13 (97) to 5.5 (35) win at Fremantle Oval, which strengthened its position as it fights for this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division one title.
The cousin of former AFL players Nathan and Ryan continued his excellent carnival with another strong showing.
His impact was more than immediately met the eye, too, with 15 score involvements.
"He does everything that is required of him from a team point of view, and he gets the ball," said Country coach Mark Ellis.
"He's lively, he's got some energy about him, he's good overhead and he can kick goals. He's been terrific.
"He's just an infectious sort of kid who desperately wants to do well."
Vic Country established its dominance in the first term, opening a 29-point lead at quarter-time. It never relented, extending its lead at every change.
Geelong Falcons pair Nick Dixon (28 disposals) and Darcy Parish (21) led the midfield, with bottom-aged Parish collecting eight clearances and kicking a goal.
Billy Evans (21), Dan Howe (21) and Joe Maishman (19) were others to provide plenty of run, while Jordan Cunico gathered 18 disposals in the first half and was the best player on the ground until a broken nose early in the third term ended his day.
"Before that he was starting to do the things we know he's capable of doing," Ellis said. "It's only a nose, he'll be right."
Everywhere on the ground Country had winners. Half-back Darcy Tucker kept exciting West Australian Jarrod Pickett quiet, while Hugh Goddard moved to defence to shut down tall forward Tyler Keitel.
Tom Lamb also presented well playing mainly as a deep forward option before moving up the field, finishing with 20 disposals.
But where Country had contributors everywhere, the home team struggled for standouts.
Strong-moving midfielder Connor Blakely returned from a hamstring injury to gather 25 disposals and six clearances, while Jared Hardisty tried hard with 24.
Francis Watson, who turns 19 later this year, had 16 disposals but showed some flair in the air, leaping for marks as a flanker at both ends.
While Western Australia remains winless after four rounds of the national championships, if Vic Country wins its final two games against South Australia (June 27) and Western Australia (July 2) it will claim the division one crown.
"This game, if you prepare well and do the right things, good things can happen," Ellis said.
"We've said that all along. We just the play the game and we know if we play it well you get what you deserve."
Next weekend the division two sides take the stage for the first time this season, with a double-header at Blacktown on Saturday.
Tasmania will take on Queensland before NSW-ACT plays Northern Territory.

ISAAC Heeney started his NAB AFL Under-18 Championships exactly as expected, gathering 32 disposals in New South Wales-ACT's strong 81-point win over Northern Territory.
The midfielder, who is tied to the Sydney Swans under the zone academy program, showed why most recruiters see him as a first-round prospect with a standout performance.
Of his possession tally, 19 came to half-time when the game was up for grabs, and he finished with four clearances and six marks in the Rams' 20.14 (134) to 8.5 (53) win at Blacktown on Saturday.
In their opening game of the division two carnival, the Rams were clearly the better side throughout the day apart from the second term, where things were relatively even with Northern Territory booting five goals.
But that was where it ended, with Territory held to just one goal after half-time as the Rams kicked 10 majors.
Midfielder Jack Steele was best afield, picking up 32 disposals, seven clearances, 10 marks and three goals in a terrific display.
After a knee injury ruined his 2013 campaign – when he was draft eligible – Steele has enjoyed a consistent season where he has made a knack of kicking goals, collecting big numbers and showing some marking strength overhead.
196cm ruckman Isaac Muller impressed with 36 hit-outs, while Tyler Roos, the son of Paul, played on the wing and found 22 disposals and a goal, offering plenty of drive. Roos is eligible to join the Brisbane Lions under the father-son rule.
Callum Mills, a talented, tough and composed midfielder, continued his excellent season with 25 disposals and two goals.
Mills is not eligible for the NAB AFL Draft until next year but even that appears something of a formality, given he can join the Sydney Swans under the academy system.
Abraham Ankers was Territory's best, finding 36 touches in a dogged display. Ankers missed out on being picked last season but the 173cm prospect again showed he can collect touches with his team under pressure.
Michael Tilmouth-Turner and Marcus Hamilton (16 disposals, two goals) tried hard, while Zane Carter picked up 16 disposals.
The Rams' win followed a comfortable victory for Queensland, which is likely to set up a division two 'Grand Final' between the sides in round three of the championships at Etihad Stadium on July 2.

