The Tigers' form would have pleased Hardwick but he would have seen red when Reece Conca had one of the brain fades of the season.
After Devon Smith pulled his jumper over his head, Conca chased the young Giant to the interchange gate and threw a forearm to the back of his head.
Conca was reported as Smith gathered his thoughts on the bench.

That he is a weak as pee lunatic ranga that deserves multiple weeks suspension for being a complete moron would be my initial guess.
The act was disgusting and he should be suspended accordingly. Worse than Vickery's effort IMO.
But will prob get 2-3???

gutless act from an average footballer

Stupid play 2 weeks

I think we are getting a little hysterical about this. It was a nudge to the shoulder. It may have slipped upwards a little bit but I can't see in the video how it actually got him high or above the shoulders. Smith instantaneously grabbed his ear to try and milk a free, he didn't seem to actually connect with his ear.
About whether it was a dog act, I don't think so, Smith whacked him and ran away, turning around doesn't mean you aren't going to get one back.
Where Conca got it wrong was the timing, he needs to learn to take his whack and wait, it's funny how quickly the chance to get them back can present itself, even better if you can make it look legal like crunching your knee into their ribs in a marking contest.
-
2 weeks with an early plea reduced to 1 week ;D

Yep I didn't like how he retaliated, should have waited and bided his time

Couldn't agree more but given how Dimma stood by Ty last week and it seemed that at least from Dimma's point of view we as a club were unrepentant despite Ty apologising to Cox, you'll find that Reece will have at least a two week holiday enforced on him.
Gonna miss him next week against the Peptides. :banghead
-
The MRP will probably wimp it again and send the case straight to the Tribunal ::).
If you went on the points system ....
* Intentional contact (off the ball as well).
* High contact.
* Medium impact (if the Giants medical report is all clear then this could be reduced to 'low' impact)
That's 3-4 weeks; down to 2-3 with an early plea.
-
Dumb, ill=disciplined act from a dumb, ill-disciplined footballer, however his biggest crime is that he has now opened the door for Grigg to return.

:clapping well said. Got him high between the shoulder lower neck not the head. He also made contact with the GPS in the jumper...you clearly see the trainer adjust it when he was off the ground. Media will blow this up into something no doubt.
-
I don't care if it was a dog act.
Maybe I'm just a dog too.
But I'd rather see a dog act than nothing.
Not like the kid was properly hurt FFS. Untwist all your panties. It was a stuffing nudge.
-
whatever it was ..it was certainly reckless......At least Ty produced the full symphony with his hit
-
Not Guilty should have wacked the prick harder IMHO.
-
They should make an example of him.. Cowardly sniper act. Loses the brawl and then sneaks up behind for a cheap shot. Don't like where this club has gone the last two weeks with Vickery and now Conca. Both have done more damage to the clubs image than they have delivered onfield. Never rated either player. How did we end up with this dud over Heppell? Massive mistake.
Where was this aggression and attack on the ball and ball carrier. If you want your club respected and feared, look at Duncan's hit on Swallow last night in the contest. What we are delivering is just gutless.
-
2-3 weeks for not using his fist.
-
I for one will never complain when I see some mongrel on the footy field.
I think Conca is frustrated. He can see players from other clubs improving and becoming stars of the game, playing regular finals whilst he is becoming just another ordinary Richmond player that can't win contested possessions and continues to dinky kick or handballs to a contest whenever he gets the ball.
He doesn't know why this is happening too him but it must be frustrating for him especially when he was picked before Heppell and Prestia he knows that whilst they are being named as future stars of the comp, he will be just another ordinary Richmond battler with his easy possessions and dinky short kicks.
I hope he wakes up and becomes a star player too but he may have to move back west to reach his potential.
Poor bastard.

Our club needs to have players with balls. Both Tyrone and Conca did good IMHO. Its time other clubs players feared our club. Im sick and tired of having soft half hearted players. We need more mongrels. If you want soft go barrack for St Kilda.
-
he can make instant improvements himself .....1 don't do dinky kicks
2 think before you act eg dumb handballs to contests.
you don't need Ron Barrassi to teach you this

What they did was soft. It takes no balls to sneak up behind someone and king hit them. You want balls, you show it when you crunch the opposition with fierce tackles and bumps. North Melbourne players couldn't get up after being hit by the Geelong players last night. Fair hits and in the contest.
Sneak attacks are just a soft cowards game.

