What a disgrace!

Why should the great unwashed get a free kick while the more affluent members of the football watching community make the sport what it is with our contributions to the media outlets, who in turn fund the game?

Callan Ward says GWS Giants out to earn back respect following heavy loss to Richmond in Round 10

Amy Stevenson
Daily Telegraph
July 29, 2014 6:45PM

GREATER Western Sydney will be out to prove the point that they can’t be pushed over when they take on Richmond for a second time on Saturday.

After a humiliating 113-point loss to the Tigers in Round 10, co-captain Callan Ward said the club is ready to make amends for the last time the two teams met.

“It’s a day I’d like to forget to be honest with you, it was a very poor performance so hopefully this weekend we can come out and really take it up to them,” Ward said.

“Every game is a game we can prove ourselves, we’re still trying to make it in the AFL world to try and get respect of the opposition clubs.

“Richmond is one team we need to get respect from especially after last time.

“Our form against them hasn’t been great and last time was extremely disappointing for us as a football club.”

While an unfortunate injury toll has sidelined six of their best 22 for the rest of the season, including Jeremy Cameron, Lachie Whitfield and Tim Mohr, Ward believe this gives an opportunity for some of their best reserve players to join the team.

“We have been really unlucky this year especially in the last month where we have lost guys for the season.

“I don’t think we have had a solid six defenders in our backline for the whole year, we keep losing players unfortunately.

“But we do have guys playing good footy in the reserves that can come in and take their spots and prove their worth.”

Heath Shaw will undergo a test on Wednesday and if fit will be a strong chance to come back this weekend.

Shaw has missed the past month due to concussion resulting in a minor brain bleed after a sickening collision with Sydney Swan Kurt Tippett in Round 15.

Preview: Richmond v Greater Western Sydney
Jennifer Phelan

July 30, 2014

RICHMOND has enjoyed a good month. After losing four games in a row and sliding out of finals contention, the Tigers have won their past four with the most recent a 17-point triumph over West Coast last Friday night. While they still won't play into September and are 12th on the ladder with seven wins, there's been encouraging signs recently. Greater Western Sydney has lost its last four after notching back-to-back wins over the Brisbane Lions and Carlton. The Giants are above Melbourne and St Kilda on the ladder on percentage - only narrowly above the Demons.

WHERE AND WHEN: the MCG, Saturday August 2, 4.40pm AEST

LAST FIVE TIMES
R10, 2014, Richmond 24.10 (154) d GWS Giants 5.11 (41) at Spotless Stadium
R22, 2013, Richmond 25.13 (163) d GWS Giants 6.6 (42) at Spotless Stadium
R12, 2012, Richmond 11.20 (86) d GWS Giants 12.2 (74) at Spotless Stadium

THE SIX POINTS

1. Should the Giants win, it will be their first victory at the MCG in six tries. The closest they came to a win was against Hawthorn (seven points) in round 11.

2. The Tigers smashed the Giants in round 10, with Jack Riewoldt booting 11 goals on their way to the 113-point win.

3. Despite winning only four games, the Giants continue to be a strong centre clearance side. They're ranked 1st in the competition with an average of 13.6 per game.

4. In comparison, the Tigers have struggled. They're ranked 12th with 11.7 per game.

5. In the last month the Tigers' wins have been by an average score of 95 points, while they've conceded only 68 per game.

6. Dustin Martin is climbing the Official AFL Player Ratings, brought to you by Gatorade, after dropping to No.90 earlier this season. He's now ranked 77th in the competition.

Prediction: Richmond by 25 points

Giventheconditions for us last week in perth and GWS slight improvement since last time we met it I believe it will be a close game. Could be wrong but the expectation we should smash them at home just reeks typical richmond failure  ::)

Just ran a ladder predictor and if we win all the games and lose to Sydney, I have 8th coming down to percentage.

Must win this by over 10 goals.

Umpires have got to crack down on GWS, they are holding Our players illegally off the ball more than I have ever seen in a game of footy. Griff has been blocked off the ball 4 times, Martin being held and blocked 20 metres off the ball FFS do something abt it, we need percentage

Don't normally have a whinge about umpires, but today one teams players have eyes for the ball, the other team is just continually putting illegal blocks and holds on, off the ball. If I was dimma I'd be sending Cotch over to the umps to point it out

U serious? Ive got a lot of time for conca, but this is the worst game Ive EVER seen him play, his disposal has been atrocious... and yes smith gave him a little cheapie uppercut when he had him in a headlock but that was a very dumb retaliation, you don't go clip some from behind

Not tackling, nor any kind of hard footy being displayed by us.
Allowing them easy uncontested possession.  No pressure at all.
It's embarrassing to watch.

Field kicking % may be ok but I don't think any of them in our team know how to kick to advantage in the forward 50.

It's not rocket science!!!

We are useless tacklers, we are hopeless kicking to advantage and we don't know how to shephard.

Our brand of footy is poo.......too many skill errors and turnovers......we have potentially the best midfield in the comp but they make monumental skill errors at the worst of times.......this should have been coached out f them.......we are coached negatively.......kick to pockets....kick backwards and sideways........don't play the kids because they don't deserve a game but continue to reward mediocrity...........unfortunately our foot soldiers are not just good enough.........I hope we are put out of our misery soon

I agree. I recon he just tried to get him high up on the back but it slide up. Not a great look but I don't think he meant to hit him in the head.
How's Brad Johnson, recons it's one of the cheapest things he has seen in footy.  :banghead get a grip you flog!!!!
That fact that the Giants bloke ran off after their scuffle meant he was going to get some reaction from behind. You can not expect, just because you turn your back on someone after you have just got a bloke in a headlock that you are not going to get a bit of a whack.
I don't rate Conca at all but he is not a dirty player.