YOUNG Queenslander Ben Keays stamped himself as a player to watch after an exciting four-goal performance against Tasmania at Bankstown on Saturday morning.
Queensland were comfortable 29-point winners of first division-two game of the 2014 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, giving new coach Adrian Fletcher his first win.
Queensland had more contributors than Tasmania and led from start to finish.
Matt Hammelmann took 12 marks and kicked four goals, and defender Harris Andrews, who rebounded well, was a solid contributor.
Tasmanians Caleb Hislop, with 27 disposals, and Tim Jones with 33,m battled hard but they could not overcome Queensland's pressure.
At siren time, Keays, a bottom-age player from Morningside who was Queensland's best player in last year's under-16 championships, had set tongues wagging.
He began the second half with an exciting banana goal and repeated the dose early in the final quarter. Not only did he finish well, but he won plenty of disposals through the midfield.
Highly rated Queenslander Lachie Weller (15 disposals) was relatively quiet while Liam Dawson (18 disposals) did enough without dominating.
Queensland plays Northern Territory at Visy Park next Saturday, while Tasmania takes on NSW/ACT at the same venue.

POTENTIAL Collingwood father-son draftee Darcy Moore confirmed his ranking as a high-end draft choice, inspiring Vic Metro with four goals in its 58-point drubbing of Western Australia at Simonds Stadium on Friday.
The 199cm Oakleigh Charger, son of former Pies captain and dual Brownlow medallist Peter, starred in Metro's 16.10 (106) to 7.6 (48) round five win of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division one competition.
It was Metro's third win from five starts, while Western Australia remains winless after five matches.
Moore proved he can be a valuable commodity up forward, collecting 16 possessions (12 contested), four inside-50s and having six score involvements.
Midfielder Paul Ahern, who stands at 181cm, was in the thick of the action all day, showing off his electrifying pace and class across half-forward, working into the space extremely well to finish the match with 22 disposals, six inside-50s and three majors.
Sandringham Dragons midfielder Angus Brayshaw stamped his authority on the match with 23 touches (eight contested), five clearances, six inside-50s and one goal, as well as amassing a staggering 690 metres gained.
Another player who further enhanced his draft prospects was Damien Cavka, whose strong work rate, endurance and capacity to apply enormous defensive pressure was evident throughout the game, amassing 21 disposals and five inside-50s.
Big man and potential No. 1 pick Peter Wright confirmed his sublime talents, dominating the ruck duels in the first half with 20 hit-outs before pushing forward in the second half.
Christian Petracca maintained his rich vein of form, showing attributes of a ready-made AFL footballer. The midfielder-forward exploded in the second half, gathering a game-high 24 touches rolling through the middle.
Petracca's decision-making and skill execution was on display all game – particularly when performed under pressure – as was his capacity to win the contested ball.
For Western Australia, Alec Waterman, son of dual premiership West Coast Eagle Chris, was among his side's best with a team-high 18 touches, while Aiden Anderson impressed with three goals.
The WA defenders were kept on their toes all afternoon, but also performed their roles with composure in patches, taking several well-timed marks and offering strong rebound from defensive 50.
Dylan Winton stood tall under constant pressure, collecting 15 touches from 11 kicks.
Other major ball winners were Ryan Lim and Brad Walsh with 17 possessions apiece, while Jarrod Garlett looked dangerous in patches with 12 kicks and one goal.
Forward livewire Jarrod Pickett – one of the most exciting players in the pool courtesy of his dazzling skills and blistering pace – rose to the challenge early, finishing with 12 touches and a goal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
THE STOCKS of Caleb Daniel have risen after the small forward starred in South Australia's 63-point demolition of Vic Country at Simonds Stadium on Friday.
The South Adelaide livewire, who stands at 167cm and weighs 66kg, dominated in a clear best-on-ground performance, amassing 27 disposals, eight tackles, three goals and 11 score involvements.
South Australia's 12.11 (83) to 2.8 (20) triumph was its fourth win for the carnival, moving one game clear of Vic Country after round five of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division one competition.
Daniel helped his side burst out of the blocks in the first term, gathering eight possessions at 100 percent efficiency, as well as three tackles, four score involvements and one goal.
Vic Country, held goalless in the opening half, kicked its first major at the 12-minute mark of the second term, courtesy of Patrick McCartin.
Potential Melbourne father-son prospect Billy Stretch impressed with 18 touches for SA.
The 179cm midfielder, son of former Melbourne and Fitzroy player Steven Stretch, was pivotal across the wing, with his work rate and ability to bring his teammates into the match clear from the outset.
He was well complemented by skipper Jake Johansen – likened to North Melbourne's Brent Harvey – who gathered 15 possessions in a solid performance.
SA prospect Sam Durdin, who stands at 197cm, lined up on Country's Hugh Goddard at centre half-forward in an intriguing match-up, although neither did much in the opening term with just one touch apiece.
At half-time, Durdin had five touches and one mark, while Goddard – younger cousin of Essendon's Brendon – had four disposals and three marks.
Another player who contributed across half-back was Harrison Wigg, who possesses a booming, accurate left-foot kick and an ability to break the lines.
Declan Hamilton, the nephew of Andrew and Darren Jarman, looked composed for SA, making smart decisions and executing his 14 disposals well.
On-baller Alex Neal-Bullen, likened to St Kilda's Lenny Hayes, was damaging around the stoppages, gathering 16 touches.
Versatile medium forward James Rose stood out with his penetrating kicking action, kicking two goals from 11 possessions.
In an afternoon where there weren't too many positives for Country, the performance of inside midfielder Teia Miles was encouraging with 19 touches and five marks.
Bottom-aged player Rhys Mathieson, ineligible for this year's draft, showed promising signs for the future, collecting 17 possessions, six clearances and three inside 50s respectively.
Defender Caleb Marchbank offered strong rebound from the defensive 50 as well as being the third man up on occasions, while half-back flanker Daniel Capiron collected 14 possessions in a defence that was under constant pressure.
Fellow backman and potential father-son prospect Zaine Cordy, son of Western Bulldog Brian, gathered 11 touches.
In the centre, Billy Evans was kept relatively quiet, finishing with five touches, along with small half-forward Jack Lonie – cousin of former AFL players Ryan and Nathan Lonie – with seven touches.