Tiger Thomas laments Conca 'brain fade'

Richmond midfielder Matt Thomas has defended the character of Reece Conca, but admits it's disappointing to see another of his teammates reported.
Conca had his number taken on Saturday for striking Devon Smith in the Tigers' fifth consecutive AFL win, a 27-point triumph over GWS at the MCG.
It was Richmond's second match-day report for striking in the space of eight days.
As Smith trotted towards the interchange bench in the second quarter, Conca raced after the GWS midfielder and caught him completely unawares with an elbow to the back of the head.
Tigers forward Ty Vickery was last week given a four-game ban when he was referred directly to the tribunal for knocking out West Coast ruckman Dean Cox.
Conca is likely to join Vickery on the sidelines for the club's crucial Friday night clash with Essendon.
"I know Reece is such a great guy with a great character .. hopefully everything works out for him," Thomas said.
"(It is disappointing he was reported), especially with a big game coming up.
"Reece is a really important player for our team and we don't like to see anyone get reported.
"There's playing on the edge and Reece does that very well. It's probably a bit of a brain fade."
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said he didn't see the incident, but that he'd look at speaking to Conca about his aggression.
"We like our guys to play tough, we don't like them to go above and beyond that. We've got to wheel them back if they do," Hardwick said.

Agression is aggression irrespective of how it happens. Our club produced the likes of Jack Dyer and Mopsy Fraser and Neil Balme and a host of others who knew what it meant to put fear into opposition players. Thats what we have to get back too not this pussy footing lets be nice and have a singalong at the footy rubbish. Lets start hitting blokes in the opposition, theyll start pooting emselves and we will be feared. Thats what footy is about. Not this gumbayah crap that everyone wants.

Yes, Vickery and Conca's acts were "dog acts". However, we need "AGRESSION". We need to be smarter how it happens.
Like in a marking contest, smash them.
Under a pack, jump into them harder.
Make them earn everything.
Tough. Ruthless. Tigers.

'Not my smartest move', says Conca of Smith hit
Nat Edwards

RICHMOND midfielder Reece Conca insists he's a fair player despite being reported for striking Giant Devon Smith from behind on Saturday.
Smith was leaving the ground after a scuffle with the Tiger, when Conca ran up behind him and struck the Giant in the back of the head with his elbow.
He was immediately reported and looks set to join teammate Tyrone Vickery on the sidelines, after the forward was suspended for four weeks for striking retiring West Coast veteran Dean Cox in round 18.
"Obviously it wasn't the smartest move," Conca admitted to Channel Nine on Sunday morning.
"But it's out of my control now, so I'll just let it be and see what happens.
"I'd like to think I'm a fair player but once you cross the line it gets a bit heated."
When asked if he would like to issue an apology to Smith, a reluctant Conca offered a less than heartfelt response.
"Sorry mate … there you go," he told the reporter.
Conca's teammate Troy Chaplin condemned the actions, telling Channel Nine's TAC Cup Future Stars the 21-year-old had a "brain fade".
"It is disappointing from Reece," Chaplin said.
"He is going to have to swallow his pride and cop whatever.
"We don't want to be seen as thugs and the last two weeks have been isolated incidents with Vickery and Reece.
"We want to play tough football but unfortunately it doesn't look good and we'll have to wait to see what happens."
Conca now faces a nervous wait ahead of the Match Review Panel's findings, which will be released on Monday.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick didn't see the incident during the match but said after the game he would be disappointed if Conca was suspended.
"We want our guys to play to the line, we don't want them to step over," Hardwick said.
"If he gets weeks, whatever it may be, we're really disappointed. We like our guys to play tough but we don't like them to go above and beyond."

eff this putting up with cheap elbows jumper punches etc. do it and suffer the freakin consequences.

I laughed when it idiots happen
What's Concs to do? Silly prick played with his jumper and ran away
Forza red wog

And a la Vickery, the maggot who could have managed the whole situation by paying the free kick that was there at the appropriate time didn't and everyone pays the price. stuffing flouro f-wits.

Should just have a rotating roster. Guys like Dea, Arnot, Gordon etc.
Take it in turns to king hit an opposition player and get suspended.
Give them a $10,000 reward per hit since they're cheap players anyway.
Just restock from the rookie/PS drafts when they get too many weeks to play footy at any level.
-
Anyone who has played the game would agree Ramps..... :clapping
What a load of bs. I played the game and hurt plenty of people fairly. When I tackled someone, they stay tackled. They thought twice about going for the ball the next time.
If you think that GWS kid is scared of Conca and his soft girly hit in the back of the head, you are kidding yourself. Conca was pansed and reacted out of embarrassment, not aggression. Comparing that dog act to Dyer who had no problem looking a player in the eye before cleaning them up is a disgrace.
Conca should get in the gym and work off that puppy fat. Has been at the club long enough to have a some muscle definition. Lazy player.

