The season's not finished for Tigers: Hardwick

DAMIEN Hardwick says Richmond's last two months have started to atone for a disappointing start to the season but has emphasised the importance of the Tigers finishing the year strongly.
While the Tigers' five straight wins leaves them a mathematical chance to play finals, they're not focusing on that possibility ... just yet.
After accepting they didn't cope with injuries to key players early in the season, Hardwick said they now had to ensure they maintained their recent form.
"We've got to beat some good sides coming home and the season's not finished for us. We've just got to make sure we win as many games as we can and more importantly play a brand of footy our fans, supporters and members are proud of," Hardwick said on Thursday.
"Our players have to lead from the front in that area and they've started to make some real in-roads with that but we've got to make sure we continue to deliver on the big stage."
Focusing on Friday night's clash with Essendon took priority over their resuscitated finals hope this week, with Hardwick conceding a lot had to go right for them to make up the two games that currently keeps them out of the eight.
He said they would go into the game confident of putting in a better effort than they did when they lost to the Bombers by 50 points earlier in the season.
"We're probably in a lot better form than we were earlier in the year in regards to this game and they're a really good side," he said.
"They handled themselves pretty well against Sydney, which is a tough ask at the best of times let alone up at the SCG.
"It's going to be a really tough game, they're very good clearance wise, getting the ball outside to their numbers, and if they get the game on their terms they're capable of hurting us.
"We've just got to make sure defensively we're attune and get the game based in a manor we'd like."
Hardwick said the Bombers had enough depth to cover the loss of forward Patrick Ambrose and Jake Carlisle if he didn't come up from a sore leg.
Defender Steven Morris is a chance to return from a hand injury while midfielder Dan Jackson is likely to miss another week.

hahahaha touche. But I'm just sayin' if the world went topsy turvy and we won a premiership this year I will forgive the messing with Jack Riewoldt, playing Arnot out of position, taking his sweet time elevating Miles, persevering with the hammer, saying our A graders needed to lift, not playing the kids, etc
Everything I just mentioned won't be forgiven if we just fluked it into the finals

It's comments like that which would make Bomber smirk.
I hope I'm wrong but this week is starting to feel like a familiar build up......

it's like, you know the prime minister is a stuffwit AND you know there's nothing you can do about it except medicate, try and sit back and tune out

Some people would call that a great night out...each to their own I guess. :-\
More importantly, how bad is the PR rubbish coming out of the club of late? Geez Geez

That's right.
More importantly, how bad is the PR rubbish coming out of the club of late? Geez Geez
as bad as the graphics they use in advertising

Even KB and Wallace today both said that the past 5 weeks have been par for the course and that the next 2 weeks only will tell us if we're "back on track" as the club keeps spruiking. Im glad the media are finally starting to cotton on and take note of the RUBBISH that's coming out of Punt Road these days. Just hope they go heard at the club if we fail to show up tomorrow night in a game that finally means something

Damian Hardwick warns against opposition clubs writing Richmond off after win streak
Bruce Matthews
Herald-Sun
August 07, 2014 3:41PM
RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick defended his team against a notion that the string of recent wins was largely based on inferior opposition.
“I think our numbers suggest otherwise. Wins are a byproduct of the process and our process is fine at the moment. A lot of our KPI (key performance indicators) that a lot of clubs go by are right up there. All you can do is measure those,’’ he said.
On what has contributed to the form turnaround, Hardwick said: “It’s probably simple to say it’s one thing. There’s a number of things that come into play. It’s what the guys have spoken about, the five per cent we were looking for in the training standard has increased, not so much from an on field but more around the club perspective.
“The addition of Ivan Maric makes a huge difference. We haven’t had Dan Jackson for the majority of the year also. Brett Deledio comes back in, Alex Rance. Probably what we didn’t do was cover injury well, we were disappointing in that area and didn’t play anywhere near our best footy earlier. So, there’s a number of things we can look at our success over the last five to six weeks and measure it by.’’
The Tigers coach denied an alteration to the game plan in the second half of the season. “It’s amazing when you get good players, you become a good coach,’’ he said.
“You look at Port Adelaide, they haven’t played their best footy over the last couple of weeks. It’s no coincidence that (Alipate) Carlisle and (Jackson) Trengove go out. Hawthorn is probably a side that has bucked the trend, they’ve covered their injuries incredibly well. But sides go in and out with players and it’s a matter of trying to hold the fort and get some wins when you can.’’
Hardwick is hoping his Tigers can maintain the current form that’s infinitely better than when Essendon thrashed them by 50 points at the MCG in round 11.
“They’re a really good side, they handled themselves pretty well against Sydney which is a tough ask at the best of times, especially at the SCG. So it’s going to be a really tough game,’’ he said.
“They’re very good clearance-wise, getting that ball outside to their numbers and if you get the game on their terms, they’re capable of hurting us. So, we’ve got to make sure defensively we’re attuned and get the game based in a manner that we would like.
“Obviously, (Jake) Carlisle might be under some doubt, (Patrick) Ambrose is obviously out. But the thing about Essendon is that they have a lot of depth in that area. Young (Michael) Hurley can swing back and forward, they have a young kid Tayte Pears in the seconds who could quite easily come in.’’
While Hardwick is rapt for injury-restricted Nathan Foley to finally reach his 150th AFL game, he’s quick to temper any extra motivation for the team from that personal milestone.
“I couldn’t think of a more deserving individual. He has been through a lot. He came from a rookie list, the backblocks of Colac, we like to say. He has had significant injury system and for him to reach 150 is great, but I’ve got no doubt his best footy is still in front of him,’’ he said.
“I’m not sure it means too much. We’ve got (Matt) Thomas playing his 100th and they’re both very important players for us who bring a lot. But once that ball’s bounced, the players just focus on their job and the role they play.’’

In 2003 & 2004 we won 1 game out of 28 post round 8.
