You want a 'left hook'? Hardwick not happy with Richmond 'soft' call
Ben Guthrie
June 12, 2014 11:38 AM

Don't ask Damien Hardwick if Richmond is soft. You may not like the answer

The Tigers coach also threatened the journalist who asked the question with a "left hook" - albeit in jest - if his line of questioning continued in that manner.

"You can't say that," Hardwick said on Thursday.

"You play AFL footy mate, you've got to be tough. No doubt."

The suggestion came after his side surrendered a 35-point half-time lead against North Melbourne last Sunday, eventually going down to the Kangaroos by 28 points.

That loss followed a 50-point belting by Essendon.

A major area for concern was the contested ball count, with the Tigers copping a smashing in the second half on Sunday (48-74), as the Kangaroos piled on 13 goals to three after the main break.

Training on Thursday centered around winning the hard ball, with a tough session that included full-scale tackling and plenty of aggression.

Captain Trent Cotchin trained strongly and has been passed fit despite tweaking his ankle against the Roos, while midfielder Dan Jackson is in the selection hunt after missing last week due to a hip issue.

Suspensions to Ty Vickery and Matt Thomas have also opened the door for veteran Chris Newman to make his return from an Achilles injury, while Dylan Grimes is also a chance to play.

More to come.

Comical that Newman would even be considered without coming thru the twos.
State of affairs.

Comical that with the season effectively over, we're going to keep playing Cotchin injured.

Would be interested to know the actual question that was asked

Question should have been (if it wasn't) "Damien, is your side mentally soft to give up a 35 point half time lead" as opposed to asking simply whether Richmond are just "soft"

Soft is about the worst tag a football side can be given whether mental or physical.
Right now our team is seen as one which is mentally weak and stops running.
Damien can bristle all he likes but it's his team and questions are rightly being asked of it.

Look, in a funny sort of a way, you are right Damien. Even the so called squibbs like Houli and Grigg are probably tougher than many of those that dish out these labels from the safety of sidelines.

But It's all relative, Damien. These arn't the people you need to be tougher than to win a premiership. Compared to the sides that will be going deep into September, your team is soft.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick’s fiery reaction after journalist asks if Tigers are soft
Warwick Green
From: Herald Sun

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has bristled at the suggestion some of his players don’t have an appetite for the contest, telling a television reporter “you were lucky you didn’t wear a left hook’’ for asking the question.

The reporter asked: “I’m not saying your players are soft or anything like that, but are there players in your group who just don’t like the contest?’’

Hardwick replied: “You can’t say that, mate. I could say that about your journalism. If you’re a soft journalist, you’re a terrible journalist. You play AFL footy, mate, you’ve got to be tough.
’’

At the end of the media conference, Hardwick offered the terse aside to the journalist.

Nevertheless, during the media conference at the club’s Punt Road base he conceded that the team’s main problem over the past two weeks was not winning contested ball.

Hardwick said “the contested ball one is the big one for us. If we won’t win contested ball like most sides, you’re not going to win games.

“The fact is, if you can’t win the ball, you’ve got to defend for a long period of time,

“We’ve just got to continue to work on that contested ball part of our game. It was really disappointing in that second half (against North Melbourne last Sunday) to lose it like we did,’’ he said.

After leading by 35 points at halftime the Tigers conceded 13 goals to three and lost the contested-possession count 143-120.

“We just couldn’t get our hands on the ball to get our offensive game going, which means you’re defending for a long period of time, and eventually the dam wall’s going to break, which was what we experienced in the third quarter,’’ Hardwick said.

He suggested Richmond would throw its best inside midfielders into the centre square against Fremantle on Saturday afternoon, but the issue was that some players did not reproduce their best form “on a quarter-by-quarter basis, and then you’re looking at Plan B and Plan C’’.

“Unfortunately, when those to plans don’t work you go back to Plan A and start again.’’

Asked to elaborate on what the back-up plans were, he replied: “Plan B and Plan C, mate, that’s all we’ve got.’’
He said the Tigers would continue to fight and try to march up the ladder, because that was what AFL football was all about.

“We feel it will turn,’’ he said. “We’re getting better at stages, (but) our consistency is probably the thing that’s letting us down at the moment over the course of one quarter or a 20-minute period, as we saw on the weekend.’’

Hardwick said captain Trent Cotchin’s ankle was fine, former skipper Chris Newman had put his hand up for selection, and that he would consider using Brett Deledio more through the midfield.

He said the Tigers had not turned their attention to long-term development

“Our focus is still on winning footy games. We’re a better side than three and eight. Our record will indicate otherwise, but we feel we’re a better side than that.

We're a better side than 3-8. Our record will indicate otherwise, but we feel we're better than that."

Seriously Dimma please stop trotting that one out. We're 3 and 8. That's where we're at. We've lost to woeful teams like Bulldogs , Melbourne and Essendon. We were lucky to beat Carlton. That leaves us with wins over GWS and a depleted Brisbane.
We're no good at the moment and that , Dimma , is where we're at and your job is to do something about it. Don't talk , DO !

My sentiments exactly. The 'we're a better side than that' line is driving me insane. A 'better side' would achieve results. We haven't been able to cover injuries and we haven't been able to stop opposition momentum. Our % of 94.4 is incredibly flattering because had it not been for the GWS game it would be a lot lower. We are a 3-8 side. No ifs and buts or in theory. We are 3-8 and that is that. If we could balance the ledger by year's end it would be an absolute miracle.

It would be and with Dimma's current mindset ( he's in denial ) balancing the ledger would paper over the cracks.
I'm all for winning games and despise tanking but I don't want to see any players or coaches contracts extended on the back of us winning a few games in the run home.

Hang on a sec.

It's a question that thousands of members and supporters ponder EVERY week.

Here, we have a jerk practically saying that, if we DARE ask this question, he'll TRY and throw a left hook at us.

stuffn idiot.

Come to oer and do a Q and A with US, you weak prick.

Wants to go around with his head in a bucket of sand because he's a failure.

No wonder the list performs insipidly.

Fancy the players "suggesting" to the coach that, perhaps he could be tougher on them.

This club is out of control.
No leaders, No leadership, a failed coach and they don't look like doing a damn thing about it.
LMAOISM.
Grab some popcorn and watch on while it implodes overnight.
