Richmond coach Damien Hardwick wants Tigers to play ruthless footy against Melbourne out of respect for Tom Hafey

DAMIEN Hardwick says Richmond lost Tommy Hafey’s blueprint.

But the Tigers coach warned his side was fighting to get it back and would honour two qualities Hafey stood for when he held Hardwick’s post and led Richmond to four flags in its golden era.

“Relentless and ruthless,” Hardwick said yesterday before the Tigers trained in ‘Tommy T-shirts’.

“Tommy’s an immortal of our footy club (and) a legend of the AFL so it’s a significant weekend.”

Hardwick said while today’s pre-game routine would remain standard, he implored his Tigers to put special emphasis on running, chasing, tackling and one-percenters in yesterday’s team meeting.

“(They’re) the things that Tommy brought to the fore of his football coaching.”

The Tigers served hot tea — Hafey’s drink of choice — to about 200 fans yesterday and Hardwick said when he joined the Tigers he trawled through Richmond literature to study up on Hafey’s coaching wisdom.

“The things he stood for resonate today. The blueprint Tommy left this footy club has been lost for whatever reason for a reason of time, and that’s a blueprint we’re trying to get back,” Hardwick said.

“If we can play some quality football like those Tigers of old, we’re going in the right direction.”

The Sherrin used against Melbourne at the MCG today will adorn Hafey’s lifespan (1931-2014) while spearhead Jack Riewoldt will be desperate to end his frustrating return against the Demons as both clubs eye their third win.

Riewoldt’s return of 15.26 from 11 Melbourne matches is his worse record against any club, while he has kicked more goals than behinds against the Demons only once — when he returned 2.1 back in 2008.

Hardwick said the absence of James Frawley — who usually stands Riewoldt — would be a “bonus” but was wary of the Dees’ improvement under Paul Roos.

“The rise of young (Demon Tom) McDonald, Lynden Dunn’s probably in career-best form, they’ve got some really capable players down there,” he said.

Legends Kevin Bartlett and Warwick Capper were among a host of people in the AFL community to pay their respects to the late Tom Hafey, who lost his battle with cancer on Monday.

Hardwick said debutant Ben Lennon would have been in the Round 1 frame if he hadn’t hurt his knee and praised the crafty swingman who joined Punt Rd with pick 12 last year.

“He’s an uncanny goalsneak, good mark and outstanding kick, so he’s going to be a good player for us for a long period of time.

Hardwick did not shy away from his side’s miserable start but said the Tigers took a step forward in their method against Geelong before the bye.

“We’re disappointed with where we’re at. We’ve only got ourselves to blame, we’re not playing anywhere near our capability,” he said.

“We’ve done a lot of soul-searching and a lot of reviewing over the course of the break and we’ll change a few things to get our season back up and going.”

The AFL has advised fans attending the Richmond v Melbourne game to avoid driving, with parking “extremely limited” due to scheduled maintenance works at Yarra Park.

The only vehicle access is via Gate 5 or 6 on Punt Rd.

Richmond has asked fans to arrive early for a pre-match Hafey tribute.

I agree with Hardwick that we have lost a lot of what Tommy Hafey brought to the club. Hafey was about honor, integrity, loyalty to your mates, hard work and caring about the football club.

I know for a fact that for long periods of time after 1980 - many elements of those stated above have not been in the Richmond fabric especially loyalty to your teammates and the club and caring about the football club. If we ever get those things back for real and not just as media or marketing hype we will be back on the right road. Hardwick still needs to try and develop the issues of hard work and caring within his playing group because he still has too many players who dont give a stuff.

Time for Tigers to win in AFL

Their stars are returning and the quality of play is improving - now Richmond must win.

Regardless of the high emotions surrounding the death of club immortal Tom Hafey, Saturday's AFL match against Melbourne at the MCG is crucial for the Tigers.

Last year's elimination finalists have started this season poorly and only have two wins from seven games.

Melbourne have the same win-loss record and they will fancy their chances of a significant upset.

But if Richmond end up having a successful season, this three-week block will have been pivotal.

After Hawthorn totally outclassed them in round six, Richmond went down to Geelong by only five points.

Coach Damien Hardwick said they used last weekend's bye to conduct a thorough review.

"It's been a tough period and we're nowhere near where we want to be," he said.

"You lose two games by under a kick, you only have yourself to blame.

"We have to make sure we put our heads down and bums up and get the results we're after."

It is no coincidence that as soon as key players Brett Deledio and Alex Rance returned from injury, the Tigers nearly beat the Cats.

Star ruckman Ivan Maric will play for the first time at any level this year when he has a run on Saturday in the VFL.

Hardwick said their injury list is also noticeably shorter.

He pointed to Adelaide's upset win over Collingwood on Thursday night when explaining the importance of having Deledio and Rance back in the side.

"Funnily enough, you see `Tex' Walker come back for Adelaide and it's a flow-on effect," Hardwick said.

"You see the immediate impact of having a quality player back in your organisation, where other players get better as a result."

Saturday will mark the senior debut of utility Ben Lennon, who was Richmond's top pick at No.12 in last year's national draft.

Lennon was a chance to play in round one, but suffered a knee injury.

Another boost for Richmond - and key forward Jack Riewoldt in particular - is that Melbourne have lost James Frawley to injury.

While Frawley has played in attack for the last few weeks, he has a very good record on Riewoldt.

But Hardwick said Demons defenders such as Tom McDonald and Lynden Dunn were in good form.

"Melbourne, to their credit, have been outstanding defensively anyway," he said.

"As a side, we haven't been scoring enough and it's something we're obviously looking to increase this week."

Cough that crap up for a club legend.

See thats the stuffing problem the season and finals were on the line first and foremost, as much respect as I have for Tom Hafey the message in the rooms all week should have been on where we need to be for this season and how much this game meant to play finals, everything they worked for all pre season is on the line. Now the season is over and its 2012 all over again so for me no more grigg, newman, pettard, chaplain,  etc

Dimma, hartley, peggy lou and players can go get stuffed.
Lost to a club who celebrated cheating and who gave Dean Bailey cancer, go get stuffed.