Where did I say the hits have to be illegal? Hitting opponents hard doesn't necessarily mean using a clenched fist to the face. Or does your mind not allow you to comprehend this?
-
MAYBE my view is shaded by the fact that I grew up in Richmond in the 1970s when Richmond was a poo hole and coppers were coppers and theyd give you a clip over the ear or a kick up the arse if they saw you stuffing around. Those coppers hit harder than what Tyrone did last week or what Conca did this weekend. Concas only mistake was that he didnt clean up the prick and send him into the middle of next week.

Nothing wrong with your view Ramps. I don't share it and I think that time has passed but that is fine.
"Anyone who has played the game would agree Ramps". This kind of fanboy stuff is small minded by Yellowandblackblood.
Conca getting suspended for that effort really doesn't serve the club in the way you describe. Turner's hit on O'donnell. That is what the club needs.
We have too many players who don't know how to land a legit tackle or bump that would hurt an opposition player. Most of them are too scared even to go in when its their turn. If the club wants to be feared, they need to be more aggressive but in a way that matters.
-

Have to agree with this, the useless turds let all the scragging and niggling go on all the game without taking action.
They paid a few square ups in the last quarter to us but as a whole they were bull stuffing poo

You are the small minded one! You never responded to my post. I never said we should king hit anybody! If you have played the game you will know that intimidation goes a long way to helping you win the mind games. If you can hit your opponents hard with tackles, hard blocks, make them earn their marks and not take a backward step you will start to intimidate your opponent. It's not being a "fanboy". It's the truth. Please respond directly to my posts instead of taking cheap shots via other posts, unless you are a coward of course!

Bull poo all that, hit them anyway you can, fairly or unfairly, make them poo their pants

Reece Conca, Richmond, has been charged with a level four striking offence (325 demerit points, three-match sanction) for striking Devon Smith, GWS Giants, during the second quarter of the Round 19 match between Richmond and the GWS Giants, played at the MCG on Saturday August 2, 2014.
In summary, he can accept a two-match sanction with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of seven activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Four Offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction.

agree. No more taking rubbish from the other clubs. The umps aren't giving us frees and looking after us so we will do it ourselves. Only disappointing this is it didn't happen years ago.

What you have no mail on this?
A caller on SEN earlier this evening (after 5pm) suggest Conca was kicked prior to his brain fade

Sorry, I should have prefaced this by saying there's a it of mail going around that was the catalyst :shh

just like the olden days, dont run son cause their is nowhere to hide if you wanna play footy ;D He got what he deserved when he pulled the jumper & ran away like a girl. Well done Reece. :thumbsup

AGREE CONCAS GETTING RUBBED OUT FOR DOING HALF A JOB. FFS IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THE CRIME MAKE IT COUNT.
Like ramps i come from a tough neighborhood where getting caught on the beighboring patch could mean a good old belting.
you know this is what i hate about the game. when i played if i threw an elbow punch even verbal i knew there was a good chance i was going to get it back only the bloke was going to try and put me into next week.
the cheap shots really pee me off and usually the bloke who says ah stuff this is the one hung drawn and quartered by all the softies and softie mentality.
i cant stand ty vickery i think hes soft as butter but you know what cox got his just deserts. if you dont want to get hit dont throw one even a soft one to start the ball rolling.

well I suppose at least we can say the MRP had the guts to grade it themselves this week. Rather throwing their collective hands in the air and say "it's all too hard" :-\
Think you have to let this go. They made it clear once it reaches a certain threshold they have to, by the guidelines, pass it to the tribunal. Makes sense to me really..

Really? Every "expert" who reports on the tribunal said they could have assessed the Vickery case. Then a deal gets done re the penalty he receives and it becomes more farcical. The MRP chose not to assess, ditto with the Lake case... Joel and his cohorts took the easy way out with both cases ... like a dinky little kick side ways

it was soft as a freshly laid sh!ite. That sooky acting was beyond the pale looking like a wounded fawn. You have to be a halfwit to start poo with someone then turn your back on them anyway... Might end up like Cox making gorrilla biscuits in the turf.

