Summary

Having suffered their first loss of the season against Port Adelaide last weekend, the Cats get the chance to redeem themselves against a Richmond side that has fallen in an almighty hole. The two sides' recent form and the history between the clubs over the past three decades suggest that this will be a one-sided affair. Since the start of the 1984 season, Geelong and Richmond have met 46 times. The Cats have won 38 of them, including the last nine on the trot.

Lamb's to the slaughter, a bloodbath, so many ways to describe what's going to take place this weekend. The club has now played their get out of jail injury card, what spin will they apply after a 100+ loss. We all know we won't win this weekend but we need to see a change in mindset, game style and overall effort otherwise all faith will be lost in the current regime, if it hasn't already been after the Hawks fiasco.

Here's how things will pan out 10 mins into the first quarter it will be 2 0 12 apiece with commitment okay and ball movement not as scrubby as we've seen it by quarter time Geelong will be 3 goals up.

In the second quarter we'll get some footy but our stTic movement will be easily repelled by Kelly, Mackie, Bartel and co who just know no other way and despite kicking a few majors in the quarter the margin will be in the vicinity of 5 -6 gaols.

The second half will see more of the same as the first and Richmond will suffer a best case scenario of 61-72 points so if its the footy Quad game or the Quarter quad game there you have it place your bets.

If of course Geelong want to make a statement and they usually do against us after their defeat yesterday against Port expect a hiding of a much bigger nature where blokes like Burberry, Horlin Smith and other new faces to the Cats line up will learn that when they play us these are the types of margins they will be beating us by for the rest of their careers or for most of it anyway except e odd year we have a rebuild that coincides with a slight decline in their performance like 2012 when we threw everything at them but still lost because they know how to beat us with their eyes closed.

I never miss games. Missed 2 MCG games since 95 due to weddings.

I reckon I'll choose as sit at home with my 2 month old rather than put up with another circus performance like Sunday. Not even entertaining to watch, which is the saddest thing.

Spot on. I can handle losing. Sure as hell sat through enough of them over the years. But we are playing a horrid brand. The best bit on Sunday was watching us drag Hawthorn down towards our level and look like poo too.  :lol

An important step for the players this week is to play attacking footy irrespective of the score. I dont care if we lose by 100 points if we ourselves kick say 12 or 13 goals. But I will be angry if we lose 100 points and we only kick say 7 or 8 goals for the game. Play on at all times, run hard and play tough aggressive footy is what I want to see. Not the crap we have put up since the start of the season.

Personally I thought I did some good work in here lately especially my thread asking for the mass sackings of people before the Hawthorn game. Went early got proven right and took a few cheap shots to boot. I did my best to get things moving. What's the go with Sunday 3:20pm games. It means I can play golf in the morning and still make it to the game unfortunately.  :shh
Remember when Hardwick first started, he played the kids, we had a go and played a really exciting style of footy but still lost. I'd take that right about now!
Come on Dimma, don't be so pigheaded and make some changes to personal and that SH/ty game plan.  It will be your down fall if you don't. You still have a chance.

....and at least in 2010 Hardwick had us hunting in packs....

...wonder if the departure of Cousins had an effect....past his prime, but a real on-field leader....example on the training track...(he leaves...and the likes of Grigg & Houli arrive....hmmm....)

Could you imagine any Richmond side since then:

 - coming back from 10 goals down?

 - having Jack kick 10 goals?

 - outmuscling Sydney in contested football and coming from behind to win, with a skinny little dud flanker kicking match sealing goals while concussed? (yes we've beaten them twice since, but not in that manner or at their own game and we lead them all day both times.)

Funny.  Part of me hopes Vickery can play well and land us an unbelievable defeat and part of me wishes he goes kickless to highlight to the selection committee their mistakes.
If he hardly gets a touch, will he be dropped again?

i guess we have to see which scenario will unfold......

Steven Motlop says the Cats want to show better intent against the Tigers

    Ryan Reynolds
    Geelong Advertiser
    May 03, 2014

A FIRED-up Geelong has vowed to raise the physicality stakes against Richmond at the MCG tomorrow.

