Richmond to bill clash with Adelaide Crows as mini elimination final says Bachar Houli
Sam Landsberger
Herald-Sun
August 10, 2014
BACHAR Houli says Richmond’s greatest winning streak in 19 years was built on a lift in training standards and the Tigers will bill Saturday night’s clash against Adelaide as an elimination final.
The Tigers’ 18-point win against Essendon on Friday night was its sixth on the trot — their best run since starting the 1995 season 7-0.
Richmond is now within four points of the seventh-placed Bombers and if it can square the ledger at 10-10 against the Crows a September finish will almost certainly boil down to its Round 23 trip to face Sydney.
“I can believe (we’ve won six in a row) because training has been to a really high standard that we as a team have set, particularly the last 6-8 weeks,” Houli said.
“A lot of it is just attitude. For us we’re now focusing on Adelaide. We’ve got a 24-hour period where we can relax but once that’s over we’ll focus on Adelaide.”
The Tigers have saluted in three of their past four games against the Crows and Houli said his side was winning back the respect of the footy world.
“The (Crows game) will bring a finals atmosphere and I thought (Friday night) was a finals atmosphere as well,” he said.
“We were fighting to keep our season alive and also Essendon are as well, even though they’re in the eight they’re trying to get that extra game for security.
“For us next week is another elimination final and hopefully we can get the job done.”
Spearhead Jack Riewoldt yesterday said the Tigers were still a “sneaky sniff” to play in September.
“We trained our arses off over pre-season. But we let a few things slip, we let a few things individually slip but we’ve been able to rectify that over the last 2-3 months,” he said on Triple M.
“Trust me, I’m as frustrated as anyone. There were games we should have won at the start of the season that we let slip.”
Coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers’ form had eclipsed the best they produced last year on the back of heightened consistency but lamented their inability to handle injuries to stars Brett Deledio, Alex Rance and Ivan Maric early in the season as thy slumped to 3-10.
“We knew what was going wrong, it just took a bit of a lag to fix it, which was a little bit disappointing,” he said.
“There always was going to be a bump in the road at some stage and it defines your organisation how you handle that bump.
“Hopefully ours was in the first part of this year and then we move forward.”

Doesn't this article belong in your poo thread?

Crap does this mean a pressure game
It's when expectations are highest that they do their best to let us down
-
“We knew what was going wrong, ....."
Um, pretty sure by your own admission you didn't Damien. That's one of the reasons a lot of us lost confidence in your ability to take us to the next level.

Who cares anymore. We beat essendon.

Anyone, anytime.

Been considering it since yesterday. Road trip leave Friday stay Sat night come back Sunday.
26 degrees also. Hopefully they suffer in the heat and the Lions start rattling the goals on and they have their energy sapped. Another one or two blokes to miss won't go astray either.
By the way go Eagles at 4:40. Good old fashioned hate the Pies session coming up then too. :thumbsup

-
yeah il be there got my seat last week. Was supposed to be just a work trip with a footy match in between. Now its made the trip a bit more interesting.
-
Thx to lions limp effort , we re going to need 100 point win to overtake them ::)
-
the lions were an absolute disgrace today, just pulled their own pants down and decided to cop it. stuffing idiots.
-
Biggest loss at the Gabba ever for the Brissy Lions.
If we are destined to make it this win by Adelaide today won't matter.
Crows play Nort the week after they play us so all we can do is keep winning and hope teams who I loathe, disrespect and find repulsive and repugnant keep doing us favours by winning or losing depending on the game.
All gets down to us. Just keep winning and the rest will work itself out.

WTF is Leppistch doing, bloody spud

im off to this one. just want to experience adelaide oval.
think the crowsa will finally put paid to what has been a very ordinary season for lots of reasons.
im still lol at the hopes of our supporters. imean ffs stk, bl, gws wce, p/a who have won 2 of their last what 7 and an under siege essendon.
i will reiterate again i hate these wins they will mean we once again get the poly filla out and plaster over the gaping cracks, and why???? so we can sell some sort of mistaken hope to the deluded masses.
while i complain about posters demanding kids get games or more to the point demand kids deserve games, which they dont, im still firmly in their camp where i believe we need to find out about players and stop trying to win meaningless games we wont make finals and even if we did its a fools ambition. weare in a place where long term vision must take precedent over the no. we have failed to do this and i for one wont be forgiving the rabble in a hurry.

