On the news today, it was reported that a street may be (re)named in honour of Jack Dyer in the area around the old Ch 9 studios redevelopment in Richmond.

Yarra Council is considering a petition to name a street after Richmond Football Club legend Jack Dyer.

Richmond resident Suzana Talevski submitted a petition to the council after discovering the “tremendous” amount of work Dyer did for the Richmond community.

“Not only was he one of the greatest VFL players, he really changed the landscape in Richmond in the 1930s and that needs to be acknowledged,” she said.

Yarra councillor Stephen Jolly is backing the campaign, and tabled the formal petition at last week’s council meeting.

“I think it’s long overdue and in a time when Richmond has gone through immense change – over 55 per cent of all developments in Yarra have been in Richmond – we have to treasure our history,” Cr Jolly said.

He suggested a new street in the Lend Lease development on the former Channel Nine studios site or in the Hickory development near Victoria Gardens.

“The officers will come up with a range of options and I’m going to put a squeeze on the developers.,” he said.

“We heard Coles wants to name a street after themselves, so I don’t see why we can’t have a Jack Dyer Street.”

Dyer’s family is also supporting Ms Talevski’s campaign.

'Dyer Street has a good ring to it'

There's a community push to name a street in Richmond after football legend Jack Dyer.

A group of fans and relatives are petitioning the City a Yarra to honour the Richmond great with a street in his home suburb.

One of Dyer's nieces, Gabrielle Turner, told Tom Elliott the group has submitted the idea to the council.

"We are calling on the City of Yarra, the Richmond city council, to actually have a street named [after Dyer]," she said.

"The latest update I've had this afternoon is that they've offered a park but the people involved and the Richmond army are all very keen on it being Dyer street, Richmond 3121."

Tom Elliott said 'Dyer street' had a good ring to it, but questioned whether they were seeking to rename an existing street or find a new one to name.

"I believe there are some redevelopments coming up in a few places. And then people have suggested things like laneways to the renaming of streets with no significance," she said.

"So we're open-minded about where, as long as we can achieve Dyer street Richmond."

Richmond street tribute planned for one of the yellow and black pack’s greatest tigers of old
Herald-Sun
May 12, 2014

A PUSH to name a Richmond street after Tigers football legend Jack Dyer is gaining momentum.

An online petition had gathered 186 signatures as of late last week and an application has been made to Yarra Council, which is yet to make a decision.

Lifelong Richmond resident and Tigers fan Suzana Talevski is behind the push.

Ms Talevski said she was shocked to find Dyer hadn’t already been recognised with a street name.

“Not only was he one of the greatest footballers to grace this town but he was very much part of the social fabric of this community,” Ms Talevski said.

“He was a local policeman and a small-business owner/operator right here in Church Street Richmond. He positively impacted so many lives.

“Everywhere you go in Richmond, someone has a story to tell about Jack,” Ms Talevski said.

A ruckman dubbed “Captain Blood” for his toughness, Dyer was a giant figure in Richmond.

During a two-decade career which ended in 1952, he at times captained and coached the Tigers and won two premierships.

Dyer was presented with a Richmond Council medal in 1934 and received an Order of Australia in 1990.

He passed away in 2003.

Ms Talevski recommended a new or unnamed street be named in Dyer’s honour and Socialist councillor Stephen Jolly suggested a new street in a development such as the former Channel 9 site or around Victoria Gardens.

Yarra Mayor Jackie Fristacky hailed Dyer as a “true Richmond icon”, but said the council’s current policy was to use indigenous names.

She did however add that council would review its naming policy.

Cr Fristacky said the protocol was that developers suggested names to the council for new streets.

Jack Dyer street plan: Council backs push to honour Richmond Tigers legend

Date    June 4, 2014 - 8:01AM

Nick Toscano

Yarra Council has endorsed a proposal to name a Richmond street in honour of Tigers football legend Jack Dyer.

Dressed in yellow and black, a crowd of Richmond football fans filled Yarra Council's chambers on Tuesday night to address a meeting in support of the long-running campaign calling for a street to be named after the famous football identity.

"We had a pretty substantial representation from the football club ... People were so emotional about Jack Dyer that they were in tears," mayor Jackie Fristacky said.

"He was such a mainstay of the Richmond community - not just as a football player, but a long-term resident and benefactor - and in so many ways he was a legend."

Councillors voted in favour of naming an as-yet unnamed street in honour of the former ruckman, also known as Captain Blood, who died in 2003, aged 89.

Cr Fristacky said the street would be part of a new one-hectare housing development, Jaques Richmond, bounded by Highett, Griffiths, Palmer and Coppin streets.

The council hopes the new street will be named Jack Dyer Street, rather than simply Dyer Street, but Cr Fristacky said the proposal to include the full name needed to be approved by the Victorian Place Names Committee.

Gabrielle Turner, Dyer's niece, spoke at the council meeting about her uncle's role in the community, and of the family's history.

An online petition for a street to be named in honour of Dyer had attracted more than 1250 signatures.

Yarra Council said the naming would be a recognition of Dyer's contribution to the community, but the process could "not happen overnight", with administrative procedures, approval with the Place Names Committee and consultations with the indigenous community still to come.

"There are still a number of hurdles," Cr Fristacky said.

Supporters of the campaign said naming a Richmond street after Dyer was long overdue.

"Not only was he one of the greatest footballers to grace this town, but he was very much part of the social fabric of the community," campaigner Suzana Talevski wrote on the petition's website.

"He was a local policeman and a small business owner ... right here in Church Street, Richmond. Everywhere you go, someone has a story to tell about Jack."

One of the toughest ruckmen of his time, Dyer played more than 300 games for the Tigers between 1931-49. He coached the side from 1941-52.

Richmond’s AFL footy legend Jack Dyer will have street named after him thanks to passionate campaign

TIGERS football legend Jack Dyer will be honoured with a street in his beloved Richmond.

Yarra Councillors last night unanimously agreed to name a street that will be part of the Jacques development in Richmond as “Dyer St”.

The council will now apply to the state Office of Geographic Names to have the name assigned to the road, which will run between Coppin and Griffiths streets, near the Palmer St end of the development.

The decision follows a passionate campaign to have the Richmond stalwart recognised in the suburb, which included an online petition that gathered more than 1300 signatures.

Campaign spokeswoman Suzana Talevski told the council that naming the street after Jack Dyer was “a Richmond issue” and it was about “paying respect to the people who contributed so much to Richmond — and Jack did that”.

Melba Ward Councillor Phillip Vlahogiannis congratulated those leading the push for their campaign and their passion and said it was “important to commemorate people who are important to our community”.

“Captain Blood’s getting a street — how about that?” Cr Vlahogiannis said.

The talented ruckman, dubbed “Captain Blood” for his toughness, was a giant figure in Richmond, captaining and coaching the Tigers during a two-decade career which ended in 1952.

Dyer was presented with a Richmond Council medal in 1934 and received an Order of Australia in 1990. He died in 2003.

Yarra Council policies and guidelines required the council to consult with indigenous communities about the proposal, but council officers said at the time of preparing the report into the naming of Dyer St, no formal stuff had been received from the Wurundjeri Tribe Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council.

The council also contacted the Office of Geographic Names to gauge their view about the proposal, and whether the street could be named “Jack Dyer St”, rather than “Dyer St”.

However, the council officers’ report notes that the preference for commemorative names was to use just the surname.

“Limited scope does exist for sites which do not have properties abutting the road (for address purposes), to include the first name together with the surname,” the report said, but in this case, the road in the Jacques development would have properties fronting the street.
