With Dean Cox announcing he is going to retire, the Eagles are obviously going to try and use emotion to get themselves over the line this Friday night.

I'm not sure 'Do it for big Cox' will motivate many players.

Another win to the "wait until the pressure is off and then play good footy" Tigers.

Didn't watch the footy on the weekend in particular the Saints?
Hayes is playing til the end of the season but it still impacted
So your "mute point" could be a valid point

THESE two teams have underperformed this year and this game is an important test as both are trying to prove they are improving late in the season. The Tigers beat Port Adelaide impressively before the bye while the Eagles outlasted the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The Tigers stunned West Coast at Patersons Stadium last year, kicking six goals to none in the second term to set-up a 41-point win. The Eagles will have the added motivation of Dean Cox's looming retirement. Both sides have struggled in key indicators this year. Both teams are ranked in the bottom eight for inside 50s, tackles and contested possessions this season>
WHERE AND WHEN: Patersons Stadium, Friday July 25, 6.40pm AWST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R10, 2013, Richmond 16.7 (103) d West Coast 8.14 (62) at Patersons Stadium
R5, 2012, West Coast 16.11 (107) d Richmond 14.13 (97) at Etihad Stadium
R20, 2011, West Coast 22.15 (147) d Richmond 14.6 (90) at Patersons Stadium
R12, 2010, Richmond 19.12 (126) d West Coast 11.11 (77) at MCG
R22, 2009, West Coast 17.23 (125) d Richmond 6.9 (45) at Patersons Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Richmond defeated West Coast at Patersons Stadium last year but it was a rare win at the venue. The sides have met 16 times there with the Eagles winning 13.
2. Both the Eagles and the Tigers have struggled taking the ball inside 50 this year. West Coast is ranked 14th in the AFL and Richmond 15th. Both are averaging just 49 entries per game.
3. Richmond has been a poor tackling side this year, ranked 16th with an average of 64.2 per game. West Coast are ranked 12th at 68 per game.
4. Tigers star forward Jack Riewoldt has enjoyed playing West Coast kicking 25 goals in eight games. He has kicked four or more three times including a club record haul of 10 in 2010 at the MCG.
5. Richmond has really struggled in contested possession in 2014. The Tigers are ranked 17th with an average of 134.2. West Coast is ranked 13th at 140.4 per game.
6. Neither team has a player ranked in the top 40 of the Official AFL Player Ratings. Nic Naitanui (41st) is the highest ranked Eagle but has dropped outside the top 40 for the first time since round 10, 2012. Brett Deledio is the highest ranked Tiger at 53.
Prediction: West Coast by six points

After watching another year of the British Open Golf, I'll never bag the camerawork of any other sport again.
I reckon the BBC just sets up cameras and lets whichever punter happens to be walking past at the time try and point it at the ball.

My biggest gripe (not the only one) with Ch7 is that they continually pan out to the extra long shot and it makes it bloody impossible to see what's happening in play at the ball. It's a useless view because it gives you no better appreciation of the play. You may as well be watching the game from a blimp 5km's above the ground.

West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson aiming to kill Richmond Tigers’ ‘mojo’ ahead of Round 18 clash
Chris Robinson
Herald-Sun
July 24, 2014 1:29PM
WEST Coast coach Adam Simpson is likely to know fairly early in tomorrow night’s clash how his team is tracking in taking away Richmond’s new-found “mojo”.
The Tigers come to Patersons Stadium having won their past three matches to offer some salvation to supporters amidst an underwhelming 2014 campaign.
And Simpson has targeted limiting Richmond’s fast starts as the key to ending that streak and keeping the WA club’s slim hopes of playing finals football alive.
Richmond has won its past four first quarters, averaging almost five goals per term in that time.
In contrast, the Eagles have conceded three or more goals in 11 first terms this year – and gone on to lose all bar two of those games.
Simpson said the key to stopping the Tigers was stifling any hope of a fast start.
“I think they’ve got their mojo back,” the West Coast coach said this morning.
“(In the) last five weeks, their numbers, regardless of the wins and losses, are really high in everything from contested ball to time in possession, clearances, scores from stoppages, all the things that made them such a good team last year.
“They’re back. They’re in a really good space. They did a number on us last year over here. It’s going to be a difficult game.
“They start really well and time in possession is a big thing for Richmond. We know that they like to control the ball. But they also have been really good in contested ball as well.”
The Eagles will target star trio Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Brett Deledio, with Mark Hutchings likely to spend time with one of the trio in a run-with role after an encouraging effort against Lion Pearce Hanley a fortnight ago.
West Coast has made four changes to the side that beat Brisbane , with Josh Kennedy returning from suspension and retiring big man Dean Cox also added.
Mitch Brown returns from a two-game stint on the sidelines after a knee injury, while Brad Sheppard has also been recalled.
Scott Lycett, Callum Sinclair, Blayne Wilson and Jacob Brennan are the players to make way.
Midfielder Sharrod Wellingham failed to earn a call-up after being dropped for the Lions clash. Wellingham gathered 26 disposals for East Perth that weekend.
“It’s been hopefully good learning here for Sharrod,” Simpson said.
“He’s real excited about what he can do and what he’s learning off the field and off the track and game day as well, so we think there is some terrific upside from Sharrod and we’re not writing him off in any stretch.
“He’ll be available for tomorrow night and if it’s not this week, hopefully it’s next week.”
Simpson said Cox would not play in each of the club’s final six games, but stressed tomorrow night’s game would not be his farewell.