Richmond midfielder Reece Conca should be charged with assault for ‘cowardly act’, says lawyer David Galbally
Tom Minear
Herald Sun

RICHMOND midfielder Reece Conca should be charged with assault after he hit an opponent in the head from behind, a prominent lawyer says.
Conca received a two-match ban for elbowing Greater Western Sydney’s Devon Smith during Richmond’s weekend win.
But David Galbally QC said the hit was “a cowardly act and it’s clearly an assault”.
“I would say call in the police,” Mr Galbally told 3AW this morning.
“He clearly needs anger management. ‘Brain fade’ - what an extraordinary excuse.”
“If I did it or you did it going it into the ground, you’d be immediately arrested and you’d be charged.”
After tussling with Smith near the boundary, Conca followed him to the bench and swung his elbow at Smith’s head from behind.
He was charged with a level four striking offence - seen as intentional, medium impact and high contact - and was suspended for two weeks.
Conca said on Sunday that “obviously it wasn’t the smartest move”.
“I’d like to think I’m a fair player but, you know, once you get across the line, it gets a bit heated,” he said.
Mr Galbally said the AFL had “failed to recognise the seriousness of it” and had dealt with it too leniently, sending a bad message to children.
“It’s the type of behaviour we ... are trying to stamp out,” he said.
Richmond defender Troy Chaplin defended Conca on Sunday, saying it was a “brain fade” and that the Tigers didn’t want to be known as “thugs”.
“It is disappointing from Reece,” Chaplin told Channel Nine.
“We want to play tough football, but unfortunately it doesn’t look good.”

Conca deserved longer holiday: Seymour

Former Sydney Swan Brad Seymour has branded the two-week ban handed to Richmond's Reece Conca for his cheap shot on Devon Smith as disgraceful.
Seymour told SportsFan that the AFL should look at changing the guidelines to allow for higher penalties for similar blatant hits in future.
Conca accepted a two-game ban for a level four striking charge after gaining a reduction for an early guilty plea.
"There should be another rule that allows for the tribunal to whack them hard for a blatant hit like that," Seymour said.
"If you rate that against other incidents we have seen… if you look at Nat Fyfe who was involved in a collision and it was accidental and he got two weeks, this (Conca) was a blatant hit to the head.
"That is not tough. Anyone can hit anyone in the back of the head if they are not watching."

If I see that idiot Seymour around town I will give him the hammer strike to the head
-
Firstly what is a Brad Seymour?
Secondly, I'm a bit late to the party here so forgive me if I'm repeating multiple posts. I thought what Tyronne did was really ordinary but seeing what Conca did I honestly thought he just miscued an elbow in the back. An elbow to the back which we see countlessly at the beginning of games when Full Forwards meet their Full Back opponents and there is some argy bargy in ruck contests. Elbow to sternums and elbows to backs. Examples, Marc Murphy on Crawley and Cox on Vickery. Both perfect examples.
Conca was pumped up he had some mosquito pull his jumper over his head give him a couple in the ribs and run off. Conca ran after him and wanted to give him a strong elbow to the back, he went too high and thus his contact to his upper back flowed into his neck. Poor but more so in execution than force. Smith is soft and 20 years old. If he got in properly he'd been in hospital.
He got him high and ofcourse had to be suspended. 2 weeks I thought was more than fair. The hysteria about being charged and so forth is just ridiculous.
-
They should make an example of him..
Our club needs to have players with balls. Both Tyrone and Conca did good IMHO. Its time other clubs players feared our club. Im sick and tired of having soft half hearted players. We need more mongrels. If you want soft go barrack for St Kilda.
Well said.
Would rather be unsociable premiers like Hawthorn than everyones 2nd favourite team in bruise free Melbourne.

Me too. Then tea bag him.

Where's this silly silly Seymour these days, first I've heard of the bum since he was a battling defender at the swannies
-
Listen to these stuffing whiney bunnies? For a start he was just gonna give him a nudge in the back of the shoulder but ended up stuffing it up and clubbing him one. Anybody would think he took a stuffing axe to the back of his bonce or something. Do these pricks even live on the same planet as me? Have they even been hit, do they play soccer or something? Oh wait, Galbally QC... that pricks hardest choice in life would be whether to eat the food placed in front of him or throw himself out of a stuffing window ... Wtf would he know about being hit ?
-
Totally disagree with the comments of Galbally. Conca's behaviour was not criminal. To suggest he should be charged with unlawful assault is totally inappropriate.

Press charges. lol
Calling that a king hit.
You'd think the kid was dead.
Even his acting was weak, let alone the elbow...