LAST year, Abe Davis showed his talents as a strong-marking, creative defender. Two games into this year's division two NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, Davis is showing plenty of encouraging signs at the other end of the ground.
Click here for full coverage of the Under-18 Championships
The 193cm Davis kicked two goals and had 15 disposals in New South Wales-ACT's nine-point win over Tasmania on Saturday at Windy Hill, and was influential in setting up a few more.
In a tight-fought win – the Rams took the points 8.9 (57) to 7.6 (48) – Davis presented well and kicked nicely. Tied to the Sydney Swans through their zone academy, some recruiters predict Davis could cost the club its second-round NAB AFL Draft selection.
The Rams' win means the division two title will be decided when they meet Queensland, also unbeaten, at Etihad Stadium this Wednesday afternoon.
There were many other contributors for the Rams, with ruckman Isaac Muller continuing his strong form. The 196cm big man from North Albury was one of his side's best, gathering 17 disposals and 33 hit-outs in a dominant display.
He fed a bevy of midfielders who fought hard in game that was at times fiery, with Jacob Hopper (21 touches, seven clearances) Isaac Heeney (18 disposals) and Callum Mills (17) impressive.
Tyler Roos also had 18 disposals, with the possible Brisbane Lions' father-son selection collecting five clearances and offering strong drive through the wings.
Though the Rams were well-fancied heading into the clash, and are expected to have a strong draft crop this year, Tasmania fought hard all day.
It was 17-year-old forward Nick Dodge, not eligible for the draft until next year, who stood up for Tasmania, kicking five goals and making the most of his chances.
Tim Jones, a hard-working and consistent midfielder, found 26 disposals, while Josh McGuinness had another busy day across half-back with 19 touches.

LACHIE Weller won the ball outside the forward 50, burst through traffic, steadied and kicked the goal.
In a flash, the Queenslander showed why he sits in the top group of midfielders in this year's draft, gathering it cleanly, cutting past players with speed, and having the class to finish.
It summed up the difference between Queensland and Northern Territory, in its 10.12 (72) to 6.6 (42) win at Windy Hill on Saturday.
Weller, the younger brother of St Kilda's Mav, finished with 25 disposals (11 contested), six tackles, four clearances and two goals in a clear best-on-ground display as his team posted its second win of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
In blustery conditions Queensland broke to an early lead and although Northern Territory hung in the game, they never seriously challenged.
Bottom-aged midfielder Ben Keays continued his impressive carnival with 20 disposals and a goal for Queensland, while tall forwards Matt Uebergang, Brayden Preuss and Matt Hammelmann each kicked two goals.
Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds and Cameron Stevenson each collected 16 disposals.
The Territory was once again served well by dogged midfielder Abraham Ankers, who had 28 disposals and six inside-50 entries. Ankers also booted two goals and had plenty of influence around the ball.
Another over-aged player, Willy Rioli, had an impact, kicking three classy goals from seven touches in the forward half, while Victorian-based ruckman Duom Dawam played well with 13 disposals, 16 hit-outs and a goal.