The amount of non richmond supporters I know bringing up footy and saying, jees hows those tiges..
Slydogs just waiting for us to fail so they can lay in like a sledge hammer.
Imv even winning every game I still think we will miss and I still rue that loss to bulldogs, losing that even then I knew it would come back to bite us if we ever found form.
Once again fools gold... and jees I feel stupid once again for believing it was different
I look forward to whatthe club does in the off season to bolster our coaching panel and development team and more importantly what we do with the players.

We're the masters of late season runs, I just hope this time it was a lesson on how to win. We had something to play for, had massive expectations and against a quality opponent (compared to most of games leading into it) with just as much on the line. They came at us time and time again and probably should have won but we found a way to win ourselves like good teams do. In the past I reckon we would have given up. Not getting my hopes up yet because I've been let down too many times but I'm hoping something has clicked. Form and winning isn't a switch.
If a step was taken we'll know against Adelaide then we have to belt St Kilda. Not because we should on paper but because we have to. Then a genuine show against Sydney will tell all.

If you're in Adelaide or heading across for the game, an open training session will be held Friday, August 15 from 5pm at Adelaide Oval. Fans can watch training from level 1 of the Riverbank Stand, which can be accessed from the South Gate in Southern Plaza (city end).
Any OERites heading over for the game?

Richmond handed battle plan to defeat Adelaide in crunch game that could decide finals spot
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
August 12, 2014 9:34PM
RICHMOND has been handed the battle plan to take down Adelaide and continue its September charge by the bizarre complaints of Crows coach Brenton Sanderson.
The Tigers will take on Adelaide with the advantage of a two-day break and a compulsive set of statistics that show it can use Adelaide’s fatigue to their advantage.
Sanderson complained about the 24 degree heat in Brisbane ahead of a six-day break, saying the game put his players at risk.
It was a mystifying decision to raise the heat and create an out clause for his players, with Champion Data statistics giving Richmond real hope of overrunning the Crows late at Adelaide Oval.
Their stats show that sides playing a rival off a six-day break with an extra day’s recovery win 52.4 per cent of the time.
But since 2000 teams with an eight-day break playing a rival off six days win 56.2 per cent, a huge increase in a game of one-percenters.
The Tigers have also become last-quarter specialists as they ride their six-game winning streak.
Across the season they are ranked sixth in last quarters (+57 points) compared to 14th ranked Adelaide and fourth in time on in the last terms (+57) compared to the ninth-ranked Crows.
The Tigers were yesterday playing down the perceived advantage as they make their Adelaide Oval debut after winning four of the past five games at AAMI Stadium.
Richmond utility Ricky Petterd said yesterday Sanderson’s comments had not yet been mentioned.
He said every game was an elimination final as the Tigers seek to win seven straight games for the first time since Rounds 1-7 of 1995.
“It would be huge (to play finals). I don’t think anyone has done it from where we’ve been and it would be massive,” he said.
“We want to play but we can’t think anything further than this weekend against Adelaide because they’re in some pretty good form.
“It’s a bit of a cliche but it is one week at a time for us and every game is like an elimination final, and there’s nothing bigger that this Saturday night against Adelaide.”
Richmond’s unlikely run still needs several dominoes to fall with the Tigers potentially already out of the race by the time they take on Sydney in Round 23.
But despite Adelaide’s dominant win over Brisbane they will go in understrength, with Patrick Dangerfield (knee) in doubt and Andy Otten (knee) out for the year.
It comes as the Tigers attempt to secure their emerging key position talent in Ben Griffiths despite rival interest.
Griffiths’ long kicking and strong marking have come to the fore, especially since the suspension of Tyrone Vickery.
Griffiths’ career was hanging by a thread last year when offered a one-year deal with even clubs like St Kilda seen as likely to overlook him if delisted.
Now as clubs like the Bulldogs hover around all available key position players the Tigers are talking to the 22-year-old’s management.
He would require a multi-year deal to stay given the interest in the former Eastern Ranges pick 19.
Brandon Ellis’ phenomenal second season continues, with the Tigers having secured him last year until the end of 2015.

I'd have no issue with 3 years for Griffiths.

