Title: Hardwick's post-match media conference
Post by: mightytiges on May 31, 2014, 11:14:21 PM
Hardwick just had his post-match press conference:

* We're a mediocre football team at the moment. The spray was warranted.

* Offensively Essendon use the ball well but we weren't accountable and when you're smashed in the contested ball by 25 as well, you're not going to win footy games.

* They out-hunted us around the packs and scrimmages and got it moving forward.

* It was circa 2010 what we showed tonight. Rance would be disappointed with that turnover. He knows he is better than that.

* Our aim is win as many games as we can. That will continue.

* We couldn't penetrate that Essendon defensive bubble. Carlisle took the first two marks and we wished he had stayed forward. We played on too quick in the first quarter and played into their hands with the spares they had. We were more measured in the early part of that 2nd quarter.

* Will go through the game and try to build up their (players) confidence on Tuesday.

* The responsibility lies with me. I know we can play better. We are making too many basic errors. That reflects on me and the coaching stuff. We are making mistakes that we shouldn't be making at this level. The answer is training and more training.

* Vickery played fairly well today in the VFL and there are others we'll go through over the week. However, the reality is most of our best players are already in the side so we just need to get better.

Rolled the eyes.

If that's the case why waste a list space on Aaron Edwards?? Ricky Petterd?? Why would u take a list spot up by someone like this who is not in our best 22 and not a developing player to be in our best 22 in the future?

This is one of our big problems

We couldn't penetrate that Essendon defensive bubble. Carlisle took the first two marks and we wished he had stayed forward. We played on too quick in the first quarter and played into their hands with the spares they had. We were more measured in the early part of that 2nd quarter.

We have neither a good small forward or a good tall forward ATM.  Jake King playing well would solve it, so would Shedward if he was playing well ( I should capitalize that IF) but basically none of Griff, Edwards, Vickery or King are playing well or at all.  It just makes it too easy for defenses to man up and two or three team our dangerous forwards.

Maybe we play A Edwards instead of Shedwards to play off Jack, unless we play a kid to get games into them, which guarantees Jack will take the heat.

the concern is it sounds like hes not going to change the side but persevere with the duds that have over the yrs repeatedly crumbled when pressure is applied.
he cant see that most of those in the 22 have reached their ceiling and they are not going to get better.
the definition of madness is to do the same things over and over expecting a different result.

That last quote is probably more depressing than the match itself. What a way to motivate a list to try & improve - both the the incumbents and the reserves. Bloke simply has NFI.

Its funny reading what some people are saying that players have reached their peak level. The players NONE of them have peaked yet  so far this season apart from Rewoldt last week & l reckon he still could have kicked more by not using his football brain. They can rise several levels. But firstly you must remove the injured players to get the best out of the rest of the playing group. l found last night players wanting to come off for a rest. They Cotchin & Martin used more energy running to the interchange, Only for them  to be turned back several times. This is wasted energy & has to be fixed by the coaching staff. The player is out of the next contest already & there alone is lost leadership time when he could be pumping the side up after a goal & themselves preserving energy for the next contest. Injured players can not play at today's pace & if anyone thinks they can then they are deluded including many. The Coach & coaching staff, Fitness staff, & Doctor, & that runs right back to the President. You can't play injured players in today's game but we do. That takes a huge toll on the other players who have to battle with opposition players running off the injured team mates. You are better off taking a fit inexperienced player into the contest who might lack some pace at the elite level but can put some pressure on the opposition. This is possibly where players are presenting very poor skills & decision making because they are so fatigued. BUT that don't explain why the players present poor skills & decision making in the 1st quarters & that is where many are found out that they are simply not up too AFL level. Its as simple as that. You dont have to take it out on the players on the training track. You eliminate the weakness from the team & that is the players who can't give 4 quarters of football cause you are asking too much from all your other team mates who can't give 4 quarters because they doing half your job. #1 ELIMINATE WEAKNESS. #2 TEAM BALANCE. #3 MAN THEM UP ONE ON ONE. #4 LONG & DIRECT FOOTBALL FROM BACKLINE.

Great in theory TM unfortunately other clubs eliminated their weaknesses and we drafted them in so we have half the AFL weakest links.

We have 13 recycled players.

Maric, Chaplin, Thomas, Grigg, Houli, Hampson, so we are only playing 6 players

out of those 6, Hampson has been injured for weeks, Maric is not 100% & has played 1 AFL game this season. Thomas copped 2 hits & a huge hit in the balls  ;D Grigg should have been dropped weeks ago & has played 2 good games. Houli should be shot for being a imposter.

Why is she a useless cow?  The players are stuffing up, probably digging their heels in because most of em are not up to it, simple as that.  The money balls were never gonna be able to be anything but poly filler and its falling back out the cracks.  The good players are stuffing their bodies up trying to carry the rest of the slobs over the line and getting despondent, they know the team can't do what Hardwick and co want out there because they don't have the skills / fitness / will across the deck.  JR let out a bit more than a slip up with his intel leak to the media imo.

Yep agree only 6 played last night but there are 7 others taking up a list spot for us to unearth a kid through the Draft.  Tom Langdon is a perfect example. They happen every year. Kennedy Harris at Melbourne.  Shelton at St.Kilda.

We trim our fat and bring more fat in.

It was not circa 2010 it is deja vu 2002 what was displayed.

List is not good enough, hungry enough nor fit enough, and has peaked out at 5th.

Keep 4 of the top 5, trade those with currency, retire the 30+, cull the duds, and fully invest in the 14, 15 & 16 draft.

Yes well l agree. l would not have got A Edwards or would l get Hampson when there are plenty of young ruckmen in Victoria alone who could contest in the ruck & move around the ground more freely with better hands. Every footballer no matter what level will always have 1 excellent game at sometime.  l think RFC only bought him to have his high profile girlfriend around the club in a potential sponsors gathering for the club that she could bring. More of a money thing than football IMV. if l was at the club in the recruiting job l would be bringing nothing but young players even if they are the last pick in our draft at #99. l would not have taken Thomas but would have got Petterd which dumbfound me why they dont use him at the feet of Rewoldt when Kingy is out. Shane Edwards should be left in the forward pocket or HFF as he is good at crumbing & has speed. his proved it often but his not a midfielder. last night we got caught many times going forward with no-one down there  ;D only way to fix RFC is to cull the dead aging players & inject youth & continue to inject youth unless its a huge name player like a Roughhead or Franklin & seriously even l think they are just about done, These guys are all 200 game footballers now & 10 years or 200 games is just about the life span of any footballer unless you are a stuff & a hard worker like Harvey (Roos) Fletcher (Bombers) for example. Deledio is near at his capacity as is Newman overdue. Players are over trained & asked too much of these days. Its not enjoyable for these youngsters anymore & thats why the best footballers are playing in local comps with there mates. A young lad in Hamish Towns at the Churchill Football Club Seniors in the North Gippsland Football League is 19 & a package footballer who rips it up. You will never see him in the draft, But he be a larger Brent Harvey if you seen him. Gutzy & skilled hard runner with 2nd & 3rd efforts & a excellent kick & kicks goals under pressure. these are the players clubs need to be trying to talk them into going in the draft. Simply playing football with their mates in more important than the spotlight of the AFL & big money