Seething from its 40-point loss to Port Adelaide last Sunday, returning star Steven Motlop said the Cats had been “really physical” in training leading up to the crucial game against the struggling Tigers.

“Just our intent. Just on the training track we have been really physical,” Motlop said.

“We just want to be right up in their face and put pressure on the game.

“We have had a great start to the year and a part from the loss on the weekend everything is going really well. We will be looking to bounce back this week.”

Motlop was last night named for his first senior match of 2014 after knee surgery in London saw him miss start of the season.

Dawson Simpson, who rolled his ankle at training last week, has also been brought into the team.

Jackson Thurlow (back) and Josh Walker (omitted) will both miss.

The Tigers have recalled Aaron Edwards, Alex Rance, Ty Vickery and Brett Deledio for the must win match with Dylan Grimes, Ricky Petterd, Matthew Arnot, Ben Griffiths (all omitted) making way.

Richmond has won just two of its opening six matches this season and a loss against the Cats could see them need to win 10 of its 13 to make finals.

Motlop said Geelong needed to shut down the space available to Richmond’s slick ball users.

“They are a very good side. They have got some really good ball users and, you know, they are a bit like Port, they have these great users and if you let them get on top and use the ball early they are going to hurt you,” he said.

“So we will be looking to nullify a few of their players.”

Port Adelaide made Geelong pay for missing key chances in front of goal early in their clash and Motlop said the playing group had learned a lot from the match.

“We let port play a pretty free flowing game and let them use the ball really easily,” he said. “Something we really pride ourselves on is our defence ... We don’t want to let them score as easily (as Port Adelaide did).”

Richmond   0.1-1
Geelong     3.3-21

chip chip kicking is what is killing us. Defenders using too much energy with this short kicking poo & defenders ain't getting a breather. hence Cats get on top

I'm sorry but that's why we lose. Only had to shut it down with 30 secs to go and force a stoppage or clearance to the boundary line and despite three times having first hands on the footy we panic, allow the ball loose and cough up a soft goal  :banghead.

Half-time

Richmond    0.1    4.3-27
Geelong      3.3    7.8-50

Goals: Riewoldt, Deledio, Lloyd, Martin.

They simply put the pressure onto themselves. They handball 1 metre to a player who is covered. has happened too many times when a simple turn the other way & put it onto the boot long. They have given Geelong at least 4 goals  :banghead

Vlastuin has been fantastic as has Conca. Houli, Grigg, Newman & Chaplin really stand out as very ordinary players. Time to stand up in the second half as the players should be sick of letting the cats push them around...I know I am.

eff me.. work so hard to get back into the contest and then we gift them their last 2 goals. so instead of going in at 1/2 time with our tails up 11 points down, we're still 4 goals down... eff me  :banghead

Conca and Floss have been brilliant, Lids, Jack & Ellis very good. Lloyd showing a touch of class when he gets near it.

That benny hill goal we gave them all started with Rance who played on and basically ran into trouble the gumby, quick handball to Astbury who was under the pump, turns it over and then Morris rthe silly prick spoils an easy mark for rance and then McDonough overruns the ball in the square. Absolute comedy capers.

and their goal just before 1/2 time with Houli squibbing it on the wing... :facepalm

ah well we gave our yelp.... for a second I felt this could be the game we can build from (even if we lose) but I now fully expect us to be deflated with those last couple of plays and to get overrun in the second half. Amazing thing momentum, can seize up with one or 2 moments of madness

Houli had to keep the ball in tight but like always pushes it out so the opposition can move it forward. Has no footy smarts at all.

Spot on.

It's always a backward 1m handball too to a teammate who is covered when everyone else has run forward. Not only is it a turnover but the opposition get a clear run forward in numbers with free men everywhere.