Preview: Adelaide v Richmond
Harry Thring
afl.com.au
August 12, 2014 8:45 PM
HAVING surged back into the top eight with a percentage-boosting win over the Brisbane Lions last weekend, Adelaide needs to cement its place by ending Richmond's winning streak. The Tigers' six straight victories have revived their season and, remarkably, a seventh on Saturday night could see them press into the eight as well. Breathing space is a luxury neither side has and thus a loss is a failure neither can afford. The Crows have struggled tirelessly for consistency in 2014 but desperately need to replicate last Sunday's effort at home. Richmond is full of confidence though and loom as a worthy adversary.
WHERE AND WHEN: Adelaide Oval, Saturday August 16, 7.10pm ACST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R12, 2013, Richmond 16.14 (110) d Adelaide 10.12 (72) at the MCG
R14, 2012, Adelaide 17.4 (106) d Richmond 13.9 (87) at AAMI Stadium
R23, 2011, Richmond 17.19 (121) d Adelaide 15.9 (99) at AAMI Stadium
R18, 2010, Richmond 15.10 (100) d Adelaide 11.14 (80) at the MCG
R7, 2010, Adelaide 15.14 (104) d Richmond 7.12 (54) at AAMI Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Since round 15 only two sides remain undefeated: Richmond and Geelong. The Tigers haven’t won seven in a row since the opening seven weeks of the 1995 season.
2. Richmond travels to Adelaide Oval for the first time but in its favour is its recent history in Adelaide; the Tigers have won four of their last five in South Australia.
3. Adelaide is the number one ranked centre clearance side in 2014 averaging 14.2 a game, while Richmond is 13th with 11.5 a game.
4. Despite last year's 38-point loss, Adelaide still holds a clear head-to-head advantage over Richmond, winning 20 games to 11.
5. The Crows are the second best team in 2014 for contested marks, averaging 11.2 a game. The Tigers have struggled, ranked 13th with an average of 9.2 a game.
6. Crows ruckman Sam Jacobs is on fire. He's averaged the fourth-most Official AFL Player Ratings points of any player over the past month.
Prediction: Adelaide by 19 points

They'll have had time to realise they can make finals, so that should be enough to make them shot their pants.

Crows wary of in-form Tigers in AFL
Steve Larkin, AAP
August 16, 2014
Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson says we'll find out if his Crows are the real deal in Saturday night's season-shaping showdown against Richmond.
Sanderson views the encounter as "a cracking game" between AFL clubs scratching for lower reaches of the top eight.
The seventh-placed Crows host the storming Tigers, who have won six in a row to rise to 12th - just one tantalising victory from eighth spot.
Sanderson has challenged his players to embrace the hype of the finals-shaping fixture at a sold-out Adelaide Oval.
"They're ready," he said after Adelaide's match-eve training session.
"The attitude around the group all season, even when we started 0-3, has just been spot-on.
"We just haven't been able to execute consistently well.
"That will be one of our key focuses tomorrow night: can we handle the big occasion, are we able to execute when it really matters?"
Richmond, who have won four of their past five games against Adelaide, named Ben Lennon for midfielder Matt Thomas (knee) - and the Tigers have Sanderson wary.
"They're red-hot," he said.
"Their contested ball numbers are really good, plus 20 contested ball so they're really good around the contest. They're a side full of talent."

We really don't have anything to lose tonight as we're still underdogs with all the 'experts' in the media. Win and our faint finals dream stays alive; lose and we'll end up with pick 7 in the draft knowing we weren't good enough.
Confident in this. Only lost one elimination final in over 3 decades.
That was our only ever elimination final loss in fact :shh.

God is there anywhere in the country it isn't raining, makes for crap football. Its been raining in Brissy all day.
Yep. God's own country. Not a cloud to be seen and 30 magnificent degrees of warm yet not humid greatness. As it has been every day for 3 months and will be for another month or so yet.
Suffer!!!!!! :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing :fishing

Get stuffed umpire. Paying that holding the ball on a wet night like this :banghead.
And now 50 for Grimes retaliating to a cheap shot ::)

Get in front Jack.

Don't chip in the wet, Dusty :banghead.