ISAAC Heeney did as he has done all year, powering through the midfield to help New South Wales/ACT claim the division two Under-18s title with a 13-point win over Queensland.
Heeney, an explosive, strong and competitive midfielder, gathered 21 touches and helped turn the game his side's way in the second and third terms as they ran out 8.10 (58) to 6.9 (45) victors at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old's consistent NAB AFL Under-18 Championships – he averaged 24 disposals across the three games – saw him win the Harrison Medal as the best player of division two, and underlined why the Sydney Swans will need to pay top price for the academy recruit.
After a tight first term, it was the Rams' midfielders who gave their side the edge, with Tyler Roos (20 disposals) and Jack Steele (16 and two goals) also impressing.
Queensland was wasteful early but continued to fight to the end of the game, with Matt Hammelmann continuing his impressive championships in attack. Hammelmann took five marks but couldn't convert his chances, ending with 1.3.
Captain Darcy Cameron-Reeves was busy with 23 disposals, while bottom-aged midfielder Ben Keays showed he will be a player to watch next year when eligible for the draft, finishing with 21 disposals and two quality goals.
This game presented an interesting situation for the countless recruiters in the crowd, with most of the standout players already tied to clubs under the northern clubs' academy system.
Of the winning Rams team, Heeney, athletic forward Abe Davis and hard-working midfielder Jordan Foote are with the Swans, while Steele, mobile forwards Jeremy Finlayson (17 disposals) and Nick Coughlan, and wingman Liam Griffiths are members of the Greater Western Sydney academy.
Tall trio Hammelmann, Matthew Uebergang, Nick Jackson and the injured Liam Dawson – who will miss four-to-six weeks with a fractured scapula – are among the prospects already with the Brisbane Lions academy.
Other clubs can bid for the players at October's father-son and academy bidding meeting, and as the northern clubs won't use all of their selections on their academy players, it means some may fall through the NAB AFL Draft.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
WESTERN Australia clinched its first win of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in style, with a late Clem Smith goal giving it a two-point triumph over Vic Country.
Vic Country looked far too strong early in the game and broke out to a 31-point lead midway through the second term.
But instead of falling away like they had done previously throughout the championships, the West Australians responded to storm home, winning 9.13 (67) to 10.5 (65) at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Smith's goal with three minutes to play capped an eventful day for the powerful prospect.
Having moved from the back pocket to be stationed deep in attack, Smith was physical and gave away five free kicks.
But he imposed himself on the contest and made things happen around him, evident in his snap around the body from close range, which broke the state's five-game losing streak.
Connor Blakely, a big, tall and strong midfielder who pushes through contests, picked up 23 disposals, eight clearances and six tackles to close his strong championships for WA, while Tyler Keitel played well through defence with 19 touches and six rebounds.
The lively Jarrod Pickett came into the game later, and kicked an important goal in the third term. Taller options Aidan Anderson, Adam Creeper and Jack Cripps all chimed in with two goals, while at the other end Clayton Giblett did a solid defensive job on Vic Country forward Paddy McCartin.
Lukas Webb was a standout for Vic Country, who ended their championships with two disappointing defeats.
If Webb wasn't kicking goals, he was setting them up. The left-footer booted four of his own in a breakout game, and helped others to opportunities as well.
Twice he delivered the pass lace-out to McCartin and whenever Webb had the ball he was clean and unrushed, able to size up his options and make the right call.
Webb gathered 16 disposals and six marks and had plenty of influence, while Jordan Cunico and Rhys Mathieson also finished with 16.
Western Australia's win means the division one title will be decided on Thursday when South Australia and Vic Metro face off at Simonds Stadium.
Metro will need to win by approximately three goals to jump ahead of South Australia on percentage.

