Hardwick devastated, has no answers for loss

A SHATTERED Damien Hardwick has conceded his Richmond outfit is not the same one that played in a final just eight months ago – and simply doesn't know why.

After Saturday's 17-point loss to Melbourne, the Tigers appear unlikely to repeat last year's achievement and finish in the top eight, slumping to just two wins from eight games.

Hardwick, who looked drained and overwrought afterwards following an emotional week with the passing of club great Tommy Hafey, struggled to find words after the game.

He grew emotional as his post-match press conference went on, particularly when talking about David Astbury's knee injury.

When it was put to him that teams don't just lose ability in a period of nine months, he said the reason behind the Tigers' alarming drop off had him mystified.

"We were having the exact same conversation," Hardwick said.

"Personnel has changed a little bit. Has it changed a lot? No.

"Unfortunately at the moment, we're not the same side.

"It's disappointing to me, it's disappointing to the players - more importantly, it's disappointing to our fans.

"We have to make sure we take some steps and get our game back up and going.

"Unfortunately I've been saying this for six or seven weeks - I'm sick of talking about it."

He was then asked if the situation was exasperating, or frustrating.

He sighed and responded with, "Yeah, you've got no idea."

Captain Trent Cotchin, who Hardwick admitted probably shouldn't have played after quarter-time because of an ankle injury he needed re-strapped in the second half, said the players didn't shy away from pre-season expectations.

But after being comprehensively beaten in one-on-one contests, he said it might be time to put players "on notice".

"We let ourselves down in a few areas we'll have to review quite closely," Cotchin said.

"Whether or not it's putting guys on notice or just coming together as a group and making sure we're prepared as best we can be for next week.

"Without looking at the game it's hard to see but there's times, me included, where we need to win our one-on-one contests and we let ourselves down.

"We'll do some work on that this week at training and make sure it doesn't happen on a consistent basis."

Cotchin could barely run by the game's end, with Hardwick conceding he was in doubt for Saturday's clash with Greater Western Sydney.

"To his credit he fought it out, that's the type of kid he is - we need a few more like him," Hardwick said.

The Tigers will turn to the VFL for fresh personnel, but Hardwick said ruckman Ivan Maric would likely need another two games after his return on Saturday.

While the coach won't publically draw a line through the season yet, his demeanour suggested he knows the enormity of the task ahead of them if they're to repeat last year's September berth.

"(It's) incredibly disappointing - one, from a seasonal point of view, but then after the death of an icon of our footy club, to dish up that kind of performance was really disappointing," he said.

"We know what's happening - at the bookends, in essence, we're losing the contested ball.

"It was a strength of ours last year and for whatever reason, it's not working this year.

"Funnily enough though today, we lost through the middle as well.

"People will say the emotion got to us, but emotion doesn't come into winning one-on-one contests.

"That's just whether you want it as compared to the bloke beside you.

"Unfortunately, they wanted it a lot more than us today."

For 5 losses he's had excuses.
Today he has no clue.
Either the penny has dropped and he realises his gameplan is skata or he has lost the players.

Dimma you are Dead Man Walking.

We still have 58 contracted games of Spud mark 2.

Judging on history we are at Round 8 2002.

Finals 2025 here we come.

read it then take some blood pressure tablets to bring down the blood pressure to normal levels. mine hit 180/110 this afternoon. I actually checked it about 5 minutes before the end of the game.

So, you're thinking of putting some guys on notice are you Damian? Halle-effing luliah, it's about time. I'll tell you where to start -Shaun Grigg. Get this effing spud out of the team and out the front door immediately. Then slam it in his face!!!!! Then follow it up with Tyrone Vickery. That soft, weak BLUDGER should NEVER DISGRACE a Richmond jumper again. Finally, replace Charlie Chaplin. I don't care if you repace him with Grimes, Darrou, McIntosh or a stick of celery. JUST GET IT DONE.

What's changed?

We lost Leppitsch and Campbell and gained Bailey and McQualter. Most other teams have highly regarded assistant coaches, we have Daly and Mark Williams.