The Eagles have been ordered to wear their white away strip tonight while we'll get to wear our traditional black jumper with yellow sash :thumbsup. Eagle fans aren't happy about it either ;D.
AFL guernsey clash: It won't be all white on the night for disgruntled Eagles
Daniel Cherny
The Age
July 25, 2014
West Coast has urged its fans to voice their discontent to the AFL, claiming the league has forced the club to wear its predominantly white alternate jumper in Friday night's clash against Richmond at Patersons Stadium, despite being the home team.
The AFL told Fairfax Media on Thursday the Eagles had chosen to don their third-choice strip after being asked whether they would prefer to wear their predominantly royal blue away jumper or the white strip.
The club denies that version of events.
"No, we didn't have a choice," said West Coast communications manager Gary Stocks. "We aren't happy with the current situation."

Richmond will wear its traditional guernsey - black with a yellow sash - in the clash.
The unusual step of asking the home team to wear an alternate guernsey took place after last year's night game between the sides. In that match, the Eagles wore their home strip consisting of navy, white and yellow panels with stylised eagle on the front, while the Tigers wore their traditional jumper.
The similarity between the jumpers led to confusion for many watching the game, and the AFL wanted to avoid a repeat this year.
The AFL website's own match report said after the clash in 2013: "Unless you could recognise a particular player in this match, it was nearly impossible to work out whether it was an Eagle or a Tiger who had gathered the ball and emerged from a pack.''
Richmond's alternate jumper is unsuitable for matches against the Eagles because of its similarities.
West Coast fan Nathan responded angrily to the news his side would be wearing white. "This is appalling and a disgrace by the club's administration for kowtowing to it!" he said on Twitter.
Another Eagles supporter tweeted: "That's outrageous! Teams like Richmond should be FORCED to have a proper clash guernsey!"
An AFL spokesman said: "If we believe that there's a clash between the primary guernseys of the clubs, and in this case there is one, normally the home club would have the right to its guernsey. In this case, Richmond's alternate guernsey is still a clash, in our view.''
Stocks urged West Coast supporters to make their voices heard.
"Clearly unhappy fans. We know that and agree! Abusive messages won't get it done. The club did not make the call on this! #workingonit," he tweeted.
"I reiterate we hear you and we will fix it. Need people power to vent to AFL. #goeagles"
A Richmond spokesperson said the club was merely adhering to the AFL's instructions - via a memo at the start of the week - after being informed its players should wear their home guernsey.

Before Dean Cox announced he was retiring, I was tipping us to win this as the Eagles were just going. However, now I think the Eagles have pumped themselves up on emotion for tonight. That's why they've brought back Cox into their side. Win, lose or draw, he'll most likely be dumped again after tonight's game.

Lids would've burnt the Eagle opponent off if it was a dry track where you could bounce properly.

Conditions terrible

-
Be a good test of how well coached this side is to see how the playing style adjusts to the conditions.
-
How on earth did morris not get a free

I'd say with the Morris one it was because it happened on the blind side to the umpire.

Wet weather footy Tiges. No short dicky handballs in a row :banghead.

Handball bloody happy.......under 12s know to kick the bloody thing in wet weather

Handball count high = poor coaching.

Might be time for the runners to go out and explain to the players that its actually wet. Handball ring a rosy is not ideal in these conditions, kick the effing thing!!

Miles coughlan like

That was dumb Ellis (although in these conditions it was soft).

Love the way thw boys have tackled natnui tonight
Nat's handling in the wet for a big man is sublime, looks dry when he picks it up.

Nic Nat is first class that's for sure. Weagles fans should thank Vickers though, now they got a commemorative Dean Cox Face print in the subiaco turf they can all take plaster casts of with their kids, great souvenir, better than a signature.

Gotta say I thought the umpiring was a bit dodgy tonight, is the taking the ball on the full from a thow in and getting tackled still holding the ball?
-
WE WINS!!!!! EAD FERALS
-
Think Miles has been the difference, each possession is full of class, we have definitely picked up a gem here.