Thats right we do have the players & they can play. They just need pumping up & beleive in themselves. When new players come into the side, it always takes time for them to settle in. We can't think Rance & lids are going to have big second half after missing so much footy but we can  :pray they do. l think l can watch this next half & know l will enjoy it cause they will have a go. Okay, let's see how we go after half-time. We have conceded the first goal in the 3rd qtr every game so far and usually softly within the first 2 minutes  ::). Let's see if history meekly repeats or we actually finally stand up for more than a quarter and get the momentum going our way again.

We're winning the clearances and lead the contested footy and look good when we go quick and direct forward but it's our Benny Hill moments :facepalm that screw us up when we do those pointless dicky little kicks and 1m nothing handballs and needlessly put ourselves under pressure.

:clapping :clapping that's good hard working football tigers. I mistakenly thought we had done our dash, but we've kept going. Cut out some brain snaps and we'd be in front now.
'
Showed character to get back into the game, do we have the guts to go on with it and score a memorable victory? Could be the making of this side if we win this.

One thing that annoys me is how other teams are allowed to illegal block so often, geelong do it about as good as anyone and saw the get away with it several times that qtr. Towards the end of the qtr Hawkins blocked astbury out and left burbury I think who dropped an easy mark 15 metres out, that wshould have been a free to astbury bc Hawkins was blocking him with the ball 20 metres away in the air.

What I take from the game.

*peeweak effort as usual. Sure you can say we somewhat matched it with geelong in the wet for 2 and a half quarters, but our season was on the line. We had to win this game, should have seen every single player putting their body on the line to get the win, wasnt the case. Pathetic.

*Defense I Thought was very good, Astbury and Rance I like a lot more than Chappy and rance.

*Few blessing in disguises, Chappy could get a week or two for that bump and Newman might miss some games too, blessing in disguises.

*Vickery was pretty disappointing in my mind, atleast in the first half. Griff should get the call up after his dominance in the VFL.

*Forward line in general is just chaotic, seems like they have no idea what they're doing. unorganised.

* I thought conca was really really good, when everyone was flat footed, he was trying to create run. one of our best.

* Hampson is getting shat on by his direct opponent consistently, badly need maric.

Start playing the kids and get ready for next year, season over fellas.

l'm pumped after that. geelong is not as good as they think they are. The Tigers are better than we all think they are. Injuries have depleted us & today it showed again. But bad decisions cost us games like that. The bonus is the umpires clearly favoured them & we didn't fold & there was no sooking.

Don't be a moron, if it was pathetic we would have lost by more than 10 goals , the inclusions of rance and delids was a massive one and sparked massive games from conca , Ellis, and Jackson, yep first half we lacked polish, if we can play with same initiative for rest of year, we, ll win more than we lose. Must win games against the grain though

First 45 minutes disgraceful and simply attrocious
Excellent beyond that point
Vlastuin, Conca, Rance, Deledio, Jackson, Cotchin excellent
Grigg, A.Edwards and Houli lucky to be in the side although Houli is trying to cover for too many other people not carrying their weight or mistakes. Alot of the side were ok today. McDonough is improving. Today was our best performance of the season when we discount the first 45 minutes.
Umpires hate us. Hardwick coached good today.

We dropped and fumbled everything, absolutley everything.
I think it took more than 10 minutes before a couple of good productive passes were strung together.

BUT, I saw more hard running and tackling than I have seen in the past 6 games, so there is much to look foward to if that continues and I mean IF.

No one is happy we lost but many are happy with the improved effort. Sometimes its how you lose that counts as opposed to how you win. Honourable? Yes, we could have chucked it in completely, I thought we would, but we found something to take into the next game.

Yep, today we showed why many fans have been so disappointed and angry at our performances in the first 6 rounds of the season. We can play so much better than we've shown and hopefully we use today as a springboard to play hard honest aggressive footy for the rest of the season.

One thing that disappointed me in the final qtr was once Selwood went off, Lids no longer manned him, would have been a great test of his concentration to see if he could've have continued to stop him. Lids needs those types of roles, hes as gifted as anyone in the comp, just cruises a bit too much, needs the challenge of playing on the best to show he is amongst them.