The thing about conca.
Is, by all means do something like that in retaliation for having your jumper pulled over your head. exposing your gut while the other bloke gouges you.

I have no problem with dog acts if you yourself have been dogged.

Having said that, one has to continue to be that dog player and not the one that sits under the kitchen table licking it's balls in embarrassment and shame.

Go on and have a season best game, which shouldn't be hard for this malaka, don't fade out like Vickery and poo your stuffen pants.

Mentally soft as whipped cream.

Im happy to at least see that some of our players have some poo in them and they can do aggressive acts, no one has feared Richmond for 30 years, its time opposition players feared for their safety on the field of battle.

Don't normally have a whinge about umpires, but today one teams players have eyes for the ball, the other team is just continually putting illegal blocks and holds on, off the ball. If I was dimma I'd be sending Cotch over to the umps to point it out

x 2

And as Tim lane pointed out in his article about Vickery, if the stinking flouro maggot had done his job correctly then Conca would have received a free kick and no retaliation necessary (not that I'm sticking up for Conca or the whack) but the pampered lollipop coloured stuffing princesses get away with stuffing our game over with their s-hit decisions and interpretations and are never held to account.

Highest tackler: Thomas and Houli with 3. GWS had Greene with 10 and another eight with 3 or more tackles.
Pretty pathetic

Our brand of footy is pooe.......too many skill errors and turnovers......we have potentially the best midfield in the comp but they make monumental skill errors at the worst of times.......this should have been coached out f them.......we are coached negatively.......kick to pockets....kick backwards and sideways........don't play the kids because they don't deserve a game but continue to reward mediocrity...........unfortunately our foot soldiers are not just good enough.........I hope we are put out of our misery soon
This post has too many ............'s

I thought Jake spending the 3rd quarter in the outer was the most exciting thing of the night, closely followed by the light tower going out. I sent an SMS to the crowd behaviour line to get them to make sure that it wasn't a GWS fan flicking the switch.

You mean light towers WP. ;D

I was thinking of the game been finished on Tuesday night much like the debacle at Waverley back in 1996. As usual the umpiring was baffling.  The inconsistency is killing the game and added to pricing, ASADA and the fixturing there are alot of disenchanted fans out there. :-\

No surprise we played to the level of our opposition. It's what we always do. Yesterday's game was bruise free trash footy at its worse. Just 31 tackles for the whole team summed up our lack of intensity and defensive accountability. We just went through the motions and did what we had to do to stay enough in front and get the win. We won on the back of our 2nd quarter and that's it. Dish out the same rubbish next week and the Bombers will touch us up.

Looked a very tired outfit today.

I reckon the WCE must have draine them a lot. GWS off a bye probably nice and fresh by comparison.

Ugly game. But will take it.

Rance was mercurial again.

Agree with this, looked like last weeks road trip and wet conditions took a lot out of us. Take the win and run and yes, Rance is a gun!

That was a dog act by Conca...not often I get ashamed of Richmond players.

He's going to get a nice holiday .

dont be a pansie, the GWS bloke deserved what he got unfortunately Concs missed him a little bit and the prick went back on. Concs should  have completely flattened the mongrel.

Over reaction....not much in it, got his shoulder more than anything. Playing a great game is Conca.

U serious? Ive got a lot of time for conca, but this is the worst game Ive EVER seen him play, his disposal has been atrocious... and yes smith gave him a little cheapie uppercut when he had him in a headlock but that was a very dumb retaliation, you don't go clip some from behind

Regarding his disposal yesterday, he had one shocker as did Lids, Cotchin, etc...

Totally agree. very few highlights. very few positives. Thought Griffiths played okay. Have real doubts over whether Gordon is up to AFL standard and have major doubts about Grimes.  Thought Petterd was okay also.

I'm usually a huge rap for Dylan, but just fumbles of late at the most crucial of times, just not clean with hand or foot.

My call is to offload him to the west coke eagles.

We have made him another uncontested softy that's got poor disposal & he lacks any penetration when he does kick.
He might have been a beauty but it looks like we have ruined another one.

Heppell has turned out a much better player than Conca no doubt about it.

Im also of the view that its time to trade Conca back to West Australia and hopefully recoup our investment in Conca by getting a decent pick. I would also put Dylan Grimes up for trade as he isnt coming along as Id hope.

So Conca and Grimes on the trade table for mine.

I remember one of Reeces first games down at kardinia park, when in the last quarter we had a real chance of beating them and he had brain fades which turned the ball over.At the time we thought he would slowly remove that from his game but he hasnt

Yep you got that right, GWS put numbers behind the ball and scragged all day, boring as batshit football and they never tried to win just limit the damage

Oh by the way we won the game  ::)

Grimes had a bad game, Conca had a couple of brain fades and Lloyd was Mr Invisible again. The reality is though that GWS came to play and scragged, pressured and pushed the boundaries with aggression where-ever possible. Richmond played well considering. GWS has a very quick midfield and are a much better side than they are credited for. They just pushed Geelong to within 5 points the week earlier people forget.

Lids was excellent as was Petterd and Rance. Ellis and Vlaustin were fantastic too. The amount of times I saw them attack the contest and courageously win the ball in the air and on the ground. Martin gave away a few frees but was scragged all day.

I thought it was a good win particular with Miles and Jack kept quiet.
