Tigers shirked contests says skipper Trent Cotchin
Jake Niall
April 12, 2014 - 1:08PM
Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin has singled out instances when players shirked contests as a factor in the Tigers' disappointing loss to Collingwood, saying that some players ''weren't willing to go'' when it was their turn to put their bodies on the line.
A forthright Cotchin also saidhis successful tagger, Brent Macaffer, ''got away with a lot'' in terms of the methods used to restrict the Richmond captain. Cotchin was subjected to extremely close checking by Macaffer and had only 13 disposals on Friday night, as the Tigers fell by 38 points, plunging themselves in a mini-crisis at 1-3 after four rounds.
Cotchin spoke to Fairfax Media in the rooms just after coach Damien Hardwick had addressed the team and the coach made plain his displeasure about those occasions when players had not shown sufficient hardness in the contest, as well as skill errors.
''Yeah, we spoke about just fundamental skill errors being an issue, and then just our toughness,'' Cotchin said.
''It's times where some of our players weren't willing to go and unfortunately sometimes that can be the difference in the game.''
Cotchin said Hardwick - whose ire was audible from the Richmond rooms - had spoken to the players about that failure to attack the contest on occasion.
''Yeah, frustrated, as I mentioned just a few contests where he was disappointed with some of the players' efforts, probably across the game there was a few that killed us in the end,'' Cotchin said.
Hardwick seemed to refer to the lack of umpire protection for Cotchin, without specifically mentioning them, after the game. Cotchin said of Macaffer's tactics: ''Look, I'm not one to whinge, but I mean I think we play footy to play the ball and sometimes - credit to Macaffer, he got away with a lot, but when you try and win the footy and someone's sweating on you, it's hard to control the ball, win it and then get it out to your team mates.
''But credit to him, he won the battle. I'll just make sure I beat him next time.''
Cotchin was asked whether the absence of Brett Deledio, the club's other midfield playmaker, had placed a bullseye on the captain. ''Look, it's probably a hard one to speak about from being on the field. I mean, we just try and go about our business. I mean, most weeks you get tagged, so it's just whether or not you beat them on the day and I didn't today. So I let my team mates down.
''I think all midfielders are required to win their fair share of the ball. I see that as my role within the side and there's a number of other guys who need to do the same thing and we haven't quite got to the standard that we would have liked and that's the challenge is to pick that up as quickly as possible.''
Cotchin acknowledged the challenge of leading the team when tagged heavily.
''You can't do the easy things like win the footy as easily as it sometimes can be, but the good thing about our football club is we've got, we expect 22 leaders out there when we play, each play their role and in a way that's a form of leadership and if we're not adhering to that and structure, we're letting ourselves down.''
The Tigers' captain said they had ''fought hard to get back into the game a little bit towards the end, but it was too little too late. Unfortunately that's been the case a couple of weeks in a row now.''
The Tigers started from six goals behind the Bulldogs, recovered in the second half and took the lead but lost the match by kick.
''We probably got our hands on the footy, just turned it over, gave them (Collingwood) an opportunity to get on the burst forward and I think a fair few of their midfielders kicked goals as well, so something we'll look at in review on Monday and make sure that we don't let Brisbane do the same.
''I don't think any team wants to be 1 and 3 four rounds into the season, we're going to have to have a look at ourselves initially and then what we can do differently as a team, just to make sure that we can get the games on terms earlier on, and start playing our way.''
The Tigers have Brisbane next weekend, then the enormous challenges of Hawthorn and Geelong. Hardwick, seemingly referring to the lenient umpiring of Macaffer v Cotchin, said: "There are some people out there that do give the protection. At the end of the day, I'll be showing my players that's how you tag. [Macaffer] did an outstanding job."

Yes they were Trent.
Some issues were also shirked in the coaches box and selection a few days before the game.
Wrap it all up and we get results like last night. More frequently.

yep
glad he went public with it, but the question is, will the selection panel shirk it again with this weeks changes?

oh look Shaun & Shane play important roles......if you look at their numbers....think you'll find they've been involved in more scoring chains than any other players....
-
Maybe he should've mentioned that there are still players picked who perhaps shouldn't be there?