Conca was brilliant today, clean, sure handed(where were the fumbles? :)) Ellis and Floss also stood up. Rance was massive, defence looks much better with him in it, Astbury was again very good - love seeing the angst and anger he has when his direct opponent takes a mark on him, gets deadest dirty on himself.  :lol Cotchin worked his way through a really tough tag and had an impact. Lids was all class

I don't mean to be disrespectful but Im glad newman did his calf, that's the only way we'll see him out of the side.  Bring in Griff for Azza, Lennon for Newman and Miles for Gordon and petard for Grigg. I haven't been a fan of petterd but he responded exactly how you want to see players respond to being dropped and deserves a spot in the side ahead of a few.

Best game from Morris in a while too, forget about rebounding and just play lockdown.

they had a crack and failed i can live with that. at least it was watchable.

i didnt expect a win and i havent put great emphasis on the win loss column even at the start of the yr. to me this season was about improvement and if that meant wins as well id take it.

i dont think we have improved but at least we got back to being competetive. it was a big improvement on what we have dished up so far this yr.

despite having a real crack even if we had won i would stand by what i have said about the list. we do lack quality we lack depth, and we are short on player types in some key areas. just too many glass half fulls for me and its borne out in the mistakes and poor skills and poor decision making.

im hoping this so called honorable loss doesnt see us continually persevere with players who continually fall back into  mediocrity. we need to turn players over and we need to address plenty of problems.

I just hope that lack of 4 points for that effort doesn't end up more a downer than the boys realising the intensity and hardwork they showed for the last 2.5 quarters is what they need to bring to the table each and every week for 4 quarters. In the past, a gallant loss against a good side was too often followed by a downer and a poor loss to a weaker team. I'll wait until after the Melbourne game before I see today's effort as a potential turning point.

Pros:
* Lids and Rance were massive ins and they showed how much we missed them. Lids for his line breaking and Rance for his intercepts.
* The up and coming 2nd tierers - Conca, Vlastuin and Ellis - had good games especially Reece.
* Astbury grabbed another scalp. That's Cloke, Roughead and Hawkings in the past month.
* Team defensive structures held up today. It was only when there were dumb schoolboy errors did we cough up soft goals.
* Spread and run from midway through the 2nd onwards was very good. We are far more deadly when we play long and direct quickly.
* Kicked the first goal of the 3rd qtr for the first time in a long while. We actually came out after half-time ready to go again at the intensity required.

Cons:
* You can't give any opposition, let alone Geelong, a 6 goal start and expect to win. Our first quarters have been ordinary all year and today's was just as dreadful. We were non-competitive for the first 40 mins. Not good enough and not AFL standard and clearly so based on the effort we then found for the rest of the game.
* We tried to play dry possession footy, which we obviously had practised midweek, for a quarter and a half in the wet which was just dumb, dumb, dumb.
* 6 goals to Geelong directly from our turnovers (they only kicked 11 in total). Most of those turnovers from dumb schoolboy errors. That goal just before half-time in the end proved so costly.
* Geelong had 10 more scoring shots but missed a few which kept us in the game one the scoreboard. You can't rely on that again. If we are honest we were outclassed early on and again in the last which got them across the line.
* Our forward line is still dysfunctional and kicks inside forward 50 are still too much pray and hope.
* Still too many needless 1m backward handballs when kicking the pill was the better option.
* Still too many kicks under no physical pressure that miss open targets. Not good enough at this level.
* Wet weather games which involved more contested footy really show up those players who don't like going when it's their turn to go.

I hate the fact we lost but can't question the effort today. Much better than the dribble we have been dished up the last coupe of weeks which was deplorable. We were competitive for most part of the day which was pleasing. A coupe of ins and outs next week and the team will be better for it.  Still one too many spuds in the team for my liking.

I'm sure that there are a few who are relieved we didn't win today. Hope your pumped fellas.

Ah the apologists the type of people who get shortchanged at the supermarket and with their kids with them start abusing the 15 yr old check out kid and run to a current affair but when it comes the apathy of a footy club, well then that's a different story. High moral ground. Think of the children.

