VFL Tigers defeated in thriller
John Lindon
June 14, 2014 3:21 PM

RICHMOND              1.4      2.6      7.12      11.14 (80)
NORTHERN BLUES     4.3     7.11     9.12      12.15 (87)

Goals: McBean 3, Williams 2, Lloyd 2, O’Hanlon 2, Arnot, Bathie
Best: Arnot, Young, Helbig, O’Hanlon, Lloyd, Batsanis

-------------------------------------------------------------

A stirring second half comeback saw the Tigers come agonisingly close to stealing a win over the Northern Blues, who held on to win by seven points at the ME Bank Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Nine goals to five in the second half helped Richmond remove a 33-point half time margin with Liam McBean booting three majors in his return from a broken finger.

Skipper Ross Young was a consistent contributor all day and collected a game-high 35 disposals. His outstanding work rate also saw him have six clearances and seven inside 50s.

The Tigers struggled to generate scoring opportunities early as the Blues gained control. A terrific gather and snap from McBean put the Tigers on the board in what was a tough first half, but the Blues inaccuracy saw the margin remain comfortable but not insurmountable.

Arnot’s run and carry and attack on the ball kept the Tigers in the game. He finished with 29 disposals (16 contested).

Three quick goals in the third term ignited the Tigers, who instantly began to lift. Brad Helbig yet again was a tough presence in packs and around the ground, finishing with 21 possessions and seven clearances.

Nathan Gordon’s hands were strong in difficult, slippery conditions while Cadeyn Williams again impressed with a solid performance.

Dynamic goal-sneak Sam Lloyd went in and out of the game at times but was dangerous with the ball in hand. His two important goals and willingness to get the ball moving quickly for the Tigers were pivotal to the fight back.

Brett O’Hanlon, who had 20 disposals, was a standout late in the game. He remained composed to kick two crucial goals and get his team within a point, but a defensive turnover and Blues goal ended the valiant Tigers comeback hopes.

Former Melbourne forward Aaron Davey had 15 touches in his first game for the VFL Tigers.

A bit alarming that Big Ben didn't even score a goal. I hope we haven't turned him into a head case.

but a defensive turnover and Blues goal ended the valiant Tigers comeback hopes.

We need a stronger coach for the Reserves. One who controls the game & not RFC players

From the Herald-Sun ...

The Blues led by more than 40 points during the third quarter before Richmond mounted a comeback that only minutes earlier had seemed unlikely.

Where sure handling had escaped Richmond forwards Liam McBean and Ben Griffiths for much of the match, balls began to stick with ease.

Tigers skipper Ross Young led the charge, combining with the silky skills of Brett O’Hanlon and tenacious Matthew Arnot to work their side into the contest.

Richmond drew within one point on the back of a passionate home crowd in the final minutes, only for a defensive blunder to undo their good work and gift Blaine Johnson the matchwinner.

Richmond coach Tim Clarke lamented his side’s opening half, admitting he thought they were set to storm over the top of the Blues in a frantic finish to the contest.

VFL coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the AFL-listed players performed at VFL level:

Matt Arnot
29 disposals (16 contested), 9 tackles, 1 goal
Matt continued his good form, he had a quiet first quarter and then really got going in the last three. Whether he’s playing forward or through the midfield, he was really on-song when hunting the ball.

Brett O’Hanlon
2 goals, 20 disposals
This week it was a pretty consistent four-quarter effort from Brett. He hit the scoreboard late when we really needed, it was really important from the team’s point of view. He’s a damaging player and starting to get fitness up, starting to play some good footy and really push for senior selection.

Brad Helbig
21 disposals (12 contested), 7 clearances, 5 rebound 50s
One of his better games for the year. He was terrific across half-back and through the midfield and again. Good to see him on ball for the first time in a few weeks and it’s probably something we’ll look at going forward.

Todd Banfield
10 disposals
Had a quiet day, and he struggled in the first half but had good energy. Moved him to half-back to give us some run and he played a good defensive role but we expect a better output.

Ben Darrou
16 disposals
Was beaten in the first quarter and then fought his way back to play a solid defensive game. They didn’t have a key forward so it was good for him to play on some smaller types.

Cadeyn Williams
2 goals, 21 disposals, 5 inside 50s
Played his best game for the year. His first half was quiet but got going in the second, we saw some really pleasing signs from him.

Nathan Gordon
20 disposals, 12 marks
Played one of his better VFL games. Been down on form but started well with his run and put in a really good four-quarter performance, which is what we expect.

Matt McDonough
18 disposals
Played a role on Jeff Garlett in the first half and kept him quiet. We need more offensive ball movement from him. He freed up in second half and got going with good run-and-carry.

Sam Lloyd
2 goals, 22 disposals, 6 inside 50s
Probably the best VFL game he’s played this year, he helped set up a number of goals and marked well. He was a key player for us during our second half comeback.

Ben Griffiths
13 disposals, 5 inside 50s
He was quiet early and well held. His ruck work was good in Orren Stephenson’s absence. He took a couple of big marks but we expect more.

Liam McBean
3 goals, 12 disposals
Was well held and couldn’t impact the game but managed to kick three goals. Much better in the second half but we expect a bigger and better effort because he’s been training a lot better.

Todd Elton
9 disposals
Todd was also well held. His ruck work was okay and he worked hard all day but we didn’t get the impact we need from him.

Pretty lukewarm by Clarke's standards, probably been instructed to start to prepare us for the delistings. . Banfield's definitely gone. Darrou & McDonough damned with faint praise.  Comments on the talls were telling.

Garlett specifically mentioned twice, unusual for an opposition player.... being watched closely by the club perhaps?

Here's a unique concept - how about developing midfielders in the midifeld ?

Na play forwards in the back line.

MIDs of the back line and forward pocket.

Its worked good for five years. If it ain't broke why fix it

Having a great year but still doesn't get a look in. Not sure what more he needs to do in the 2nds but it would be a shame if we don't see him in the seniors. Plays the way the coach likes so why not play him...strange.