-
There were two of you there to stop Pods.
-
Why is that not holding the ball umpire? ::)
-
Why is that not holding the ball umpire? ::)
Got me stuffed. Text book call I thought
-
We had about 3 chances to kill that footy on the boundary and we allowed the ball to stay in.
It wasn't out on the full against Houli either. Thankfully only a point to the Crows.
-
Umps pllaying to the crowd. We're getting reemed.
-
:banghead
There's been some dumb stuff by us this qtr. Get your bodies behind the footy FFS!
-
That's better Jack. Lead up. Finds Miles 40m out.
And it's been reversed ::). Stay out of the game Umpires! :banghead
-
These umps are fvked
-
Seriously umps pee off.
-
What was Cotch meant to do? ::) ::)
Petterd flying shot just scrapes in for a point.
And they break out to a open forward half for a Betts goal out the back :banghead
32 - 28
-
Not the umps fault, just following instructions.
-
We losing the contested footy stats by 23.
Dusty long bouncing bomb from 60 for a goal :gotigers
Needed that big time.
Rich 38
Adel 29
-
Frees 12 to 4 in favour of Adelaide
-
Think we need to get back to wet weather footy, just get it forward instead of trying one handed pick ups, go the percentages tiges.
-
Flossy pulled out because he didn't want to slide at the ball. The rule is wrong when it's wet conditions and the ball is on the ground.
-
Grigg under pressure pokes a kick for a point.
39 - 31
-
Hooray we actually got a holding free.
Lids misses badly though.
40 - 31
-
Umpiring is disgusting
-
Have a sook Adelaide. It was over the shoulder anyway.
Jack from 30m. Misses. We've got to take our chances.
41 - 31
-
Umpiring is disgusting
Blinkers on I reckon, they've been ok.

-
Umpiring is disgusting
Blinkers on I reckon, they've been ok.
Incorrect
-
Premiership Quarter Tiges....... Now or never!
-
We're getting beaten badly in the contested ball and clearances so that has to be turned around given that's meant to be our strength and the reason for our last 6 wins. Fortunately, we've still been able to egg out goals.
ps. On the live ladder we're currently 9th :P ;D.
-
Premiership Quarter Tiges....... Now or never!
If there's any time to break out of our post-half-time sleepy-time habit, it is now.
-
Although we are in front, I just get the feeling that we are hanging on. We will need to get more contested ball in the 2nd half.
-
Umpiring is disgusting
Blinkers on I reckon, they've been ok.
Houlis out on the full
Lids throw
Miles holding the ball
Nope
-
Houli threw his head back when the ball went out, so if the bloke whose foot it comes off thinks it's out then I reckon it's fair if the umpire calls it as well.
Crows could fire back with Maric's unreasonable marking attempt in the goal square and Rance holding Walker at near the boundary line.
And both teams could find 10 more they got or were missed.
Nothing more than swings and roundabouts. It's footy.
-
Houli threw his head back when the ball went out, so if the bloke whose foot it comes off thinks it's out then I reckon it's fair if the umpire calls it as well.
Rubbish
-
Every point is crucial to us here.
If Collingwood lose massive chance finals will come down to %.
-
Point to us (rushed)
Ellis' long running shot misses too.
And goes another and misses.
50 - 34
-
Houli threw his head back when the ball went out, so if the bloke whose foot it comes off thinks it's out then I reckon it's fair if the umpire calls it as well.
Rubbish
Not often you see a cricket umpire chase a bloke who has walked off the ground to tell him he isn't out.
There is also the small fact that a boundary umpire makes that decision and we are really talking centrals when discussing standards.
-
Lids :gotigers
Rich 56
Adel 35

Did the Crows send Mackay back on the field with a crook cheekbone?
Btw Pie stars are going down like nine pins at the 'G - Reid, Pendlebury and Beams all injured.

You may be but I am discussing all umpires and they are stuffed and playing to the home crowd
-
Looking at the ladder predictor if we lose to Sydney, it will come down to % between us, Adelaide and West Coast.
If we could crack this open it would be huge.
-
Big Benny should have done better there.
-
Morris' best pass ever.
Lids poster. Need to kick these.
57 - 35
And then we give away 50.
-
Titch off the ground gets it forward but it rolls through for a point. 1.5 this qtr to us.
58 - 35
-
Benny you should have held that. That's the second he didn't realise he had more time.
-
Benny point. That's 1.6 this qtr.
59 - 35
-
Tigers have to play crows, crowd and umps :shh stuff the afl!!

