Richmond supporters will never get over these 11 losses

TO be a Richmond supporter is to believe that the worst possible outcome is always possible, no matter how good the situation may seem.
It’s to believe a game can be lost when you’re sixteen points up with a little over a minute to play.
Rather than push us away, this pain seems to make Richmond supporters more fanatical.
It’s like we suffer from a weird masochistic personality disorder, deriving some strange pleasure from the suffering it brings.
We’ve become the subject of mirth among our friends who tend to smirk and shake their heads, disbelieving anyone could endure the torment our club has caused us, but still remain loyal.
Here’s 11 matches Tigers fans will never, ever get over.
2013 Elimination Final against Carlton
Carlton weren’t even supposed to be in the finals, having been gifted a spot after Essendon’s ban over the supplements scandal. Richmond should have led by 10 goals at half time, but instead squandered a 26-point lead as a half-fit Chris Judd inspired the Blues to a come-from-behind win.
2012 vs. Gold Coast in Cairns
Karmichael Hunt plays at least two codes of football better than he can play AFL, but he still managed to kick the winner after the siren to win this one for the Suns. Hunt’s kick came at the end of what Paul Roos later described as “the worst 50 seconds of football” played by any team in the history of the game.
2012 vs. Carlton
Brock McLean had never kicked a goal from outside 50 in his life. He wasn’t even having a shot when his long ball into the forward line in the dying seconds of this game fell untouched over the back of the pack and dribbled through for a goal. It handed the Tigers their third loss in a row by less than a goal.
1996 Round 4 versus Sydney
It should have been a goal to Richmond in the dying seconds, but instead the umpire paid a free kick against Matthew Richardson to Andrew Dunkley. The Swans won by a point and went on to play in the Grand Final. The Tigers finished ninth again, missing the finals by half a game.
1993 Round 1 versus Adelaide
Back when teams actually tried in the pre-season competition, the Tigers had fans buzzing after making the final of the National Cup. But reality came in the form of a 94-point Round 1 hiding at the hands of Tony Modra and the Crows.
2007. Round 9 versus Essendon
Desperate for a win after losing the first eight games of the season, the Tigers looked to have finally broken the drought when, with just minutes to play, Matthew Richardson outmarked Mal Michael, played on and kicked a goal from outside 50.
But the umpire paid a free kick against Richo for hands in the back — a rule only introduced at the beginning of the season — plus a 50 metre penalty, and the Bombers held on for the win.
If there’s any small consolation, the loss saw Richmond get pick 2 in the 2008 draft, allowing them to pick up Trent Cotchin.
2009. Round 1 versus Carlton.
It was supposed to be the year of the Tiger. Richo, playing as a wingman, was in career-best form, Nathan Brown looked to have finally recovered from his broken leg, and Ben Cousins had been added to a midfield that already included Cotchin and Deledio.
Surely the Tigers would improve on their ninth-placed finish from 2008. But it all came crashing down in Round 1 with the Blues winning by 83 points and Cousins tearing his hamstring. Coach Terry Wallace was sacked before the year was out with the Tigers winning just five games, finishing 15th.
1991. Round 2 versus Essendon.
Having battled extinction all summer, the Tigers looked on track for an unlikely win against last year’s grand finalists Essendon. But a late Bomber comeback capped by a Mark Thompson goal with six seconds left saw Essendon win by four points.
1990. Round 2 versus North Melbourne
There would be few people alive who have witnessed more Richmond games than Kevin Bartlett.
Bartlett, who was coaching the hapless Tigers at the time, described this 141-point loss to North Melbourne “the worst performance I’ve ever seen by a Richmond Football Club team”.
1992 Round 5 versus West Coast
There are few players in the history of the game more despised by opposition clubs than Karl Langdon.
His two final-quarter goals help the Eagles turn a 20-point three-quarter time deficit into a one-point win at the MCG. Richmond would go on to lose its next game to Hawthorn by 79 points as Jason Dunstall kicked 17 goals. West Coast would go on to win the flag.
1987 Round 1 versus West Coast
West Coast’s first game in the VFL saw it trail by more than five goals at three-quarter time before piling on nine last quarter goals to win by 14 points.
In the 27 years since the Eagles joined the competition West Coast has made the finals 19 times since, winning three premierships. Richmond has made the finals just three times, it’s best finishes two losing preliminary finals in 1995 and 2001.

No idea FMD, the jack dyer Melbourne loss is up there with the greatest limp wristed events I've ever been to.
Been to over 500 games not all of them in memory, but hey waddya do?