He's also improved his contested footy stats he actually gets to within 5 metres of contests this year whereas last year he wasn't even in the picture so that's pleasing and with the structures we have in place we have no doubt he may get to one by the 2015 pre season.

Cotchin must have been watching the exact game l was. EDWARDS shirked several times. Its time to go Shane Edwards. :banghead
-
Grigg, Ellis and Edwards. We really need to get Miles in asap.
-
Cheating as Penders would say
Or 'soft
-
Pretty shrewd observation by cotch, take it into next week tigers , :shh
-
So I take it the offenders will be dropped next week? pee weak if not. Not going 100% is the biggest afl sin of all and should never be tolerated.

Watched the replay twice
Gee it was bad in regards to players running past contests
Also the inability to tackle was very obvious
Bruise free footy

Your pretty harsh on Griff the lad is 200cm tall and has suffered injuries because of his commitment. Remember in one game his shoulder was smashed out on wing in a contest
-
And Trent's only noticed THIS week?
Didn't you see it last week? Of the week before? And the one before that? Last year? Miss it then too?
Don't know how to break this to you Trent but it's been happening for quite a while now from the usual suspects. Who seem to be the coaches favourites.
So perhaps instead of highlighting it to Fairfax Media you actually knock on the coaches door and say these blokes need to go.. Stop protecting them and phong that suddenly they are going to attack a contest
And BTW saw Jack on Friday night, he unlike so many others stayed until the end. And you're right Jack we got "bruise free footy" once more from the Tigers ;)

... And not harsh enough on Shane Edwards. The number of times he tried to pick the ball up quickly and avoid contact in a contest, only to leave the ball behind could have been counted on the fingers of two hands, but you wouldn't have too many fingers left over for other uses.
-
Lol at Lids not putting his head over the ball. stuff me dead.
-
Now something is not well in the state of Denmark here.
We have a coach who will go down in AFL history as an absolute hard nut who never piked a contest, and yet his charges are labelled as playing bruise free football. Is this not more of an indictment on the coach and his cohorts then?

Am there every week as you would know
Tried to give you a wave but couldn't catch you attention WP
-
You stayed until the end because you thrive on Richmond losing. You live for it. You pine for it. You think of it during romantic moments.

And that's why I pay $35 to go to the upcoming Cocktail party you clown
I support through my pocket and by attendance

Yeah that was harsh. Stand by the others though.
-
No one subbed out of the ressies game yet. It seems fanciful that players could come up for a game after a four day break, unless they've been Danked. It's beyond belief that Dimma would go with the same 22 against the Lions .... or maybe not?
-
Lids is courageous
To say otherwise is poor form

Have not ever seen Martin refuse to put his head over the footy. Deledio is solid at it as are Hampson & Griffiths.
Yeah, Shane Edwards aka The Warrior is a hard nut and those blokes are soft.

What's happened to Ellis? In his first year he didn't shirk a contest. This year he has shirked several in front of me…..
He really has got ahead of himself!

He did shirk a few in year 1 especially very early in the season, ditto year 2
Just think it's become more obvious this year because of the higher profile he seems to have = face of m'ship campaign/commercial and the junior program (Brando's Buddies).

Maybe they are more glaringly obvious this year but he had a reputation as a junior of being tough and uncompromising.
-
He was horribly soft in his first season, so much so that it hurt the team in some games. And apart from one game this year he has gone back to that.
-
saving themselves for the Dawks gig ;D

This is the best thing I've heard Cotchin say as a captain. Good on him. Hopefully growing as a leader ?
Watched about 2 minutes of McGuire and Brereton's new show tonite. It was painful so I quickly changed channels but not before I saw Dermott highlight one piece of play from Bachar Houli and make a big deal of it. Dermott was 100% right. Really , really soft and ordinary from Bachar. He simply ran away from the contest. We will never be a good team if Dimma tolerates that.