60m set shot for Benny is another point.

Probably won't hear anymore complaints of umpire bias. :lol

Probably won't hear anymore complaints of umpire bias. :lol
Touche! Well played TBR :lol
-
If we lose this game we lost it this quarter, shoud be 10 goals up.
Yep.
Doing dumb kick-ins like that gifting Adelaide a goal will cost us as well :banghead.
-
what a cock up!
-
Did Newman kick that in?
-
Retire Newman please :banghead
-
Titch's bicycle kick doesn't come off. Point. 1.9 this qtr.
-
Gordon's soccer kick is another point.
62 - 43
-
ffs!
-
What's the point in tackling if they can just drop or throw it out?
-
3/4 time
Richmond 5.1 7.5 8.14-62
Adelaide 2.3 4.10 5.13-43
Goals: Deledio 2, Griffiths, Cotchin, Gordon, Foley, Martin, S.Edwards.
1.9 that qtr ::)
-
must get first goal of the qtr, keep up that intensity and pressure
-
Frees 19 to 11
-
Keep it going Tiges, one for the apologists
-
Stuff up a chance at our end and they run it down the other end for a goal :banghead.
Be proactive Tiges.

:banghead
-
Going to find out plenty about the real value of the leadership and resolve we've been hearing about in the next 16 minutes.

Dimma needs to get whacked over the use of a sub.
Who leaves it till 7 mins to go to bring on a 18 yo 3rd gamer in what's a Elim Final. .. bloody awful for the kid. Should have brought him on at 3 qtr time.
-
To drop behind at the last second like that and then say 'stuff that poo' and win anyway is stuffin swweeeeet, we seeing a much tougher mindset from our team. HAH some of the Adelaide fans were stickin round to say hi to Maric lol
-
Final Score
Richmond 5.1 7.5 8.14 10.19-79
Adelaide 2.3 4.10 5.13 9.15-69
Goals: Deledio 2, Martin 2, Gordon 2, Griffiths, Cotchin, Foley, S.Edwards.
-
Wow. Who just saw them sing the song?
They look very happy and passionate. Glad to see some spirit.
-
Yeah, as intense a rendition as I've seen.
-
Passion is what I saw. Loved it. Loosing culture can go get studded for a week at least.
-
:pray :clapping
-
LOL Mick Molloy :lol. We all went through those emotions Micky ;D
-
If the Essendon win was good this was even better. :thumbsup
Already hoping Nort beat the Crows in Tassie next week. :pray
Umps ruined the game for us in the first 3 bar the Sloane goal that wasn't to just the guy looking at the goal. ;D
They then systematically raped us on crowd and momentum noise from the Crows only to even up slightly later in the last. Take the four points an run like the wind back home. :thumbsup
-
Good win :gotigers
Everything pushing against us, but we found a way.
Some very brave tigers indeed, inaccuracy kept the crows in amoungst other things(umps)
Must keep this intensity and endeavour up. Need to steamroll saints and beat the swans!
-
Benny Gale down in the rooms is so excited about the win he's even got the head wobbling going .
-
Good win.
Jack is poo.
Hope they dont get cocky and stuff it up.
-
I just hope now our early season losses to Dogs and Dees don't make all this futile for this year and stem momentum for the next season. Have to make it now we are all just too involved and engaged in this now, especially after the last fortnight where results thus far have started to fall our way. Would be a real let down to lose a match now more so than winning all 9 games and missing out because I still don't think many of us can believe that right now we are still in the hunt. :thumbsup
-
Collingwood losing means they're all but gone
North to beat the crows next week and then we're in next week.
Then justice Middleton makes his decision so even if we lose to the swans we're in at essendrugs expense anyway
-
Great win. Excellent win against the odds. The last time I've seen this endeavour and passion was the tail end of '94.
Both then and especially the last few weeks I've seen some fight.
The boys are playing as a team, playing for each other and fighting for one another. It's truly great stuff.
Let's hope this is it boys, the wake up call & the kick up the arse they needed.
Now there's finally better signs then last year.
-
Great place to watch footy is the Adelaide oval ;D
-
Great place to watch footy is the Adelaide oval ;D
Even better when we win.
May have to go there in Week 1 of the finals against Port. ;D
-
I thought the team was terrific this evening. They played their guts out. Well done to all involved but gee they we could have smashed em if we had kicked straight and not scored all those points. Have to try and smash St Kilda next week and get that percentage up.
-
Collingwood losing means they're all but gone
Not all but ... They ARE gone ! They've lost Beams and Reid for the year. Cloke maybe too ? Pendlebury is injured and Swan is on one leg. They're well and truly ****ed !
Anyhow , enough of the poor and unfortunate Collingwood.....GO TIGES !
That was a ballsy win tonite. Rance has to be All Australian doesn't he ? Oh and a shout out to one of my faves. A bloke who cops a bit of criticism but he'd get a game in my team every week if I was picking it. Stevie Morris :thumbsup Played like a wrecking ball , got a bit of it , disposal was good and he thrashed Betts and pre game I thought he was our biggest threat.
-
Was i imagining it or did every adelaide player throw their head back every time they were tackled?
fknuing weak dogs.
So glad we beat them there
-
Was i imagining it or did every adelaide player throw their head back every time they were tackled?
stuffnuing weak dogs.
So glad we beat them there
We were also quite crude in some of our tackling due to our fierceness in the contest. The dogs saw this and were trying to milk it even though in many other cases the free was not there. Gordo in some of his tackles was just too over exhuberant. The one at centre half forward in the last was one I was yelling at the tv some choice top shelf words. ;D
-
These games are shortening my friggen llifespan

