The absence of Richmond's most influential leaders this season has allowed Trent Cotchin to accelerate his skills as captain, says coach Damien Hardwick.
A repeat finals appearance is all but out of the question for the Tigers, with Richmond winning just three of its opening 12 games.
While Hardwick won't solely blame injuries for Richmond's plight, the fact the likes of Ivan Maric, Brett Deledio, Alex Rance and Daniel Jackson have missed chunks of football hasn't helped.
But if there's a positive to be gleaned from the Tigers' recent form, it's that Hardwick believes Cotchin – after his leadership was publicly questioned earlier in the season – has stood up.
Hardwick said the Tigers revisited their game plan over the round eight bye after a number of elements dropped off in the month leading up their week off.
He said while the way they were playing remained unacceptable, there had been improvement since the break.
"There were a couple of areas that we trained heavily in trying to improve over the summer and at the start of the season, but unfortunately if you're working a lot in one area, you're probably letting slip another," he said.
"What we found in our game plan, we just weren't executing it to the level we'd like.
"You can have as many injuries as you want but the reality was, our players and our coaching staff, we weren't delivering on what we wanted overall.
"From round nine onwards we've addressed a few of those issues and funnily enough our numbers have started to improve.
"We haven't won the games we require but overall our standard of footy I think has improved over those weeks."
Hardwick said the Tigers would continue to refrain from giving players games if they hadn't earned them in the second half of the season.
He also said the improvement had to come from across the board for the team to move forward.
"We don't want to point fingers – everyone can improve, we accept that as a coaching group and a playing group," he said.
"We've disappointed our supporters, our members, these type of people who come week in, week out.
"The way we're playing is not good enough and it's unacceptable, so we've got to make sure we earn the respect back of our supporters and also the AFL in general and play the way we know we can play."

That's only if you're a poo coach and time manager
"What we found in our game plan, we just weren't executing it to the level we'd like."
So..... You didn't find it?!
There's a sign..... Right there.
"You can have as many injuries as you want but the reality was, our players and our coaching staff, we weren't delivering on what we wanted overall."
Weren't ????
You are now ??
"From round nine onwards we've addressed a few of those issues and funnily enough our numbers have started to improve."
Round nine is a good time to address some issues, Damien.
Sadly those issues are back from injury prob this week.
"We haven't won the games we require but overall our standard of footy I think has improved over those weeks."
You would have thought incorrectly then.

This is the gold tho

A bit more from Dimma ....
When do you start thinking about 2015 - players going for ops and bringing players in?
Look, as a coaching staff, you have one eye on the future but where we are at as a footy club we need to win footy games. Our biggest thing, and we've disappointed our supporters, our members, these type of people that come week in week out. The way we are playing isn't good enough and that's unacceptable. So we need to earn back the respect of our supporters and the AFL in general and play the way we know we can play. We know our best is good enough but unfortunately we've been far below that. That's my job as coach to get us there and it's the players job on the weekend to perform. We've just got to make sure we play our best side as possible and get our players playing. We've got some young players we'd like to give an opportunity to but the reality is you've got to earn your jumper at our footy club. You know we've gone down that path of playing blokes that probably haven't deserved so but at the moment you've got to earn the right to play.
Have you ever let a coaches' box thinking 'hmmm, I didn't coach that well today'?
Yeah you do. There isn't a bigger self-assessment than in the match committee room. We record the coaches' box (a video camera is set up to record what is said in the box during a game) and look at decisions we made that weren't great or decisions that worked well. Coaches are constantly assessing what they do before assessing the players.
Dusty's handball rushed behind?
We would've been hoping it was a free if the opposition did that. I was happy with the concept that it was deliberate because it was too far out. I was also happy with the dialogue between our players and the umpires. There should be more of that (a thorough explanation of why a free was paid).
Caller question: Where do you see Vickery playing long term at our footy club - as a ruckman or as a key forward?
At this stage we see him more as a ruck in the short term. Like Paul Salmon did later in his career, when Ty grows into his body and gets his shape up and going, he'll force his way into the ruck. He's very clever around stoppages and very clever around the ground so we look forward to that happening.
Rumours of disharmony? Does it frustrate you?
I get really upset about that as I've never felt more united as a footy club than I do now. We have outstanding leadership through Peggy, Brendon and all the way down. We want to be performing better make no mistake about that and we demand we've got to get better. Reality is we know where we are at and we know where we are going and it's one thing we've been strong on as a footy club and we're united on that in getting us better. I'm really strong on that we're in a good position going forward. We've just got to make sure we continue to demand more of ourselves to get better.
Sydney game?
We just ask our supporters to get along to the 'G on Friday night. We know we haven't played as well as we can and the crowd was down on the weekend. I know we'll give a good account of ourselves this week to get the four points.

A T. T H E. M O M E N T......
but that will change soon enough.

He simply has NFI - pee him, Heckyl & Jeckyl list managers, the useless fitness staff & the quack medicos off before they do any more damage.

The Tigers have improved in several key areas since the bye, mostly the weak points that many outside the club had identified – skill level and forward chemistry.
Despite losing to Melbourne, Essendon, North Melbourne and the Dockers – but smashing GWS – since round eight, the Tigers have leapt to second in the AFL for disposal efficiency (up from 10th) and have been No.3 in the league for scores per inside 50 (up from 16th) and No.1 for marks inside 50 (up from ninth).

Reckon SEN were gutless not asking the tough questions
As I said we hate the spin and there's a lot of spin from a lot of people
-
what a wank - is deluded and would rather ruin next season by playing injured players now all in the name of a few cheap wins - 9th with a bullet hey dimma? The fact he actually truly believes the supporters would rather ruin players like Morris for next year just to win a few meaningless games leaves me :gobdrop
-
Best 9th ever coming up :clapping