Hardwick backs Conca to learn from 'selfish' act
Jennifer Phelan

DAMIEN Hardwick believes Richmond midfielder Reece Conca will learn from the "selfish" act that felled Greater Western Sydney's Devon Smith and cost the young Tiger two games.
Conca, 21, was suspended by the Match Review Panel for his uncharacteristic and undisciplined elbow to the back of Smith's head in the second quarter of Saturday's win over the Giants.
The two had engaged in a wrestle where Smith pulled Conca's jumper over his head.
Conca responded by chasing the unsuspecting Giant to the interchange gate and collecting him with his elbow.
"We had a chat to Reece. Obviously we're disappointed - we like our players to play hard and tough but that was above and beyond," Hardwick said on Thursday.
"He was really disappointed with his actions, as were we. We've got a good player sitting in the stands for two weeks.
"Reece is a quality kid, he stepped outside the bounds, he knows that, we know that and we're really disappointed he decided to do that.
"It was really selfish on his behalf.
"He'll get better and learn from it, and more importantly, we're probably lucky Devon Smith didn't cop a nasty injury from it."
It's the second undisciplined act that has cost the Tigers in recent weeks, with Tyrone Vickery currently serving a four-week ban for striking Dean Cox in round 18.
Conca will miss the Tigers' clash with Essendon on Friday night and their away game against Adelaide in round 21 while Vickery is due back for the final home-and-away round.

Danny green was just on 3 aw talking about how the afl had a chance to make a stance for one punch violence by using Reece Conca as an example.
-
I don't get it. Do they want to bring back the biff? Outrage when it happens? Follow it up with more threats of biffo?

He's the same tool who they drag out on a current affair as their so called legal expert! Media whore pure and simple :chuck
-
If Galbally thinks that that was criminal behaviour then most AFL players would be in jail. Off the ball stuff happens all the time. The guy has no idea what happens on the footy field. And how about the elbow or fist that is aimed at someones head pretending that it was meant for the ball? That is just as cheap and often the player is hurt a lot more than Devon Smith was. Somehow that is thought to be part of the "toughness" in a game though! Why doesn't he say those things are criminal too?

Conca's 'appalling act' lucky to escape harsher penalty, says chief
Melissa Woods, AAP

CHIEF executive Gillon McLachlan admits the AFL erred in its handling of Reece Conca's "appalling" hit on Devon Smith last weekend.
Richmond's Conca received a two-match ban for his elbow to the back of the head of the GWS midfielder.
Boxer and one-punch campaigner Danny Green lashed the League for its handling of the incident, saying it sent a poor message to the community.
"The AFL had a real chance to make a real stand against this kind of violence, which the whole of society is trying to abolish," Green told 3AW on Friday.
"The AFL should have taken a stand and said, 'You know what, son, we know you are sorry and you didn't mean it and wouldn't normally do it but we have to make a stand and stamp this type of behaviour out'."
McLachlan said the incident should have been referred directly to the Tribunal, which would have allowed more scope for punishment.
"I thought it was an appalling act and I feel the match review panel (MRP) is constrained by it," McLachlan told 3AW later on Friday.
"I think probably the right outcome here was to put this straight to the tribunal because if you look at the rules, the application in this case was right of the MRP.
"But when you've got a guy, out of anger, running after a guy and hitting him from behind ... I just think it's a terrible, terrible act and I understand Danny Green's comments."
McLachlan said nothing could be done about it now, with no place for the AFL Commission to step in.
He said he had spoken to the MRP and AFL football operations boss Mark Evans, who is reviewing the citing process.
"I think we need to learn from it and understand what could have been done better if we feel that an outcome isn't right."

Hardwick wants explanation over AFL CEO's Conca comments
Nat Edwards, with AAP

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says he's "disappointed" with AFL boss Gillon McLachlan's comments on Tigers' midfielder Reece Conca, and wants an explanation.
On Friday morning, McLachlan admitted the AFL had erred in its handling of Reece Conca's "appalling" hit on Devon Smith last weekend, and should have referred the incident directly to the Tribunal.
Richmond's Conca received a two-match ban for his elbow to the back of the head of the GWS midfielder.
Hardwick said McLachlan's comments were unnecessary.
"I was a little bit disappointed with that," Hardwick said after the Tigers' 18-point win over Essendon at the MCG.
"Reece knows and he’s disappointed with his actions as are we. I don’t think we need to have the CEO come out and speak about it. It's done and dusted, let's leave it in the past.
"The Match Review Panel dealt with it so let's move on. I'll be sending him a please explain.”
Hardwick said Conca was "embarrassed" and would take to heart the comments made McLachlan.

I'd like to see you even attempt to justify that post :lol
Knocked himself out a couple of weeks earlier going headlong at the ball - he isn't a coward, he had a rush of blood and made a clumsy attempt at a square up.
Conca biggest embarrassment are his fat guts!