Also, what has happened to Chocco? Has he been muzzled? We'd see him all the time last year on the boundary line now it's like he has disappeared off the face of the earth. Did Hardwick not like him getting all the attention?

its been a simple case of in  making finals  making them think the players and the list  are better than they are. ffs it was so obvious we were just one of about 12 teams who would be fighting for a a place in the bottom half of the 8 and that was if they played out of their skins again,  and all went well.
we are a middling team how many times does it have to be said we needed to continue to build and we didnt. making finals papered over the cracks and one or two of us tried to tell people this all off season.
recruiting in the nd remains a huge problem  as does list managment and there are too many underperforming mature types being drafted.
does one feel justified for sticking to his guns. nope just gutted knowing what has transpired has set us back 3 yrs or more.

our trouble is we get 3 or 4 things right as far as list goes and then undo it all by getting 4 things wrong.

from  4k kilometres away i see things in black and white and dont get caught up in the emotion of it all.
basic and reliable criteria and processes  is all one needs when assesing players. its the  emotional pull and getting to close to the players that causes the problems. there can be  no favorite players, you either tick the boxes or enough of them or you dont get a look in or are gone.
ireckon we had some decent criteria in place when hardwick first came but it has become very obvious in key areas those criteria have gone out the window.its also obvious recruiting over the last yr in particular is way off kilter.

address recruiting address list management that is get better at both and ensure the environment is right to develop kids and we wont be having this discussion.

at the end of the day people think we had developed into a bloody good side and the truth was we have never ever become anything more than a middling team.
its a worry that those in charge have not it seems ever grasped this.

Your spot on claw. I just hope this draft we take 4 kids.  Id like us to trade out players for picks too so our 4 picks are below 40 if possible.

l can tell ya Dimma.

1 kick out of the backline to a contest at the 60 metre mark helps. Try it instead of playing keeping off. l seen it done once today at the 4th quarter with 30 seconds left in the game. stuffing Disgraceful. what are you teaching down there.

players who get the ball & blast it forward without looking into the open arms of a opponent. ELLIS>EDWARDS>& whoever else is on the replay OUT. Very UN-professional. l dont spend thousands of dollars each year to watch poo like that.

Teach the forwards how to be forwards. 3 huge forwards & the only lad l seen fly off the ground today was LENNON who kicked a goal with his 1st pressured kick & slotted it.
ALL I SEEN ALL DAY WAS HIGH FLYING DEFENDERS OUT MARKING 3 BIG FORWARDS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME SPEW

they over use the ball & when l say over use. They try to chain together handballs & are not moving  :banghead

if you can't coach kids the STEP DOWN & let a man do your job cause l'm over watching your poo. l aint going to live another 20 years waiting  :banghead

Think this week is bad, wait till we get beaten next week by GWS! Can't honestly see us getting close to them, we are a dead duck, demoralized beyond repair and mentally frail, we have gone backwards 5 years in half a season. Really don't think we can recover from this, end of season cannot come quick enough for the players, coaches and the long suffering supporters. :banghead :banghead

The worst thing about all of this is the fact that he is contracted for another 2 seasons after this. Unless there is a miracle turn around, its a lose - lose situation.

Mate spud is gone

Whether it happens this year or next it's a matter of time.

Posted this a month ago re: 2015

It will play out like this

Lose to the Blues and our season over a month in. Then the questions about Dusty and Cotchin will take over, bringing the club to its knees.

I give him until round 10, 2015

Possibly the worst decision the club has made, even more stupid than the Monkeyball experiment, was to give spud a 2 yr extension, a coach that no one else wanted

you are wrong mate, thought you were smarter than that.

This is the RFC club so you can expect this. Some meaningless wins at the tale end when the steam is out of the season resulting in a finish of between 9-12 or thereabouts. More bull poo during the off season about those wins being the catalyst for 2015 preparing us for more skata talk from the club.

Ah Angus we take mortgage on 17th stop repayments before the end of the year because we win 4 or 5 from mid July onwards only to start the repayments again in the off season. By season start 2015 we will own 17th spot and by round 4 we will be leasing 18th spot. It's called RFC contingency.
Then expect the Messiah Complex to hit the club hard.
The Skata Cycle. 32 years of Skata and counting. Plop Plop Plop.

We are just fortunate Brissy is a mess on and off at the moment and their debts are mounting.
It's what is keeping us from total embarrassment.
