Newman: Back to our best
Kendall Fulton
SEN
9.53AM  24-7-2014

The Tigers take on West Coast at Patersons Stadium this Friday night with renewed confidence.

After a poor start to the season and losing four straight games in June, Richmond have bounced back with three consecutive wins and look to have finally recaptured their 2013 form.

The boys from Punt Rd have pumped out some big stats over the past four weeks. They’re the number one for possessions and stepped up in every category that's got to do with retention of the ball.

Chris Newman spoke on SEN this morning and was asked if they've made a change or tweak to their game plan.

"That was our strength last year so we haven’t really changed anything. We’re just executing our game plan better. It helps when you bring personnel in too. Anthony Miles has really helped in that area, for a young kid to come in and win as much contested possession as he's done has really given us first use."

Richmond have been far from their best all year however Newman is happy with their recent form and said he wouldn't change anything right now.

"Earlier in the year we kind of went away from winning that contested ball, not that that wasn't our focus we just weren't executing it.

"That’s what we stand for. The Richmond way is contested football but not only that it’s playing with confidence and taking the game on.

"Our strengths are our ball use and our execution of that and that’s starting to go really well now.

"We've come a long way from the start of the season but we've still got a long way to go."

Even with Richmond's recent good form they still go into Friday night's game as underdogs at ($2.50) vs West Coast ($1.54).

“I’ve had a bit of an interrupted season this year with a couple of things, which has been disappointing, but I’ve always had trust in my body,” Newman told SEN.

“I feel like by body has held up reasonably well over the years.

“That’s something you obviously need to keep going - some continuity on the track.

“You don’t want to get to the stage where you’re limping over the line.  You have to weigh up those things, but my body’s been good to me so far, so hopefully I can get through the next six weeks.”

Good to see the club has been honest with his performance this year. Great.

Seriously mate show some respect! We have very little senior experience and Newman our former Captain should be afforded due respect. He has earned the right to discuss his future with the club.

Up to the club to let Newie know.

100% agree, athletes are competitive beasts and it is only natural they want to keep going.

A strong man would have the courage to do what was best for the club however.

Malcolm Blight moved on Crows royalty when he arrived, Chris Scott moved on Chapman, Malthouse laid a gauntlet down for Judd.

What sort of man is Hardwick?

there may be some good reasons to keep newman, not that i can find one. but experience and maturity  is not one of them.

quality consistency, and real depth are our problems.

what nonsense caro comes up with.if every player bar king who has retired went around again next yr we would have the following number of players at their respective ages at the start of next season.
24yo - 3
25yo - 4
26yo - 6
27yo - 2
28yo - 3
29yo - 3
30yo - 0
31yo - 1
32yo - 2
thats a total of 24 players who fall into the mature thru vet category, if we are short of experience on the list i will go heave.if we lack leadership and guidance with that number of players in those age categories it says one thing which i will leave for you people to figure out.
one thing for sure though, we dont lack for mature players who should be leading the way.

It has nothing to do with Newman's age for me.

It has to do with the fact that he is no longer good enough at the level and has little prospect of improving.

Very true.  He still has the ability mind you but just cannot produce it often enough to warrant a position in the team.

And hasn't really led by example in the last 2 or so years either.
Broke down in the final cos his body couldn't handle the pressure.
How many kick ins did he put onto the chest of the opposition 30 out?
A huge reason our back line would stagnate and go backwards as it was him that wod set it up that way.
A faceless former captain.
It was as tho he wasn't even captain.
For me, it's also about these things.

If he plays again can't have him in back line, surely

In his defense (sorta) his body was already broken down before the final. The club was soft and played him when he clearly wasn't right (ankle injury IIRC) and if Newman is the supposed leader people claim he is he should have put his hand up and said "I'm not right". Who knows what that could of done for our season this year with the thought of their former captain yet again not playing finals on the players minds (seriously, who knows with this group).