TASMANIA has ended the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division two competition on a high with a 40-point win over Northern Territory at Simonds Stadium on Thursday.
Inside midfielder Tim Jones was a stand out, consistently collecting possessions with great speed, in his side’s 15.5 (95) to 8.7 (55) triumph.
The 181cm Jones gathered 21 touches in the first half, before finishing the match with a whopping 34 possessions in the shortened format.
Tasmania finished the three-game carnival with one win, while Territory remained winless.
Over-aged player Josh Fox looked dangerous in the ruck, taking several well-timed contested marks inside forward 50.
The 19-year-old key forward-ruckman, who stands at 197cm, amassed 25 possessions, 20 hit-outs, nine marks and a goal.
Fellow over-ager Josh McGuinness, a 189cm rebounding defender, played a pivotal role linking up on the counter attack from half-back for 26 disposals.
Nick Dodge, a 17-year-old forward who isn’t eligible in this year’s draft, showed he could be an attractive future proposition, booting two majors.
Dakota Bannister seized his opportunities up forward, bagging a game-high four goals.
Caleb Hislop, who missed the majority of last season after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction at the end of 2012, made an impact through the midfield, finishing with 20 disposals and five tackles.
Bottom-aged player Logan Reynolds, another who is ineligible for this year’s draft, showed encouraging signs across half-back and through the midfield, collecting 12 possessions.
Fellow bottom-ager, Jordan Hayden, showed plenty of class with an elite mix of speed and endurance, finishing with 22 touches and seven inside-50s.
For Northern Territory, over-aged player Abraham Ankers won his own ball in a determined display, collecting 16 touches and one goal in a team under constant pressure.
The small midfielder, who stands at 173cm, may be short in stature, but is tough and hard at the ball with a strong work ethic.
Medium defender Errin Wasley-Black, who missed out on being drafted last year, was a solid contributor across half-back with his penetrating left-foot kick, finishing with a team-high 20 touches.
Sam Godden showed composure with 17 disposals in a defence that was under constant pressure, while Michael Tilmouth-Turner was kept quiet for six possessions.
Marcus Hamilton (15 disposals) looked dangerous up forward for Territory with three majors, while Zane Carter was another who tried hard for 15 possessions.
Michaelis McMasters (eight touches) displayed his electric burst of speed, as well as a long penetrating kick inside the forward line.
Victorian-based ruckman Duom Dawam, who plays for the Western Jets, showed off his strong leap for the Territory, but was kept relatively quiet for 20 hit-outs and three touches.
Willy Rioli, a cousin of Hawthorn’s Cyril, missed the game due to a calf strain.

SOUTH Australia has claimed back-to-back NAB AFL Under-18 division one championships, defeating Vic Metro in a nine-point thriller at Simonds Stadium on Thursday.

The Croweaters’ 11.13 (79) to 10.10 (70) triumph was their fifth victory of the carnival from six starts, while Vic Metro ended the championships with three wins along with Vic Country.
On the back of his 27 touches against Vic Country last Friday, Caleb Daniel was again influential, providing his team with genuine speed and elusiveness.
The South Adelaide livewire, who stands at 167cm, collected 21 possessions at 86 percent efficiency, four inside-50s, five tackles, three goals and eight score involvements.
Daniel also provided strong rebound across half-back and through the midfield as he propelled his team into attack and looked composed under pressure all game.

Dean Gore won his own ball and proved he can have an impact going forward, courtesy of his strong frame and terrific hands, finishing with 21 disposals (11 contested).
The inside midfielder, who stands at 183cm and weighs 86kg, was superb at the stoppages and possessed an uncanny ability to keep his feet, with eight clearances, eight inside-50s and seven score involvements.
Another player who impressed for the Croweaters was potential Melbourne father-son recruit Billy Stretch, son of Steven (164 games for the Demons), who proved he’ll be a valuable commodity at AFL level.
Stretch provided plenty of run through the wings with his excellent decision-making abilities, collecting 16 disposals.
SA’s quick transition from defence into its attacking end proved the difference, with Alex Neal-Bullen playing his best game of the carnival, gathering a game-high 23 possessions (13 contested), four clearances and five tackles.
James Rose presented well at the contests all match and kicked the sealer from an accurate set shot at goal in the final minute of play.
Jayden Laverde was the key focal point in attack for Metro, kicking three goals to go with 11 possessions (eight contested) and seven score involvements.