I' m gutted we lost. I'm gutted we played so poorly for 45 minutes yet for the other 75 we kicked 12-2-74 to 6-9-45 and went under by 5 points. Still thinking how we lost today and the same old story of the tape with the Dogs game. Could be 4-3 playing crap footy but instead we are 2-5. For me that is unacceptable but hey each to their own.

That second half today just like the second half against the Dogs have been the best 4 quarters of footy we have played all year and we lost both games. Wasteful and terrible.

Not a bad effort today. Even thought Grigg did a pretty good job.
We are clearly not up to it so it was nice to at least see a bit of fight and even a bit of flair.

Rance would have to be just about our most important player. Things just seem to happen when he is involved.

Did anyone else think the umpiring was a little one sided? I just thought there was a fair few times we tackled them after they had had plenty of time to dispose of the footy only to be called a ball up.

Miles would have been pretty handy today  :whistle Not sure why we didn't pick him??

Yep that evokes exactly what we are thinking. :thumbsup

Was lost for words when I saw we led the frees count 19-13 BT.

The ones they give to them seem to be more important and influential to scores than the ones they give to us. That one against Rance was just terrible adjudication.

Bachar Houli escapes a bit of criticism this year. I reckon he's been pretty ordinary and would love to see Lennon putting pressure on his position.
Loses his feet to often and his kicking has not been up to the standards previously. Not convinced that he's good enough to be a strong finals footballer.

Houli's escaped criticism the entire time he's been at Ruichmond. He can probably thank Grigg for that.

As for today's game - Geelong always had our measure, Cats just played Cat & Mouse with us all day. If it had been dry they would've won by 10 goals, dropped plenty of sitters in their forward 50 -  28 scoring shots to 16 says it all. "Honourable" losses can FOAD.

This just about sums it all up for me right now:

Agree. This was the game we had to win yet we get blasted away in the first quarter on the MCG. Geelong kicked inaccurately. Again too much was left to too few. After the press we got last week any other team would have come out all firing. Nothing honourable about this loss.

Jackson was fantastic on the weekend but this cost us a cost.

If you look at the footage, he was on Johnson. He was absolutely spent for the run down the win and then wrestle with Hunt that he wasn't able to contest at the ball up and Johnson was able to get an easy possession that won the clearance from that stoppage and kick the ball up the wing. You could excuse Jackson to think that he was taking care of Hunt cause they were wrestling, but as the ball was moving forward to the flank, the ball was centred to Hunt who was miles on his own with no1 chasing him from the stoppage where Jackson was wrestling him and kicked a pretty easy goal which hurt our momentum.

So either way as good as the little wrestle was it clearly cost us a goal as it put Jackson out of the game for 2 minutes.

You can also suggest that no1 was willing to do something extra and cover Johnson for Jackson at the stoppage or chase Hunt when Jackson couldn't go with him.

You come on this forum and bag the club, the player and carry on like a whiny baby but have the hide to call me a disgrace.
You seem to think there is a culture based issue but behave in a way that could never in any way role model what an elite, team culture should aspire to become.
I reckon you wonder why noone ever listens to your rants.
The forum is the perfect place all of us Richmond fans can come and either give the club a spray or give the club a pat on the back.
I don't think there is a culture problem it's obvious they have one and it's been the major issue at the club since the 80's.
How I behave shouldn't have any bearing on how the club performs. All I want is for them to finally be successful again just as everyone here does and I'm sure even you.
As for anyone reading my posts.... You did  ;D

Cotchin plea for positive action

“I thought our competitiveness was back to where we expect it to be,” Cotchin told ‘Roar Vision’.

“We had some really stern conversations early this week, and we backed it up with some actions . . .

“That first quarter really let us down.  In the end, it was the difference in the result.

“But we showed a lot of fight, a lot of spirit, and now it’s our challenge to carry that through training over the next couple of weeks and then into the game v the ‘Dees’.