How good is it!!!?????

A little bit of history repeating
It had been almost 20 years since the Tigers last won seven games in a row, when they were victorious in each of the opening seven matches of the 1995 season. Coincidentally that seventh win was achieved against Adelaide, in a game where Tony Modra kicked five goals for the Crows and Matthew Knights collected 38 disposals for the Tigers. History repeated itself on Saturday night, with Richmond overcoming the Crows to claim a seventh win on the trot.

The best win of the year for mine. Just the way we moved the footy and our pressure at Adelaide when we didn't have the footy, especially in the first half.
Really great to see us running to create when we got the ball back off them.
Enjoyable to watch and that's not something I have said this year.
Make the finals or not, if we play like this consistently the Tigers have won me back.
Well done Tigers.
-
Give me a port Adelaide supporter any day over a crows fan
They are the most pathetic backward bunch of bogans one would hope to ever see.
Don't care about swearing as in guilty of if amongst mates but fella ripping out the c bomb at will was unbelievable. Sitting next to some old tigers and felt sorry for em.
Was a great win. To grind it out was sensational
All comes down to Sydney

It might be a little far fetched but this stretch of wins just reminds me of the John Northey led wins in 1994.
We also made a poor start to the year, I think we were 3 and 7 or 8 with Mal Brown coming out swinging before we made a super run at the 8.
Many close, hard fought wins including an away win over the Crows.
Back then, the tackling, pressure, team spirit and emerging belief shone through and certainly the spirit and belief are things the 2 teams have in common.
Not sure if I'm clutching at straws here but it just struck me last night when we fought back how similar both teams were - particularly that never say die quality that we have regained in those wins in the past 2 weeks.
-
l see the same culprits doing stupid things when the game is in the balance.
Chris Newman short kicks in the back line & Petterd kicking across the ground in wet weather, l would have dragged his ass to the bench & subbed him out. Newman would be struggling to retain his spot in the side if we made finals & picked our best 22. Conca will be back next week & then after that Vickery. So who will make way for these 2 inclusions or do we make them earn their spots back in the side by playing in the VFL. Newman's head space worries me in the backline. Newman & Petterd cost us goals too often & it needs addressing before the team plays another game.

Keep it going Tiges, one for the true supporters

Thought Chaplin was fantastic in the last qtr.
2 match winning incidents.
We were behind and Podsiadly had a chance to snap on goal a few meters out and Chaplin smothered / knocked the ball out of his hands. Crows had full momentum and if they kicked 2 goals clear that could have broken us.
With a few minutes left he took a diving chest mark in the backline.
He's been a frustrating player to watch at times. But thought he was brilliant last night.

That critical mark late in the match was sensational. He has definitely lifted with the return of Rance.