Miles is a ripper, tough little poo too, doesn't mind getting pole axed to win his own ball.
-
Too bad the season didn't start 4 weeks ago.
too bad we have zero depth and couldn't cover Maric,Rance and lids's absence.
Too bad dimmer didn't rate Miles.
Too bad we got Hampson.
-
Good win. Proud of Vickery for thumping Cox. Its about time we had some mongrels in our team. :clapping

x2 l loved every minute of this game :gotigers l loved them ripping that Eagles jumper to bits about 5 of them attacking.
They are on the right track Blood some more of these players
-
don't know if I support king hits, but certainly some mongrel hasn't been seen at punt road since the days of Stafford and prior to that when Balmy greeted Geoff southeby

The intention I applaud maybe not so much the execution.
I think it'll be good for Ty. Barry Hall was a good ordinary player but his presence and fear pushed his aura and perception further. Hope it happens with Ty too
-
10 Tigers had ten or more contested possessions last night:
Miles 15
Lids 14
Thomas 14
Houli 13
Foley 13
Dusty 12
Ellis 11
Maric 11
Cotch 10
Conca 10
And 222 tackles combined was the 4th highest tackle count in history in an AFL match. 12 Tiges had 5 or more tackles. Foley and Thomas had 10 each.

What a great win

2nd quarter, Morris and Batch smash tackling Darling over the boundary line.
Just can't work out where that intent was earlier this year.
Batch has improved each week since being in the senior team.
Amazing what faith does to a bloke.
-
That's why they've brought back Cox into their side. Win, lose or draw, he'll most likely be dumped again after tonight's game.
He was, but not in the manner he was expecting!! ;D
-
How good would nicnac look in the yellow and black...

Too bad the plodders only fire up when Tyrone decks someone

too bad we still only beat bottom 8 sides or a plummeting Port.

Too bad the draft is set up to reward the last places and for ddecades the club has failed to understand the system.

Batch is the missing link in the backline, They play alot better when he is in the side & he adds aggression to a side that lacks it. Dea will never get a game when batch is fit & l see him improving more over games. l rate him very highly. Remember l said that if he fails. ;D
-
What about Bach AND deaMatt is same back line?

Dimma would not play Dea in the side after what he viewed today ;D
-
Wonder what he made of griggs effort

That;s right!

not very much at all. leave Grigg where he is.

out Lloyd or Gordon,
In Grigg
You know its going to happen ;D

probably the same flight as the players returning?
if you can, sit next to TY and spend the whole trip outlining the world according to claw to him, should prove a fascinating interaction
.
;D
Nope
They were on the Virgin red-eye as required with the AFL's deal
I only fly QANTAS and was on that one ;D
Anyway onto the game
Was super impressed with Jake Batchelor. Growing in confidence every week. His tackling is ferocious.
Last night proved again how much we missed Maric. Gee that bloke is just such a sensational leader. He was up against it all night but his influence on the blokes around him cannot and should not be under estimated.
Let's not even go over the non playing of Miles for half a season again.
Want to give credit to a player who I am usually not a rap for and that's Ellis. Even though we still had plenty of those dinky little kicks last night. He took another step forward for me at least in the attack on the footy stakes. Yes still stood back a couple of times when he needed to attack the contest but compared to what his done for the majority of the season thought last night was his best game when it came to attacking the ball. We'll done :clapping Needs to become the norm now.
And Dusty Martin is a star and is just a natural footballer. Wish we had a few more of him
-
Vickery swaggers into town and kings their hero.
Will be the making of him, cop his whack and then have a massive pre-season and kick 50+ next year.
For a second I agreed with this, but instead of embracing it, he's let it get inside his head. The way he reacted in the 2nd half and the apology shows it doesn't sit comfortably with him and has become a negative with him.
-
I don't mean the making of him in terms of the specific incident, which was a bit ordinary.
But I think it will give him confidence that he is now an imposing character and he will start to live that, as well as making opposition much more uncomfortable around him.
Infamy has its privileges.

a couple of things.
Firstly Batchelor is becoming the player we hoped for. i cant help but think his body has matured. he has always played tall but i recall standing next to him shortly after he was drafted at training compared to a couple of months ago and this kid is significantly taller but also has a stong, wiry and lean build conducive for speed and contested ball.
secondly, i think Martin has become our best, x~factor player by far. cotchin and deledio do the team things, Martin one kick away from goal is near unstoppable.

I understand - probably missed that opp now, I think with his genuine remorse and apology, the rest of the comp will know that's not him and wont be looking over their shoulder nervously like they may have..

Recorded the game and tried watching it a couple of times....talk about a snooze fest. :sleep :sleep

Tried doing the same. I struggled watching any game when I know the result as it is. Deleted it off the IQ now anyway.