What about the last round loss to Melbourne in 1988 with a spot in the 8 up for grabs. Jeff Farmer takes mark of the year the snow season finished early thanks to El Nino and we lose in the white shorts by 76 points. Only highlight was decking that Melbourne fan in front of me whose wife was giving me the poo$.
Richmond v Geelong at the dome in 2007 and a 157 point defeat and getting letters of apologies from Greg Miller during the week.
FTF game in 2011 and losing to Carlton by 103 points.
Centennary game in 2008 kicking 2.7 in the first quarter missing sitters only for Carlton to hang in there and kick 7 goals in the last to ruin our celebrations and win by 30.
Winning the wooden spoon in 1987 losing at home to the Bears on a Friday night in round 22.
Grand Final of 1982. Only time you see a naked woman in your life and you think she fornicated you instead of vice versa.
Tom Hafey match this year. Can't win for a club legend like that then that's unforgivable.
Ditto for the Jack Dyer games against Port at the Dome and Hawthotn in 2003.
Round 2 2002. Thinking we were a chance beating Essendon with them having a few outs and us flogging the Pies in Round 1. 30 minutes in the score was 7.2.44 to 0.3.3 and hindsight showed Danny Frawley was dead man walking after that.
Losing to Fitzroy by 1 point in 1981 after we kicked 8 goals to 0 goals in the first quarter. We miss the 5 by a game and Fitzroy were stiff to lose to Collingwood by 1 point in the first semi final.
Same opposition kick 6 goals to 0 goals in last quarter in 1984 to lose by 17 to get them on a late season run to get them into the 5. We lose our next 4 include a 115 point debacle at Princes Park to Carlton after that and miss by a game or so.
Round 5 1987. 10 goals up to Sydney in the 3rd quarter lose by 20. Infamous image of Tony Jewell pulling his hair out at the old MCG coaches box.
1991 lose to Fitzroy by 59 points who won four games for the year which sealed KB's coaching fate.
Losing to Dogs by 115 points round 1 2006. Dogs rub it in and say we weren't trying after a 16 goal to 2 second half.
Gold Coast Cairns 2011 6.8 44 to 1.1.7 at quarter time. Kick 3 more goals for the day and the Suns beat us by 15.
How about the loss to Port in Darwin earlier that year. Would have put us in the 8 after winning four of our last 5 prior to that.
Carlton round 21 last year. 8 goals to 3 after that. McLean kicks 3 in the second Casboult kicks a freak in the last and we fall by 10 costing us a double chance.
Losing a tight one to Sydney at the Dome in 2000 by a point in a game we never hit the front whilst the night before Essendon lose their only game of the year to the Dogs and Hawthorn beat Adelaide to leave us with the monumental tsk of beating Carlton in round 22 by 5 goals to make the 8. For the record we lost to Carlton by 73 points.

Warm sunny late August day 3 goals apiece half way through the first. 8 goals to 3 down at quarter time, 13 goals to 3 down at half time and ultimately lose by 113 leaving us with a must win game against Geelong the following week at the same venue. Gary Ablett misses with injury leaving us with hope but Billy Brownless fills the void and kicks 8 out of a total of 27 9 171 for the Cats who looked like they couldn't miss that day. To add insult to injury Melbourne kick 27 5 the next day against Sydney who won their third successive spoon but had beaten Melbourne in their previous two encounters.
Who said Richmond fans are happy go lucky. These are some off the top my head. Get me a slab lads and a couch and I'll regale a tale of torture from this true tiger. :-\

I remember this game well because it was the first time I ever left a game early.

I was inconsolable the whole summer.
After 30 odd years I think I was finally got over it until last years debacle brought the nightmare rushing back.
It's a wonder were not all mad, maybe we are. It just goes to show how stupidly loyal we all are.

Haha ! I was a 14 year old kid and was 5 foot nothing.Had standing room tix. I got there at 7am and waited for the gates to open then stood on the wing. I did not move for the whole day coz I wouldn't have been able to get my spot back. Watched the U/19s then the magoos and then the seniors. I've never needed the toilet more in my life than after that game

Yeh and the week before we played Collingwood out at Waverley and were up by 50 points at the 25 minute mark of the 3rd. Brian Taylor went nuts in the last and Collingwood got up. Long drive home that day.
Another one you didn't mention was 1998 ( I think ) when O'Loughlin kicked a goal at the death at Etihad to relegate us to ninth again

Dice I was 12 years old an a Pies relative took me to that game at Waverley. Shocking day.
Centennary game was 2008 with the HFC type guernsey, FTF game was 2011.
My hatred for the Carlton footy club started thad awful day in 1982 and has not waned one iota ever since. When you're 7 they are unforgettable and unforgivable. Never does a footy game go by where I don't wish failure on that organisation of misappropriation.
The Sydney game where Mickey O kicked that goal was 2000. Chaffey replied kicking one that kept on bouncing and bouncing and eluded Troy Luff and went through and to make it worse Matty Rogers marked 40 out dead in front to give us the lead 2 points down and shinned the set shot and it got rushed through leaving us one point down and thus at the final score.
PS Etihad was not finished and in use until 2000.
Nonetheless great stories Dice only a true tiger can smile at and laugh at oneself and their misfortune. :thumbsup
Lamington that game in 03 against Nought and the year before the Mick Martyn game where his dad was gravely ill and Mick was allowed to wear the number his now late father wore in his playing days. It seemed the era under Laidley Nought always had some tribute or milestone or something against us. :thumbsup

That 113 point game in 1994 went out with my sister and friends to the Prince of Wales to see the Cosmic Psychos. My depression quickly dissipated given i was doing my Carlton supporter sister a favour and going as she had a full purse and the drinks flowed nicely and regularly until the Cosmic Psychos came on abnd the lead singer before they started said I was a Richmond supporter until 2pm today. Reality hit and my blood ran cold for a moment ........
Until my mate was approaching with two wild turkey and cokes to further wet my whistle. :thumbsup

Was a great night that night. Lots of laughs and a souv for sustenance for the walk back to our friends house near Williams Rd Prahran to pick up the car. :thumbsup
